Players will be able to continue to purchase games on PS3 and PS Vita.
Recently, we notified players that PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita devices was planned to end this summer.
Upon further reflection, however, it’s clear that we made the wrong decision here. So today I’m happy to say that we will be keeping the PlayStation Store operational for PS3 and PS Vita devices. PSP commerce functionality will retire on July 2, 2021 as planned.
When we initially came to the decision to end purchasing support for PS3 and PS Vita, it was born out of a number of factors, including commerce support challenges for older devices and the ability for us to focus more of our resources on newer devices where a majority of our gamers are playing on. We see now that many of you are incredibly passionate about being able to continue purchasing classic games on PS3 and PS Vita for the foreseeable future, so I’m glad we were able to find a solution to continue operations.
I’m glad that we can keep this piece of our history alive for gamers to enjoy, while we continue to create cutting-edge new game worlds for PS4, PS5, and the next generation of VR.
Thank you for sharing your feedback with us – we’re always listening and appreciate the support from our PlayStation community.
Happy this is happening, it’s important to keep this mediums history alive.
Three things tho,
1. When it comes to the PSP store closing, does this mean PSP games will no longer me purchasable though the PS3 store?
2. Does this also mean that the web store for buying PS1/3/P/Vita games is going back online?
3. This is more a request, I understand closing the store as it takes man power to run it but closing for good means the licensees for you to sell these games will be terminated. If you ever want to open a legacy store again or decide to (hopefully) add downloadable BC support it’s going to be a nightmare contacting developers and publishers to re-submit their games. I also feel as a PS3 user that the interface is getting really bad to use with age, to save recourses couldn’t you just add all these old games and make 1 huge PlayStation Store? While you can’t play these games on current gen, it would mean it’s easier for customers to shop and download on their legacy systems when they turn them on.
Finally, I would add that if you dedicated a small team to emulation on PS5 I think the results from users would be better then you think. Both financially and with good will. You already have the licence to sell the games, it’s just building out the software. I have a massive desire to re-buy all my old games digitally and no way to do this without booting up 16 year old tech. I would happily buy most PS Studios games from the PS3 era and I know many others would.
If their was some clarity on the first 2 questions that would be fantastic.
Yet you don’t apologize for saying “Cities can rebuild” in response to the riots last year.
I’ll never buy another Sony product.
Jim Ryan isn’t Sony. Take it up with the person who works on the social media accounts.
