Introducing the next generation of VR on PlayStation

First details on the next-generation VR system coming to the PS5 console.

More than four years ago, we launched PlayStation VR to offer a transformative new way to play games on PS4, providing a much stronger sense of presence and deeper immersion to players compared with traditional games. In that time, we’ve seen tremendous experiences that have propelled virtual reality gaming forward, including highly acclaimed titles like Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, Tetris Effect, Blood & Truth, Moss, Beat Saber, and Resident Evil 7 biohazard. We’ve also enhanced the experience for some PS VR titles when played on PS4 Pro and PlayStation 5.

Today I’m pleased to share that our next-generation VR system will be coming to PlayStation 5, enabling the ultimate entertainment experience with dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity. Players will feel an even greater sense of presence and become even more immersed in their game worlds once they put on the new headset.

We’re continuing to innovate with our new VR system so that our fans can continue to enjoy the unique experiences that are synonymous with PlayStation. We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input. It will connect to PS5 with a single cord to simplify setup and improve ease-of-use, while enabling a high-fidelity visual experience.

One of the innovations we’re excited about is our new VR controller, which will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics. That’s just one of the examples of future-proof technology we’re developing to match our vision for a whole new generation of VR games and experiences.

There’s still a lot of development underway for our new VR system, so it won’t be launching in 2021. But we wanted to provide this early update to our fans, as the development community has started to work on creating new worlds for you to explore in virtual reality.

We also want to thank all of our PS VR players for your continued support — with upcoming games like After The Fall, Sniper Elite VR, and Humanity, there’s much more to come for PS VR whether you’re playing on PS4 or PS5. With both PlayStation VR and the next-generation VR system we’re building, our commitment to virtual reality as a medium for games is stronger than ever. We look forward to sharing more details in the future!

  • Will the new vr be compatible with ps4?

  • I want FORTNITE to run on PSVR. I want Battlefield to run on PSVR. If major games are not running on PSVR, it is worth nothing.

    • Fortnite will not be a VR game, if it was it’d be OP because you could see behind you. Battlefield will not be a VR game. Are you just wanting a 2D experience on a system designed, developed, built, and released for 3D experiences? I heard that your TV or monitor does great for 2D.

  • This better not have a drift problem or any problem like that. And it better fit well, have an actually good tracking system that goes out of calibration every time you move.

  • LOOKS GORGEOUS !!! i never liked psvr and any other vr system but this one is really taking my attention, i hope the system is smaller and why not wireless, the thing of having a cable makes me feel i can drop something, so lets see how this looks and works…

and sony… common… please… bring another handheld console!! a really powerful one, there is so many options to build a powerful handheld console i dont care the price just build one and i will buy it !!!!

  • Sounds amazing for us Playstation aficionados!!!

  • THANK YOU SONY! I am excited for what you have in store for us with PSVR 2. So please I mean this whole heartedly when I tell you to…… “Please take my freaking money!!!”

  • Will consumers of the current Playstation VR have any discount or compensation for an upgrade? As a PS5 user and VR consumer I am unsure if my wallet can handle all of this innovation?

  • would maybe be much better if the New VR glasses would not have the for of glasses but something what is n´known as ” Visier” english visor, that you can open and close by a joint. THE BIG CONSTRUCTION USED in the 1. gen is uncomfortable and ALL OF IT Nhas to be taken down each time when you need some adjustment find A SEAT OR INSERT A NEW DISC: I cant post a picturehere but its similar to these plastic visors in use as anti corona protection, with some type of flexible plastellin random applied to the face everyone could apply it to the form of his face and so close it densely while it is much easier to be opened. also a visir woulD allow a much better sight field. thanks and keep on your good work INNOVATIONS AN SURSPRISES Helmut munich

    • a VR headset COULD ALSO BE A HELMET WITH MANY LITTLE SPEAKERS around the head those can perform Dolby Atmos, the screen could be a shield as you have on motorcycle helmets, easy to open an close and someway as bended perfect for 3 D features

  • Will the upcoming PSVR be backwards compatible with current PSVR games or does the new PSVR incorporate a different approach as far as engineering I know back when the ps3 dropped backwards compatibility that was a big deal because lots of people lost access to natively play ps1 and ps2 games the same thing was seen from ps3 to the ps4 now the ps5 going forwards will support native backwards compatibility so will the PSVR take the same approach as the new PS5 in terms of backwards compatibility with the current PSVR library of games?

  • That’s my question the only reason I came back to PlayStation was because of PlayStations recent commitment to native backwards compatibility of ps4 games on ps5 and hopefully forward I loved the fact that I could pop in an Xbox, Xbox 360, or even an Xbox One game in the Xbox Series X and have access to all Xbox Generations of Games. Me personally I owned the PS, PS one, PS2, PS3, PSP-1/2/3000, PS Vita but the library of games are segmented into digital and cloud based games make a long story short I’m coming back to PlayStation to test it out I would like to see the ability to download digital copies of ps1,ps2, and ps3 games on future consoles because not every one has internet so you don’t have access to over a couple thousand games within the PlayStation library now because it’s dependent on constant connectivity.
