Introducing the next generation of VR on PlayStation

First details on the next-generation VR system coming to the PS5 console.

More than four years ago, we launched PlayStation VR to offer a transformative new way to play games on PS4, providing a much stronger sense of presence and deeper immersion to players compared with traditional games. In that time, we’ve seen tremendous experiences that have propelled virtual reality gaming forward, including highly acclaimed titles like Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, Tetris Effect, Blood & Truth, Moss, Beat Saber, and Resident Evil 7 biohazard. We’ve also enhanced the experience for some PS VR titles when played on PS4 Pro and PlayStation 5.

Today I’m pleased to share that our next-generation VR system will be coming to PlayStation 5, enabling the ultimate entertainment experience with dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity. Players will feel an even greater sense of presence and become even more immersed in their game worlds once they put on the new headset.

We’re continuing to innovate with our new VR system so that our fans can continue to enjoy the unique experiences that are synonymous with PlayStation. We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input. It will connect to PS5 with a single cord to simplify setup and improve ease-of-use, while enabling a high-fidelity visual experience.

One of the innovations we’re excited about is our new VR controller, which will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics. That’s just one of the examples of future-proof technology we’re developing to match our vision for a whole new generation of VR games and experiences.

There’s still a lot of development underway for our new VR system, so it won’t be launching in 2021. But we wanted to provide this early update to our fans, as the development community has started to work on creating new worlds for you to explore in virtual reality.

We also want to thank all of our PS VR players for your continued support — with upcoming games like After The Fall, Sniper Elite VR, and Humanity, there’s much more to come for PS VR whether you’re playing on PS4 or PS5. With both PlayStation VR and the next-generation VR system we’re building, our commitment to virtual reality as a medium for games is stronger than ever. We look forward to sharing more details in the future!

  • Awesome. Can’t wait for Sony to do nothing about bots/scalpers and make it impossible to get for 6 months following its release.

  • Can’t wait!

  • you what would be nice if sony would let someone make another sly cooper!, but we can only hope. #loveslyforlife.

  • Are there plans to make the headset wireless?

  • Could it and would it be compatible with playstation 4?

    • That would be very smart! And also make the PSVR2 Backwards Compatible with our old PSVR1 one library with the benefits of updated support for Roomscale Tracking and New Move Controllers with Joysticks for proper Smooth Locomotion and Smooth Turning the way its meant to be!

  • YEAH! I’ll be playing Star Wars Squadrons VR forever!!! @Motive better patch that sucker!

  • PlayStation make a game like Kinect Sports but for PlayStation, so you can exercise and get moving during quarantine and in a fun way. So like different games that will make you move. Call it PS Sports.

  • Please make the VR headset WIRELESS!

  • The New PSVR Headset really needs major drastic improvements from the currently flawed and broken PSVR headset. The PSVR1 has absolutely horrendous tracking system with horrible aim drift in every single new AAA PSVR Game that absolutely kills the experience! The Current Tracking system runs on a single front facing camera that forces you to stand in one spot like an idiot, otherwise the tracking system will start drifting if you decide to Physically move left or right, no matter how you set up the camera! All the other VR headsets used roomscale tracking systems with 2 tracking lighthouses you can plug into power outlets from 2 sides of the room without plugging it into the PC, yet sony chose a broken camera tracking system. The Playstation Move Controllers from the PS3 era need to go! We should of got proper PSVR hand motion controllers with Joysticks day one of the PSVR1’s release! How can you release all these VR games with Full Smooth Locomotion and Smooth Turning and not have Joysticks on the move Controllers?!? That is absolutely mental! And what really makes me angry is people on forums and comment section justify these decisions by saying “well its Sonys decision, we should respect their decision because its their product”, NO!. Enough is Enough! Sony screwed up the PSVR1 big time and they need to make things right and admit to their mistakes. I am willing to give them another chance on a few important conditions for the PSVR2.

-The Tracking System needs to be Vastly improved to match up with the roomscale tracking capabilities of the HTC Vive, this controller drift needs to stop!!

-The New Move Controllers Obviously need Joysticks for proper smooth locomotion and smooth turning, as well as the announced haptic feedback and rumoured Finger Tracking are obviously welcome as well.

-Our Current PSVR1 Library needs to be Backwards Compatible with with the PSVR2 and be accommodated with the New Roomscale Tracking System And New Move Controllers with Joysticks. Because our current PSVR1 library desperately needs this because alot of PSVR Games that require complex fast paced Locomotion are just unplayable with the PSVR1’s broken Tracking System (Teleporting and Snap Turning should never be forced but always as a Comfort Option). The PSVR2 needs to also obviously make our old PSVR 1 games run better on the PSVR2 with better Resolution, Framerates/Refresh Rates and overall Better Perfomance, i know this can all be done! Please fix your mistakes this time Sony! This was all Constructive Criticism by the way.

    • -Inside Out Roomscale Tracking would obviously be the right way forward.

-Making the PSVR2 simultaneously both wired and Wireless would be the right way forward as well. You could be playing wirelessly and if your PSVR2 is running out of charge you can just plus it back in and charge as you play. They would have the to find a way to make the PSVR2’s Wireless Mode Capability have low latency.

    • The room tracking from the headset rather than relying on the ps camera is the only way I’ll buy it…if it still relies on the blue lights and the ps camera I’ll just stick with my quest

  • Can be any year in 2022 or 2023 but it will be existing for that gamers were going on the future of Playstation world 🌎 🎮🕹

  • I love the ps vr. I am kind of dissapointed on the lack of great games. There are some diamonds there but when you come across tech like this the sky is the limit. Its nice that we are getting an upgraded headset but the games are where its at. What of we got a Mass Effect on vr or God of war? A list games. I was scared this was going to turn out like the PSP, and the Vita, which in my opinion were fantastic handhelds. It, for me was the lack of good games. I want to be blown away by the entire experience! Dont get me wrong. I was awestruck by my vr headset but only have maybe 10 good games. I believe this is gamings future! Well that and eventually holligram technology. Lets see where this goes.

  • Who cares if we can’t even get a PS5.

    • The PS5 will 100% be easier to get and more available when it releases. That is a valid analysis for right now, but not for the future.

  • Will Sony release any Special Edition PS5’S or Special Edition PS5 Pro’s like the Star Wars PS4 Pro Edition’s?? I’m really hoping for one of those..

  • it will be compatible with the games of the first vr?

    • Judging by the controllers they announced, no. Not all buttons are present to my knowledge, so some games might not work.

  • New resolution, new controller (with adaptive triggers, I guess? That would be awesome!) – these are all great and of course expected from the next-gen version of PS VR. But I really hope that engineers address one of the issues of the current VR which doesn’t let me play more than like 20 minutes without becoming kinda cross-eyed and really disoriented for the next day… Or even a whole week… My feeling of determining distance to objects just gets really weird. I’m talking about the interpupilary distance. PLEASE MAKE IPD TWEAKING HARDWARE!!!! The software solution doesn’t solve the issue at all – maybe it works if your IPD isn’t too far from the default value of the headset, but if your eyes are too wide apart, or too close to each other (and I’m not saying special medical cases, far before that) – no PSVR for you. Which is very unfortunate. So, movable lenses! Please! Most other VR sets on the market have them. Why not add them to the next PSVR?

    • Yes, they will have adaptive triggers. And yes I do expect better resolution and hopefully it will be easier on your eyes.

  • Was really hoping for cordless

    • I’m sure it will still be a very fun experience even if it is wired. Wireless VR headsets are still kinda new technology, and might not have the same GPU as a wired headset could.

  • I have loved PSVR from the start! It is so easy to introduce someone to PlayStation using VR that would normally typically never use a PS Console.

I travel to parties with my VR. I have had everyone from a typical young gamer to a Retired Colonel and Grandfather put the PSVR headset on and enjoy the Best Place to Play, PlayStation! Everyone walked away with a positive experience either because they loved watching their family and friends or because they were part of the Play.

Thank you for sharing this news. It is extremely exciting!

  • PLease release Half-Life: Alyx on the PSVR 2 and watch PSV2 print money.

    V/R
    A starved HAlf-Life stan

  • Wireless would be nicer. Much can be learnt from Occulus.

    • Annnnnnnd just read it has a cord. Appreciate the step, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say I’m bummed to be tethered. Unless you make this a 20 foot-plus long cord, you’re gonna irritate a lot of gamers who will be constricted by a short cord that is otherwise incompatible with their game room set-up.

  • Strange to have an introduction to something without actually introducing it, but sure. Whatever floats your boat.

As long as it is wireless and supports my existing PSVR library I’m down.

    • No it is not wireless, and I do not believe it will be compatible with all PSVR 1 games. To my knowledge, the controllers do not have all the buttons the PS Move controllers do. But it seems like some games could.

  • A single USBC or should be able to carry all the data and graphics.

  • I knew SIE was making another VR, I may buy it! also cant wait for full dive in future if you watch Sword Art Online!!!

  • In the meantime, please ask developers of current titles like RE7, WD:SS, Wipeout and Gran Tourismo Sport to bring PS5 updates for the PSVR1. There is much potential in the current PSVR, if devs make use of the PS5 rendering power. I would love to play GTS in VR with a full grid of cars, instead of just one oponent driver. And RE7 probably would look better with higher supersampling as well. Thanks

    • I wouldn’t be all for the PSVR 1. It is flawed in many ways such as its crappy tracking, and drift issues.

  • Thanks for update I am enjoying om ps5, but cab we get a update to at least use our ps5 controllers… plz…

  • Great ! The announcement I have been waiting for for years ! So excited ! The vr is a revolution !

  • Will the new VR equipment be wireless??

  • Hey Sony. Here’s a novel idea. Find a way to prevent Scalpers and others from buying several PS5s. That will give those of us who have none to have an easier time getting one. But you have nothing in place to stop people from buying more than one. Also, how fair is it that those who do have them get all this cool stuff. But those of us who don’t have one, but want these cool things, won’t get them?

  • Okay, okay but how about they fix the ps5 controller mic why is only chat audio comping out of my controller speaker instead of my Tv…. and why can’t I just use my ps4 camera mic too….. this is still negatively affecting experience with this console

  • Adaptive inverse hoop finger resistance via wrist controllers connected to ps5 via wifi 6, 1200mAH per controller.

All new ultra-thin titanium dioxide metalens allowing for thin profile display and long duration play.

One cable allowing for pc connection for future playstation exclusives on pc and ease of development with game engines such as Unreal Engine5.

Partnership with Epic Games with UE5 on the development side of psvr2 to utilize fast streaming assets from SSD within 10° of FOV allowing for lossless detail while using NANITE geometry. Also allowing for games not originally intended for VR to be easily converted as VR capable.

    Wish list?

  • Sadly the only thing that would sell me on psvr 2 would be self tracking…no more sensors using lights, no more Playstation camera tracking the headset…just have cameras on the headset that track its self so when turning around the vr won’t disconnect and say cannot track. Even though there are games I would love to play on Playstation vr that are currently out, the current way of tracking is so bad compared to the quest that I gave my psvr away.

  • Just a thought but it’d be awesome and immersive if we could bind a controller to a weapon and store it on ourselves the AIM being a primary (rifle) and the regular controller being a handgun

  • Please add VR Chat to the new VR for ps5, it would definitely be awesome to have that

    • I think what would be better is if they brought back the old “playstation home” social space from the PS3 generation in VR! that stuff was awesome!

  • I hope they do away with the cable or that the cable actually is just for charging. The added time will allow them to make this happen hopefully.

  • Can’t wait for the new headset. Please be HDR OLED 2k+ 120Hz 120FOV display with inside out tracking, with displayport over USB C connection + better than ‘knuckles’ controllers and I’ll be happy to upgrade to PS5(pro) once the headset is out!

  • Although I hate they’re saying this now, [cause I recently bought a PSVR] I am still exited.

  • I am very excited to see what you guys come up with for the design and features of the new VR headset! I am kind of hoping you will pair the new VR headset with SAO haha just because it would be very fitting for the year and time of release. I am sure many fans would jump on the opportunity to snag it when it comes out for that reason. I also hope this new VR headset really pushes some triple A gaming companies to make some amazing games for VR. All I want to say is that I am excited for all the new tech coming out in these coming years, because we are going to see some crazy advances!

  • Also Sony, people have money. If you build something premium people will find a way to pay. Please don’t skimp on the technology, mayke it expensive, make it the best you can. Look at everyone considering paying more for the ps5, I would have liked the ps5 to cost 700, with the best tech you can provide. If a pro was released tomorrow for 900, and it was incredible… I think people would find a way.

  • Iron man VR

  • Please external hard drive

  • Seems like they might be waiting for newer tech to implement in the new vr

  • 2022

  • DeoVR developer here. Trying to get our player on PSVR, but there is no communication from PS Store for our application. We believe we can level up video playback in PSVR

  • Lots of cool things coming our way!!!! Thanks Sony!!!!

  • I would very much like a wireless option. HTC Vive had a wireless adapter for theirs, so I am hoping Sony might implement something similar. It’s really nice to be able to VR wirelessly, not having to worry about tripping over cables, or building some ridiculous overhead rig just to keep cables out of the way….

  • i hope the controllers have a joystick

  • This came at a great time. I really like how they explained everything too which set expectations reasonably which they have been doing a pretty darn good job of lately imho.

  • Hello everyone

  • Looking at the trend of vr today, if this headset has even one cable that needs to be attached, it will flop. A wireless headset is a must if you want the hardware to have a lasting life.
