Read on to see all of 2020’s big winners, then hit the comments to let us know how you voted.

See you in 2021!

Best Narrative

The Last of Us Part II

The Last of Us is considered one of the best video game tales ever created, so the storytellers at Naughty Dog had a tough act to follow. That’s what makes this ambitious, nuanced, and subversive sequel even more impressive. From old obsessions that possess Ellie, to newcomer Abby working through her own issues, The Last of Us Part II is compelling from beginning to end. Credit also goes to the masters of storytelling at Sucker Punch, Insomniac, and Square Enix.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Best Use of DualSense

Astro’s Playroom

From the scraping sensation of skating across ice, to detecting subtle pit-pats of rain on an umbrella, to feeling the resistance of a coiled spring, Astro’s Playroom put the DualSense wireless controller to work. Voters noticed in a big way, earning the game a Platinum trophy. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, and Demon’s Souls round out the winners with Gold, Silver and Bronze trophies respectively.

Best Accessibility Features

The Last of Us Part II

Accessibility in games has always been important, but teams like Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Insomniac, and Ubisoft built in new features this year that ensure their games can be played by as many gamers as possible. Congrats not only to these winners, but also to everyone who is able to enjoy these titles as a result of the teams’ efforts here.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Best Graphical Showcase

The Last of Us Part II

Naughty Dog is renowned for creating games with a mesmerizing level of detail, and The Last of Us Part II is the team’s most technically impressive feat yet. Swivel the camera around while Ellie grapples with an enemy, and you’ll see her grimacing with effort. Position Abby next to a steep ledge and experience her wobbly tunnel vision as acrophobia settles in. 2020 was a great year for stunning games, including interpretations of ancient Japan, Marvel’s New York City, and the dark fantasy world of Boletaria.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Demon’s Souls

Best Art Direction

Ghost of Tsushima

Sucker Punch’s lavish attention to detail meant its open world samurai epic never missed a chance to impress. From that title drop sequence to the twisted reimagining of its world with the Legends multiplayer mode, Ghost of Tsushima demanded frequent use of its Photo Mode. It, as well as the other winners in this category, was a perfect excuse to familiarise yourself with the PS4 Share and PS5 Create buttons.

Best Soundtrack

The Last of Us Part II

The Last of Us Part II snags yet another Platinum Trophy in our GOTY Awards. Yet all four winners here highlighted the diversity of this year’s soundtracks, perfectly capturing the soundscape of historical adventures, modern day heroics, near-future horrors and fantastical cities. Whether propelling the on-screen action or being enjoyed in isolation, these scores were worth putting on repeat.

Best Sound Design

The Last of Us Part II

Naughty Dog’s achievements with the audio of its acclaimed sequel isn’t limited to that captivating soundtrack. The intricate work of the game’s sound design – perhaps showcased best by the staggering complexity of its breathing system – added essential details to make this world feel fully realised. A ragged breath; the cocking of a rifle; metal grinding, the howl of an Infected. All immersed us that much more in The Last of Us Part II.

Ghost of Tsushima

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

Demon’s Souls

Best Multiplayer

Call of Duty: Warzone

Activision’s legendary, buttery smooth FPS gameplay merges with the popular battle royale genre in this free-to-play juggernaut. Content updates have kept the experience fresh, from new game modes to holiday-themed events including Jigsaw and Leatherface cameos around Halloween. Shout outs to the stumblin’ fun of Fall Guys, focused intensity of Black Ops Cold War, and four-player co-op in Ghost of Tsushima’s Legends mode.

Best Sports Game

Tony Hawk’s Pro-Skater 1 & 2

Activision’s sick combo of publishing incredible remakes continues, and THPS 1 + 2 is the latest trick in that chain. Developer Vicarious Visions has refreshed the skaters and locations we know and love, while retaining the precise-yet-accessible control scheme that made the series famous. While the Birdman kickflipped over other sports game competition, respect is due to EA, 2K, and Codemasters for their excellent releases.

Best New Character

Miles Morales as Spider-Man (Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales)

While 2020 saw the introduction of an impressive roster of charismatic new characters to gaming, Miles Morales swung to the top of this particular poll, no doubt influenced by Insomniac’s heartfelt, original story centered on Miles becoming his own Spider-Man. Jin, Abby, and Eivor took home the Gold, Silver, and Bronze Trophies, respectively.

Eivor (Assassin’s Creed Valhalla)

Best Independent Game

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout

Uproarious, everyone-for-themselves moments made Fall Guys a genuine phenomenon earlier this year, so it’s no surprise to see these bouncy be-chickened beans at the top of the list. Fellow PlayStation Plus titles Bugsnax and Worms Rumble round out the Gold and Silver winners, while Skater XL’s unique approach to trick controls earned it a Bronze trophy.

Gaming Moment of the Year

The Last of Us Part II: Final Showdown

Steadily roiling conflict builds to a dramatic crescendo in Naughty Dog’s bold, stunning sequel. No spoilers here, but the emotional turmoil and memories that the leading characters bring to this climactic showdown is so white hot that it demands full attention. Other best moment kudos go to galloping through the fields as Jin and feeling the immersive magic of the DualSense controller.

Ghost of Tsushima: Horseback title sequence

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales: The bridge sequence

Astro’s Playroom: Experiencing haptics and adaptive triggers for the first time

Best PS VR Experience

Star Wars Squadrons

The allure of (virtually) climbing inside iconic Starfighters made Star Wars: Squadrons an irresistible PS VR experience. Turns out, screaming past asteroids and evading 360 degree enemy fire while packed into the confines of a cockpit really sticks with people! Gold, Silver, and Bronze Trophies went to Marvel’s Iron Man VR, Dreams, and The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners.

PS4 Game of the Year

The Last of Us Part II

In a strong year for PlayStation exclusives, PS4 Game of the Year was hotly contested. But in the end Naughty Dog’s emotionally-charged sequel clinched the Platinum. Sucker Punch’s open world samurai epic Ghost of Tsushima took Gold, Final Fantasy VII Remake Silver and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Bronze.

PS5 Game of the Year

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales made a name for itself in this year’s GOTY polls, taking home more reader-voted awards than you can shoot a web at. It even bested fellow PS5 launch titles Demon’s Souls, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and Astro’s Playroom to secure the coveted Platinum Trophy for PS5 Game of the Year — congratulations, Insomniac!

New God of War title

The mere confirmation of a new God of War was enough to get PlayStation Blog voters (and staff!) hyped and eagerly awaiting new information. The powerful lineup of Horizon Forbidden West, Resident Evil Village and Final Fantasy XVI proves the future looks bright indeed.

Studio of the Year

Naughty Dog

Following up one of PlayStation’s most acclaimed games was no mean feat, yet Naughty Dog carried it off with aplomb. Every inch of The Last of Us Part II – story beats, set pieces, character animation and so much more – spoke of a development studio at the top of its game. You clearly agreed. Strong acclaim as well for the fantastic work of Insomniac Games, Sucker Punch and Square Enix, who earned Gold, Silver and Bronze Trophies respectively.

  • Yoo did my boys Geoff and Niel Drunkman collaborate again for the playstation awards? 🤣😂

  • I think Destiny 2 should’ve gotten best soundtrack

  • Ghost was a good game… I got a platinum on it. Last of us was hands down game of the year. Look past your own nose and see that. Great job both squads. Honestly spent hours in both worlds and loved every moment. I cant wait to see what suckerpunch and naughty dog have next

  • So a company that had a bad standing for poor employee conditions gets studio of the year 🙄 Sucker punch and Insomniac deserve that platinum. This whole thing is rigged to try and sell Last of Us 2 for xmas…

  • Ghost of tsushima is my game of the Year!

Monster Hunter World Ice Bourne is the game of the decade!

Yakuza like a dragon definitely finished off the year with a Bang loving this game

  • Everyone I know was disappointed with The Last of Us 2 even the internet. Ghost of tsushima deserves game of the Year.

  • No development company that puts their employees through crunch deserves developer of the year. Idc what the crowd vote is.

  • I played GoT and TLOU2 and my god TLOU2 is the most boring annoying back and forth present to past crap I’ve ever played. Ghost was just incredible all around. This is a totally flawed award list. Garbage.

  • I think Spiderman miles moarals better than gohst of tusihmia

  • Yes, The Last of Us II definitely that award. One of the overall best games I’ve played in my gaming life, everything in the game is..words I can’t even describe.

Personally, I can’t disagree with this list, I’ve played almost all of these games mentioned and they all definitely deserved a spot here.

  • So many druckdrones in the comments.

  • Last of US 2 Best Narrative
    LOL

  • So the game that draw most of the haters won basically every category? Maybe Sony should had look at this before removing C2077 from the store?

  • I can proudly say that I have not bought ANY of the games on these awards lists :)

Guess it is just me but I was not impressed with really anything that came out. Ghost of Tsushima was probably the one I was most looking forward too but just didn’t get me that excited to pick it up. Oh well maybe newer games will excite me like Cyberpunk 2077….oh wait…….hmmmm well Lego Skywalker saga is coming out soon!! and the new Ratchet and Clank but only on the PS5 that bots bought to resell because Sony still doesn’t get how to do a launch correctly….sigh. 2020 ends with a wimper.

  • The fact that this game won more than FF7R and GOT is seriously telling, especially when FF7R should’ve won best soundtrack .You guys are seriously sleeping on FF7R and it shows.2020 has been such a crap year I’m just ready to forget the trash of us and 2020 and hopefully move on to a better year

  • Feels like final fantasy deserves more credit.

  • Genuinely surprised TLOU2 didn’t win Best VR Experience, Best Indie game and Most Anticipated of 2021 as well.

Not surprised, just depressed at the fanwankery of these awards, and how creatively and morally bankrupt people continue to fail upwards.

There were other, better games out this that the blog just flat out refuses to recognise for some bizarre reason. Oh wait, it’s entirely because of politics, not because the game was good. That’s why.

  • I picked Ghost of Tsushima and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Either one could of took GOTY home an i would be happy.. LOU2 was a one an done play threw that was OK. I haven’t even wasted the little time or Bigger money on the short stack game of SM:MM. So stand by my Vote.. GOTY came out Like 2019s weak GOTY but a little better..

  • TLOU2 the final showdown is really powerful. That was the first time we are given control of the first protagonist. While I really want to kill the 2nd character after the first 2-3 hour, I really did not want to by the final showdown. My heart was in my mouth the whole sequence. It is brutal, with an emotional flashback in the middle. I like it. Maybe for some, they would like to take revenge. It would be great if Naught Dog offers us the choice. TLOU2 is the well deserved GOTY.

  • These comments are sure fun to read

  • It’s been a hard year…but luckily, I had plenty of amazing games to help me weather the storm. Some were even on PlayStation. ;)

Seriously, though–my old PS4 Pro has been the core provider of much-needed distraction when I needed it most. My sincerest thanks to all of the people behind these virtual worlds (and the large number whom we have failed to mention here.) I can’t wait to see where we go from here. See you in 2021.

  • I’m surprised TLOU2 didn’t win best multiplayer, with all the money they gave to win…

    • best soundtrack and best audio design and narrative LMFAO I’m laughing so hard right now. and best moment? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA oh god this is hilarious . shiould have won best racing too since they have a horse in there

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

  • You guys really need to add a feedback forum because I can’t get anything from you guys.

    1. You need to rethink your refund policy and make it like that of Steam or EA’s Origin with a 2 or 24 hour no questions asked refund. We deserve, as players, to be protected from shoddy software, especially ones that lied in their marketing. Unless your goal is to allow liars and just make as much money off your fanbase as possible, please, ignore this heavily popular feature requested by millions of gamers.

    2. Why can we not restore game saves backed up from a USB drive? This is baffling. I had to do a system reset on PS5 because your hardware engineers didn’t test it before release and caused machine crashes and data loss, so I was forced to restart. I can’t can’t backup or restore my sister’s game saves. This is extremely anti customer.

    3. Deleted game files on PS5 remain on the screen, and some even glitch out behind the Playstation Store. Not intentional, I assume? There are bugs galore with your new system. Where do we submit them?

    4. Make an official game page or forum for bug reports and feedback that someone from Sony will actually read and comment on.

    5. Why can’t we delete Other Storage? I’ve deleted games from the system and there’s still 125gbs on the damn thing. Why is this a thing? Why are almost 300GB going to “system storage” crap and not actual games we want to use?

    6. Rebuilding database when the system ui gets glitchy deletes games but says they’re installed when you go to the game page, forcing you to have to system reset the whole system to fix it. Again, why is there no way to report this?!?!

    7. There is a bug with Demons Souls where you cannot delete individual game saves, at all. So if you make a character, it’s stuck on your system forever… Again, why?

    8. Why is there no option to backup and restore screenshots and videos to a USB drive? There’s no way to save them to the cloud, so if you’re forced to do a system reset, like I have twice now, you cannot backup your captures to the ps5 from a USB, because reasons….. Why???

    9. Why is there no player search option? I literally cannot find a way to search for players and add them. At all… Why??

    10. There’s no use making player accounts for friends because you cannot backup or restore their saves if you want to game on another system, or are forced to do system restores.

    10. We need a family pass where we can add players of our family to our already expensive and forced plus subscription.

Finally: Maybe communicate with your players better? Or allow us to communicate our problems and suggestions for your system we just paid money for?

    Thanks.

  • I missed voting completely, didn’t even know it was on. Cheers for compiling anyway.

Most of my votes would have gone to Ghost of Tsushima and Sucker Punch, but all of the first party studios and games placed are top shelf.

  • Give me a freaking break, Last of Us 2 sucked balls. My guess is, Sony just did whatever the hell they wanted, no matter what got voted in since Last of Us 2’s sales took a freaking nosedive after all the simps bought it so they are trying to boost its underwhelming sales numbers bc it still hasnt turned a profit lol. Trash game, these awards are nothing more than a marketing scheme.

  • TLOU2 wins best narrative, voted by Dumb & Dumber society.

  • The only award that TLOU2 truly deserves is the accessibility award, and probably graphics, but that’s it.

  • Tlou2, platinum in narrative and sound track? Are you f#$&ing serious?

Now I wish more people knew about this little voting.

  • I am not a fan of TLOU series (have no dog in this race). I just hope beyond hope that the extremely talented and hard working devs got their well deserved bonuses from ND CEOs and Druckman.
I also hope Druckman learnt from this mess and now knows to give his team more time going forward and that sometimes silence is the best course of action. Let your work speak for you not your political stances. But I highly doubt it.

  • I mean who’s really surprised by this I don’t care about awards anymore it just divides this community everytime let’s just stop talking about last of us part 2 and get on with our lives instead of bickering back and forth like a bunch of babies it makes us look like 🤡🤡🤡 TBH

  • Any games that are developed under forced crunch time are not deserving of any awards and should be voided.

  • Tlou2 cleaned up, even with their in your face lgbt2+q7lmnop propaganda

  • Totally agreed with voters! TLOUII is definitely best game of the year, I still didn’t try Thusima, but TLOUII I’ve finished till Platinum 👍🏼

  • There are talks now that Cyberpunk 2077 maybe sued by investors for misleading advertising. The case can be said for The Last Of Us Part 2, that was also a form misleading the public. However the Dumb & Dumber society can’t see that. You can educate arrogant people but not stupid people.

No need to talk about this game anymore, hopefully it will be forgotten soon enough. This game was a disappointment in terms of story and false
    advertising.

    • It will probably be like Borizon zero dawn in the “Sony developers pick their favorite (Sony) games” thing.

Where everyone completely forgot to mention it. Even though it was “game of the generation”. 😂

  • *** CALL OF DUTY MOBILE

  • Ah… I didn’t get a chance to vote. Would have voted for ghost of Tsushima and sucker punch for best studio.

  • Well, I don’t know how square enix even got in the leaderboard after it’s “failure” Marvel’s Avengers came out.

    • I’m not really sure how Square Enix could get on any leaderboard other than “companies who’s game department bled the most money, but still doctored stock reports to show “profit” by selling stuff”.

  • PA-THE-TIC…Sony you are pathetic and this shows the new path you guys are walking, sabotaging Ghost in order to make the filthy fest of TLoU 2 and ND look good Jesus how low you guys have fallen.Came here only to see what I already knew…honestly the only surprise was not seeing abbeye as best new character, guess you guys thought it would be too much to put her in that even though you made that category this year only because of her.

Jesus poor Sucker Punch,I’m sorry for them but glad they have the support from gamers which is what matters…cuz they delivered a fantastic game, didn’t disappoint their fans and made a perfect send-off to the PS4.I know these lame rigged awards don’t mean crap but am just sad to see the company they work for treating them like this in order to damage control a dirty popular game that has an agenda for the gaming industry so oh it gotta look good in the eyes of people.

Credit where it’s due though…TLoU 2 deserved best accessibility features and best graphical showcase but that’s that.

LMAO these bs awards were more rigged than the game awards.

    • Honestly, loads of veterans were just confused, angry, and sad as to how it compares to the first last of us. If last of us 2 is a 10/10 in someone’s mind, last of us 1 is a 15/10. In comparison to newer flagship titles though, it’s pretty good, considering how watch dogs, Assassin’s creed and many other AAA titles have fallen in quality, last of us 2 holds up. Plus, it’s an easy game, it’s story driven, the combat is honestly really good, and that just makes it easy to recommend. I personally prefer Ghost by a landslide to this, but it’s much more sophisticated, it’s story driven, but u can finish it in under a week. It’s really the duels, the combat, and just fluent feeling of being a samurai warrior in 13th century Japan. Ghost caters to a specific audience, and that sucker punch was trying to do, Last of Us, caters to everyone.

  • TLOU2 cleans up as they should, however best soundtrack they shouldnt have been close to winning imo, Final Fantasy 7 shoulda won that by a landslide and probably others ahead of TLOU2 !

  • Hmmm….hello

  • This is obviously as rigged as the election was, seriously The Last of Us Part II was not even close to quality has many other games that went up against.

Only thing that games got going for a good gameplay and that’s it, which isn’t saying much considering other games have good gameplay.

    • Honestly, loads of veterans were just confused, angry, and sad as to how it compares to the first last of us. If last of us 2 is a 10/10 in someone’s mind, last of us 1 is a 15/10. • Last of us is easy to recommend. Simples game. Things like spider man and ghost are sophisticated, and cater to a specific audience.

  • Come on people. Best OST for TLOU2?! Pfff there is no soundtrack. Only cover songs. Even in Ghost of Tsushima only two decent soundtracks.
And the best one FFVIIR in last. I think people are trolling. Or haven’t played any of it just only knows TLOU… Sigh. Really disappointed.

  • The Last of US Part 2 wins Best Soundtrack, but not No Straight Roads? a music action platformer who put a lot of care, effort and explore many different music genre? is it votes rigged or humanity evolution is going backwards

  • Kinda upset Demon’s Soul’s didn’t win ps5 goty :( not saying it’s rigged, but I wish more people paid attention to the soul’s series :/

  • How about @PlayStation you do the creators right and remake #xenogears in its entirety. That means no jumbled, rushed incomplete disc 2. And till it’s completed bring it back to playstation store for all PS platforms. Just like you did for #FF7Remake!

  • Miles Morales is not a new character! Even if you say this is his first appearance in a game, even that isn’t true! He was in the previous Spiderman game! What’s wrong with you people!

  • Congrats to Naughty Dog and TLOU2 but in my opinion, GOT is the real winner. It appeared from nowhere and blowed everybody’s mind. TLOU was already anticipated and has a lot more fans and voters as it is a known title. I guess if more people would have played GOT, it would have won. GOT is the greatest game I’ve ever played. I hope Sucker Punch will build on what they have created and will keep on doing it!

  • best game the last of us 2 i love you playstation😘😘😘😘😘❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
