Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Spotify and more will be on PS5 at launch.
Update: All entertainment apps announced today are scheduled to hit the PS5 console on Day 1.
Hi, everybody! We know that for many of you, your PlayStation console doesn’t get shut off when you’re done playing games. Entertainment like movies, TV shows, music, and gaming livestreams only add to the PlayStation experience. As we continue on our road to PS5 launch, we’re pleased to announce some of the entertainment apps* scheduled to hit the PS5 console on day one, with more apps to come in the future.
Apple TV
- Enjoy Apple TV+, Apple TV channels, new and popular movies, and personalized, curated recommendations on the Apple TV app. That means users can enjoy Apple Originals like Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet, Ted Lasso, and The Morning Show through Apple TV+, subscribe to premium channels, and buy or rent movies and TV shows and access past purchases from Apple. The Apple TV app will also be available on PS4.
Disney+
- The dedicated home for movies, shows, shorts, and originals from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic. From original series like The Mandalorian, to fan favorites like The Simpsons, you can watch your favorite stories right from your PS5 console.
Netflix
- Catch up on top entertainment hits such as Stranger Things, The Haunting of Bly Manor and more. With thousands of TV episodes and movies in Netflix’s library, there’s plenty to choose from.
Spotify
- Listen while you play. Just as with PS4, users can play their favorite songs as background music in-game with Spotify. You can choose from more than 60 million songs while you’re battling bosses or roaming through an open-world adventure.
Twitch
- With a deeply integrated Twitch experience on PS5, you can now watch or livestream your favorite gameplay and chat live about the best moments with fellow gamers throughout the many diverse and dynamic communities.
YouTube
- Also integrated with PS5, you can broadcast and share your epic gameplay moments directly to your YouTube channel, or sit back and watch new and trending content shared from around the world.
Additional streaming apps* coming to PS5 include Amazon Prime Video, MyCanal, Hulu, Peacock, and more.
As we showed in our tour of the PS5 User Experience, there will be a dedicated space exclusively for media entertainment. It’s located right next to the Game home screen, so you can quickly switch between Game or Media content.
Within the Media space, you’ll no longer need to download entertainment apps through PS Store — it’s all in the Media space. Creating dedicated Game and Media spaces for the PS5 user experience will make it fast and easy to switch between gaming and entertainment content whenever you want. The PS5 console also features a new Control Center that makes controlling your music easier than ever before, so you can quickly switch between channels, skip, and pause your music.
At the launch of the PS5 console, there will be a new Media Remote to conveniently navigate and control the entertainment experience on PS5. Users can power on the PS5 console and quickly navigate media with built-in play/pause, fast forward and fast reverse controls. The remote also lets users adjust volume and power settings on compatible TVs, and also features dedicated launch buttons for the following entertainment apps*, Disney+ Netflix, Spotify and YouTube.
We hope you’ll enjoy this experience once PS5 launches in November.
*Internet and account for PlayStation Network required. Streaming services may require paid subscription and are not available in all countries.
Please get 1. Disney +hotstar app, 2. Sony Liv app and apple music for Indian consumers.
Kwes, sod off.
I wish they give a release date to India. We need console before hotstart
Looks slick, Netflix and YouTube buttons are convenient. Luckily I heard that it should be programmable to a degree. I need a VUDU button.
We need discord
Is HBO Max still going to be on it?
I hope so. :(
Curious about that one as well.
Hopefully. But a chance it won’t since Roku and Firestick still do not have an app. At least you can side load it on Firestick.
No
Will we be able to use the picture-in-picture shown in the PS5 UI reveal video for these apps, or is that limited to shared game content via PSN like streams?
Please, say yes.
That would be sweet!
Same (minor) issue as Roku remotes… the app buttons should be programmable to your own preference, not hard-coded to specific apps. Disney+ and Spotify would never be used by me.
This.
It says it all.
When there were only a couple of streaming services it would have been understandable. Yet in 2020 and for the next 7 – 10 years you are limiting people that do not employ these services. Individuals are exactly that, individuals, and they have different tastes and preferences and here you are limiting viewer choice instead of offering a flexible experience. Your payoff from these services should not punish the very customers paying you. In fact some people have been royally shafted by one or two of these operations yet you make a remote that sticks it in their faces.
“the app buttons should be programmable to your own preference, not hard-coded to specific apps.”
I too would prefer user programmable buttons, but branded buttons imply sponsorship. You can pretty much guarantee those 4 were the highest bidders to have their apps logo’d and hard-coded to the remote.
Those logos are there cause they paid Sony to be there. Sad but true.
This way is way more lucrative for Sony. They can sell you a new one next year, with a couple of new buttons (logos) on it.
agreed. the app buttons should just be Memory1, Memory2, etc and be programmable to launch whatever the user wants. Of course, that doesnt bring in the money!
When they first revealed the remote the 4 buttons were white. No logos. Like many people I thought, thank you for consumer choice. I preordered it. But since they are going this route I will wait for a 3rd party or just use the controller. Order canceled.
I second this. Adds on premium devices is such a turn off…
If true, this move just reminds me of when they updated PS4 to the current media hub. It was supposedly for our convenience. But now ~ 75% of my screen is permanently cluttered with featured services that I neither use nor even have installed, pushing all but two of the media apps that I do use regularly off the main screen.
If they allowed that, how would they make money on those buttons?
for 30 dollars this remote should have an led touchscreen in it that shows pre-programmable custom buttons with the app logo of choice. as it stands, it’s 30 bucks to be advertised to everytime one uses it.
Lol
Crunchyroll and Funimation, please? I mean, you already own one of them and may own the other one at some point so where are they?
I’m afraid it’s on Crunchyroll to be here or not. And given their record of business calls…
Funimation is in fact Sony, so it should be here.
Correction. Crunchyroll just confirmed they will be ready for launch.
@vicentecarro
Kudos to the Crunchyroll PR department who seemingly contacted EVERY PUBLICATION that ran the story and got them to update, EXCEPT this one, the original source.
Kudos to the Sony PR department who probably could not be assed to update this post.
Congratulations to both! You’ve won PR done badly.
@steeler192
XD
I have both
@kenny hey what up
Love those dedicated buttons! Can’t wait for launch day :)
I would swap the Spotify and Youtube buttons for Hulu and Amazon Prime video in my house. Would be nice if they let us program them ourselves, but obviously those companies paid up $ to get their own dedicated buttons. Ugh, so lame.
Yeah same here
can you pin media apps like youtube or twitch to the side while playing games?
Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos supported on these apps?
Exactly this! Can we get more detail on this?
Yes please tell me at least Dolby Vision. AppleTV+, Netflix, and Disney+ have Dolby Vision on supported hardware. Please clarify this.
Also please clarify if the UHD player will support Dolby Vision/Atmos?
Been waiting for them to answer this for so long…
So will there be discord or not?
On here?! Always 😜
I hope discord will be on ps5
Nope there will be nothing that Sony can not monitor moderate and control over what is said to each other. They need to be in control of the reporting system. So no outside chat or message programs
Important Question: Will the remote allow Frame by Frame, or Slow motion while watching 4K Blu Ray Disc Movies?
Btw, Yes I already pre-orded through PSDirect.
While it’s nice to have all these apps day 1 on the PS5, please tell me that I’ll be able to watch 360° 3D VR videos natively with my PSVR(2) on my PS5 sometime in the near future…I don’t believe it’ll ever happen though, because why should it, if you want to do this there are like a thousand devices out there already at your disposal, right??
No, wait, that’s not true there’s no device out there for this, but thousands for Netflix, Disney + etc. Sony better get their act together when PSVR2 releases, this was such a baffling omission on PS4 with the original PSVR, it’s astounding.
I agree, it’s a joke. I can’t believe we still don’t have a dedicated 3D VR app for PS5.
look kids VR is still niche, it still needs a few years if not more.
BBC iPlayer? All4?
Will 3rd party remotes (Logitech Harmony) be able to turn on the PS5?
This was a great feature on the PS3 and it’s very annoying it wasn’t allowed on the PS4.
Exactly. At least the PS3 remote was decent, quick and responsive. The PS4 remotes suck, with major lag. We don’t even bother using ours, that’s how bad they are. Just frustrating trying to watch anything with them. Do better this time Sony!
If HBO Max is gonna be there, then I’ll be set with all the streaming services I subscribe to.
Yeah me too
Will Netflix, ATV+ and Disney+ be available in 4K HDR + Dolby Atmos ?
need that Dolby Vision support too!
They haven’t even answered if it’ll support 5.1 with Sony refusing to pay dolby licensing fees. Disappointing so far…
Great to here these apps will be there on day one but I have a few questions about VR media apps. I’m a PSVR owner and I would like to know whether we will also get apps like Littlstar that allows us to watch SBS 3D movies in VR from a flash drive? I would also like to know if the Media App on the PS5 will finally be supporting SBS 3D movies for VR because the PS4 Media App didn’t.
I’d like to know too, but after all these years and zero support on PS4, I’m not gonna hold my breath.
It’s like they’d rather you buy a Quest or PC headset for that. Really disappointing and it’d be such an easy fix.
Sony doesn’t care. You will have Littlstar though, those SoBs really want more money for more than 2 minutes of playback.
Looking forward to using these apps! Makes sense as we you want to keep the player within the Sony system without switching to another system/service. Can this remote be used on PS4 as well?
Will Disney+ have HDR support on PS5? It was never implemented properly on PS4
Disney+ on PS4 Pro is a joke .. No 4K and No Dolby Atmos like the Xbox One X.
All streaming apps on PS4 and PS4 Pro are jokes. Neither Disney+ or Amazon ever get 4K HDR playback, and the Netflix app ALWAYS displays in HDR even when viewing non-HDR content. Hopefully on PS5 this is addressed.
all apps on PS4 Pro suck. Such a missed opportunity for Playstation to be a great media player as well as the games.
xbox 1 x was faux.
Can we finally get an app for Shudder? Apparently it has been in cert review on PS4 forever…
You can sub to Shudder through Amazon Prime and stream that way
why are you actively screwing over your community?
why are you changing your storefront online? do you not want me to buy your games? using the trashstation to buy games is slow and painful and pointless.
why are you screwing over your userbase? what makes you think suits in a board room have the first clue what gamers want/need/will pay for when every single decision you’ve made in the last 6 months have been a bad one? i can’t even search psn.com for games without a headache.
why are you ruining psn? people are cancelling ps5 pre orders left and right? are you guys clueless?
Yeah, so many cancelled preorders, just opening up all the available consoles. Get out of here man. Noone who actually has a preorder cancelled it. Maybe someone has changed their mind because they are racist and don’t like a free BLM theme. Maybe someone doesn’t work a job and needs Gamepass to game at all. I seriously doubt that anyone is not buying a ps5 because the .com store isn’t as awesome as they had hoped. I know I don’t buy consoles based on what its web based store looks like.
the web store is very messed up. it is missing a lot of useful store features that made it easy to use and the server it is running on seems to be a lot more bogged down by the new store front. Not sure if SCEE is at fault for this or SCEA or SCE(Japan and Asia).
The features that are missing are new this week and new this month as well as sorting options like lowest price to highest price so you don’t have to dig through 300+ pages of stuff or dig through every game page to see what dlc released that is free and free content should be able to be added to cart instead of direct to purchase to reduce wasted bandwidth.
Do we know what tv’s the remote is compatable with?
Hopefully it’ll have HBO Max soon. That’s the only streaming app I use on my PS4 because it’s not on Roku.
Hi, will you also support Media Playback ie. MP4, MP3, MKV, AAC, JPG? Also how will past media content purchased from the PlayStation Store, be viewed on PS5? Thanks
MP4, MP3, MKV, AAC, are all containers, what you encode them to matters.
Please add discord! It would be amazing.
no, it’s already dying out for the next app of the month. the only thing it has that people want is per person volume.
Any news regarding TV streaming apps like BBC iPlayer, All 4, ITV Hub and Channel 5?
I’m hoping they the have SKY TV App as I use this as my form of watching tv.
Plex with 4k HDR and Atmos, or none of it matters.
@Dionysus-Jones – Shudder is an available channel under the AppleTV app, so that might be the easiest option. Nice interface, $4.99 a month for Shudder through aTV.
Atmos is the biggest question I have so far! If Sony aren’t going to pay for the Atmos license for the PS5 then my soundsystem is going to be wasted.
@dune_heretic
If you have a decent (and recent) sound system, then your receiver should have Dolby Surround (AKA Dolby UpMixer) and DTS Neural X.
Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are obviously better. However, most people can not discern the difference between them and Dolby Surround / DTS:X.
@RGS396
yeah but I didn’t install ceiling speakers and buy a bunch of 4k Blurays to listen upscaled audio. I bought them to hear Atmos
99 percent of these people can’t tell the difference. They buy “gaming headsets”.
And CrunchyRoll? I guess it will not be there at launch… another one of their great calls probably. :/
So Sony, pretty please, Could you buy CrunchyRoll and fix the whole company? Thanks :)
I’ve never had a good experience with any Crunchyroll app. They don’t stay signed in and only play videos when they feel like.
I’ve just dumped it entirely and get my anime elsewhere now. Someone needs to buy Crunchyroll and modernize it. Still looks like trash from 2006.
For my surprise Crunchyroll just confirmed they will have the app ready for launch. Now we need to check if it works :P :)
No Crackle? Sony isn’t providing their own app at launch? 😂
No tubi?
So does that mean we can put music on your ssd like we could with the PS3?
PS3 was the last “great” Playstion! It was a fantastic media player as well as game console.
The real question is this: Is Discord an integrated app? It’s far superior to most other VOIP services and has become a staple amongst top streamers and it’s even building a professional services version. Discord is a must with cross platform play becoming the norm.
“The real question is this: Is Discord an integrated app?”
With what Sony is doing with PS5 party chat recording under the guise of “safety”, there’s about zero chance we’ll ever see Discord natively on PS5.
Will it be possible to stream media content from a NAS for example ? like it was possible from the PS3 ?
Or even connect to network located iTunes library ?
Would the SKY TV App still be supported?
That’s cool and all but you need to fix what you broke sony fix update 8.00 it’s god awful and a bloody nightmare
Would love to be able to pin TV to the side whilst playing a game. sticking the football on whilst playing fifa is the dream.
I’m still waiting to see if we’ll able to get Atmos out the media apps. I have a soundbar with up-firing speakers and I’ll be particularly salty if they’re useless with PS5.
They’ve said no atmos. Might not even be 5.1. They’re focusing on headphone audio…
What is with Amazon Prime Music and Deezer as a Music App? 🙃 And what is about a Facebook Connection for sharing Screenshots and more? You did delete the Option on PS4, and maybe an Discord Connection like on Xbox Live? 😊🥰
Hoping the ps5 will support dolby vision on some of the streaming apps!
That’s good news! But still the apps feature 4K, HDR, and Dolby Atmos. And what about the 4K Blu-ray player? Will there be Dolby Vision support?
Will the apps*
I was hoping for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, to make this viable as the main media player in the house, but I’m going to guess that if those were supported they would’ve mentioned it.
What res will these stream at? Hopefully 4K. My Smart TV apps are starting to break down.
Whats the point if we cant even buy the friggin console !
I only ever use Netflix other than gaming, and it was already a bit of a hassle to get to it on PS4. Even worse after it got bumped back by Disney+. I just use Netflix on my smart tv now (only recently got one), and can let the console rest in the meanwhile.
iPlayer, All 4, ITV Hub, UKTV Play, Sky etc better there there at launch for the UK.
Going backwards is not a good impression.
This article is mainly focus to usa market but if UK /EU based tv companies were handed the ps5 information to make an app then yes they will
…patiently waiting for any mention of PLEX or Discord.
Right there with you. Plex is an absolute necessity.
discord would be so sick
Hulu?
Giv us Twittur fou Streamin
I know Sony is doing their own thing for game audio, but will the streaming media and the 4K HD Blu Ray player support things like Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision?
Dolby Vision and Atmos support with apps and bluray is going to be super important to some of us.
Please bring over the Spectrum app. I’d like to view all content via the PS5.
Will it be YouTube TV or just YouTube?
This^
Will YouTube support 4K HDR ?
i would like to know too!
Will the official PDP remote for PS4 will be compatible with PS5 ?
I won’t understand why it wouldn’t but I prefer to ask :-)
Nope
