UPDATE: Following this update, users are seeing a notification about Party Safety and that voice chats in parties may be recorded. Voice chat recording for moderation is a feature that will be available on PS5 when it launches, and will enable users to record their voice chats on PS5 and submit them for moderation review. The pop up you’re seeing on PS4 right now is to let you know that when you participate in a chat with a PS5 user (post-launch), they may submit those recordings from their PS5 console to SIE.  

Our latest system software update for PlayStation 4, version 8.00, is launching today globally. This update includes changes to the existing Party and Messages features, new avatars, updated parental controls and more.

Here are some of the key features in this update:

Updates to Party and Messages

Following this update, Party and Messages will be more tightly linked together and you will see changes to the UI. Both apps will now use the same ‘Groups’ of players for Party voice chats and message exchanges, instead of having different groups setup across the two apps. So now you can start a Party chat or send a message to the group you’ve previously chatted with across PS4, as well as PS5 when it launches.

New Avatars

We’re expanding the collection of pre-set avatars for players to showcase on their Profile. An array of new avatars from your favorite games will be available, including Bloodborne, Journey, Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, The Last of Us Part II, The Last of Us Remastered, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and many more.

Mute all Mics from Quick Menu

We’ve added an option to “Mute all Microphones” in the Quick Menu, so you can easily mute your mics while gaming.

Simplified and more flexible Parental Controls

Under Parental Controls, we’re combining the ‘Communicating with Other Players’ and ‘Viewing Content Created by other Players’ into one setting – ‘Communication and User Generated Content’-  to cover both areas of communication and UGC sharing. This offers a simpler setting that’s easier for parents to understand and apply to their children.

 In addition, children can send a request to their parents to use communications features in specific games. When a child sends this request, the parent will receive an email notification and can choose to make an exception for that game and allow the child to use its communications and UGC features. This will provide more flexibility to both parents and children.

Enhanced 2-Step Verification

The 2-Step Verification (2SV) feature on PS4 will be enhanced to support third party authenticator apps as an option during the activation flow and 2SV sign-in across PS4, mobile and web.

Removal of Event Creation and Private Community Creation

After 8.00, you will no longer be able to create Events or access existing Events created by other users.

We’re also removing the ability to create private Communities under the Community app on PS4. If you already have existing private Communities, you can continue to access them.

Updates to Remote Play App on Mobile and PC

At the same time as 8.00, the existing PS4 Remote Play app on mobile (iOS/Android), Windows PC and Mac, will change its name to PS Remote Play, and the option to connect to PS5 will be added. You’ll need to sign in to PSN from your PS5 to be able to access the feature, so sit tight until PS5 launches this November!

 As a reminder, a PS4 system with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended to download the update.

    Absolutely horrible update. Can’t just jump into friends chat. I always kept my chat open so friends could pop in whilst playing. Think I’m going to have to rethink the ps5 at this rate. Xbox is suddenly more appealing!

    This is possibly the worst update ever and nobody is doing anything about it
    My database got corrupted right after installing this update

    And when turning on my PS4 it never connects to PSN now
    It’s not my Wifi either because when I do a test everything else is connected but it fails on logging into PSN

    This update is so strict and stupid that I might just get an Xbox now honestly
    I’ve played for over 5 years now on the PS4 and never had any issues up until now and they are not helpful with it at all either.

    I seriously don’t like the way parties work now, not having the possibility to just create a party where any of your friends and even +1 can join without notifying the whole world is really a pain. The result is that we cannot just jump to say hi to friends no more… It is kind of forcing players to stay in their small groups, and it is not what I want, I met so many players by casually jumping into a party of a friend where I was not especially invited first.
    And the new recording option seems intrusive, I don’t see myself or any of my friends using that kind of feature.

    This can’t be the last update do to all the problems we are all having with it I never had a problem till y’all made me update it. How did y’all make me update? Because I can not sign in ps account with updating there for I can’t play. I didn’t want to update because all the problems people are having with it now that I did update I’m having problems now. So my question is when will y’all release the last stable update for ps4 ?thanks.

    Hope I’m not being a “jerk“, but I hate this update, ever since I’ve done the update I’ve had nothing but problems with my Ps4 pro, I blue screen more and now I’m stuck in this safe mode thing were I need to download a file on a usb then upload that file too my PlayStation, I don’t know why I have to do this when other people tell me that they didn’t, I don’t really care about the party update and one last thing the PlayStation support is very bad the help is simple Stuff that I’ve tried already and there’s nothing on there that helps me with the usb problem

    Please change the party setting back to normal. This 8.0 is not user friendly or practical. Previous settings were perfect and one of the reasons I always say you guys are better than Xbox.

    Yea no, ima be a jerk because I’m normally too lazy to say if something is bad, but THIS update 8.0 is a dumpster fire.

    I really could care less about the privacy thing because I assumed you were already, but at least you guys are being transparent about it but PLEASE revert the whole thing back. I’m not say fire the person directly over this BUT please reassign them somewhere else, unless they have learned from this experience and will do better from now on

    I’m not happy with this new update, not only are there a but ton of glitches that make the ps4 unworkable (and maybe the PS5 as well), but now I hear a crooked chinese corporation has sunk their hands into sony as well… looks like I’m “NOT” pre-ordering the PS5!

    We didn’t need any changes at the party. We just needed an improvement in stability.
    The system is now extremely horrible: in addition to appearing several groups of messages puts the cause of the parties, removed the option to make it public. Even more absurd was the removal of the Collective Game and joining the party friends’ game.
    Another change that is bizarre is that if I silence someone at the party, they will still hear me normally.
    This update was really a throwback to the PS4. If not the worst, it is one of the worst updates since it was released in 2013.
    I hope you recognize that these changes were for the worse and go back to what it was before.

    2020 has been an awful year and update 8.00 is not helping. If the update is here to stay consider the following recommedndations.

    PlayStation 4 and 5 User Experience for party chats recommendation.
    • Public parties – a party that is open to all of your friends to join without any invites to a message chat and bring back community parties.
    • NSFW chat – a party that is exempt from most of the offensive language policy.
    o 18+ only
    o Offensive language policy
    > Except for derogatory language.

    Why would you remove private party and party size? When running raids or even just doing pvp how do you keep randos out of the party??
    And the way to invite people from messenger is retarded it makes it way harder to add people. Not everyone I want to invite is from the same group of friends every time.
    Huge step in the wrong direction. What did you do hire someone from Xbox to design this?

    I see all these complaints about privacy violations with the recording voice chat. Wow uhm, did you read their explanation? Its for a feature that will be on ps5, NOT PS4 to allow people to provide evidence to chat rules being broken in voice chat… its the same as if you reported someone for being a prick in text, they check the messages or chat for rule violations…

    Now on to the party system… why the hell would you do this Sony… I mean really, why… you essentially made communities unusable save for message boards and for people who wanna play together but not be friends, it’s not possible. For example, I enjoy gta airline ps4 rp, those reqtogether. Play together is goney chat and play togehter.

    Anyone dislikes this update @playstation, check youtube and message board like riddit if ya think its just a few of us.

    Everyones bothered they removed the most helpful thing in party chats, (play together). For those who dont know what this is, it allowed you to inv everyone in the party chat to your game. Very helpful if someone was appearing offline or invites in game are glitching out, used this feature 10x a day…

    Other annoyance cant see whos in a party unless you’re in their messages, which sucks cuz if you have a crew chat then you can’t inv randoms into your current party chat cuz they’ll see the groups personal messages now… Sooo you gotta make a whole new chat and if you’re like me with 400 friends, you gotta scroll through 100s of friends. Better hope that guy with the gametag starting with S is appearing online… Cuz everyone knows it takes forever for friends list to show when scrolling…

    Oh and muting ppl in party chat now makes it so you cant hear them but they can hear you! Wtf is that bs. If im putting someone on mute its so they can’t hear me and i cant hear them. Imagine you’re on a phone call and you put yourself on mute so you can fart, burp, or whatever that is to keep the audio hidden. Anyway well now that conference call heard you let one rip…. these new features are so dumb playstation. Oh lol they said they added a mute yourself in quickmenu. Well guys, its always been there by just choosing mute on your own name in party chat or unpluging headphones, mind blown!

    PS needs to put party chats back to the way it was. I loved seeing my friends in a chat and just popping in to say hello. I know some ppl hated that sometimes but thats why ya were able to make private one. / bring back play together/ fix your mute system/ and stop making party chat through message groups./ but keep the one and only good feature, able for owner of groups message to remove ppl.

    Dear Sony,

    I am NOT impressed, nor happy with your current firmware-update.

    Over the time of the last 5 years I did invest quite some gaming hours, did build a group of friends, BUT your latest update makes it incredibly difficult (impossible) to easily exchange with people in an other party. No overview of already existing parties. I need to always create new groups… and on and on and on.

    The old firmware was easy to understand and did provide everything I needed or required. I would have prefered to build up on the old version. Potentially offer the ability to switch back to the old lay-out and options.

    The new version seems to be anti-group play, anti-community building… – SONY, you can do better

    What were you guys even thinking with this update on parties it’s wack AND sometimes it doesn’t show people’s names on the party screen and sometimes when your in a party it doesn’t show the party screen and it goes to other public parties and speaking of that what’s the point of removing party leader, kicking people and private parties!     so if sony cut our features completely from psn, and web store why is it you felt the need to start begging for more cash for psn? microsoft have removed the cost to play online, why are you charging us through the nose for features that have now been stripped. if psn used to be steam then this is like epic games store. you seriously need to start prioritising whats important to you. More customers, or more cash in the here and now.

    So how come I can’t access games paid for on my partners account? I’ve lost hours and hours of game play?
    Even my children can’t access their games…. Why? Will it change? Or will we need to purchase games each? Because that’s just unfair….

    This update takes away our ability to control who we interact with and how. Im now forced to create multiple group chats per “group” of friends to play with.

    Some days you just don’t want to play with crazy sam but crazy sam is apart of your messenger group now your forced to invite them to your party every single time one is created or create an entire new group without sam and whoever you don’t feel like playing with that day. I unfortunately have many sam’s an I just want to make a party that’s private so I can play with whoever I decide to invite to that party. I don’t need my messages and parties linked. I have too many friend groups and would like total control over who and how I communicate. A party is not a message thread an a message thread is not a party.

    What if you meet a random in a game and just want to add them to the party to communicate better? Now you’re stuck with them in that message thread forever unless you ask everyone to leave the message group when the game is over.

    Please fix it. We want parties and messages.. Not whatever this new integrated feature is.

    I don’t know if this update is tied to the web/mobile store update but those sites now are horrible to navigate, have bad color/style, is missing media for games(pic and video), there’s no sorting or filters. The new site is 10 steps backwards and no steps forward.
    Someone wanted “different” for the sake of being different without improving the experience for the user.

    my ps4 didn’t have enough space for the update and I left right before the update came out to go to a homies house and brought my ps4 now it won’t even turn on tells me to go and get a flash drive and when I did said can’t find the update could use sum advice

    Fw8.00 it’s broken. System keeps freezing/lagging, controller keeps disconnecting, and i can’t even see who is online or play online.

    Its really messed up.

    hello. i am shahkarif100. i have to say something. i downloaded the update file, 8.00, the latest one, inserted my FAT32 (sorta offensive) into the laptop, made PS4 folder, made UPDATES folder in the PS4 folder, cut the PS4UPDATE.PUP file and pasted into the UPDATES file. did that, inserted it into the PS4, and…says i got the wrong update file. did this at least 5 times and did not work. its hell because my wifi very stupidly slow. pls fix, or i have to go outside and enjoy the view.

    This update bricked my console. The UI is mad unresponsive, it takes up to 10 seconds to register I’ve pressed a button or the ps4 just freezes when I try to do something. Cut scenes have no audio, loading screens & fast travel takes literally 5 minutes. Warzone wasn’t rendering and it was like I was looking at a world made of play dough. Amazon Prime is freezing. Games are crashing and telling me to reinstall. Tried rebuilding the database several times. It started with just a slow UI and Apex not starting. It got worse every day until I couldn’t get past safe mode and had to do a factory reset… I just had to do another factory reset after the whole system crashed while I was trying to play GOT. Their response? They want me to send it in and charge me £175 to fix a problem they caused!

    Sony sort it out and revert this update please it’s trash, I understand randoms in the party chat griefing but we can mute them or kick them from the party or even make it private so they cant join, the community is asking for you to change it back take note Sony

    This is by far the worst ps4 update. We get that you want users to upgrade to the ps5 but all this is doing is frustrating users. I know dozens of people who plan on buying the new Xbox instead of the ps5 because of this update.

    Just downloaded the update, PlayStation won’t even run a restart sequence to finish the update, no error code. Anyone else dealing with this issue? I just moved states, and I just wanna play my game to destress… If its a known issue, for the love of all things holy, fix it…
