UPDATE: Following this update, users are seeing a notification about Party Safety and that voice chats in parties may be recorded. Voice chat recording for moderation is a feature that will be available on PS5 when it launches, and will enable users to record their voice chats on PS5 and submit them for moderation review. The pop up you’re seeing on PS4 right now is to let you know that when you participate in a chat with a PS5 user (post-launch), they may submit those recordings from their PS5 console to SIE.  

Our latest system software update for PlayStation 4, version 8.00, is launching today globally. This update includes changes to the existing Party and Messages features, new avatars, updated parental controls and more.

Here are some of the key features in this update:

Updates to Party and Messages

Following this update, Party and Messages will be more tightly linked together and you will see changes to the UI. Both apps will now use the same ‘Groups’ of players for Party voice chats and message exchanges, instead of having different groups setup across the two apps. So now you can start a Party chat or send a message to the group you’ve previously chatted with across PS4, as well as PS5 when it launches.

New Avatars

We’re expanding the collection of pre-set avatars for players to showcase on their Profile. An array of new avatars from your favorite games will be available, including Bloodborne, Journey, Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, The Last of Us Part II, The Last of Us Remastered, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and many more.

Mute all Mics from Quick Menu

We’ve added an option to “Mute all Microphones” in the Quick Menu, so you can easily mute your mics while gaming.

Simplified and more flexible Parental Controls

Under Parental Controls, we’re combining the ‘Communicating with Other Players’ and ‘Viewing Content Created by other Players’ into one setting – ‘Communication and User Generated Content’-  to cover both areas of communication and UGC sharing. This offers a simpler setting that’s easier for parents to understand and apply to their children.

 In addition, children can send a request to their parents to use communications features in specific games. When a child sends this request, the parent will receive an email notification and can choose to make an exception for that game and allow the child to use its communications and UGC features. This will provide more flexibility to both parents and children.

Enhanced 2-Step Verification

The 2-Step Verification (2SV) feature on PS4 will be enhanced to support third party authenticator apps as an option during the activation flow and 2SV sign-in across PS4, mobile and web.

Removal of Event Creation and Private Community Creation

After 8.00, you will no longer be able to create Events or access existing Events created by other users.

We’re also removing the ability to create private Communities under the Community app on PS4. If you already have existing private Communities, you can continue to access them.

Updates to Remote Play App on Mobile and PC

At the same time as 8.00, the existing PS4 Remote Play app on mobile (iOS/Android), Windows PC and Mac, will change its name to PS Remote Play, and the option to connect to PS5 will be added. You’ll need to sign in to PSN from your PS5 to be able to access the feature, so sit tight until PS5 launches this November!

 As a reminder, a PS4 system with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended to download the update.

    The party system needs to be reverted. Im not buying a PS5, and when my PS+ expires I will be done with Playstation unless this update gets rolled back or the party system gets fixed.

    This ‘update’ was a really bad move from Sony… Starting a party takes more time and is harder than it needs to be. Plz fix this fast.

    Sony really need to fix this update the new party system is useless no one is happy about it
    When i was trying to play alone create a private solo party the volume of the system will automatically reduced so i do not need to adjust the sound in my TV or the games , the new system just can not do any of that can not create solo party unless someone is offline and you create a group with them the voice wont reduce until another player is in your party , like the new system it self is a huge bug.
    hope they will fix it.

    No more open partys for friends to jump in and out of… now i have to make groups upon groups for every conversation I have and be notified to death when someone leaves one… this will be insane to manage

    Communitys has been gutted

    Overly unnecessary moderation, people can block and mute players already now if someone slips out something someone can misconstrue as something offensive out of context i can report them and cost them there entire collection of games via ban ? Lol

    Me and my friends personally don’t like the new update, we feel like there was no need for a new update and the party changes and notifications are stupid plus you can only talk and create a party with someone through group text instead of inviting ppl and it’s a really annoying and stupid update pls fix it.

    Sony i am truly disappointed with the way you have changed the party system i cant be in a party by my self when i play games like COD etc. But when i wanna play with my friends i have to an extra ” 5mins” to add them to a group chat absolutely ridiculous. Just please for the love of god changed the chat party back

    Ok I get the voice recording thing and I actually recommend it . Can you please change the party system to how it was before and keep the voice recording because we actually need it .

    The ps4 remote play doesn’t even work anymore. Won’t even load just gives me an error. At this point an xbox sounds acceptable :(

    I’ve had my personal Playstation account since 2012. I used to play on my dads PS2 when I was a little boy. This update has really made me think about switching to the Xbox for the upcoming next gen system. Why? They don’t have any problem like this. The entire Playstation menu has been slow for years, party chats used to be simple yet effective… there’s a saying, “if it ain’t broke, no need to fix it”. I understand recording our chats for legal reasons which is fair in this day and age. But everything else that came with the most recent update is not good and not thought out. Why can’t I just be in a party by myself and invite whoever the heck I want too? You can on the Xbox! I think I can speak on behalf of a lot of people. Fix you game Playstation, your plan isn’t working. Do it soon before you start to lose a lot.

    This update is utterly ridiculous, it creates a massive problem with groups due to having a private group with people I know to having to create random message groups so random players don’t see any personal information that we may have posted. If this isn’t reverted or improved i will not be supporting Sony in the next gen release.

    Honestly terrible we say bad stuff and send bad stuff all the time and it’s always a joke and now they we get banned for it like I underStand why but like everyone is getting banned for it. I don’t like how they record everything now it’s dumb and a violation of privacy. Other then that I like everything else

    Really hoping you guys can reverse this before the PS5 launch. The only good change to the party system was adding an all mute button. The private messages that have been sent to specific people should not be shared with others that join a party. A new chat should just be automatically created and deleted when a party starts and ends. It should not be persistent and combining two of the options in parental controls is objectively worse that leaving them separate. This just gives less options if you want user generated content but not voice chat. This update has really put me off playing my playstation because of how completely backwards thinking it all has been.

    Although there are some good new options with the update there are many very frustrating ones. For one I would like not to invite or be invited to a party and be added into another chat. I have to now go through a ton of messages to see actual messages and leave every single party chat message now. Secondly now if friends have an open party I cannot just open the party menu and select their party. Kind of a waste of time to be honest since most of them use discord now for actual messages not psn. And lastly if you are all in a party now you cannot just join the game off of someone name in the party you must wait for invites, another waste of time if they are in a game already and your trying to join the lobby. I could care less if the recorded party chat option as I think this is a good security feature for kids but…This update is frustrating enough to make me consider buying the new Xbox instead of the ps5 after years of being a PlayStation member and spending 10’s of thousands of dollars over the last 15 years.

    Sony you forgot to mention… MUTING SOMEONE, only makes it so you can’t hear them now, but THEY CAN STILL HEAR YOU. Absolutely horrible update, and now my friends found out about something I was trying to speak privately to someone else

    Unless you have error code SU-42118-6 preventing installation of system software update 8.00. If that happens you can’t access Playstation store or play any of the online games you paid a lot of money for…….

    Can yo please fix the problem with the Party I dislike that I have to inv someone to be in a party. I use earbuds and what sucks is when I play online in public games I cant mute them so i have to make a party but now i have to inv someone just so I have to be I a party plz fix.

    Since the Remote-Play Update I dont have audio anymore on my PC (Win10Pro 64bit). When I click on un-mute for the mic, it says it uses the remote mic. Wasnt able to verify that.

    Audio works fine on my Android smartphone with Remote Play update. I uninstalled and installed it again, but still no audio. Video works fine. Even 1080p.

    I find the changes made to PlayStation parties to be unnecessary. Rather than creating a party and inviting people, you must create a party and send an invitation to a message group. On top of that, I’m not sure if this is just my personal experience but I see no available parties that I can join in the party menu unless I receive an invitation.

    Who in they right mind thought that this update was a good Idea. This is literally the worse update I’ve ever seen. Literally nobody like this update. I can’t even see if anyone created a party. To be honest, the game was perfect the way it was. They just made it a lot worse. This update makes absolutely no sense. Sony needs to be aware of this and fix it ASAP.

    Just went and spent $70 on a controller because mine started acting funny. New one is doing the same thing. Started with the update. Sony, I think you owe me $70 and an explanation. A fix would be great too. Hard to play when my controller is going haywire. 😡

      Try changing your registered email address. I wasnt able to sign in to psn, but changing my email seemed to work. It might help with your issue too

    If people are having the issue where it keeps signing you out of psn when you try to sign in, i saw a suggestion on reddit that worked for me. Change your registered email address through the playstation site and try to log in on your console with the new email.

    This new party update is so terrible that I literally think ps3 had better parties ,this party update made so disgusted that I had to run to my bathroom to throw up. PlayStation this update is so bad ive had more than 4 discussions on how bad this new party update is ,if anything instead of playing and trying to enjoy this update i rather wait for a party update thats good. For now I’m using discord because they have a smidgen of care for players trying to talk to each other.:)

    Can’t download it…system freezes while downloading and I have to go into safe mode to get out of the freeze loop.
    Last update (7.6) I think, disabled my blu-ray player. I was hoping this update would fix that issue. I’m getting really annoyed at you Sony.

    I don’t mind the update as a whole but why combine messages and parties, its not helpful its worse, do you know how many random people i have in parties and i don’t want to have to create a new message group every time because i would have 100s and i shouldn’t have to sit here inviting and kicking someone out of a message group every time. I wish i could but i don’t understand who thought this was a good idea in the first place and how no testers didn’t warn you against this either. I can only assume they have no friends on thier consoles.
    I’ve been with Sony since the PS1 and you have done a lot of stupid things but this is the one that’s got me really frustrated. Please change them back to how it used to but #SeparatePartyandMessages

    As a NOOB here no one has addressed these issues concerning group play especially for people who have not developed friends online, or is new to online play. Am I missing something here?
