When the PlayStation 5 launches this November, more than 99 percent of the 4000+ games available on PS4 will be playable on PS5. We know you have questions about how PS4 games will work on PS5, so here is a quick overview on some common questions we’ve seen from the PlayStation community.

What console generation games are supported with PS5’s backward compatibility feature?

We are focused on the huge catalog of games on PlayStation 4, and we’re pleased that more than 99% of PS4 games will be playable on PS5 on day one. This includes games that have defined the PS4 generation – from critically acclaimed PlayStation exclusives like The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima, to blockbuster hits from our third-party partners.

What is the difference between playing PS4 games on the PS5 Digital Edition console, versus the PS5 console with the Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive?

The gaming experience on both models will be the same. However, how you access the content to play will differ:

PS5 Digital Edition

  • You will be able to play digital versions of your compatible PS4 games on the PS5 Digital Edition console. These will be compatible PS4 digital games you have already purchased, or plan to purchase, via PlayStation Store on PS4, PS5, web or PlayStation mobile app.
  • Since there is no disc drive, you won’t be able to play your PS4 disc-based games on the PS5 Digital Edition.

PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive

  • You can play digital versions of your compatible PS4 games you downloaded from PlayStation Store on PS4, PS5, web or PlayStation mobile app.
  • You can also use physical PS4 game discs.

When you sign in to PS5 with your account for PlayStation Network, you will automatically see your library of played PS4 content through the menu.

Be sure to keep the PS5 console updated to the latest system software update available, and apply all available game patches to the game.

What is the PS4 game experience like on PS5?

PS4 titles get even better on PS5. Select PS4 titles will see increased loading speeds on the PS5 console, and will also leverage Game Boost, offering improved or more stable frame rates. Some titles with unlocked frame rates or dynamic resolution up to 4K may see higher fidelity. Additionally, PS4 games will also take advantage of some of PS5’s new UX features, but more to come on that later.

Are games from PlayStation VR backward compatible?

Yes, PlayStation VR games are included among the thousands of PS4 games that are playable on PS5. Playing PS VR games on a PS5 console requires a PS VR headset, PlayStation Camera for PS4* and a PlayStation Camera adaptor (no purchase required. Visit playstation.com/camera-adaptor for details). For the best PS VR experience on PS5 we recommend using a DualShock 4 wireless controller. Selected games may require PS Move motion controllers or be compatible with the PS VR aim controller. The new HD camera for PS5 is not compatible with PS VR. The PS VR headset, PS Camera, DualShock 4 wireless controller, PS Move controllers and PS VR aim controller are all sold separately from PS5.

What about PS4 games on PS Now and PS Plus?

Backward compatible PS4 games included in PS Plus or PS Now will run on PS5.

Can I stream PS4 games on PS5?

Yes, Remote Play from PS4 to PS5 and PS Now streaming are supported. The benefit of streaming is that you can save your storage space on PS5. Please note that PS4 games will not leverage PS5’s Game Boost through streaming.

How do PS4 game transfers and game saves work between the two consoles?

You can transfer digital games, game data, and game saves from a PS4 console to a PS5 console using LAN cables, or by connecting wirelessly (WiFi). If you’ve already stored PS4 games and game data in the external USB storage device connected to your PS4, you can bring them over to PS5 with that external USB storage device. And if you are a PS Plus member, you can also sync PS4 game saves on PS5 through cloud storage.

Please note that the ability to transfer game saves between a PS4 version and a PS5 version of the same game is a developer decision, and will vary title by title for cross-generational games.

For Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, when players decide to upgrade from PS4 to PS5 their game saves will transfer.* Sackboy: A Big Adventure also will support game save transfers from PS4 to PS5 in an update that will be delivered shortly after the release of the game.* We’ll share additional details on both games closer to launch.

How will I know which PS4 games aren’t playable?

Games that are only playable on PS4 will be noted on PlayStation Store as playable on “PS4 only.” We have a list of games that are only playable on PS4, along with additional information on backward compatibility here: playstation.com/ps5-backwards-compatibility

*If players originally purchase a PS4 game disc, the PlayStation 5 with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive is required to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version of the game and transfer their saves over.

    Well, this are some of the important questions, but I have another which is not answered. Would the PS5 support officially any 3rd party “cheats” such as the famous Hori Tac mouse and keyboard emulator which is used to ruin the gameplay of competitive games which does NOT support such devices? You know I would like to know Sony position on this and if the answer is “Yes” I would like to know why? Why they betray me and anyone else who play the game as it is intended to be played?

    Well,after all the conjecture/speculation,glad to see (knock on wood),most of my ps4 back catalog & indies in particular should work. I’m hopeful the “unexpected bugs,& try the base game before you buy the dlc”,is similar legal speak to the PS4 Pro “Boost” Mode caveats when they launched it as a feature.
    With Naughty Dog confirming the Jak ps2 classics on ps4 work,will be crossing my fingers games like GTA Vice City,GTA SA,Canis Canem Edit,RE Code Veronica X,& Metal Slug work too!
    Also relieved to hear things regarding the external HDD ps4 games library works exactly as Mark Cerny’s ps5 reveal outlined. My only other main query at this stage is if ps5 games can be stored,(not played obviously),alongside the ps4 ones & swapped back onto the SSD to help free up space,given SSD expansion will be pricey in the short term?

      Yes, you can store PS5 games on external HDD (and swap them to SSD to play, like you said).

    It’s too late. I contacted PS support on twitter a couple weeks ago to ask these very questions and got a non-response. I was planning to sell my PS4 Pro and upgrade to a PS5, but with backwards compatibility being so uncertain and support being so useless particularly in juxtaposition to the competition who were very forthright and helpful, I’m going in another direction this generation. Perhaps I’ll return when the PS5 Pro comes out.

    Will I be able to download digital PS4 titles directly to the PS5 from my online library? I plan on selling my PS4, and I don’t want to buy external storage if I don’t have to. This article makes it seem like you can download from your online library, but then in another section it goes on today that you can transfer digital games and game data via external USB device. I know I don’t have to worry about my game saves since I have PS+ cloud storage. I am still mighty confused though.

    Also It goes better if PS App on phone gets full interaction with PS5 UI, like checking apps and games library that will playable on ps5, controlling console downloads and notifications with phone without using controller and etc…

    Thank you for clearing this up. I am happy to have backwards compatibility for PS4 games on the PS5! I would also like to see backwards compatibility for PSone, PS2, PS3 and PSP (digital) games on the PS5. It would make me really happy to see this added through a future update! This is one of my most wanted features.

    Hello. After the release date of the PS5, will all future PS4 titles be a free upgrade to PS5 going forward? I’ve consistently run two PlayStation system iterations at a time for years. Currently, I have the PS4 in the living room and the PS3 in the guest room. Once the PS5 takes over the living room, I’ll of course move the PS4 to the living room with the PS3/PS2/PS1/Vita. My PS4 collection is completely digital and I’m just trying to see if all my digital purchases are to continue on the PS4, then just download them to both the PS4 and PS5 (as the free upgrade).     All good . One question I know you need a adaptor for your ps4 camera and that it is free, to use your ps vr but will the adaptor be included with the ps5 . I h save been given a bit of wrong information from PlayStation I was told that the best way to insure my psvr works is to purchase the new ps5 camera . Now I read it will not be compatible.

      480 up to 8K, you should be fine. and no need to upgrade your TV. it will work with your current TV as HDMI V2.1 is backwards compatible

    This is more of a Question? Do i need HDMI v2.1 to play the PS5. 60hz Refresh is plenty for me, my TV is 4K with HDR. To let you know it is a beginner 4K from TCL. i think its a 43S421.

      No, HDMI 2.0b which is the current standard supports 4K @60Hz.

      You would only need HDMI 2.1 for games that support 120Hz which will be very few and generally competitive fps games.

    Question about the PS Camera adaptor. I know that the PS Camera adaptor is coming – but is it coming inside of the box or do you have to contact Sony to have the PS Camera adaptor shipped out? Also, what if let’s say you do happen to lose or misplace (or perhaps damage) the adaptor – do you have to contact Sony to purchase (or obtain another free adaptor) or will it be sold on shelves? I was just wondering.

      Chances are when ps5 is out there will be a email address that you can use to contact Sony to claim the adapter (note adapter is free but I think they will charge shipping costs)

I am thinking I might not want to bring all my PS4 games over to the PS5 but at the same time don’t want to delete them from my PS4 (I will be keeping my PS4) and only want to bring over a few select games (basically only the ones that will have PS5 updates)

      Get a tile and super glue it to the inside of the black plastic chassis, or right down the Model and serial like i do and put in a safe place so you have it ready to report it into your local PD or Shariffs office (if not corrupted)

      Trademark issues can take from six months to ten years all going by how strong a case is how much evidence is required and so on. From what I have read about this one is its a cut and dry case of someone trademarking it before Sony and so now it is a fight to prove they did it knowing Sony is using it or honest mistake but now wants money

    I wish PlayStation would make the PS5 into a handheld console as well, I don’t even care if the graphics wouldn’t be as good as long as I can play my games no lag then I’m satisfied. Probably call it the PS5 Go or something, I don’t even care if they take that name, you can copyright it Sony Idc.
