When the PlayStation 5 launches this November, more than 99 percent of the 4000+ games available on PS4 will be playable on PS5. We know you have questions about how PS4 games will work on PS5, so here is a quick overview on some common questions we’ve seen from the PlayStation community.

What console generation games are supported with PS5’s backward compatibility feature?

We are focused on the huge catalog of games on PlayStation 4, and we’re pleased that more than 99% of PS4 games will be playable on PS5 on day one. This includes games that have defined the PS4 generation – from critically acclaimed PlayStation exclusives like The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima, to blockbuster hits from our third-party partners.

What is the difference between playing PS4 games on the PS5 Digital Edition console, versus the PS5 console with the Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive?

The gaming experience on both models will be the same. However, how you access the content to play will differ:

PS5 Digital Edition

  • You will be able to play digital versions of your compatible PS4 games on the PS5 Digital Edition console. These will be compatible PS4 digital games you have already purchased, or plan to purchase, via PlayStation Store on PS4, PS5, web or PlayStation mobile app.
  • Since there is no disc drive, you won’t be able to play your PS4 disc-based games on the PS5 Digital Edition.

PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive

  • You can play digital versions of your compatible PS4 games you downloaded from PlayStation Store on PS4, PS5, web or PlayStation mobile app.
  • You can also use physical PS4 game discs.

When you sign in to PS5 with your account for PlayStation Network, you will automatically see your library of played PS4 content through the menu.

Be sure to keep the PS5 console updated to the latest system software update available, and apply all available game patches to the game.

What is the PS4 game experience like on PS5?

PS4 titles get even better on PS5. Select PS4 titles will see increased loading speeds on the PS5 console, and will also leverage Game Boost, offering improved or more stable frame rates. Some titles with unlocked frame rates or dynamic resolution up to 4K may see higher fidelity. Additionally, PS4 games will also take advantage of some of PS5’s new UX features, but more to come on that later.

Are games from PlayStation VR backward compatible?

Yes, PlayStation VR games are included among the thousands of PS4 games that are playable on PS5. Playing PS VR games on a PS5 console requires a PS VR headset, PlayStation Camera for PS4* and a PlayStation Camera adaptor (no purchase required. Visit playstation.com/camera-adaptor for details). For the best PS VR experience on PS5 we recommend using a DualShock 4 wireless controller. Selected games may require PS Move motion controllers or be compatible with the PS VR aim controller. The new HD camera for PS5 is not compatible with PS VR. The PS VR headset, PS Camera, DualShock 4 wireless controller, PS Move controllers and PS VR aim controller are all sold separately from PS5.

What about PS4 games on PS Now and PS Plus?

Backward compatible PS4 games included in PS Plus or PS Now will run on PS5.

Can I stream PS4 games on PS5?

Yes, Remote Play from PS4 to PS5 and PS Now streaming are supported. The benefit of streaming is that you can save your storage space on PS5. Please note that PS4 games will not leverage PS5’s Game Boost through streaming.

How do PS4 game transfers and game saves work between the two consoles?

You can transfer digital games, game data, and game saves from a PS4 console to a PS5 console using LAN cables, or by connecting wirelessly (WiFi). If you’ve already stored PS4 games and game data in the external USB storage device connected to your PS4, you can bring them over to PS5 with that external USB storage device. And if you are a PS Plus member, you can also sync PS4 game saves on PS5 through cloud storage.

Please note that the ability to transfer game saves between a PS4 version and a PS5 version of the same game is a developer decision, and will vary title by title for cross-generational games.

For Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, when players decide to upgrade from PS4 to PS5 their game saves will transfer.* Sackboy: A Big Adventure also will support game save transfers from PS4 to PS5 in an update that will be delivered shortly after the release of the game.* We’ll share additional details on both games closer to launch.

How will I know which PS4 games aren’t playable?

Games that are only playable on PS4 will be noted on PlayStation Store as playable on “PS4 only.” We have a list of games that are only playable on PS4, along with additional information on backward compatibility here: playstation.com/ps5-backwards-compatibility

*If players originally purchase a PS4 game disc, the PlayStation 5 with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive is required to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version of the game and transfer their saves over.

    So just making sure when they say 99% of games will be in the ps5 for backwards compatible. Will binding of isaac be available as well? I hope so its a good game.

    All I want to know is if sony will make patches for ps4 first party games for and enhanced ps5 experience….

    I am not talking crazy stuff, new assets, ray tracing, etc.

    I am talking simple 60 fps patches, eventually a little resolution boost.

    Both ps4 and ps5 are x86, so I imagine these patches would cost very little to produce, and would be very consumer friendly…

    If Lance Mcdonald has managed to make bloodborne run at near perfect 60fps on the ps4 pro without any source code, I’m sure sony could do it!

    You guys really need to look into making the PS5 camera compatible with the PSVR… its such a missed opportunity. Tracking would be so much better.

    got a question about transfer from ps4 to ps5 as i will be selling my ps4 on the day is there any way to backup transfer some games to a external hdd so i can transfer them to the ps5 when i get it?
    if there is will there be a option for this in a system update by the end of oct or erly nov with the transfer software?
    also just a little confused about controller BC will dual sense work with ps4 games on the ps5?

    Excellent work Sony, this is exactly what I wanted to hear. I’m glad that Sony are taking backwards compatibility seriously again on PS5. Insisting that people keep old consoles around forever to maintain compatibility with older games is an outdated approach, and I’m glad both Sony and Microsoft are leaving it behind on their next-gen consoles. I don’t want ten different consoles in my living room and old consoles also don’t last forever.

    But this made me pause:

    If I have the disc for The Last of Us 2 for PS4 do I have to insert the data install disc first to be able to play it on PS5? I bought a PS4 copy of it but I’ve never played it. I play to play it for the first time on PS5. Please help.

    So in other words if we buy a PS4 game on the PS5 store & it happens to not work correctly you won’t give us a refund? Glad to see the anti consumer Sony is still alive and well.

    When will you announce the size and vendor options for an additional SSD that fits in the auxiliary SSD drive slot on the ps5? Also, will a compatible SSD in the auxiliary slot run games at full capacity like the one that is already in the system? There were rumors going around that only the stock SSD will be able to perform enhanced gameplay and an auxiliary SSD in the designated slot or an external drive would only be used for storage. I have alot of games that I will be transferring over to my ps5 when it arrives that I want to play with their enhanced graphics on my new 4k uhd TV since my current ps4 is the original one that does not have 4k capability. I’d also like to see the enhanced loading speeds.

    All sounds cool, nice 1 SONY ;) I have a few big AAA PS4 games still to play so I will play them on the PS5 when i get it next month then :P I still wish tho the PS5 could of played every PlayStation disc from the PS1/2&3 :( That would of been the BEST THING EVER:P Oh well.

      Sharing physical-disc based PS4 games to your friend is possible, as long as you are using the same Region code, e.g. NTSC formatted games, PAL formatted games.

      No backwards compatibility for PS1-PS3 games on the PS5, unless you downloaded the Remastered versions of those games on the PS4 or the digital versions of PS2 games on the PS4, and from the PS5 menu you can redownload the digital version of the PS2 games into the PS5. Still need Sony to clarify this though!!

      They said that most of the games will receive 4K resolution upscaling with stable fps and that depends in the developers side. Based on that, I wonder if certain PS4 games ready for the PS5 will be boosted with higher fidelity graphic assets w/ Ray Tracing as an option. Devs need to answer this!

    Surely there will be PSVR native PS5 games, so for these games do we will need the ps4 camera + adapter? or these games will work with the PS5 camera??

    What about the ps camera adapter? how are you going to deliver it to all the psvr users??

    many doubts about psvr compatibility…

      There will inevitably be a PSVR v3 that only works for the PS5. I imagine that one will use the PS5 camera and have higher quality for newer PSVR games. Until then I would expect any PSVR games to come out for the PS4 and be compatible with the PS5. Just a guess, but an educated one.

      I just hope they solve the backwards compatible PSVR issue by then. Would be a pain to have to plugin the PS4 box for PS4 games and then back to the PS5 one for PS5 games.

      Its already going to be a problem for people using HDMI 2.1 TVs as the PSVR breakout box is only HDMI 2.0a (or b, not 100% there).

      If you’re worried about audio lag and want to use an optical out, the best solution i found was getting a TV and sound bar with a sub woofer of the same brands. I got a 4k samsung tv with a samsung sound bar and have no audio lag. When I tried a non samsung bar though, the lag would be bad after 20 minutes of running my ps4.

    Can we please have clarification of how you are going to deal with the PSVR breakout box being a problem for HDMI 2.1 features.

    Not an issue for me initially, but going forward it would be a pain having to unplug it for VRR, 4K 120Hz, etc. Is there an upgraded box on the horizon or do we have to wait for PSVR 2.0?

    I’m also baffled why the PS5 camera can’t be backwards compatible with PSVR.

    What I and I assume many, would like to know is if Remote play is making a return for use on Mobile and PC? Like is the PS4 Remote Play app going to get an update to support PS5 Remote play or is it going to be separate apps? And will it actually support 5ghz Wifi because it REALLY needs to. A less to no lag Remote Play experience would be the best.

    Major question: which M.2 NVME PCie Gen-4 SSD cards will the PlayStation 5 v1 support in day 1?

    I’m may buy the SAMSUNG 980 PRO 1TB just for the internal storage expansion since the 825gb internal SSD storage is really low now a days due to games consuming more than 50gb of storage now.

    Plus, will the PS5 recognize the external HDD storage w/ PS4 games added in to it? Using a Seagate 4TB HDD w/ a library of PS4 games installed. Don’t want any data corruption hehe!

    What is the maximum supported size for External HDD’s on PS5?
    On PS4 it was 8TB.

    And let’s say it’s 8TB, can i hook up 2 of them on the back of the PS5 simultaneously to get 16TB total?

    Bloodborne should now take advantage of PS5. That game was restricted by framerate issues on PS4, which is not ideal for this type of game.

    Hopefully the game game now runs at a full locked 60fps for PS5.
