Upcoming Trophy levelling changes detailed

A quick tour of the enhancements rolling out tonight for Trophies.

You’ve all heard that satisfying sound when a Trophy pops up on the corner of your screen. There’s the sense of accomplishment when that ultra-rare Platinum trophy is unlocked after hours of pursuing. Trophies were first introduced on PlayStation 3, and have been an integral part of the PlayStation gaming experience. Today, we’re excited to announce we’re bringing some enhancements to the Trophy system.

New Trophy Levels

The first thing you’ll notice is the big change to your Trophy level. We’re increasing the Trophy level range from the current “1-100” to “1-999,” so following this update, your Trophy level will automatically be remapped to a new level within this new range based on the Trophies you’ve earned to date. For example, if your current Trophy level is 12, your new level will jump to somewhere in the low 200’s. The exact level will depend on the number and grades of trophies you’ve acquired. There will be no changes to the Trophies already earned or Trophy information, such as unlock requirements.

New Level Calculation Structure

We’ve implemented a new Trophies level calculation system that is more optimized and rewarding. Players will progress quicker through the early levels, and levels will increase more consistently. Platinum trophies will count more toward your level progression, making them even more valuable.

New Trophy Level Icons

With an expanded level range, we’re also updating the trophy level icon on PlayStation 5, as well as PlayStation App at a later date. Currently the Trophies icon is just a single gold star, but we’re adding a few variants:

  • Bronze: levels 1-299
  • Silver: levels 300 – 599
  • Gold: levels 600 – 998
  • Platinum: level 999

The icons will also have a subtle distinction to visually suggest how close you are to the next level.

Lastly, just for clarity, Trophies that you’ve earned on previous PlayStation systems will come with you to PlayStation 5, just as they have in previous generation transitions. The new Trophy levels will be reflected in all locations that Trophy levels are shown, including past systems, PS App and My PlayStation.

All of these updates will be automatically implemented on the system side, starting later tonight (North America) / tomorrow (Europe).

We’re committed to offering an even better experience for our fans as we head into the next generation of gaming. We can’t wait for everyone to start racking up trophies in all the amazing upcoming games that are launching on PS4 and PS5!

  • IT’S ABOUT TIME THAT THE PLATINUM TROPHY HAVE MORE VALUE/POWER

  • “Updates come later tonight/tomorrow” means RIGHT NOW according to the PS5 preorder news.

  • I think it would be better if the xp you earn from a trophy was based on its rarity. Some platinums like My Name is Mayo are a joke compared to something like Bloodborne, they should not be equal value. Also another great addition we need is trophy tracking so we can see that we have x/1000 headshots for a trophy.

  • It seems like an unnecesary change but at the same time it gives people incentive to play more as they gain levels quicker. What I would really like to see is a time tracking system for games played.

    • Since it’s already updated. What’s with it’s going from low level to high level and back to low level. Error in the system or it wasn’t meant to be released today? Very curious

  • YES!!!!!!Didn’t know I wanted this till you announced it!😁

  • Selling PSN Account with over 700 Downloadable content (PS3 & PS4 & PS vita)

  • It would be great an option the allow the players to delete some trophies (of games that you’ll never complete).

  • Please let us track individual achievement progress? Really, pretty please?? We would love to have this information exposed to the end user. Thanks for reading, if you do.

  • “system that is more optimized and rewarding”

Did i miss the reward? Cause i am still waiting for a ‘Real! announcement of a reward for lvling up the Account and getting All the platin trophies…

  • We would like to be able to do REGION CHANGE!

  • Sounds good to me. I’m a level 22. Just keep making those great playstation exclusives! By the way I saw PS5 breakdown video. What an impressive machine. Can’t wait for November 12th. I was one of the lucky one’s that was able to order my PS5 disc version directly from Sony. Hopefully more pre orders will be made available so more gamers can get one.

  • Unless they’re finally going to sync automatically like Xbox instead of having to open the Trophies thing, I’m not impressed.

  • This is a band aid on a broken system. As has been identified in other comments, Sony appears to have stopped enforcing any sort of quality control across developers. It’s unclear as to what games qualify for a platinum with the result being a bunch of super simple platinum trophies. This rejig is the equivalent of countries printing more money when they find their currencies tumbling in value. The solution is Sony enforcing a consistent, transparent set of policies with their trophy system.

  • I hope one day we can delete Trophies, cause the OCD is killing me

  • It would be nice to add a function to have multiplayer trophies auto pop if the multiplayer servers are taken offline. Like Motorstorm Pacfic Rift, you took the servers down like 2 years after release and it prevents us to earn the platinum for those games. Its not our fault when companies are cheap and don’t want to pay for server maintenance.

    • It’s always weird how quickly Sony game servers go down…

      I thought PS+ paid for “servers”?? 😂

    • Could not agree more, but it gets so annoying when Sony just plain ignore this. I have raised this issue lots in Sony online Surveys, but they have never even acknowledged it. For trophy hunters and completionists, its really frustrating. Worst of all, most of my multiplayer friends don’t even bother with trophies, their more about the multiplayer gaming experience.

    • Multiplayer trophies are not a right. Stop being so entitled.

  • Please, please, please, Sony, we need a system that measures progress toward a trophy!

  • Nice can’t wait wit to see the new way the trophy system is for the PS5 see you all in November

  • You should be able to use trophy pictures as avatars. And for trophy milestones you should unlock cool avatars and banners and themes to use

  • I am not sure what problem this is solving, but I assume it has to do with people that are already at or near level 100 of the current system.

  • I love this update however, I’m still wanting the ability to remove, PS game trophy achievements from my trophy library that I am unable to 100% or platinum i.e. NBA 2K15. When 2K games shut the servers down and would not give people the opportunity to achieve 100% and platinum anymore you final game percentage isn’t perfect. I feel like this should be a update where we have the ability to remove this stuff. I know a lot of people love seeing perfection in games on their trophy log including myself.

    • Why do Sony continue to ignore this, despite it being raised so many times by gamers?

Its such a simple solution, move multiplayer trophies to a DLC style, and that way a person can always obtain the platinum trophy.

  • What is the new point system? Are you including rarity in some way to finally devalue some publisher’s 99% rarity 5 minute platinum stack spam?

  • I wish that you give some points for trophies so when we collect a certain amount of point we get a voucher code that can be psn currency or add-ons code or whatever that would encourage everyone to hunt for trophies

  • This is great and all, but it doesn’t change anything essential, just how things look. Can we have progress tracking like Xbox and Steam have been offering for years?

  • Is there going to be trophy progress like how much collected / percentage ..I think that would be great

  • This is quite neat update on Trophy system. I’m wondering where my new level will be at. I’m sitting on level 21 on 81% with 41 platinum trophies sitting on.

  • Please tell me the PS5 is powerful enough to sort the trophy list alphabetically. This daunting task proved too much for PS4. Hopefully PS5 has the horsepower to do it!

  • Trophy tracking would be helpful like the competition introduced in 2013. Very useful for the grindy trophies (kill x amount etc)

  • For people complaining about add on trophies, THEY ARE NOT REQUIRED FOR PLATINUM, so there is no reason not to add them, good day

    • There’s plenty of others who go for 100% like myself and my boosting group whenever possible. What really kills it is the money that some of these older DLC costs. Which don’t even go on sale anymore.

  • The BIG question is Sony, have you fixed the whole Multiplayer trophy issue, EG moving them to their own segment like DLC.

Especially where trophies become unobtainable due to ‘servers’ being closed down.

What is the point in having trophies that can no longer be achieved?

I have seen this raised so many times on forums and on the internet by numerous other games, as well as personally raising the issue in various Sony ‘surveys’ and so far nothing has been done, nor is it even acknowledged.

    • Problem is, developers usually include multiplayer trophies for their own benefit.

Trophies work on loads of people to make them do things they otherwise wouldn’t want to do. Making a multiplayer trophy means more people will play multiplayer. More people playing multiplayer can translate into more sales.

So essentially the developers see it as a benefit. They don’t likely care if some person doesn’t get a platinum years later.

  • Would still like to see a public API so we could use trophy images etc. to make our own trophy cards, or put info on our own websites.

  • Hi what is the point of Trophies anyway. You don’t get anything for them like money off vouchers etc🤔🤔

  • yo I have an idea what if you made a purpose like an actual purpose for doing achievements and leveling up and stuff instead of it being just for fun like why don’t you make it so we get different rewards for different games like in uplay from upisoft or like uhhh *cough* *cough* Microsoft.

  • It looks like a meaningless update to me, it’s like the current trophy level system is a supercar that goes 250mph, but the people have been asking for a faster car, so they reveal a ‘brand new’ supercar, it looks different and it goes 402kph, which seems impressive until you realize that it’s the same exact speed as before and no improvements have actually been made.

Also that whole “There’s the sense of accomplishment” thing mentioned above that reeks of the same fluff that EA made about Star Wars Battlefront 2 about a sense of Pride and Accomplishment, which is still the most downvoted comment in Reddit history, is it too hard to expand the current trophy level system to lvl 999, so that the players who have long since reached lvl 100 can earn levels again. I want to see people challenge Hakoom to the new top level, instead of a pointless conversion from 100 to 999, which means nothing.

    • pointless indeed. I’m nowhere near 100. But i know i would really want to keep leveling up if i was. But this solves nothing in that point.

  • This sounds really cool. On a related topic, I’d love an update to the trophy sound so that you get a different sound between bronze, silver, gold and most importantly platinum trophies.

  • Can you please not allow companies to make trophy stacks. Regardless of the region released they should all share the same list.

  • Things I want :

    1) make game devs accountable for fixing their trophy lists – Dragon Fin Soup can not be platinumed solely because of glitchy trophies.
    2) Allows us to delete games entirely from our trophy list just not the games at 0% progress, even if it’s only a one time offer.
    3) Make harder games worth more points. A Powgi or Ratalika game currently holds the same weight as say Dark Souls or something that is much harder than say My Name is Mayo
    4) Make multiplayer trophies separate. This really turns me off from even playing a game unless I know I will be enjoying the game enough to actually put in the time to play the multiplayer. The fear of a games’ servers going down is the only reason I would hop on to get the MP trophies in the first place.
    5) Sony needs their own leaderboard for tracking trophy stats. I’m currently a member of three if not four trophy tracking sites that all have slightly different information on how they track data, but I’d love Sony to have their own site.

  • I was wondering if or when they wud do this, sounds great and all but I never thought they’d increase our level, sounds a bit worthless

    • That’s because it is. Just to get people to feel good, artificially everytime they level up since it’ll be happening more often than the 1-100 leveling

  • Maybe let me delete my trophies please! That would be wonderful

  • thats cool … now if only we can have playtime tracking on our system too , nintendo and steam have been doing it for a long time and if you’ve done the year round-up stuff for your psn you know that a counter exists somewhere

  • One of the things I was disappointed that never came to fruition was the PlayStation Home concept of displaying these large collectible and displayed trophies in everyone’s home. Now I appreciate there’s nothing like this anymore as a base, but it’d be cool to have every developer design 3 unique trophies that players can show off in their collection, rotate, interact etc.

So say for Crash 4, perhaps you get a Aku Aku Crystal/platinum shiny mask to display in your trophy cabinet or like in Yakuza they like to do Characters as statuettes in full gold colour, Ghost of Tsushima could have a figure of Jin with a wind circling him. maybe some developers will be creative and create a interactable figurine that says quotes.

This would help inspire the fun of collecting trophies again

  • I just want a PSN where I can download games from with full of my network bandwidth (1000Mbps).

  • I want a Hall of Fame for platinum trophies.
I want a place where all the platinum trophies would be, sorted by rarity.
Also, the top three platinum trophies with the game icon.

    For example:

    1. Skyrim 3.1%
    2. Far Cry® Primal 4.3%
    3. Assassin’s Creed® Odyssey 5.0%

  • How about adding any sort of reward rather than a useless number? Or do you have to wait for Xbox to add a feature before you become innovative?

  • We deserve to get a £30 voucher at least or like a free game for every 100 badges or platinum badge

    • They had that for a short while. You got Sony Reward points for every 100 Silver, 25 Gold and 10 Platinum trophies you obtain. Which then you can trade for PSN credit But i think people would farm plats and it just ruined the whole thing.

  • Um yeah when is this coming out

  • This seems kinda pointless. I would have preferred a change to how you track a trophy. Say you get a trophy for X amount of kills, and the trophy helps you with having a counter. I’m pretty sure they have those stats on the X-Box. Also like others have said. they should give you the option to delete a trophy list, ones with server closures etc.

  • Im level 100+ like 500 other players maybe a 1000. I got 700 platinums what must i ecpect max level again not happy with that
