PlayStation 5: Answering your questions on compatible PS4 peripherals & accessories

Information on DualShock 4, PS VR, officially licensed peripherals, and more.

In our June Future of Gaming digital event, we announced an array of PlayStation 5 peripherals and accessories that will be launching this holiday season. But we know that many of you were also wondering if and how existing PlayStation 4 peripherals are compatible with the next-gen system. Today, we’re happy to share a brief FAQ that will answer some of your questions.

If you have questions that aren’t addressed, feel free to leave them in the comments below.

Which existing PS4 peripherals/accessories will work on PS5?

  • Specialty peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games.
  • The Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as third-party headsets that connect via USB port or audio jack, will work on PS5 (the headset companion app is not compatible with PS5).
  • The DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PS4 games.
  • Both the PS Move Motion Controllers and the PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work with supported PS VR games on PS5.

Please note, not all PlayStation officially licensed or third-party peripherals/accessories may work on PS5. We recommend checking with the manufacturer to confirm whether a product will work on PS5 and specific titles.

Will DualShock 4 work with PS5 games?

No, we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller.

Is the PlayStation Camera for PS4 compatible with PS5?

Yes, PlayStation Camera for PS4 will work with PS5 for playing supported PS VR games. It will require a PlayStation Camera adaptor that will be provided at no additional cost to PS VR users. More details on how to get the adaptor will be announced at a later date. Playing supported PS VR games on PS5 will also require a DualShock 4 wireless controller or PlayStation Move controller, depending on the game.

And that’s it! We’ll continue to provide updates on PlayStation 5 down the road, so make sure to check back soon.

  • Could someone please FINALLY confirm, if Nacon peripherals are compatible to the PS5 !?

Just got the Nacon Revolution Unlimited.

    Thanks, or not, for replying.

    • It will only work with PS4 titles not newer PS5 titles. Sony with their infinite wisdom decided it would be in our best interest to force us to ‘experience the wonders of the duelsense 5’. Very bad form Sony. Let the consumer decided instead of software locking access to PS5 titles with older controllers. There are no physical or compatibility issues except Sony made the deliberate choice to do this to sell more new controllers.

    • It’s pretty obvious from the FAQ that they will only work on PS4 titles and not new PS5 titles

    • Never have the controllers on a previous PlayStation console worked with the next one. Not sure why it is such a surprise and big deal to you now over 2 decades after the PS2 came lol.

    • @thefonze_ Literally came here to say the same as @andrewsqual.

It has been this way for every console ever made, NES controllers could not be used on SNES, master system controllers couldn’t be used on Megadrive, XBox controllers couldn’t be used on XBox 360, likewise with PS1 on PS2 on PS3.

Why on earth you so surprised by this is amazing. Perhaps you’re really young and the PS4 was your first console?

  • Will I need to keep opening my PS5 controller every six months to replace trigger membranes? :)

  • Is the PS5 Camera the same as the PS4 camera, aside from the aesthetics, or does if have any differences between the 2?

    • I think it is slightly different in input/output as the PS5 is more powerful.
But, there is a PS4 camera jack apparently coming and the PS5 camera works with PSVR. so not all bad.

  • Let’s say that I have a backup of my PS4 (on a USB drive), will I be able to import it on PS5 (the saves especially)?

    • If it is third party, contact the manufacturer, they’ll know already if the product is able to work with PS5.

    • Maybe the PS5 will come with a feature that will scan a PS4 connected together with it via ethernet cable and will ask what games, apps, save games, captures, you want to transfer over. Obviously only things that will run on PS5 will probably be transferable.

Or maybe they will do nothing lol.

  • Out of curiosity no connection points have been shown as yet for the ps5 … is there an optical out option on the system?

  • Will the ps5 controller work with psvr?

    • PS5 has full PSVR connectivity, so, I’d suggest yes.

Some of the PSVR games may even support the DS4. If it is a game on the BC list that requires it.

  • Will backwards compatible be available without a disc

  • will Playstation Pulse Elite Headset supported? and is there optical audio out on the system?

  • How about the Astro C40 controller?

  • Awesome about the gold wireless headset👍🏾 how about the charging station for the controllers? Is the PS4 one compatible with the PS5 controllers?

    • I’s say no to the charging stations. the Dualsense is a different shape and design. They’ll probably sell a new version.

  • What about licensed third party controllers like the Razer Raiju Tournament Edition 2019, Nacon Revolution etc? Will they work with PS5 Games?

  • What about scuf controllers? I can’t use it with the new Call of Duty on PS5??? Really?????

  • Not bad I won’t have to buy new headphones for ps5.

  • Not even a big deal to me. DualSense looks superior in every way except for maybe color scheme lol. I’m not losing sleep over not being able to use an old/inferior controller that doesn’t have the new features.

    • Many people have older superior controllers for multiplayer titles e.g. scuff and Astro C40 etc.
      Greedy decision by Sony

  • Will the PS5 allow gameplay from all the previous consoles if not all games most of them?

  • So based on the article and the comments, the back-button attachment for the PS4 controller & the PS4 / DS4 controller will work on the PS5, but only for PS4 games? I bet Sony will have to allow usage of the DS4 on PS5 games because of the investment in all those DS4 controllers. Of course I know my last statement is pure conjecture, but why restrict all those controllers? It’s not like they’re using outdated technology or button-input will be changing anytime soon.

  • Will we still need to use the usb dongle with the platinum headset? Or is that receiver built in on the PS5?

  • Dear PlayStation Team,

I have a few questions, regarding the Steering Wheels, since the COVID-19 I really really want to get a PS4 licensed wheel, so it would be very welcome if you could answer these:

    – Are your partners well informed already, so they can release their support information soon?
    – What does that particularly mean? Assuming a Logitech / Thrustmaster / Fanatec wheel base, do you suggest that it will require an additional cost / effort that manufacturers have to put in in order to make it work, like updated wheel firmware or additional licensing cost?
    – Were there any changes in PS5 licensed peripherals system design that my actually have had an impact on the steering wheels? I’m not asking you to go into details necessarily, although it would be very welcome.
    – For titles like Assetto Corsa Competizione / GT Sport that were released for PS4, assuming that games will be backwards compatible, do you expect the peripherals to run just fine without any game / wheel firmware updates?

Just for context, there are people who spent like €600-€2000 on systems like Fanatec CSL Elite, or Podium – if any problems occur, with that much investment, up to 4x the price of PS5, it would be very bad if they were left on ice.

    Best Regards,
    Kosiek.

    • Good point; I’d love to purchase a Fanatec CSL wheel but only it it’ll be supported on PS5.

    • the main downfall of consoles – your hardware is at the mercy of a few lines of code they can easily pump out to make it useless

  • But what about the games that you bought in the ps store

  • I’m just glad my new Astro A50’s and the 20 DualShock 4’s I own will work on day one. I’m beyond hyped for PS5…bruh!

    • just not with any ps5 games

    • DS4’s will only work with selected PS4 BC games.

    • You are misinformed. Your A50’s won’t work as intended as there is no optical port. Essentially your Astro has two internal sound devices, one attaches via Optical cable which is used for all your game sounds and one attaches via USB which is used for your chat audio. The USB device will work but is inferior in sound quality to the optical device which will not work. Also the party /game sound mixer function will not work anymore.

  • Got an old (PS4) Sony PlayStation Wireless Stereo Headset 2.0, not mentioned in the blog, only the silver / gold headsets. Uses a usb wireless dongle. Not being able to use the companion app is a shame, some of the game specific profiles have been great. However if the 3d sound feature from the PS5 works then it shouldn’t be a problem.

  • Any word on whether toys to life games will work and their peripherals? (Skylanders, LEGO Dimensions, Disney Infinity & Starlink)

I would really love to know because those are the only PS4 games I was hoping to plat with backwards compatibility…

  • Great, so all Fanatec (and Thrustmaster and Logitech) wheels will work on PS5. That’s good news.

  • Will our VR work with the new PS5 camera? Whats the difference between the two camera?

  • Does the PS5 support Digital Audio OutPut. Just that I have a headset which uses that port.

  • Is the PSVR supported on the PS5? That is not specifically stated, just the move controllers and camera.

    • They’ve already previously stated the PSVR works on PS5. They want to continue producing games for it.

  • Will the razer raiju ultimate be made compatible with the ps5

  • The only obvious question that needs clarification is…

If I get a game the has Dual Entitlement like FIFA, Madden etc…does the transition/migration affect the controllers after the switch?

  • Can we get information about transferring from PS4 to PS5?

  • Could you tell us please if the USB sockets, camera socket be flush or will they be recessed like the Pro, sometimes you have to use an USB extender because you can’t get the flash drive to sit in the recess, regards twlch63.

  • Then I hope this mean my PS4 arcade stick will function on PS5 as well.

  • Any info on whether there will be an optical audio port on the ps5?

  • “No, we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities”

This is bs for so many reasons. First, I’m assuming then that PS5 will not allow ANY third party controllers, then. Even Nintendo allows them lol.

Secondly, the exclusive DS4 features were hardly ever used – maybe by a few first party games, but that’s it. They’re implying that there will be all these games taking advantage. Just…no. Nice try.

Lies to make more money. No excuse when even Nintendo allows it lmao.

  • Please let us know, will there be a back button attachment of some sort?
This was the best feature this year for the ps4 that made me a better player..

  • What about Steel Series Arctic Pro Wireless headphones?

  • Good Morning Sony!
Firstly I want to thank you for all you are doing and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for us with our stay with the new PS5, My question is and which I know maybe a bit early but would you be able to say if Gameshare will still be there on the PS5 because It was the reason I got my brother a Console for his birthday so we can play together! Any information will be appreciated .

    • I’s say so, Family accounts are staying on Xbox, so I see no reason for the Sony to do away with them on PSN for the PS5.

  • No great surprises about the controllers. Dualsense functionality has been designed for next gen stuff, so never expected DS4 to do anything other than backwards compatibility. Given the size of the SSD,likely will be sticking to playing most of my ps4 stuff via external HDD…Wonder how the categories/games will be displayed on the ps5 PSN store? A lot of ps4 stuff, but guessing they’ll need some sort of mark/post to mention they’ll work via backwards compatibility on ps5 regarding the older titles?

  • Ok, what about people who have their ps4 games on an external hdd? Most of my ps4 library is on one, and I have limited internet. Can I plug in my hdd and it work?

    • @fakieflip180 Back at Mark Cerny’s PS5 GDC reveal,he did confirm you can play ps4 games via external HDD. (Discs work too). PS Blog did refer to the older back catalog requiring testing by Sony atm though. And you’ll need to be signed into your PSN account obviously.

    • Contact the manufacturer, they all know if there products will work on PS5 or not.

  • Will the DS5 work on PS4 games played on the PS5?

And will the DS5 work on PS4?

  • Will third party wireless headsets such as steelseries Arctis 7 support 7.1 and 3D audio on PS5? On PS4 it’s stereo only.

  • Will ps5 controller work on PS4 games?

    • Yes, it works on PS5’s BC compatibility, but for some games (not all) the DS4 can be used on those BC games via PS5, apparently.

  • Will extended storage devices work on the ps5?

  • BS4 won’t work only with PS5 exclusive on with any PS5 games?
for example new COD will be on both platforms, on PS4 and PS5 cross-gen. Will my DS work in this game?

    • Are you asking if the Dualshock 4 will work on PS5? The answer is no.

If you have a PS5 copy of CoD then a Dualsense will have to be used.

  • What means “official licensed” peripherals? Does it mean Gran Turismo as to be on the Box so online Trustmaster wheels will work?
Planing to buy a Fanatec Elite wheel…

  • هل تستطيع لعب fortnite علي playstation 4 ازا نزل playstation 5

  • Will the console have an optical audio port? That’s the PS4 accessory I’m interested in knowing compatibility for. Mainly I would like to know if my Astro A50 will work on the PS5.

  • game fortnait playstation 4 or playstation5

  • Hopefully we actually get some further details about backwards compatibility in general on ps5 before too long too. As a recent example with Overcooked remastered, Team 17 wouldn’t answer if the ps4 games would even work on ps5! Own a fair few indies & been a few months since the GDC posts on the blog. Time for an update.

  • هل سيعمل بلايستيشن 4 بعد نزول بلايستيشن 5

  • Seems a bit obvious, but still unconfirmed. Will I be able to play PS4 games with my DualSense controller on PS5? Will the DualSense work with the PS4 if I try to connect it?

What connector will the new PS5 HD camera use if it’s not the same as the PS4 camera?

What are the ports on the back of the PS5?

Will I need to re-format my external hard drive to use it as extended storage for PS5? It’s currently formatted as extended storage for my PS4 Pro. I would be disappointed if I had to erase all those game downloads and re-download all of them just to use my external hard drive with PS5.

There are lots of unanswered questions about peripheral support for PS5 and PS4. Sony you need to share more information.

    • PS4’s BC games on PS5 will be able to be played with an Dualsense, but for obvious reasons none of the upgrades on the controller will work.

I think that you won’t need to reformat the external HDD, it’d be a pisstake to make people redownload everything. The idea is to make it easier.
