Introducing DualSense, the New Wireless Game Controller for PlayStation 5

See the first images of DualSense, which will bring the sense of touch to PS5 gameplay.

We’ve reached an exciting milestone with PlayStation 5, as we’re starting to ship our new controller in its final design to developers who are implementing its unique features into their games. But first, we wanted everyone in the PlayStation community to get a first look at the DualSense™ wireless controller, and hear our vision for how the new controller will captivate more of your senses as you interact with the virtual worlds in PS5 games. The features of DualSense, along with PS5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, will deliver a new feeling of immersion to players.

When PS4 launched in 2013, the DualShock 4 wireless controller garnered a lot of positive feedback from gamers and developers for being the best PlayStation controller yet, and for introducing forward-looking features like the Share button. This brought us to the next question – how do we build upon that success?

After thoughtful consideration, we decided to keep much of what gamers love about DualShock 4 intact, while also adding new functionality and refining the design. Based on our discussions with developers, we concluded that the sense of touch within gameplay, much like audio, hasn’t been a big focus for many games. We had a great opportunity with PS5 to innovate by offering game creators the ability to explore how they can heighten that feeling of immersion through our new controller. This is why we adopted haptic feedback, which adds a variety of powerful sensations you’ll feel when you play, such as the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud. We also incorporated adaptive triggers into the L2 and R2 buttons of DualSense so you can truly feel the tension of your actions, like when drawing a bow to shoot an arrow.

This provided us with an exciting challenge to design a new controller that builds off of the current generation, while taking into account the new features we were adding. For example, with adaptive triggers, we had to consider how the components would fit into the hardware, without giving it a bulky feeling. Our design team worked closely with our hardware engineers to place the triggers and actuators. The designers were then able to draw the lines of how the exterior of the controller would look and feel, with a challenge of making the controller feel smaller than it really looks. In the end, we changed the angle of the hand triggers and also made some subtle updates to the grip. We also took thoughtful consideration into ways to maintain a strong battery life for DualSense’s rechargeable battery, and to lessen the weight of the controller as much as possible as new features were added.

For the buttons, you’ll notice there is no longer a “Share” button as we had with DualShock 4. Don’t worry – it’s not going away. In fact, we’ve built upon the success of our industry-first Share button to bring you a new “Create” button feature. With Create, we’re once again pioneering new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world, or just to enjoy for themselves. We’ll have more details on this feature as we get closer to launch.

DualSense also adds a built-in microphone array, which will enable players to easily chat with friends without a headset – ideal for jumping into a quick conversation. But of course, if you are planning to chat for a longer period, it’s good to have that headset handy.

Now, let’s talk about the colors. Traditionally our base controllers have a single color. As you can see, we went a different direction this time around, and decided on a two-toned design. Additionally, we changed the position of the light bar that will give it an extra pop. On DualShock 4, it sat on the top of the controller; now it sits at each side of the touch pad, giving it a slightly larger look and feel.

In all, we went through several concepts and hundreds of mockups over the last few years before we settled on this final design. DualSense has been tested by a wide range of gamers with a variety of hand sizes, in order for us to achieve the comfort level we wanted, with great ergonomics. Our goal with DualSense is to give gamers the feeling of being transported into the game world as soon as they open the box. We want gamers to feel like the controller is an extension of themselves when they’re playing – so much so that they forget that it’s even in their hands!

We are thrilled about sharing the final look of the DualSense controller with our fans, and we can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it! I’d like to close with a message from SIE President & CEO Jim Ryan to the community:

“DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5. The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games – continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future. To the PlayStation community, I truly want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward PS5’s launch in Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more information about PS5, including the console design, in the coming months.”

  • Although I’m not a huge fan of this design, the one thing I really do not get is why Sony would not add back buttons? The add-ons for dualshock 4 sold out in the blink of an eye. Obviously there are gamers that want them. I can not explain the disappointment I had when I first saw this design. I feel like this is playing right into third part controllers hands. I know it will be the first thing I buy IF I go back to Sony.

  • Superb. Just love it. I want a matching PS5. ❤️

  • i know this said don’t be a jerk but c’mon i’ve read the comments and no one said that this looks like a XBOX controller sony why are you copy mirosoft let tell you before its to late come up with your own controller look i’m not mad but alot of people are going to hate this look and i know you and microsoft are in the better consel war but when mircosoft see’s this now look i’m not saying you are but scared of them but microsoft is going to think your afraid of them don’t let them think that . now look sony i came up with a motto let you it
When you are trying to be the best you can don’t copy other people to get because people are still not going to know you so be you own UNIQUE person”

  • Excellent Design but you need the Thumb sticks UP Higher and each pushed left and right further in the correct position of your thumb tendons to move quick and a slight repositioning at a V angle or just make this exact design in XBOX 360 thumb stick except the left one needs to be position right more

  • MOVE THUMB STICKS! HIGHER! V Move Thumb Sticks HIGHER! everything else is perfect

  • Wow! This is the DOPEST looking controller I’ve ever seen! Guaranteed that the console looks equally fantastic! NOW I am HYPED!!! Also, disappointed to hear so much criticism already. Just be stoked and save the complaints for serious problems in life!

  • Nothing to do about controlers. I’m a gamer using PlayStation 1 & 2.
HELP! Hoping someone here may know the answer. I have looked and asked for help from all kinds of forums.
When playing PS3 games, using headset. The game play and team player sounds are independent. Meaning I can indenpendly controll their volume.
When using PS4 games. The volume for both game play and team player are the same. Both controlled by one switch on the headset. Not independly controlled by the two volume switches on the head set.
Must be a setting in settings in PS4 that will enable the volume for game play and team player settings to increase or decrease independly. Send response please

  • The new controller looks like Xbox. Please don’t be a copy of Xbox.
    Not good for holding!
The new controller is very fat, not good for gamers, please keep it the same, make only a small change.
    Thanks

  • I have a love hate relationship with the controller at the moment. Am I the only one who thinks it kinda resembles an xbox one controller shape wise?

  • The nerd rage is real on here.

  • Ive bought every ps sony has ever released and they all r really good but the only annoying thing is that they dont support bluetooth audio so please please add it to ps5 and ill be the first guy to buy it

  • Hopefully there will be a way to turn off these features unlike the current controller. Having the light “pop” more is the opposite of what I want. The light and rumble features take me out of the game, not immerse me more.

  • That’s going to be great

  • The first thing I noticed is a lack of the traditional tracking light bar for the PlayStation Camera and by extension the PlayStation VR, which makes me wonder how they will be able to support VR on the PS5.

  • Will the ps4 back button attachment work the Dualsense controller

  • For*

  • Yeah Can you add a headset with the playstation Five

  • I think that the mechanics of the controller are great, but the design doesn’t sit with me too well. I think the classic all black design would’ve fit much better.

  • PS4 controller shape is better and white and black is ugly.

  • The new features sounds great but the appearance seems a bit like they’re partnering with Xbox, it’s not impressive with just an image .But the new is impressive ,can’t wait to get a feel of this control it might just change the way I feel about them just saying

  • Love the sleek design, can’t wait to literally get my hands on a PS5 controller!

  • Why it was necessary to increase the size of the controller? The controller could be smaller. Children’s hands are smaller than the hands of an adult, so there a lot of children who playing ps4 and it is very important detail i mean the size of the controller. The design of the new sample looks more rustic than dualshock 4, it is fact. Before it’s too late, please reduce the size of the controller and make the design more modern. I realy disapointed cause dualshock 4 looks even better than the new version. On the contrary, it should be better.

  • Sony, will It be a better punishment for you if I buy an Xbox after dualsense release? Just listen the critique. Read carefully the comments of your customers and just act according to wishes of your fans. Or, microsoft will crush you. Do not lose your unique personality that we like so much and that we appreciated all this time. Just reduce the size and change the design, which will be aimed at Sony not at microsoft.

  • Hey when will we get to see the first images of the console

  • Hey when will we get to see the first images of the PS5 console ?

  • I think the controller looks fab, nothing wrong with the placement of the led light either. I believe the console will also be in black and white. I really hope the design of the console does not look anything like a PC tower i.e. Xbox.

  • AMAZING but how much will the console be. I am a fan of PS4! KEEP IT UP!

  • I love the features, but it looks too much like a XBox One controller. I always preferred the feel of the Dualshocks

  • Does anyone Know when the ps5 comes out

  • Question Will there be a fully customizable controller where you can have any color combinations or will they be set colors like what we have currently. Would really enjoy the fully customizable colors, joystick grips and controller grips.

  • I have yet to see anyone speak on the mute button that was added below the PS button. Will this be solely to mute the built in controller microphone or could it be used in a wider variety of ways. Could this be adapted to be used as a Push-to-Talk button with Wired headsets?

  • Is it just me or are you guys also getting Xbox controller vibes too?! But, it looks great it will be a great look for a new decade for sure. PS5 will be awesome won’t buy it until I have enough money of course. #PS5 #DualSense.

  • But can we please log in with our ps4 account into the ps5 account lol, because don’t want to restart all over again and lose my data.

    • Its not the ps4 account its a psn account (PlayStation network account) which means that we are able to in other words :)

  • Ps5 reveal plz @playstation

  • I love the work and engineering. I don’t believe the built in mic is a good feature. It seems that the mic will be more detrimental then anything. The touchpad is great and all, but again, just like the PS4; not necessarily a good feature. Unfortunately, their is just not enough software making use of the hardware.

  • PRIVACY ALERT! You SHALL NOT include a privacy invading microphone in the controller or console. I do not want microphones of any kind in my house. That exposes us to hackers and governments. That’s the first thing I’ll be doing surgery on to physically disable. It’s the same reason I’ll NEVER have any Smart Home device in my house. Non-mic’d security cameras on the outside, yes, but never microphones on the inside. It’s already bad enough we have those on our phones. I don’t need another attack vector to beware of.

Make the console pretty instead. I wouldn’t mind the console being dual toned, hopefully with some gloss, but controllers NEVER stay white! I also like the idea of the touchpad but VERY few developers actually put it to use; unfortunately.

  • So I just bought a DualShock Rose Gold controller and love it. I don’t want to give it up. Will the PS4 controller work with PS5? And I don’t really like the color the PS5 controller, can you come out with other colors off the bat?

  • Hopefully we all are waiting for the PlayStation 5 and Sony made a controller it is good apporchunite for Sony

  • Please please incorporate your PS Back Button Attachment into this new controller. It gives hope to those with disabilities.

  • Looks great. Love the built in mic and the colors

  • @DocKlenk your obviously an xbox player so go leave the Playstation blog and make sure you can afford AA batteries to shove into your bulky Xbox controller your points are invalid and the majority of the Playstation community likes the new DS5 so stop hating your mad its not coming out on your big box you call a console.

  • Finally am able to sign in here again…am late but oh well.Very nice tech but that’s all…ugly controller, dunno what y’all are trying to achieve by making the PS5 controller similar to the disgrace that is the xb*x controller, catering to them xbots no doubt cuz you definitely aren’t thinking about your loyal PS playas. Why didn’t y’all stuck to the DS4 design?…disappointed to say the least, guess gotta be grateful that the d-pad ain’t on the place of the left stick.Sad to see Sony going downhill like this…1st send our games to pc and now this bs controller that looks like a damn xb*x controller, what a disgrace.

  • Love the design, I hope the analog sticks are better on this one compared to the previous & current gen controllers

  • I’m literally looking at a copy of the XBox X Controller, heck the X controller was even better because they kept the colors for the buttons. Very disappointed that they curved the edges, when I first saw this, I was like, “Isn’t that the new X Box controller?

Still happy that it’s recharge or tho

  • At first I thought the buttons were flat and iv just noticed they do stick up there just clear looks cool

  • I think myself and everyone in at the sim racing world would like to know if our racing wheels and pedals we have now for ps4 will work on ps5? Or is it not going to be compatible as far as that goes

  • XBox 1? is that you?

  • Looks sick, can’t wait for the ps5, weird to say ps5

  • I play on ps4 will I still be able to have my ps4 account on the ps5
