Introducing DualSense, the New Wireless Game Controller for PlayStation 5

See the first images of DualSense, which will bring the sense of touch to PS5 gameplay.

We’ve reached an exciting milestone with PlayStation 5, as we’re starting to ship our new controller in its final design to developers who are implementing its unique features into their games. But first, we wanted everyone in the PlayStation community to get a first look at the DualSense™ wireless controller, and hear our vision for how the new controller will captivate more of your senses as you interact with the virtual worlds in PS5 games. The features of DualSense, along with PS5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, will deliver a new feeling of immersion to players.

When PS4 launched in 2013, the DualShock 4 wireless controller garnered a lot of positive feedback from gamers and developers for being the best PlayStation controller yet, and for introducing forward-looking features like the Share button. This brought us to the next question – how do we build upon that success?

After thoughtful consideration, we decided to keep much of what gamers love about DualShock 4 intact, while also adding new functionality and refining the design. Based on our discussions with developers, we concluded that the sense of touch within gameplay, much like audio, hasn’t been a big focus for many games. We had a great opportunity with PS5 to innovate by offering game creators the ability to explore how they can heighten that feeling of immersion through our new controller. This is why we adopted haptic feedback, which adds a variety of powerful sensations you’ll feel when you play, such as the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud. We also incorporated adaptive triggers into the L2 and R2 buttons of DualSense so you can truly feel the tension of your actions, like when drawing a bow to shoot an arrow.

This provided us with an exciting challenge to design a new controller that builds off of the current generation, while taking into account the new features we were adding. For example, with adaptive triggers, we had to consider how the components would fit into the hardware, without giving it a bulky feeling. Our design team worked closely with our hardware engineers to place the triggers and actuators. The designers were then able to draw the lines of how the exterior of the controller would look and feel, with a challenge of making the controller feel smaller than it really looks. In the end, we changed the angle of the hand triggers and also made some subtle updates to the grip. We also took thoughtful consideration into ways to maintain a strong battery life for DualSense’s rechargeable battery, and to lessen the weight of the controller as much as possible as new features were added.

For the buttons, you’ll notice there is no longer a “Share” button as we had with DualShock 4. Don’t worry – it’s not going away. In fact, we’ve built upon the success of our industry-first Share button to bring you a new “Create” button feature. With Create, we’re once again pioneering new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world, or just to enjoy for themselves. We’ll have more details on this feature as we get closer to launch.

DualSense also adds a built-in microphone array, which will enable players to easily chat with friends without a headset – ideal for jumping into a quick conversation. But of course, if you are planning to chat for a longer period, it’s good to have that headset handy.

Now, let’s talk about the colors. Traditionally our base controllers have a single color. As you can see, we went a different direction this time around, and decided on a two-toned design. Additionally, we changed the position of the light bar that will give it an extra pop. On DualShock 4, it sat on the top of the controller; now it sits at each side of the touch pad, giving it a slightly larger look and feel.

In all, we went through several concepts and hundreds of mockups over the last few years before we settled on this final design. DualSense has been tested by a wide range of gamers with a variety of hand sizes, in order for us to achieve the comfort level we wanted, with great ergonomics. Our goal with DualSense is to give gamers the feeling of being transported into the game world as soon as they open the box. We want gamers to feel like the controller is an extension of themselves when they’re playing – so much so that they forget that it’s even in their hands!

We are thrilled about sharing the final look of the DualSense controller with our fans, and we can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it! I’d like to close with a message from SIE President & CEO Jim Ryan to the community:

“DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5. The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games – continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future. To the PlayStation community, I truly want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward PS5’s launch in Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more information about PS5, including the console design, in the coming months.”

  • Very happy about the haptic feedback, built in controller mic, and USB C port.

Not thrilled with the color scheme, and I’m usually a white/black contrast lover, but this just looks awkward. I’m all for two tone but this isn’t a very pleasing finish.

I would prefer customizable backlit buttons/joysticks/triggers for the LED implementation too, not that any of it is necessary or even useful, just higher quality looking, and there should definitely be an option to individually disable any lighting or other battery drainers.

The back of the controller isn’t shown (or I missed it) but I hope there are expanded buttons/triggers/touchpads in the final build too.

  • Sony, are you sure that this is the final version of the design? This design is terrible ….

  • Looks amazing but feels there’s an Xbox influence on this 🤔

  • All in all its cool. But please, make an all black design that you can buy with the Ps5 and not as an extra. When you use those controllers for a long time they will get dirty and all and white is very hard to clean. You’ll see every single flaw on this.

  • Tell me they didn’t remove the Headphone jack, the most useful thing there.

Hi Sony, I’ve never said this before, I am a huge fan for almost 10 years already, love what you do, hope you’ll see this and I don’t mean to hurt you guys.

BUT, this gamepad looks really bad…technically it’s cool, designers should pitch it to Microsoft, I bet they’d love it. But it’s definitely not the Playstation gamepad.
It looks like if Dualshock and xbox gamepad had a baby. And it was albino. Or just like dualshock has eaten xbox gamepad.
    So the main points are:

    1. Way too much like xbox gamepad.
    2. Hoooow did you came up with the idea, that WHITE gamepad would be good for PLAYSTATION fans??? Seriously, is there a single reason? Just make it black.

Guys, please change it while you still have time.
Just stick with the Dualsense, dualschock 4, it’s the gratest gamepad of all times.
Because when I buy Playstation – I want the gamepad to be Playstation too, not some PS and xbox hybrid.

    Thank you

  • I find the Sony PS4 controller less comfortable than many other modern controllers, so I am really glad to see a more ergonomic design. I can’t wait to hold it and see how it feels.

I really hope the PS5 controller allows voice commands in games. For example I want to shout out spell names in RPGs instead of stopping the game and going into menus to assign spells to buttons all the time. Having to spend so much time in menus is repetitive and totally un-immersive and stops you using the full variety of spells in an RPG.

  • All I Want To know is when is the official-clear and obvious release date.

  • Digital-Weaponry

To be honest I’m not too keen on the white, hopefully we have a few colour options at release.

  • Looks OK, although we need paddles and changeable thumb sticks. Not crazy about the white & black though, don’t think it’ll age that well.

  • I’m a huge PlayStation fan but Sony sure has me worried with the choices they’ve made so far regarding everything PS5. This controller may feel wonderful in the hand but i’ve never seen a more unbelievably unattractive color scheme for any controller in my life. Also, they all but removed the curvature to the triggers that kept your fingers from sliding off of them. The new trigger design seems very similar to the horrible Six Axis PS3 triggers. Sony really don’t seem to understand how to market the new console or the controller generation. Sony needed to describe in much greater detail what the new features are and how they will make this controller great. Sure hope there’s a solid black or solid white version.

  • I like it, it’s really beautiful.

  • What about battery life?

  • Looks great! but are there extra back buttons? or do i need a back button attachment just like on PS4? I’m kind of used to them by now.

  • Sony, I like the new controller design, but PLEASE add color to the Square, Triangle, Circle and Cross (X) buttons!
It makes them easier to differentiate, and the colors are referenced in TONS of older games.

Microsoft tried going greyscale with their Xbox controllers previously and it didn’t work out.
They had to add little labels to the front of the controller, and it looks ridiculous.

Excited to try out the new haptic feedback and adaptive triggers though! :-)

  • No back paddles or anything extra? Such a disappointment!

  • Things I would like to know:
Does it have back buttons (l4, r4?)
    Is it retrocomp with ps4?
    How much will it cost?
Can we have pix from more angles plz?

  • It honestly looks amazing, I can’t wait for the PS5! Well done Sony!

  • Ok, first the thing I don’t like:
    Why a white dominant?

    1. Most of computer mouses are black for a reason: over hours and days, sweat, dead skin, dirt etc… will accumulate, wich is not visible on black but very visible on white => I fear the controller will look filthy every few days.

    2. Most of tv related appliances are black, it’s a bit of a shame to have this white thing breaking the classy « all black » look.

    Then the things I like:

    1. A thicker shape is nice, though I have small hands I always found to dualshoks a bit too small (especially after trying the competition’s controller).

    2. Haptic feedback on R2 L2 is very nice

    3. Good work keeping the sticks symetrical: most games demands both thumbs on the sticks, hands being symetrical it would have been unlogical to use non symetrical sticks

Finally, the things I absolutely do not care about:

Create button, touchpad and embeded audio are in my opinion useless gimmicks draining battery for nothing.
It’s simple: I never used the touchpad on ps4 thinking « wow nice », in the best case it is not used at all (very often) and in the worst case it is used like 10 times in the whole game and breaks gameplay fluidity on each time..

Notice that over the years, I have use all previous controllers from ps1 to ps4.

As a conclusion, I hope there will be a black model.

    • HugoStiglitz_420

The important part of a controller in relation to size is the size of the grips and the DS4’s grips are bigger than the competitions so stop this nonsense about it being small

    • That touchpad drains next to nothing. I’ve done draw tests on the DS4. Same with the LED they drain next to nothing. The rumble motors when not in use drain more.

  • Do those face buttons Light up in their respective colours? (x, triangle, circle and square)
If not they should, would be sick

  • So, wow, yea….

1 – included a microphone array so Sony can listen to everything you say like Apple and Google do…of course it will just be to enhance YOUR experience and data will be anonymous LOL

2 – White….Does anyone at Sony have kids or had kids? Seriously how long does a white controller stay clean?

3 – I got so excited when you said you got rid of the share button!!! Then my hopes were dashed when you basically said you just changed the name of it and still are wasting a button on the controller for junk.

4 – So many questions – How long is battery life? Is it finally replaceable? How much will it cost? What colors will be available? Will it work with PS4? Still no wireless charging? (what year is this)

I know none of them will be answered but I hate seeing a company post a pretty picture and then everyone just drools all over it without actually thinking first. OOOHHHHHH PRETTTYYYYYY…ugh.

    • HugoStiglitz_420

Honestly I doubt it but a replaceable battery would be great. I just had to stop using my longest lasting DS4 because the battery is barely holding a charge now. Also, the springs in the sticks are starting to feel worn, but still would be usable for another year or 2 even in that state but the battery dying within an hour ruins it. Luckily I still had my PS4 Pro controller in the box waiting for this moment.

    • The DS4 battery is replaceable without messing up the warranty. Why would that be an issue?

  • Hey playstation

When I usually go to my friends house I bring my ps4 so we can play together. Can we please have the ability to print your name on the controller I think it will be a nice addition and will also increase online sales, because I switched my DualShock 4 with my friends and he had the old version (mine was better). BTW great job with the new controller I love it, cant wait for what the console looks like.

  • looks amazing but want to know if there are other colors

  • I really like the design! but please color the signs on the buttons (square, circle, triangle, cross and the directions), or even better, make them dimly, tastefully backlit. I think that that would be elegant and next gen looking.

  • Is DualSense supported my ps4 ?
    🤔

  • IllustriousGuest

    Looks amazing

  • 1: I like the idea of the microphone inside the controller the only problem with that is that there should be a way to turn it off
2: Will there be different colors
3: how much will it cost
    4:when is the release date
    5:Anything new? (back pedals etc)

  • It’s a nice controller

  • It looks great. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Just ask how do we make this better.

    Thanks Sony. PS, Vita.

  • Did they get rid of the colors on the 4 buttons?? Not cool!

  • looks soo niceee

  • I for one like the 2 tone. Gives it more contrast more of a futuristic look and am very hyped to get one in my hands. Down sides tho are it might be too big but won’t know till I get one and that they kept the slippery joysticks… could’ve added some grip to em

    • Also people saying “it need to be able to connect to a PS4 and other playstation consuls in order to compete with Xbox” literally the most rtard thing I’ve heard in a while lol. Like yeah cuz I wanna use my ps5 controller on my playstation 2… if I’m going back to an older consul then I’m gonna want to have the older consul feel including the older remotes bunch of big babies who just cry at the stupidest things

    • The fact you’re calling us all idiots but can’t spell “console” amuses me greatly.

  • HugoStiglitz_420

Since a ton of info is left out, I guess this doesn’t mean there won’t be, but THERE BETTER BE SOME DAMN BUTTONS ON THE BACK!!!!! I’m too used to the back button attachment on PS4 so there better be a simple way to have back buttons in the Dualsense or i’mma be pissed. Plus the patents for this controller showed buttons on the back. They better be there. They’re so damned useful, it would be a crime to tease the DS5 having them the way sony has and not include them.

  • Seems like a bit too much of a leap forward on the outside with the contrast, shape etc. I am really excited that the features your packing on the inside are so great though! Will PS5 have dualshock 4 support too?

  • Will it still have a speaker do we know? I’m assuming so?

Also, where are the back buttons? Love them on my DS4, thought they’d be on the PS5 controller 🤔

  • Back button available ?

  • It looks cool, but where is the tracking light for the VR, isn’t it gonna be compatible with PS4 VR?

  • It would be good if we have the type C charger.

  • But if you want to play PsVr on the Ps5 how is the camera gonna see the lightbar on the DualSense ?

  • The DualShock 4 is With bluethooth so is the Ps4 too that means that the Ps5 will be with bluethooth so Yes the Dualshock 4 WILL be compatible with Ps5 ! ;)

  • Loved the new design and feel! Especially the new lighting pattern and the PS button, along with the new haptic feedback features. Really excited about it 😍

  • Controller looks pretty good, sleek design, but could it not come in multi-tone, or at least have a colour scheme that’s better than what’s been shown here? It really undoes the hard work put into it already.

  • I’d want a steel blue design like iron with engravings

  • Kinda disappointed to be honest.

The touchpad is just useless and the technical information we just got is not enough.

Will it be USB-Type C? Can we turn off the microphone if we are not using it? Is there a possibility to get a unicolor controller?

And what about wireless charging? This feature would have been so cool and innovative.

  • Why delete my comments freaks! Once again I ask where the buttons are back ???

  • Loving the design the of the DualSense 5, looking forward to full reveal of PlayStations next generation gaming hardware. Also the inclusion of the Type-C USB port is a nice addition. 😤👍

  • Oh boy the touchpad is back. That thing that 99% of all games used as a giant “pause” button… Yay?

  • FluffySlothicorn

Will there be a Gyro sensor like in the DS4 too? Liked it pretty much to give Monster hunter world gyro aim for ranged weapons on my PC.

  • yeah, let’s steal xbox’s shape and put lines in it… that’ll bring em in… smh
