![Unveiling New Details of PlayStation 5: Hardware Technical Specs [UPDATED]](https://img.youtube.com/vi/ph8LyNIT9sg/maxresdefault.jpg)
Watch live for a deep dive into PS5's system architecture and how it will shape the future of games.
UPDATE: A quick update on backward compatibility – With all of the amazing games in PS4’s catalog, we’ve devoted significant efforts to enable our fans to play their favorites on PS5. We believe that the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 titles will be playable on PS5.
We’re expecting backward compatible titles will run at a boosted frequency on PS5 so that they can benefit from higher or more stable frame rates and potentially higher resolutions. We’re currently evaluating games on a title-by-title basis to spot any issues that need adjustment from the original software developers.
In his presentation, Mark Cerny provided a snapshot into the Top 100 most-played PS4 titles, demonstrating how well our backward compatibility efforts are going. We have already tested hundreds of titles and are preparing to test thousands more as we move toward launch. We will provide updates on backward compatibility, along with much more PS5 news, in the months ahead. Stay tuned!
We know that fans are excited to find out more about our next-generation console, PlayStation 5, and exactly how it will bring about the future of gaming. Today we’re proud to unveil more details behind the technical and hardware components that make PlayStation 5 such an innovative and powerful platform – the ultra-high-speed SSD, integrated custom I/O system, custom AMD GPU with ray tracing, and highly immersive 3D audio. With these capabilities, PS5 will allow developers to maximize their creativity, building expansive worlds and new play experiences in the games they design.
This presentation from Mark Cerny, lead system architect for PS5, dives deep into the hardware system’s architecture and how we designed PS5 to benefit developers and the games they create.
As Mark discussed in his presentation, PS5’s ultra-high-speed SSD and integrated custom I/O system were developed with the goal of removing barriers to play – specifically loading screens. Developers are able to stream assets into PS5 games at an incredibly fast rate, so PS5 play experiences can be seamless and dynamic, with near-instantaneous fast travel through large game worlds. This enhanced speed will enable game developers to create larger, richer worlds without traditional limitations, such as load times, and also allows gamers to spend more time gaming than waiting.
We also wanted to introduce new capabilities with PS5’s custom GPU. Additional GPU power will allow for higher resolution in games, but a major new feature that benefits the visuals of games even further is ray tracing. Ray tracing simulates the way light moves in real life, and how it bounces off various surfaces. Games that take advantage of this feature will render objects much more accurately, and with heightened realism. Water, glass, light refraction, a character’s hair and so on, will look even more realistic.
PS5 will also allow games to offer a much deeper sense of immersion through 3D audio. Visuals are of course imperative to the gaming experience, but we believe audio plays a crucial role as well. We wanted to deliver a compelling audio experience for all users, not just those who own high-end speaker systems. So we designed and built a custom engine for 3D audio that is equipped with the power and efficiency for ideal audio rendering. With 3D audio on PS5, the sounds you hear while playing will offer a greater sense of presence and locality. You’ll be able to hear raindrops hitting different surfaces all around you, and you can hear and precisely locate where an enemy is lurking behind you.
Lastly, we’re excited to confirm that the backwards compatibility features are working well. We recently took a look at the top 100 PS4 titles as ranked by play time, and we’re expecting almost all of them to be playable at launch on PS5. With more than 4000 games published on PS4, we will continue the testing process and expand backwards compatibility coverage over time.
Make sure to keep an eye out for more PlayStation 5 updates down the road, and meanwhile, check out the chart below for the official list of PS5 specs.

Too bad nobody will be alive anymore, by the time PS5 would have been released.
Salut rendez-vous que titanfall 2 sera disponible sur ps4?
The only thing important is what exactly will make it perform different from the competition? Will we have worlds that load objects faster in game than the xbox would. I mean real differences this time. I hate that only 1st party games are quality while the rest are meh.
825GB, eh? Guess that’ll hold a game or two.
Thanks to you. Mark Cerny and everyone working on site/development/testing etc
You tried your best <3
I understand that the issues with Backward compatibility maybe coming from some leading pps at the tops of Sony's management
We hope that u can get PS1/PS2 classic titles to work on PS5 " at least digital titles on the store "
PSP would be nice and vita as well
reserve the legacy of each old generation whenever u introduce a new one
Just like PC … but much better and more stable <3
Everything looks fine and dandy, but if integrated SSD would reach “Time of death” or will get other permanet failure? What then…
will there be hours played feature and a Philippines region for the PSN in the PS5?
awesome! hoping for PS5 Pro details soon
That blank space was a way of trying to work out the kinks to get too the backwards game play that the PS5 will be able too do as the same was said about the PS4. But the PS3 games didn’t work on there. So will this be a unicorn or will it be a top dog of all PS Consoles. Ps. To show a game that was 20yrs old……..will it be able too go back and play PS1 games??🤔
For me Sony accumulates the errors of communication they are to remain far too long silent concerning the PS5 leaving the field free to Microsoft and to its new XBOX. After all this time remaining in silence he returned with a video which was intended for the GDC therefore to the developers but given the current state of things it would have been preferable to adapt its communication since the players were also in the game. In addition M.Cerny does not seem confident on the console especially concerning the Ray tracing and the backward compatibility. Backward compatibility PS2-PS3 ok .. But to say that currently there would be only a hundred PS4 games that would be reteocompatible is it a joke? Knowing that the PS5 is supposed to be released by the end of the year !!! In terms of Raytracing do not even talk about it M.Cerny was more than doubtful on the subject and we see that it is clearly not yet fully developed is clearly not acceptable for a console last generation. Sincerely Sony wake up you stop sleeping Microsoft is already far from you concerning the Next Gen you rest too much on your aqcuis I have always been loyal to PlayStation but I sincerely think of changing for Xbox if its continues. This situation results from your silence and your awkward speaking! WAKE UP!!
Thanks for the post. The fact that this upcoming console doesn’t have full backwards compatibility is disappointing, and will likely force me to purchase your competitor’s product instead. Hopefully a PS5 Pro is in the works, and perhaps then I’ll return to the PlayStation fold. But the fact remains I now have less reasons to buy your upcoming product. Which sucks, because I own thousands of PlayStation games and it traditionally has been my preferred platform.
I know there is often data points touted in the soundbites used by gaming companies to suggest that backwards compatibility is one of the least utilized features, but there is always context that is lost in the narrative. Personally, I recall when I sold my PS2 & games in order to offset the cost for my PS3. Ditto when buying the PS4. Had I known well in advance (say at a Mark Cerny presser) that I could anticipate holding onto my library because the next generation console would include some future-proofing, that might have changed my purchasing strategy. Instead, the customer is left with questions. And too few answers. And that means we’re left wanting. And frustrated.
No matter which way you slice it, the fact that the PS5 won’t support PS1, PS2, PS3, Vita, and PSP games may well be the biggest missed opportunity of this upcoming generation. Picture this: Jim Ryan comes out, summons that baritone timbre of his and says, “Every previously console game bearing the name ‘PlayStation’ will be supported on the PS5…” Seriously, just picture that. Such a mic drop would that make, that any stage personality shortcomings Ryan suffers from would melt away. No longer would any of us see a nervous, uncomfortable man so far outside of his shell that no amount of teleprompters can steady him. Instead we’d see a leader surpass Jack Trenton’s confidence. Surpass Shawn Layden’s flair. Even surpass Mark Cerny’s dulcet tones. Ryan saying this would end the next generation of ‘console war’ and stop dead in its tracks the mind share attrition to Microsoft. And there isn’t a data point around that won’t convince me otherwise.
Instead you’ve left yourself vulnerable to Microsoft’s ability to say the absolute opposite. To put it another way, when your competitor delivers full backwards compatibility in their messaging it really resonates with fans. In fact I can already see the trolling 22-second video ala the style of Shuhei Yoshida & Adam Boyes. only this time its Phil Spencer as the one flaunting, “How do you play your old generation games on the Xbox Series X? This way…” And Phil doing so seamlessly with a gloating smile on his face…
I appreciate that there has been a roadmap that will presumably unfold in the coming months. Yet “The Road to PS5” is already proving to be a bumpy one, if not a slow and boring ride. You’re the market leader, yet you somehow managed to erode any advantage you might have had at the onset to your competitor. I mean, you felt the need to include a PS5 logo as one of the ‘stops’ on this ‘road’. A logo guys. Mercy.
The fact that you felt the urgency to update this post is telling. It’s almost as if you’ve realized you’ve bungled this messaging regarding PS4 backwards compatibility. And you have, obviously. It also seems indicative of a new regime that is a bit out of its depth.
Enacting a half baked strategy is one thing. Not realizing it was a half baked strategy in the first place is the damning part.
Anyway, thanks for reading this. I’ll say “good luck”. But I’d also like to add “do better” too.
So youre “expecting” titles to run better and at “potentially” higher resolutions, what does that mean? Are you guys not sure? Why is this feeling half baked
are you salty about horizion zero dawn going to pc years later
what you dont seem to understand is if Sony releases there exclusives on pc years later they tap into a second market and make more money
now if you dont mind im going to go back to eorzea and kick the ruby weapons butt another 49 times
GDDR6 16GB why so much GPU ram memory? Most video games won’t use that amount at all unless it is for UI or having more games open in the background or something. I hope PS5 has the least 8GB or 16GB DDR4 ram memory for the CPU so we can multitask without slowdowns because PS3 has that problem also PS4 has it too.
PS3 Ram 256MB and VRAM 256MB <- bad joke
PS Vita Ram 128MB and VRAM 512MB <- not learning joke
PS4 RAM amount is 256MB DDR3 <- is this joke?
PS4 Ram amount is 1GB DDR 3 <- the joke is getting bad again?
The standard amount for PC was 8GB for multitasking and now 16GB.
PS4 PRO for that 1GB XD forgot pro part xD Please no PS5 Pro.
