The Last of Us Part II Comes to PS4 in May June 19

An update from the game's director.

To our fans,

Let me cut to the chase and get the news out of the way. The Last of Us Part II has a new release date of May 29 June 19, 2020.

I know. It was just about a month ago when we had our big blowout for the game, letting media play over two hours of it along with debuting our new story trailer and revealing the release date. The positive response we saw from our community was overwhelming. You can feel the energy among the team members. After working on something for so many years, it’s invigorating to get a glimpse of validation for all the hard work.

However, it was during the last few weeks, as we were closing out sections of the game, that we realized we simply didn’t have enough time to bring the entire game up to a level of polish we would call Naughty Dog quality. At this point we were faced with two options: compromise parts of the game or get more time. We went with the latter, and this new release date allows us to finish everything to our level of satisfaction while also reducing stress on the team.

While we’re relieved that we won’t have to compromise our vision, we’re disappointed that we weren’t able to avoid this exact situation. We wish we could’ve foreseen the amount of polish we needed, but the size and scope of this game got the better of us. We hate disappointing our fans and for that we’re sorry.

We hope you understand that this additional time ensures that The Last of Us Part II lives up to our collective ambition as well as our commitment to the highest level of quality. We know the extra few months will add to what may already be an excruciating wait for all of us. We are grateful for your patience and continued support. Come next May June, you will finally rejoin Ellie in The Last of Us Part II.

-Neil

  • Take all the time you need. I’ll be playing through my backlog while I wait.

  • I don’t mind the delay, please take your time.

I only ask that you Embargo the game to all YouTube “Lets Plays” for one month after the games release to tackle spoilers. This game is highly important to myself and for many other fans. The last thing I want is a spoiler thumbnail popping up out of nowhere in YouTube recommends. This is what’s worrying me more then the game being delayed.

Keep up the good work Naughty Dog, and take all the time you need.

  • We can wait!

  • Delayed till May? bet.

  • Give me factions thanks

  • You are THE Neil Druckman, directing a game at THE Naughty Dog studio. If you say you need more time, YOU CAN HAVE IT! I know for a fact that it will only result in the fandom receiving the best version of this masterpiece. I support you and my friends support you. You’re making the right decision.

  • Take your time!

    But Neil,
Can you PLEASE provide some information on the preorder status of Ellie editions? I would love to preorder one, but they are all sold out. Please please please help your big fans get the ultimate version of this game. It means a lot to me.

    Sincerely,
    Neal spelled the good way;)

    • You won’t get one. This whole hype train they started last month was for pre orders like that. They wanted to get people to jump on them.

  • Please take your time.

  • I applaud you for doing the right thing. I’d much rather wait longer for the game than hear about Naughty Dog staff having horrible issues with stress and mental health because of mandatory overtime and unreasonable deadlines. Take the time and don’t crunch!

  • Man all the “take your time” and whatnot. The problem is they never had any intention of releasing this game on the first date. That was there to get people hyped to pre order. What better way to get people to pre order a game then have a huge showcase for the industry only, basically have a State of Play just for a new trailer, and then give people a release date they know they won’t meet. This polish that is causing the game to be delayed didn’t just jump up all of sudden. ND and Neil both knew they weren’t going to meet the release date but at least they can get people to pre order now. It’s a numbers game. Just because there is a blog here doesn’t mean Neil wrote and giving the “we are disappointed in ourselves”. Is BS. Now that those Ellie edition pre orders are sold out they can wait it out until next year. I mean at this point make it a ps5 launch.

Btw, more time doesn’t – to better game. This has happened many times. Crackdown 3 is an example. The Last Guardian is another. More time doesn’t make games better.

Also because they are taking more time doesn’t mean there won’t be crunch time. Come on. Even GoW had crunch time when it was coming out.

    • :( This cynicism is sad to read. This decision was very difficult for us to make. A month ago we were sure we were going to hit the original release date and that’s the only reason we announced it. Things change and we wanted to do the right thing for the game and for our fans, and wanted to communicate openly to you all as soon as we knew. Hope to still see you play next May. Thanks!

    • Your statement doesn’t really have a point.I mean Sony,ND and everyone with an average knowledge of games knew TLoU 2 would and will sell like hell…why announce a fake date just to get people to pre-order?…I mean it really makes no sense,if they had said the date was May from the beginning those Ellie editions would still be sold out and TLoU 2 would still be breaking record of fastest PS4 pre-ordered game.

Also lol quoting a xb** game as an example what a joke.Yeah delay doesn’t ALWAYS mean a better game…but we’re talking ND here.

  • Why is everyone instantly so ok with this…isn’t this the exact reason we had to wait a what felt like a century to get the original release date…naughty dog is not some half baked gaming company…they would have seen this coming much prior…I’m not saying the wait will be to long…but damn…don’t lie to your loyal fans…everybody is like “oh naughty dog you could never do us fans wrong take as much time as you possibly need”…cmon…we are all pissed off, but you all want to seem like the better person…and don’t act like you are not mad…naughty dog has made a mistake and the need to pay for it…get mad, get angry, say how you actually feel…don’t be afraid to “ ask for so more”…I mean really…I was more upset that nobody was saying how they really felt…you guys are going to let naughty dog get away with this and then they will think”oh no one cares” so they will never worry about release dates being real or not. If you hate disappointing your fans then maybe plan a little better…you weren’t even in the damn ballpark…i mean three months…WOW… I could see being off by one…I wouldn’t be surprised if this affects how well the game does on launch

  • I definitely think that decision is amazing because I’m sure this gives great amount of time to improve things that you and the team definitely need and I totally support the wait because I’m 100% sure the team will succeed and I trust that Neil and the team will do great by all of the fans you guys are awesome together as a team and I can’t wait for the amazing experience of the last of us part 2. Sorry about my grammar by the way lol I know it’s really bad.

  • This is fine, I don’t know why companies put pressure on themselves to release a game before they have completely polished it. I prefer this and I’m happy to wait for quality content, and naught dog has always outdone themselves in the past so it’s fine, I trust them entirely.

  • I’m only disappointed because now its no longer coming out close to my birthday. Ah well, easy come easy go.

  • Take the time you need, we know that will be worth : )

  • I think Naughty Dog should give themselves and 2 week break and release the game on June 12th

    • tomara que o mundo acabe antes , ai este jogo não será lançado kkkkk e muito cliente que acha certa a sacanagem das empresas com os clientes ficarão a chupar os dedos…. kkkkkkkkkk seria legal!!!!

  • The delay is a disappointment, but as many others have said its better than a compromised final product of a burnt out team.
Also, now I won’t have to face the uncomfortable feeling of having gotten myself a better present on my wife’s birthday than I got her.

  • Could this be one of few games that releases witout a huge day one update? If so let the game come out whenever its ready

  • I find it funny announcing a delay exactly 1 month after the release date had been announced but I really don’t mind. For years now ma gaming life has been too much games to play and not enough time…wouldn’t mind if it had been delayed to october 2020 but would be nice if this delay was to add online to it haha damn ND bring the online back, specially now that the servers of TLoU 1 were closed.

PS:Nobody realize this but I think it was delayed to give more room for the stupid PS5 to shine.Sony probably showing it in february so yeah, that ma guess.

  • add multiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii please now you have time for that

  • Game will be a masterpiece. The fans never expect NaughtyDog to put out an unfinished game but guys…every time you have a release date just wait one month until you’re sure. Because February is not May and the trend of two month delays announced one month after release date trailers is officially a trend.

  • You take all the time you need, we have faith that you will make the best overall decision for your IP. We look forward to everything you give us.

  • I can wait. I just picked up the first game anyway. I’ll take my time enjoying that while clearing backlog.

  • The only unnerving part about this for me is:

“you will finally rejoin Ellie in The Last of Us Part II.”

Why just Ellie and not “Ellie and Joel”? What are the implications of this? ARE there implications to this? Am I crazy? I hope I’m just crazy. I know he’s in the game, I saw him in the trailer. But I can’t seem to stop feeling nervous for him for some reason.

  • I must admit that I’m disappointed by this delay just a month after announcing the Feb release date but they don’t owe me anything so… keep up the good work though, and better make sure it’s polish and no patches are needed on day one!

  • You know what..? We got games, we have ’em coming from the doors and windows. A lot of half-assed games and games without any emotion, without a punch. Too many rushed ones. So polish as much as you need and can! You got your deadlines, your goals and your objectives, but remember; while we get hyped and excited and saying things like “can’t wait”, we definitely can wait, if that means we get a real gem on our hands! So make us proud!

  • Dear Naughty Dog and Neil,

Delaying The Last of Us Part 2 for a few months is a minor hindrance to someone who has appreciated all of your work from day one. The Last of Us 1 took a long time to create, you’ve already shown that The Last of Us Part 2 is going beyond all the amazing things you’ve accomplished with the first game. These things take time. It’s okay.

Thank you so much for introducing me to the story of Ellie and Joel. I, for one, respect this decision you made, because I trust you and your team.

  • Oh damn!! My birthday is May 30th :] It’s going to be the best birthday present I ever get!

  • I could wait forever because you are Naughty Dog and you never disappoint with your quality of gameplay and attention to narrative detail. Please do what you must and thank you for your hard work.

  • if it’s finally to add Multiplayer then take your time…but to see you didn’t mention this, Then i can wait for this for when its on sale….Too much stuff to play already…No rush for another single player game. It can always wait.

  • I’m glad you’re taking the time to make it polished and perfect. (I just rescheduled my February work vacation for May.)
This is will give me more time to play Death Stranding, and reach a higher level in RDR2o.

QUICK REQUEST from the developers: If you’re going to have an online version again, please allow Clickers/Runners, etc. In TLOU, the first game’s online edition, there were no zombies at all, and I would have liked to use them against other players.

    Thanks!

  • My favourite Infected Class is The Stalkers.

Stalkers were way more creepy and intelligent then other infected. I’m really happy that Naughty Dog are going to do more with them in Part Two. They only appeared on two occasions in the first game.

The most scariest part in The Last Of Us was the hotel basement, which featured yours truly, The Stalkers.

  • I want the graphics to be as awesome as possible when it first comes out. Always awesome to marvel at Naughty Dog’s work. Better to have the polish at launch, for first impression/experience, than in a patch later. I’m glad it’s delayed instead of patched.

    • I’d rather have better A. I and gameplay over graphics. The problem with developers nowadays is they put to much emphasis on graphics and forget about everything else, the end result the game turns out a dud.

Graphics are nice, but it should never be top priority over gameplay and A. I.

  • If you could please come out with more Ellie editions, that would be a great way to make this up to us.

There are a ton of people that really wanted one, but didn’t get one since they sold out in the first few hours.

  • No worries for me about the delay. Crunches are >terrible< for devs :(

But. Can we expect a steady 30-fps experience with this extra polish, on base PS4s?

  • Can some please explain what “polish” is? I’ve heard it so many times from developers, I can’t quite understand it. I mean I know it’s what makes the game look/run better, but what is the process? Is it mainly coding? Animation?

  • ABSOLUTELY LOVE LOVE LOVE both The last of Us and the Uncharted series! I have the Uncharted PS4 and all of the games. I would LOVE to see both stories come out as movies! Get that done would u please?! :) As most have said, release date is no big deal. The Last of Us was my most favorite game story of all time. I’ll wait as long as it takes! I am sad to see that she’s most likely gay though. I’m tired of every single movie having a main role being gay, or TV show, & now video games. It’s shoved down our throats constantly. It would’ve been nice to have it left out for once.

  • Would your team ever consider releasing the demo from the recent TLOU 2 hands on event? Would be cool for us, aka your fans to try it out and give you feedback.

  • Same old song and dance for more than 2 years. What they should do is sell the game for much less than $60. Stop sending out BS release dates. Figure out a realistic goal before making said goal public. It better be the best game of the year for a really good price. I’m sorry but you guys dug this hole.

  • Dear Santa
All I want for Christmas is the last of us 2 demo

  • This will give y’all time to refund my money or the game back :)
