The Last of Us Part II Comes to PS4 in May June 19

An update from the game's director.

To our fans,

Let me cut to the chase and get the news out of the way. The Last of Us Part II has a new release date of May 29 June 19, 2020.

I know. It was just about a month ago when we had our big blowout for the game, letting media play over two hours of it along with debuting our new story trailer and revealing the release date. The positive response we saw from our community was overwhelming. You can feel the energy among the team members. After working on something for so many years, it’s invigorating to get a glimpse of validation for all the hard work.

However, it was during the last few weeks, as we were closing out sections of the game, that we realized we simply didn’t have enough time to bring the entire game up to a level of polish we would call Naughty Dog quality. At this point we were faced with two options: compromise parts of the game or get more time. We went with the latter, and this new release date allows us to finish everything to our level of satisfaction while also reducing stress on the team.

While we’re relieved that we won’t have to compromise our vision, we’re disappointed that we weren’t able to avoid this exact situation. We wish we could’ve foreseen the amount of polish we needed, but the size and scope of this game got the better of us. We hate disappointing our fans and for that we’re sorry.

We hope you understand that this additional time ensures that The Last of Us Part II lives up to our collective ambition as well as our commitment to the highest level of quality. We know the extra few months will add to what may already be an excruciating wait for all of us. We are grateful for your patience and continued support. Come next May June, you will finally rejoin Ellie in The Last of Us Part II.

  • Awesome, this will give me more time to enjoy Cyberpunk.

    • Take all the time u need. I don’t care when it comes as long as it is a masterpiece.

    • If Ellie can deal with the hardships of her life, I can wait a few months.

    • And Final Fantasy VII Remake. I’m actually very happy they moved the release date. Less stress on the team and my wallet. We know the game will be fantastic, go Naughty Dog.

    • I have waited for so long now that I am now used to it.So take all the time you need but when it releases finally,it must live up to the hype

    • They should drop us the demo that was played behind closed doors. That would be dope.

    • Cyberpunk 2077 will likely release late 2020 or early 2021.

    • The games new release date is a week away from E3 2020. Hmm? Coincidence!?!…More time to publish? Or a marketing decision? Reality Distortion shield. #TruthIsOutThere

    • Good Call!! Im glad they are taking the time they need to polish it and now im glad for this reason too!

  • No biggie, I can wait!!

  • Take all the time you need, my backlog isn’t going anywhere.

  • Well, this is fine. More time to develop = better end product. I have faith in the Naughty Dog team to get it right. :)

    • Thanks! We appreciate your understanding. Looking forward to getting this in your hands.

    • No it doesn’t. So tired of people saying this crap. Take all the time you need. This will mean we will get a better product. Absolutely doesn’t not mean that. Games have had delays and turned out like crap.

    • Phreakydeke27: when was the last time a Naughty Dog game got delayed and turned out like crap?

while your statement is true with some games and developers but I Tidusfanboy was talking to Naughty Dog

  • Take your time, Cory.

  • Honestly, I appreciate the earnest and honest response to what couldn’t have been an easy decision.

Naughty Dog doesn’t release their games half-assed, requiring numerous patches after launch in order to get rid of game-crashing bugs. As much as I was looking forward to playing this in February, knowing you’re taking an extra couple of months to give the game the polish it deserves makes me happier than I would’ve been playing a less-than-stellar product months earlier.

    • Thanks for your understanding! We wanted to be transparent to our fans.

    • It was never going to release in Feb, this is all marketing speak. They announced the Feb date to also announce the premium editions and get some preorders going. Naughty Dog games have not released before April the last few releases. “Patience is a virtue,” and this game will be worth the wait.

  • Take all of the time you need. You guys have built a reputation for creating stellar games and I have 100% faith that you guys will deliver another masterpiece. Ignore the nay-sayers who give you guys grief as they just want the game ASAP and cannot wait nor understand why you made the choice you made. I for one will be here just patiently waiting. =)

  • Honestly who didn’t see this coming?

    • While it has always been the case, they definitely have never delayed a release date only a month after announcing it. Thats pretty weird lol.

    • Probably a lot. I mean all that hype with an industry event to play the game, new trailer and pre orders. ND and Neil wanted to get the pre orders started. That’s all this was. There is no way in hell just now they realized “Hey we need more time!” They knew this going I]into that event.

  • It’s all good

  • The older I get, the more patient I become. Knowing it’s Naughty Dog, this delay will be used to make the game better, rather than slapping bandaids on something that’s hopelessly broken.

    • Let’s be honest. Even if they released the game 2 months ago, a Naughty Dog would still have released a more refined package than most developers. LOL

  • “Come next May, you will finally rejoin Ellie in The Last of Us Part II.”

Until May gets here… Then we’ll get… “You’ll finally rejoin Ellie in The Last of Us Part II, Holiday 2020 on the PS5.”

    • lol not a chance?

    • this is exactly what i’m expecting to happen. it’s pre-ordered, but my excitement peaked ages ago.

    • Agreed, I think May is as far as they can push it back. With everything already released for it it would do more harm than good pushing back further. Additionally I’m more likely expecting a PS5 remaster of part 2. Just like they did with the first one on the PS4. It’s a smarter profit making option than pushing back initial release for PS5.

    • @ ZambieHunter – “It’s a smarter profit making option”…love the nickname you give to cash-grabbing and spitting in the face of fans.I really hope the rumors of PS5 being full backwards compatible are true…this way hopefully it’ll be the death of recycled games.

    • @Zambiehunter

If you already buy the game for PS4, that version is likely to receive a free patch to take advantage of the PS5 when you purchase a PS5. I can’t see them charging people twice within six months for a remastered version, that would be a bad move. If Xbox One X can do it, then PS5 sure can, if not I’ll be seriously disappointed with Sony.

  • Would’ve been a perfect B-day present for me in February, but take your time. Can’t wait to play the game when it’s ready!

  • By all means, take your time. I can probably speak for the majority of avid Naughty Dog fans when I say that we appreciate the time and effort you are putting into the game. If anything, it provides us with comfort knowing that your vision for the game isn’t being hindered by anything. I will wait patiently for May to come around. Love you guys/gals!

    • Aw, thanks! The appreciation is really all your way, to our fans, for being consistently awesome and a pleasure to talk to. We love you all as well!

  • “A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad.” ~ Shigeru Miyamoto

No problem, thanks for updating us, Neil. I’ll just change the timer on my cryogenic chamber. See you in May! :)

  • Would have loved to play it on the original release date, but there are plenty of other games coming out in the Feb/Mar time frame to keep me busy. This release date might actually turn out better, as it will be able to stand out on its own, without people feeling the rush to beat the game before a handful of other AAA titles drop.

  • Take your time and bring mp with u

  • That’s ok. Take your time ND.

  • Everyone is chill with this. Do What You Do™.

  • I was expecting a delay. Take all the time you need.
    I have faith in you.

  • Thank you Neil! I’m really sure this delay is for good purposes, we love Naughty Dog and know that you guys are giving all of yourselves. Pre-ordered both Physical and Digital editions for The Last of Us: Part II, can’t wait for May!

  • I would’ve loved to be playing it sooner but I know the wait will be worth it. It always is for a Naughty Dog title. Take your time Team.

  • I’d rather have a fully functioning game than a buggy ones with multiple patches. Developers need to realize that we can wait on games, especially if they’re honest with us about why. I don’t want anyone to get burned out because of a push to meet a deadline. That shows poor management. Naughty Dog has always delivered quality games…I’m glad for the update and the later release. Go make a kick ass game!

  • Take your time, don’t crunch! Fans will respect you devs and we don’t want burnout, or go through continuous layoffs.

  • If it means people aren’t overworked to meet super tight timelines, and an overall more polished game, it’s all good : )

  • Would be totally great if they implement gyroscopic motion aim with the extra time they have! Love ya, Naughty Dogs.

  • No problem! Take all the time you need! This gen will go out with a bang with this game, as was the last generation!
So, more time to put money aside for the collector’s edition. Also, my backlog is overwhelming with over 50 unfinished games… so that’s that. :))
Thanks for the info! Wish all the power and strength to the team!

    • Thanks, we’ll let the team know. Appreciate your continued patience, we know it’s been a long time waiting for some of you so far.

  • Naughty Dog has more than earned their reputation for quality. I’m certain the reward will be worth the wait.

  • Take your time, we will be ready. Love you guys!

  • Wow… Look at all these understanding and supportive comments! The respect ND has from their fans is almost nonexistent elsewhere in the industry. This speaks volumes as to how people feel about what they do!

    • We love our fans. It is great to find such understanding and patience from everyone. This wasn’t an easy decision to make but we know it’s the right now. Glad to see you all can see that. Thank you!

  • all good man, thanks for the update. Take care!

  • This is sad to hear but I’d rather play an amazing game day one than play it a month or 2 later when it’s patched & “done.”
Don’t work too hard during the holidays!

  • Take your time Neil and team! I am so VERY excited to see how Ellie has been all these years.

  • “A late game is only late until it ships. A bad game is bad until the end of time.”

    – Shigeru Miyamoto

(I feel like the other version of this quote that people paste into comments is a poorly translated version of this. Delayed games are not guaranteed to be good games. This is a much better quote anyway.)

  • Better to wait for a complete a great game, than buy it by pieces. In Naughty Dog we trust.

  • This doesn’t look good at all, especially when you made a trailer a month ago just to announce the release date. I don’t remember any games being delayed when Amy Hennig was still there. I don’t know how she did it, but games came out on TIME and weren’t DELAYED!

    • I’m sorry, would you rather play it all the way through to find out its flawed, then have to replay it months later (after it’s patched) to have it work better?
Because I prefer my first playthrough impression to be as good as possible, personally.

    • capn_vlad you mean to say that Naughty Dogs was mocking us announcing a game that was still of such great need to be polished?

  • This is great news. With doom eternal being delayed to march 20th i was worried i’d have to rush through tlou2 to get to doom on time. Now i can take my time with both games. Take your time, I’m fine with waiting, and i have faith in you guys.

  • Of course it’s disappointing, but that is because we know we have to wait a little longer for a Naughty Dog game. It isn’t a naughty Dog game if you compromise your vision for a deadline though. So we can wait some more for the authentic experience, thanks for working so hard to bring it to us.

  • I mean, I guess I’ll have more time with Final Fantasy VII Remake. But it still sucks that I have to wait even longer.

  • Kinda hurt tbh.

    • Same. I never thought I’d be playing TLOU in summer..
The game clearly has winter vibes.. I hoped for a Christmas release a year ago and I’m not even Christian, but it’s festive, February was okay because, it’s still winter, but May? It’s going too far.

    • Yup…can’t wait any longer:(

  • disappointed as it would give me this gift game on my birthday February 24 :(

  • I see everyone is in agreement that Ellie’s journey is worth the wait. Thank you for making a great game, and have no doubt this will add to the masterpiece!! And Ellie’s legacy!!

  • I’m not mad, but I am sad. I look forward to playing in May…

  • No worries here! Take your time, I’m all for ensuring the game is to the standard you want. Naughty Dog as a studio has earned that level of respect and trust to do what is needed, however long it takes. Excited to play it when it does come out. Thanks for the update!

  • It’s okay, more time for me to finish ff7 remake :)

  • I knew it :(

  • It would be nice to at least have a playable demo for everyone like what we were shown at state of play, so that we can get a taste of the game while we wait.

  • At least it won’t be released broken like Bethesda games where they just patch it over the Period of a year and say it’s not how you launch it’s what it becomes LOL.

I have the utmost respect for Naughty Dog, one of the few companies that actually give a damn about their work and have passion for video games.

  • no worries here!!!

  • If this means Naughty Dog staff get to go home at a reasonable time each day, it’s worth it. We as gamers can’t criticise the concept of crunch, then get angry about release dates. I get the disappointment, but I don’t want to play a masterpiece if it meant people working themselves to death.

The more studios that swallow their pride when it comes to a delay because they take great pride in their sanity and work, the better for everyone.

Please don’t feel bad about the delay, Naughty Dog.

    • I was about to post the same thing. Crunch is bad for developers and the industry, I’m happy to hear Sony is pouring extra money without excessive crunch time forced upon the developers.

I view this as a total win for everyone.
