An Update on Next-Gen: PlayStation 5 Launches Holiday 2020

Featuring a new controller with haptic technology and adaptive triggers.

Since we originally unveiled our next-generation console in April, we know that there’s been a lot of excitement and interest in hearing more about what the future of games will bring. Today I’m proud to share that our next-generation console will be called PlayStation 5, and we’ll be launching in time for Holiday 2020.

These updates may not be a huge surprise, but we wanted to confirm them for our PlayStation fans, as we start to reveal additional details about our vision for the next generation. WIRED magazine covered these updates and more in .

The “more” refers to something I’m quite excited about – a preview of the new controller that will ship with PlayStation 5. One of our goals with the next generation is to deepen the feeling of immersion when you play games, and we had the opportunity with our new controller to reimagine how the sense of touch can add to that immersion.

To that end, there are two key innovations with the PlayStation 5’s new controller. First, we’re adopting haptic feedback to replace the “rumble” technology found in controllers since the 5th generation of consoles. With haptics, you truly feel a broader range of feedback, so crashing into a wall in a race car feels much different than making a tackle on the football field. You can even get a sense for a variety of textures when running through fields of grass or plodding through mud.

The second innovation is something we call adaptive triggers, which have been incorporated into the trigger buttons (L2/R2). Developers can program the resistance of the triggers so that you feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain. In combination with the haptics, this can produce a powerful experience that better simulates various actions. Game creators have started to receive early versions of the new controller, and we can’t wait to see where their imagination goes with these new features at their disposal.

While there’s much more to share about PlayStation 5 in the year ahead, we have plenty of blockbuster experiences coming your way on PS4, including Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II, and Ghost of Tsushima. I’d like to thank all PlayStation fans for continuing the journey with us, as we embark on the future of games.

  • PS5…I like the name. I hope the trackpad is still on the controller. So much potential.

    • The PS4’s Dual Shock 4 track pad had potential, but it wasn’t used much at all.

I can’t even recall many/any games where the track pad was the only way to control things.

If they can swap the track pad with something that will be more useful and applicable with PS5 games, I’d be all for it.

    • You are right will we still be able to have the touchpad and will we have a standard headphon plug in

  • When can I pre-order?

    • I presume at least you’d have to wait until 2020.

      They said the PS5 launches Holiday 2020 meaning Q4 2020 (Oct ~ Dec 2020).

At the very least, I think we’d be able preorder starting around Q3 2020 (summer 2020 basically).

  • I know it’s a small thing, but I’m glad it’s being called the PS5 rather than PlayStationOneToRuleThemAll or some such nonsense! Quick question – will you have the option to turn off the haptic feedback the same way you can the rumble? First two things I do when starting a game – turn off rumble & turn on captions!

  • Can’t get PS4 -_-

  • Finally!

  • If they are going to make another controller, they better include a normal cross shaped d-pad this time, the separated up down left right its just not great if we compare it to xbox and nintendo controllers, Sony had a dualshock 4 prototype with a good d-pad but they ditch it to put the crap one, hell even the vita had a good dpad they just need a better version of that thing.

    • There was nothing wrong with the ps4 standard controller at all. The space between the buttons, pro controller with extra features?lol Are you’ll xbox fans in this blog? Noone want or needs cheating modified headshot remotes or the little space between the left and right.smh Again, we are all looking forward to sonys’ new state of the art addition to our home entertainment and gaming experience. I for one hope the controller contraction doesn’t stray to far from the sixxasis. I’ve grown to the feel of it in my hand and if you’re a die hard COD multiplayer like me you understand exactly were I’m going.

  • I wonder how the console will actually look.

  • Very exciting to read about the new controller, and that it doesn’t deviate too far from the DualShock 4. One point that has me curious, albeit apprehensive as a disabled gamer is the “adaptive triggers”, which can have added resistance incorporated as per gameplay design by developers. Will the end user be able to adjust this feature as well? I ask because currently I require the DualShock 4s trigger springs to be removed in order for me to pull them due to my form of muscular dystrophy. These “adaptive triggers” will either be a shining point for similarly disabled gamers or a very dark point in accessibility going forward.

  • Something that has to be said. Well done on calling it PlayStation 5. I know people will joke it was the most obvious thing ever but then we live in a world without a PSP 2, a DS 2 and a Wii 2, 3 things that easily would have sold twice as much as they actually did with the names that were actually chosen for them. So we’ll done there and I can’t wait.

2nd, you NEED to do this with the PS5 at launch to get it out the gate in sheer brilliance. And that is, bundle FFVII Remake, even a digital version, with every single SKU of the PS5 on sale late 2020. Get talking to Square Enix now and get this done.
Either that or your own The Last of Us Part II. Because I guess not everyone would want FFVII Remake. Also have them ready and enhanced for PS5 too. The console will do even better if you do this.

    • And I know there are plenty other PS4 games, that we already know are going to play on PS5, that you could bundle but these 2 games are out in 2020 and will still be fresh in the industry’s minds.
Sure around the time PS5 launches, FFVII Remake and TLOU Part II will very likely be nominated and picking up plenty of GOTY style awards so bundling them for free will have an even bigger impact :)

  • Super excited to get that controller in my hands and the PS5 in my den! Would also love to see what is next for PS VR2 (which will be my first ever VR purchase). Everything sounds great so far, just sucks we have to wait an entire year, was hoping for a September 2020 release. Super excited, cannot wait! <3

  • Really like the way SIE is dropping information this year. I hope this new format for releasing information on Hardware, Games, Services, and Accessories continues going forward. Only thing I would like to see added is the return of PlayStation Experience.

Moving on from that, I am quite please with everything I have read today.

Mic on the Controller – Check
Great for quickly moving between Gaming, Music, Video, Web Browsing, Banking, etc., will make the PS5 a very nice upgrade over PS4 as the center of the Smart Home.

    USB-C – Check
Finally, the days of having multiple cables to charge everything are coming to an end.

    Adaptive Triggers – Check
The XBO triggers make playing Forza Horizon incredible. Very excited to have something even better comming to racing games on PS5.

Haptic Feedback to Replace Rumble – Check
Been waiting for this on for a long time.

Larger Battery, Longer Battery Life – Check
    Thanks You So Much!

More Feature Rich OS – Check
Between the on controller Mic and the new OS, PS5 is sounding like the center of the Smart Home!!!
Now it will just need a Mobile Sibling to complete the PlayStation Ecosystem.

This is not even everything, and it is enough to make me very excited about PS5. I look forward to every piece of news coming, and can’t wait to have PS5’s in the homes of my friends and family, and at the center of my personal Smart Home Hub!

  • Please make sure you have a solid game lineup for launch day! One new game for each genre; Gran Turismo 7, Horizon Zero Dawn 2, The Last of Us Complete collection and a few great indies at the very least!
I loved the PS4, but the launch lineup was extremely weak. Having said that, it seems like folks at Sony learn from “missed opportunities”.

  • I’m looking forward to it, but significantly less so than I was for PS4 when that launched. Its mainly due to how less of a use I get out of PS4 lately compared to other consoles. Playstation has lost a lot of goodwill over the mess up of PS Plus, delayed crossplay, no native BC, etc.. Regardless of either next gen console’s graphics capability, my main library would be on the console with better backwards compatibility.

I would be inclined to get this as an exclusives only console. Then again, without Evolution studios, it won’t be the console to get for racing games. It definitely needs something better than a Killzone to warrant a launch day purchase. Mainly looking forward to something like Siren 3 / Gravity Rush 3 / New IP from Sony Japan Studios. It needs a solid 5-6 exclusives to interest me. Let’s see how it goes at E3.

  • “The second innovation is something we call adaptive triggers, which have been incorporated into the trigger buttons (L2/R2). Developers can program the resistance of the triggers so that you feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain.” Just hope this can resist a lot of usage, sounds like it might be quite sensible and easy to break.

  • Oh poo. I was hoping there was going to be some pictures!

  • YAAS I LOVE YOU SONY! ! AND THANK YOU!! MARVELOUS WORK!!

  • Let’s hope PlayStation would support HDD extended storages in order to play ps4 digital games on a ps5 system in order to save room on ps5’s system storage to store ps5 digital games for instance. Just like ps4 system can play ps4 digital games right off the 8TB HDD extended storage which I do have plus hoping the ps5 system does NOT requires formatting the extended storage before using for first time though. Lastly, I would plan on buying digital versions since I do not trust the disc drive just in case of disc drive ejecting discs unexpectedly on a ps5 system just like ps4 systems does though.

  • Wow, that’s impressive. Can’t wait, the controller sounds epic. Now the Leviathan axe which is already superb will be extra superb……Now onto my savings!!!

  • Hyped for new console, new controller sounds great, please no micro-usb, such a fragile connector. But truly for PS5, I just hope that the “can’t mention” future of VR means that PlayStation is actively pursuing tracking solutions beyond a single camera and light orbs. I LOVE PSVR, but games like Beat Saber have revealed the flaw in the current gen tracking.

  • I’m kinda glad it’s an actual console but at the same time I thought of a cheeky way to make PS5 like a Nintendo switch.

5 in Japanese is Go so wouldn’t it be funny if they made a portable version and call it PlayStation Go? (Not being serious just a tongue in cheek joke)

  • i cant wait for the ps5!!!!!!!!!!! LETS ****ING GO BABY YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yessssss please launch it fast I can’t wait to own a new console any information about it’s starting price?

  • This Xbox looks great! Glad they finally announced it!

  • The resistant shoulder buttons sounds exciting. I wonder how different it feels with little resistance compared to max resistance. It’s going to be very satisfying to finally get ahold of this thing.

  • I’ve been with PlayStation since PS3 and everything I’ve read about the next console so far sounds like it will be an incredible machine. I’m happy we can finally call it the PlayStation 5 officially and begin the hype for 2020.

  • This sounds exciting! Please make a Pro controller like other mentions that also has paddles! Please!

  • Part of me is excited to get my hands on a brand new PS5 and another part of me is terrified as to how much I’m gonna be paying for it.

  • PS5 should get a permanent solution to the controller analog drift problem !!!!
Basically has been part of every last generation console before. I don’t wanna be spending more excess money on my console or controller after i purchase it

  • Regarding latest sales in PS store. PS+ does not offer extra discounts anymore?

  • Nice, cant wait!!!!

  • Some people will gripe and moan about anything, you simply cannot please them all. I’ve been playing video games since the commodore and Atari. Through all these systems no system series has kept me absolutely thrilled like PlayStation. The bumps in the road are nothing compared to the hills and valleys of other consoles. Even when I went to PC, it was great, but still not a convenient PlayStation. I am excited to see what’s new for PlayStation 5 and I have no doubt that it will still be MY best place to play.

  • Yawn…….. 2 write ups about the controllers. We all knew about that a long time ago.

  • I know that this will be backwards compatible but how far will that go? Will it just allow PS4 games or will PS3 work as well? I know PS3 played PS1 games but very few PS2 games.

  • I REALLY hope its at least a 1TB SSD. a 2TB would be ideal, but I don’t expect that would happen.

  • Time to start saving for 6 units.

  • when. can you pre order it and will it be ready. ready. before Christmas

  • Excellent! I can’t wait to get my hands on it!

  • Could you please let other companies make wireless controllers for this one. I know it’s a “security” thing but I miss the days when I had options. Or just make a nicer elite controller like Microsoft.

  • When is this going to be up for pre-order? And are you going to screw non-US customers over like you usually do?

  • Backwards compatible with psone, ps2, ps3 & ps4 games please. One library, 1 console. And a new handheld

  • Finally… great news rises.

  • Sony’s recent backwards censorship policies really killed a lot of my enthusiasm for the PS5, Hope they figure out what era it is by the time PS5 drops.

  • Thank you, Im excited for PS5! I will get PS5 and still be on PS4 :)

  • Exciting sounding, but also sounds super expensive.

  • Ladies and gentlemen…. it’s time to get hype.

E3 should be LEGENDARY next year. Really hope the launch titles delivers and maybe we get a familiar face. Please don’t hold back day 1, devs. Tap in as much as possible!!! Native 4K!!!!! Improve HDR!!!!

  • I always knew it would be called PlayStation 5 from the very start, because, well, why not?

I’m slightly concerned about the deeper immersion features stated to replace rumble, haptic feedback, and adaptive triggers. This kinda feels off compared to the standard rumble feature. Couldn’t we just have options to alternate between the regulars with the new features? Just suggesting.

Moreover, I would really like to see far faster patching and downloads in the PS5 to shave time off downloads & have the ability to play downloaded TV episodes and play them from the main menu like PS3 did as one option to alternate between that & seeing them through PlayStation Vue. Missed that. Like to see that in PS5.

Still, I’m excited to see more of what PS5 offers, long as the core features still remain the same.

BTW, everyone, do know Sony’s still got the yet-to-be available Archival Disc in the works said to hold lots more data than Blu-Ray. If we get a new format branched off from that disc format on the PS5, we could get a lot more disc space for games, including more longer games, & such. Would you like that?

  • I hope PS5 lets us track how much time was spent on each game. Also backwards compatibility with PS1-PS3 would be amazing!
Also I wonder if we will still have remote play on it, at least for PS4 games.

  • Whoops! I really meant, alternating watching TV episodes & movies between the main menu without the mandatory internet connection needed to watch them and watching them through PlayStation Video, that needs the internet connection to watch them. Sorry about this little mistake.

  • Why not keep rumble technology and combine haptic feedback with it? It should give both amazing feel and better use out of it. Been with you single PSone to now but i hope that PS5 specs and UI are greater then what PS4 can do. Don’t get me wrong but i still love DS4 controller on PS4 and hope you’ll still allow us to use it on PS5. Not the same mistake what you did with DS4 home button not working on PS3.

DS4 touchpad wasn’t even use to its fullest yet because game company are scared to take risk and get bad feedbacks. Make use of touchpad on DS4 and newer DS5 on PS5 please.

Please stop remaking old games to new consoles. Its annoying as heck, bring us some new AAA video games.

  • Hope Sony reads these comments…please add backwards compatibility to the PS5. Or at the very least, improve your selection of PS2 and PS1 games to PS Now. The PS2 selection is 100% lackluster given the quantity of amazing games that console offers, PS1 games are nowhere to be found. The MGS Collection doe not support pressure sensitive buttons.
