June’s Free PS Plus Games are Borderlands: The Handsome Collection and Sonic Mania

Revisit Gearbox’s hit FPS series or indulge in some vintage platforming action.

June’s monthly free games for PlayStation Plus subscribers offer a heady mix of high-speed retro platforming and over-the-top shoot ‘n’ loot FPS action, available to download starting next week on June 4. Let’s take a closer look.

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection

June’s Free PS Plus Games are Borderlands: The Handsome Collection and Sonic Mania

Getting excited for the freshly announced Borderlands 3, launching later this year? Now is the time to revisit the franchise with Borderlands: The Handsome Collection, which includes both Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and get reacquainted with Gearbox’s hilarious loot-focused FPS series.

Not only does The Handsome Collection include all DLC for both titles, enhanced local multiplayer and remastered visuals, but if you played either title on PS3 you can carry over your save data and can pick up where you left off in the PS4 version.

Sonic Mania

The blue blur returned in style in 2017 with this lovingly-crafted throwback to the Sega icon’s 2D side-scrolling roots, tailor-made to put an ear-to-ear grin on the faces of the Sonic faithful.

You know the drill: Sonic, Tails and Knuckles face off against their old nemesis, Dr. Eggman, across a mix of re-imagined classic stages and brand new zones. Expect lightning-fast platforming thrills, countless collectibles, hidden areas, and both competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes for two players.

While you’re waiting for those to drop, you’ve still got a few days left to download May’s line-up before they go away on June 3: check out the award-winning narrative adventure What Remains of Edith Finch and the madcap couch co-op hit Overcooked!

  • They just announced a new price increase in subscriptions, so maybe this month got good games to balance customer perception and acceptance.

  • Finally some decent games. This is the first good week since January.

  • This is a good month with good offerings. With that said, Playstation needs to step up the their game with PS+. There are other platforms I can use if I don’t wish to pay the online MP fee & want better online sales. PS+ needs to be worthwhile & right now it just isn’t (for me & many others).

  • Good lineup. The Handsome Collection is something I wanted to try after my only exposure to Borderlands was through Telltale’s Borderlands. However, wasn’t sure if I was eager enough to drop money on it. But this way, I can have it in my collection and have a go at it later. Busy with getting the Platinum for God of War now. Haven’t even started on AC Odyssey or Red Dead 2. My shame list is piling up!

Hey hey hey, stop censoring small japanese devs today

  • Heh, maybe after the newly announced price raises in a bunch of different countries go into effect they’ll have more than two games. Nah just kidding.

  • Hate to play devils advocate here… but yeah.. these games are trash.. can’t actually speak on behalf of sonic.. but come on? Sonic? Even if it was the one good game.. yeah.. not interested!

Borderlands 2 is just crap tbh.. could never get into it like I did with the first one.. FPS in RPGs usually sucks most of the time anyways..

Disappointing month again.. I really thought they were gonna do big things for the E3 buildup hype.. but alas, more poop games, another poop month

  • Looking forward to playing these two next month. Thank you Sony.

  • I downloaded sonic mania and it is ineligible for application start.i deleted multiple times and reinstalled mutiple still lock.i have playstation plus until 4/27/2020.whats going on?

    • We’re you able to resolve the issue, I’m in the exact same situation, it just says ineligible without really explaining why.

    • I just found out, you need to be at the latest firmware to allow this game’s launch (in This case firmware 6.71)

This is amazing and definitely deserves some attention!
PS+ hasn’t truly wow’ed me most months, but this announcement blew me away!

Excellent! I already own Sonic Mania, but I’ve been debating getting the Borderlands collection, and now most of it is available for PS Plus.

  • I like PS plus. But I love jrpg’s and RPGs in general. It feels like we don’t get that genre as often as the others, if ever. Could you please get more jrpg on PS plus, the PS4 as a lot of good quality ones they could put on there.

    Thank you.
