PlayStation Plus: Free Games for April 2019

Survive brutal exile in ancient civilization or fight for your life in an uncompromising dystopian future.

Two new titles join the PlayStation Plus monthly games lineup on April 2, each distinct but offering their own unique spin on what it means to survive. Let’s dive in and take a closer look.

Conan Exiles

Drawing inspiration from the classic barbarian tales, survival open world survival game Conan Exiles winds back the clock to the very dawn of civilization, casting you as a forgotten exile abandoned alone in the desert for crimes unknown.

Starting out with nothing but a loincloth and your own two hands, you’ll have to explore this vast, hostile world, gathering materials, crafting tools and carving out a new life for yourself in a world filled with danger.

Exploring a shared online space, you’ll have the chance to meet with other players, build settlements and bases together, and even raise your own armed fortresses as you advance your mission to dominate this brave new world.

The Surge

From the creators of brutal medieval action-adventure Lords of the Fallen comes a challenging sci-fi spin on the hardcore RPG genre.

Take on the role of new staff member Warren who, following a trying first day on the job, awakens to the aftermath of an unknown cataclysm to find his new workplace devastated and its ruins overrun by out-of-control machines.

Explore the twisting maze-like environment of the CREO research facility, fending off haywire tech, scavenging new parts and weapons, rescuing survivors and unlocking the secrets of this vast, abandoned facility.

Both titles will be available to download from PlayStation Store on April 2.

In the meantime, you still have a few days left to pick up March’s two PlayStation Plus titles. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is a great chance to revisit one of the grand-daddies of the FPS genre, while The Witness is a mesmerizing slow-burn of gradual discovery and smart puzzle design.

If you haven’t tried them, there’s time yet: both will be available to download for PS Plus members until April 1 (no foolin’!).

Let us know how you get on with March and April’s titles and we’ll see you again next month.

  • Shawn Layden and Jim Ryan are making terrible decisions for the company and burning good will at almost PS3 pre launch rate. Have you guys learned nothing? Bring Kaz and House out of retirement and get the train back on the tracks before it’s too late.

  • Weak, lame, pathetic. They don’t even try anymore.

  • Y’all need to resurrect the IGC concept.

  • Both games seem pretty decent and worth a try IMO, especially Conan. I’m just baffled at Sony’s strategy after shifting gears with the removal of PS3 and Vita games, however. With such a large library of VR games now and having already given some VR games away with PS+, not adding one older VR game to the lineup seems like a huge missed opportunity. Doing so would be a guaranteed incentive for at least a few people to buy the VR hardware.

  • Yes! Both seem really interesting and quite substantial.

So, where are the other two monthly titles?

  • Incredibly disappointing. I’ve been a PS+ subscriber since 2013, but my membership runs out at the end of April, and I won’t be renewing.

Quantity isn’t everything, but more games meant greater odds that something good that I don’t already have would come along. (E.g. The Witness last month was a game I would have appreciated, except I already own it.)

So I’m going to do the only sensible thing and wait until you have a service worth subscribing to before I re-subscribe. PlayStation Plus has clearly been subtly replaced by PlayStation Minus.

    • i also own witness many moons ago, when they put a great game you already bought it still counts as value for the service, it’s the months with all dreck that make me wince. in the ps3 era i was excited for plus day getting sweet games. now i’m impressed when it is decent. so sitness and hitman etc are what we want to see even if it doesn’t suit us personally, due to owning already or not being to our tastes for genre.

The witness is a score for friends that missed it and like puzzle / logic games so tell some friends to grab it before it comes off Tuesday.

    • “PlayStation Minus”

that’s exactly what it should be called now!

  • More money for less value… seriously if I didn’t need PS+ to play through my backlog I would be out but that’s not going to last forever especially if you keep offering less games and worse ones at that.

Get your ass in gear Sony I’m eye nintendo for the next generation.

  • No wonder a 1 year subscription code to PS Plus was heavily discounted from many retailers earlier this month. Gotta get people locked in before they see this month’s rubbish games. LOL.

  • How do two games like this justify the recent price increase?

  • Not sure if Sony reads the comments but here is a suggestion (not a complaint): each month include at least one game that isn’t M-rated. While adults may be responsible for every subscription, not every PS4 user is an adult. All I look for in the free games are those that I can play with my young nephew; in fact, the only reason I subscribe is so that I can play games with him as he lives 2,000 miles away. It doesn’t need to be a $60 game or even a $10 game, just something that can be enjoyed by players of all ages (and preferably a game with online play). Thanks.

  • That’s a terrible lineup, for sure. I expected nothing and I’m still disappointed.

  • Why not try a ps exclusive every month?

  • oh wow! 2 games i have considered buying but now don’t have to! absolutely amazing deal again! 2 great months of ps plus games

  • What is this crap? Sony you are killing your self. give us more games 2 games for this subscription is day light robbery. A few months ago we were getting 6 games.

  • bring the price of PS+ subscription down to 10-15$ if this what we are going to get from now on.

  • So i found a way to make PS+ worth it with the changes.

    1. I sold my Vita stuff Sunday (for a cool 3 hundo)

    2. I sell my PS3 next… (although i still have a few key games to finish and i occasionally play fighters with my bro with the ironically free online who lives in Japan. it is also a good blu ray / media centre backup though)

woth those gone the plus subscription rises in value xD (xd for the memes bois)

they have people that play online by the 8 balls, i don’t so much, but that is why i am a sony core fan anyways, narrative driven games. Plus is usually soft on that while occasionally having decent “rentals” that’s what they are guys, included rentals be real, the free / bonus brigade.

  • Sony is not our friend they are. major corporation trying to make bank off us, and fair enough just offer value for money like the console and paid games typically have.

deducting the sub fee off the discounts they offer becomes a wash when it’s not the a list games or items you are after. For me most of the value if having plus is in the discounts and certain times of year are better for this. I still favour physical and buy new releases.

All these straw men arguments about how we want the newest games are horse hsit. Sony could afford to do it with their first party if they wanted to and have done so in the past.

the 2 games p2p online, mixed bag game rentals is going to bother some people, core or casual, so vote with your wallet, put the annual sub on something else. These companies respond to $$$.

Hitman and The Witness are excellent games btw.

  • Hello everybody. Why isn’t there any PS3 or even vita free games this month?

  • Where is my free PS VR game? >:(

    YOU PROMISED.

  • The Surge might be a fine game (despite the combat looking majorly slow and clunky like Lords of the Fallen), but from what I recall, Conan was an absolute mess of glitches and crashes…I hope that isn’t the case and they fixed it.

  • Well seriously disappointed. I am just hoping this a bad april fools joke. If we didn’t need ps plus for online gaming I would not be subscribing to it as the games are awful.

  • I agree with the majority of these comments. I’m disappointed this month. Realistically, I’m not going to play these games. I’m starting to seriously consider not renewing my membership and using that $$ to just buy a couple of games that I know I’ll like and play.

  • I was really hoping with the loss of PS3 and Vita games that the PS4 offerings would get better and more plentiful. Deep inside though, I knew you guys would just use it to pad the profit margins, I guess I was right. Another month of a failed multiplayer game no one wants and a mediocre single player title. I have 0 interest in multiplayer games, the only reason I keep my PS+ subscription is for the free games, I won’t be renewing.

  • already own these games, so I’m getting nothing.
And for anyone saying that these games are free, or just a bonus, no they’re not.
First of all when you pay for a service anything you get with it is not “free”
The movies you watch on Netflix aren’t free, or movies on amazon prime are extra maybe, if all you wanted was two day shipping, however you’re paying for the service.
I, as an adult, don’t play online so I don’t care about online services with plus, I’m just paying for the games, and the ability to play the ones I already got.
I also remember when online services were free on ps, unlike xbox, and find it ironic that the servers people play on aren’t even Sony’s they belong to the game producers I believe (yet again, I don’t play online so not 100% on the way it works)
I would definitely drop plus if I hadn’t already purchased years in advance and/or the fact that I wouldn’t be able to play the games I already got (but that’s becoming less important due to cost effectiveness as it might be cheaper to buy the physical games than pay you monthly to keep them)

If you think Curse of the Blood Moon is bad, you haven’t given it a go or can’t appreciate retro style platformers. I haven’t played that style in ages and I like it. That was the only decent game from that month IMO. MWR I already had. Loot boxes kills the online of a remaster for me. And the other game had no interest. And since I own a PS3, I got one of the final games for its Plus that I had never played… Guns of the Patriots (Metal Gear Solid 4) I have no interest for Conan and I know I wouldn’t progress through Surge, having played Lords of the Fallen, DS2: Scholar of the First Sin, Bloodborne and Dark Souls Remastered. The only game of interest for GwG is the og Battlefront 2. So for this month Xbox wins it for me. Winning the month isn’t based on popularity for me, but what I can get the most from in terms of wanting or intrigue or both.

  • If you’re not going to give us anything else, at least give us a 20% off discount code and let us pick our own games.

  • This is the second month the games are straight out of my ‘wish list’. Thanks Playstation! :)

  • There are so many entitled crybabies in this forum. What do you children think you should be getting for your $6 per month? You better gimme a dozen $60 games for the $70 I spend each year or I’ll hold my breath until I die!

You are paying $6 a month for an online service that also offers discounted game sales as well as a couple of perk games every month. If you find one game you like out of the year, you are more than getting your money worth from PS+

    • Anyone who pays full retail price for games isn’t going to be smart enough to understand what the problem is. They usually use trendy words like “entitled”.

  • Crazymanwalking1

Although im not particularly interested in these games, I’ll definitely try them out if i can manage to pull myself from playing Overwatch lol

  • PSN yall are slippin’ here it is, april 2nd, still cant download the april psn games. Its ridiculous, why continue to pay for a subscription that has 0 benefits AND have to wait 2 or 3 days into the month to get games that microsoft drops midnight on the 1st. Its almost pointless anyway, no one from playstation ever responds. Oh well. Cheers to mediocrity!

  • I swear, most of you act like entitled children who would only be happy if the free games were new, top shelf titles.

    • That is so not anywhere close to what everyone is complaining about, oh I swear some people are so brainwashed….

  • Now hear me out here: PS Plus Tiered Subscriptions!
PS Plus Bronze: Multiplayer and Cloud Saves. $20 a year
PS Plus Silver: Multiplayer, Cloud Saves, and the PS Plus Discount on games. $40 a year.
PS Plus Gold: Multiplayer, Cloud Saves, and the PS Plus Discount on games, and the PS Plus Games each month. $60 a year.
Boom! Simple as that. Unfortunately Sony wouldn’t ever go for that since they know a vast majority of people would go Bronze. Servers literally cost next to nothing to maintain and $20 a year from thousands of people is WAY more than enough to keep them up. Corporate greed at it’s finest.
But still, I want this idea to gain some traction, so pass it around!

  • When this first happened I tried to find out how come there were only 2 games instead of six. The couple of channels I tried failed to have anyone give me the answer. I did come across this line just today:

“If you haven’t tried them, then now’s your chance — they’ll be available until March 4, 2019.
As a reminder, PS3 and PS Vita games will no longer be part of the monthly free games line-up for PS Plus. If you haven’t added the following PS3 and PS Vita titles from the February games line-up to your library yet, they will remain available until March 8, 2019:”

But now I am really wondering if I should renew my Playstation plus membership. I have a large catalogue of PS3 games, having been a Playstation Plus member for 5 years at least, but it doesn’t seem worth playing the asking cost. I’ve got three or four months to go on my membership so this isn’t the end straight away but I am very disappointed.

  • Between the lack of backwards compatibility and downgraded PS plus, we’ve heard your message loud and clear, Sony: you just don’t care about your users. Still there was no need to rub it in our faces with garbage like the Surge.

  • You know a couple measly games coming out on Plus isn’t a very good excuse to have a week without any decent sales right? You know that, don’t you Sony?

  • Reduced to 1/3 of it’s former glory, this service is now a disapointment.

  • Thought i had another year left on my Plus. But it just expired. Good timing with PS removing any value it had. I will miss trying out some fun indies and such. But not worth it anymore with it’s higher price and lower value

  • Conan Exiles is, by far, the worst game I’ve experienced in the last twenty years of my gaming.

  • Do people understand what PlayStation Plus is?

It’s payment for online multiplayer. Period. Full stop.

The free games are an enticement.

If you don’t want multiplayer on PlayStation, go for Xbox & pay $10 more. Yes, price increase is coming for Xbox.

Sony didn’t charge for any online multiplayer for what? Ten years before PlayStation Plus was introduced? While their direct competition was charging pretty much the whole time.

  • totally agree with medenko1975:

VERY bad….from 6 games down to only 2 poor ones.
I will definitely let PS+ expire.

  • Wouldn’t it make sense to include a link to the PS Store in these blog posts?

  • Yeah, gotta love that upkeep alright, where different parts of the service simply not working is a daily occurrence. Brainwashed fool.
