[Polls Closed] PlayStation.Blog Game of the Year 2018

2018 was jam-packed with incredible games, and it’s time to choose the absolute best

Wow! Did 2018 overhear all our praise about last year’s lineup and refuse to be bested? From the word “go” this year has delivered an embarrassment of video game riches. Celeste and Monster Hunter: World kickstarted the cavalcade of hits, and the pace didn’t let up all the way through holiday juggernauts like Red Dead Redemption 2. It was also a tremendous year for PlayStation exclusives, with showstoppers like Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War setting records for the platform.

So, there are a ton of amazing games to look back on for this year’s Game of the Year awards. That’s why we need your votes to help decide the best of the best. Many of the categories below will be familiar from previous years, but there are some new additions to look out for. Multiplayer has been split up into competitive and cooperative as games continue to evolve in the online space. Best Sound Design is an opportunity to shed light on the subtle ways audio designers bring their worlds to life.

Important note: As always, any game that previously won a Platinum Trophy in the “Most Anticipated” category is barred from another nomination in that category.

The polls below are open closed now and will stay that way until the year ends at 11:59pm Pacific on December 31. Don’t forget to tell a friend to vote in the polls as well!

As we wrap up 2018, we here at PlayStation.Blog want thank you for your continued support. We hope you have an incredible holiday, and we’ll see you in the new year to keep the nonstop celebration of video games going.

  • Bungie and destiny 2 has no place on any of those lists whatsoever

    • You’re insane. Destiny 2 is great and a million times better than the first. I hated the first one but tried this one out just for the single player and it was great. Almost vintage Bungie. Destiny 2 deserves recognition for best ongoing game because it’s one of the best out of that awful list LOL Only Rocket league and GT Sport are better “ongoing” games

    • @ HugoStiglitz_420 – Really awful list?…really Destiny 2 after screwing playas all over again?…ha good games there but Warframe wins by far,the support for the game is insane.

  • For the most anticipated game i voted for The Last of Us Part 2
    Naughtydog create masterworks! : )

    • Besides your choice, kingdom hearts and Final Fantasy 7 which I don’t even know if they going to make it and hopefully they won’t screw it up.

  • Firewall: Zero Hour, Astrobot: Rescue Mission, Moss, Tetris Effect!!!

  • Man hard decisions between Sony SMS and Insomniac this year.

  • Great year for gaming YEAHHHH

  • This should have been a vote that happened way earlier. Wtf. Who’s going to see this, and the votes credited by…

  • So playstation is doing their own game awards thing? In that case rdr2 should win their game of the year considering it’s the highest rated game on ps4

    • Nonsense. By that logic, MGS 5 should’ve beaten the Witcher 3. It didn’t despite being a better game, so why should RDR 2 beat a game it’s nowhere near as good as just because it has higher metacritic????

    • Hey the Blog awards have a tiny lil more sense than the blind followers of rockstar so don’t expect that to happen. If there was a Most Overrated category though…RDR 2 would win by far.

  • Marvels: Spider-Man, is by far the best superhero solo game I’ve played in awhile. I was impressed with the graphics and how everything was connected together with the character; Peter Parker/Spider-Man and others around him for instance, MJ and Miles Morales. The story line was absolutely spectacular and beautiful! I loved how there was love, drama, thriller, suspense, and more between the characters. The developers really put their heart and love into this game, the player can tell right away when a game is done with no love, patience, and precision. This game had all three and I’m glad I was able to experience that journey, and will still continue to experience that along the way. I hope that Insomniac can continue the story line and relationship between Peter, MJ and also Miles Morales.

  • The Last of US 2 not on most Anticipated……..Must be farther away than I thought. 2020?

  • How the hell do you not even have Gran Turismo Sport as best Ongoing game? Seriously are you guys that ignorant? It’s a PS4 exclusive for christ sake

  • God of war took all my votes …….it is a total bad ass highly recommended!!!!!!

  • Did anyone put Fallout 76?

  • It’s such a shame that GoW and Spider-Man released in the same year…it’s a bit sad to vote almost everything for GoW knowing Spidey deserved too but gotta be true to what really is.Spidey takes best soundtrack though and so does best sound design,Yuri Lowenthal as Peter and studio for insonmniac.

The graphics category though…damn Sony Destiny 2 and B.O 4 there is a stupid joke, moreover Destiny 2 is from 2017 freakin hell Sony it’s just stupid your exaggeration of Destiny and CoD advertisement which both don’t need any.A damn DLC DOES NOT make the game new.I’m surprised Destiny 2 isn’t on best sports game as well.

Most anticipated as always is a tough one but Ghost of Tsushima takes it.

  • This year was perfect

  • I alway love god of war because my dad brought old and new god of war game but he gave me and later play grow but i never change

  • I really wish PlayStation would allow mods so beat saber could have a more enjoyable experience with custom songs etc the only bad thing about beat saber is the fact that there are a couple of song but not a very broud range and that’s what PlayStation needs to allow beat saber to do and other games so that mods can be a thing in different games like beat saber or fallout 76 making the games more enjoyable for everyone I’m hoping in the near future that will become a possibility

  • I personally really like warframe and hope it could someday make it on top the dev’s are super underrated. Everyone always says it’s a knock off of destiny but it has it’s uniqueness

  • Ugh, I hate these decisions

Spiderman or God of war, spiderman or God of war…..

  • Destiny 2 should have more nominations.

  • Some honorable mentions, only because I like to root for the underdog!

Studio – Larian Studios for Divinity: Original Sin II
(These guys nailed the design and packed so much into one game, they should be a model for other developers. Clearly they poured their hearts and souls into this game. The bar is so high for the RPG genre now, Bioware and Bethesda have their work cut out!)

    Ongoing Game – Gwent
(The Homecoming reboot was divisive and it’s been a bumpy ride over the past year, but the Gwent team is extremely passionate, and they seem determined to make Gwent a best-in-class experience. I’m excited about the new leadership and direction for 2019. Gwent could be a serious contender for this category in 2019. Being immersed in the lore makes the wait for the Netflix show and eventual sequel more bearable!)

Art Direction or Independent Game – The Banner Saga 3
(The final chapter wasn’t as good as the first two, imo, but The Banner Saga is still an excellent game and trilogy. I can’t wait to see what Stoic might be working on next. They know RPGs and they know how to tell a compelling story in an interesting world. They can create beautiful artwork, and bring it all together with fun and strategic gameplay)

  • What about cyberpunk 2077 for most anticipated?

  • God oficina War 4 is they best ,they winner

  • I just love God of war since the day it got released

  • Can we add a category for most disappointing game and have Fallout 76 as the only entry?

  • Studio of the year has to be Capcom. They went from verging on closing to putting out hit after hit. It’s one of the greatest comeback stories in gaming history.

  • Can I please have some v-bucks now?

  • Interesting that Last Of Us Part 2 isnt on the list of most anticipated games. Makes me think that it is still a ways off :/

  • I’m still mustly looking forward to Skull & bones. Kh 3 will be here soon and I need some actual fresh yet better than persona 5’s asthetic game design. Otherwise I’m out for 2019. Nothing Else right now can beat that game. It was like go big or go home.

  • Assassin’s Creed Odyssey for GOTY. I must be one of the few that voted for it, but it’s all up to how much fun each person had with each game, that’s what makes this voting process so diverse. It was the only game that managed to get me to spend over 100 hours on it this year (contrary to last year, where I did so with Persona 5 and Horizon ZD). Also, I hope FF XIV finally gets a little bit of recognition and wins an award since the team behind it just keep delivering amazing content on a three month basis. One month till KH3, yay!

  • Hope Monster Hunter World does well. I really enjoyed it, and played a ton of it with my friends.

  • Great Year For PlayStation Fans! GREAT YEAR FOF PS4!

  • Soul Calibur VI
    Dragon Quest XI
    Valkyria Chronicles 4

Three of my favorite series all came out this year. What a great year for gaming! Can’t wait for Shenmue III!

  • I am making over 7k a month working part time. I kept hearing other people say to me how much money they can make connected so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my existence. This is what I do……. www.Tag30.com

  • Most Anticipated.. surprised that The Last of Us Part II is not an option.

  • Ok, I just want to know who made this list of games. Some of this games shouldn’t be in the list at all.

  • Yo detroit has my vote, cause honestlty rdr2 was just a good story mode with a whole lot of nothing
