Extended Fortnite Cross-Play Beta Launches on PS4 Starting Today

Following a comprehensive evaluation process, SIE has identified a path toward supporting cross-platform features for select third party content. We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community’s continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution.

The first step will be an open beta beginning today for Fortnite that will allow for cross platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems. We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective.

For 24 years, we have strived to deliver the best gaming experience to our fans by providing a uniquely PlayStation perspective. Today, the communities around some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players. In recognition of this, we have completed a thorough analysis of the business mechanics required to ensure that the PlayStation experience for our users remains intact today, and in the future, as we look to open up the platform.

This represents a major policy change for SIE, and we are now in the planning process across the organization to support this change. We will update the community once we have more details to share, including more specifics regarding the beta timeframe, and what this means for other titles going forward.

So. Will it have any kind of an identifier on the user to show what platform they are playing on? How are we going to know if you’re playing against someone that’s on PC or Xbox? Can you filter out any platform? I wouldn’t want to play against PC players because they have an advantage with the keyboard and mouse. I’m not really a huge fan of this cross platform play, it seems like there’s so much potential for things to go wrong or so much more drama that’s going to be created due to more and more people playing together. I dunno.. I’m just kind of skeptical of it all, haha!

Why would they allow cross play between PC/Mac and Xbox/PlayStation? Those need to stay separate. Crosspaly between Xbox, switch, and ps4 would be great.

  Fortnite already allowed PC/Mobile crossplay with PS4, now Sony has allowed Xbox and Switch(?). There is an option to turn off crossplay in the settings.

Just wanted to say Fallout 5 is coming out people haven’t forgot what u did to us on mods for Fallout 4 and skyrim xbox gets it all we get internal assets only its gonna be interesting since bethesda said Fallout 76 will have mods hopefully majority just get it for xbox because sony will just give ps4 little to no mod sopport again

I would absolutely buy a copy of Destiny 2 for PS4 if I knew my progression from PC could be carried over. I prefer to play on Playstation at home, but travel for work so I have to go with playing the game on the laptop whether I’m away or at home. Sharing progression across platforms would mean I’d spend 75% of my time in the game on Playstation.

All that should be done is give us a console update that adds new privacy options for cross play, example if we get far enough to allow messaging cross platform we could have a privacy feature to prevent cross platform messaging if we don’t want it, could also be a feature that allows us the player to choose if we want to play games cross platform like instead of the hassle we have been dealing with up to this point, there should be an option to let us choose if we want to do it or not. But In the end I’m just glad it’s finally starting to come around

  There is an option to turn off crossplay, but the messaging stuff is something to think about in the future. Hopefully in time there will be privacy/security settings that account for crossplay specifically so those that want better control over their play experience can do so without issue.

I invited my friend on Xbox and we joined no problem but we couldn’t talk to each other. We both have mics and neither of us were in a private party we were just doing game chat so why didn’t it work.

I’m happy this is finally happening, now I can actually play with some of my PS4 friends on my PC while playing with my Xbox friends. People going around saying “It already had crossplay so what’s the big deal?”, this literally paves the way for more players on PS4 as Sony was getting a bad rep from this (for Fortnite). I for one wasn’t going to link my account to PSN because of the whole account lock they implemented. How can you claim it’s the place to play but you are tied to one console and mobile? How is players having less flexibility better for gamers? This change allows Sony to still tout that it’s the best place to play while actually allowing you all the options the competitors have. This is a good day and I hope this leads to more games going crossplay (like fighting games and the like).

I don’t see the need for Cross Platform Multiplayer but I’m happy for everyone who plays that way. I hope for the future of at least Cross Progression among all the things.

Lets hope RDR2 is opened up across platforms also, and the great firewall of playstation can finally be removed!

Ditto Jax and Daxter and Racket and Clank Reboots for PS4 – so many great games on PS2 and PS3 should work on the latest platform for generations to come!

This is great! Finally! I stopped playing Fortnite on PS4 after I found out I couldn’t use my account on other platforms. I hope this goes well and this opens the door for Playstation, Xbox, Nintendo and PC to allow more games like Rocket League, Minecraft, shooters, fighting games and also sports games. Especially fighting games. Some fighting games player bases are small enough already and being segregated by platform doesn’t help neither. And for the people complaining about facing PC players (in shooters for example), hopefully game devs will implement the matchmaking options to play with other consoles and PC or not.
Thank you, Sony for at least giving it a try!

I think this is a fantastic idea in multiple ways since i have alot of psn friends! The only worry is that if this does come to be, will my epic be broken? I play on Xbox mostly but on switch pc and mobile(s9) I am on 7tg grade but this is a big deal to me aswell!

According to twitter, they are implementing a system to combine your purchases if other accounts were made to play on other platforms. It reads it will happen in November. Well played Epic.

This is an embarrassment for the business. You just don’t know when you’re being played. Years ago when you guys asked for it, Microsoft didn’t yield. Yet now Microsoft pushed this false narrative and despite being behind in sales by well more than 50% you cower. So what this looks like is that, and mind you that this is supposed to be a Japanese platform, when a Western=White game that in the long run is a flash in the pan, you change policy. Yet your own Japanese games aren’t given fair treatment. One of your own Western games promotes homosexuality, The Last of Us Part II. No problem right? Yet a Japanese game that promotes harmless heterosexual fun, Omega Labyrinth Z was not only refused localization by you but in the process managed to lose the exclusive to Nintendo completely in the form of Omega Labyrinth Life (interesting the word, “Life”).

This guy here is fastly approaching the mark of being the weakest leader in PlayStation history which oddly enough is unheard of. Microsoft and Nintendo to a degree are laughing at you right now and rightfully so.
