Extended Fortnite Cross-Play Beta Launches on PS4 Starting Today

Cross-platform features are coming to PS4.

Following a comprehensive evaluation process, SIE has identified a path toward supporting cross-platform features for select third party content. We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community’s continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution.

The first step will be an open beta beginning today for Fortnite that will allow for cross platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems. We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective.

For 24 years, we have strived to deliver the best gaming experience to our fans by providing a uniquely PlayStation perspective. Today, the communities around some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players. In recognition of this, we have completed a thorough analysis of the business mechanics required to ensure that the PlayStation experience for our users remains intact today, and in the future, as we look to open up the platform.

This represents a major policy change for SIE, and we are now in the planning process across the organization to support this change. We will update the community once we have more details to share, including more specifics regarding the beta timeframe, and what this means for other titles going forward.

In the meantime, please stay tuned for more information via PlayStation.Blog and social channels, including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

  • Bout time , now please add custom/external assets for fallout 4 mods

  • WTF, NOOOOOOOOOOO

  • Bravo! I really hope that this means Warframe will get crossplay support for Switch, as I would love to be able to play my save on PS4 Pro on my tv and on my Switch when I’m on the go! You’re doing the right thing here, Sony, keep it up!

  • Seriously? You guys would rather complain about not having a new jak or ratchet than congratulating Sony on CROSS PLATFORM MULTIPLAYER!? Shame

  • If my fellow PlayStation gamers are happy im happy! Keep bringing more features to the PS4 Sony Interactive Entertainment!

  • Bring this to all games, not just Fortnite! This could help a lot the competitive in Overwatch.

  • So how do i play with xbox people??

  • Yes thanks Playstation

  • This is a step in the right direction for everyone involved. But really, if you are going to open up cross play, please also change your stance on the Bethesda mod issues that you didn’t support when Skyrim Remastered and Fallout 4 came out.

Two wins are better than one. Can’t wait to possibly share my progress for Destiny 2 between platforms… I can finally play with everyone else if that’s the case. Please make it happen.

  • “Your account can not play on this platform. Please see our help website for more information.” Thanks, Sony.

  • I knew it would happen. Shawn Layden said so himself, way back.

  • Well done Sony! Thank you for listening.

  • Make changeable usernames

  • how do i link my ps4 and xbox one x account so i can have my xbox skins on my ps4 now

  • I tried to log in with my PS4 account on my Nintendo Switch, but it still says I cannot log in, why is that?

  • YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS\

  • Honestly thank you Sony this is the best way to spread the PlayStation brand if we can talk to Xbox users on cross-platform we can convince them to switch to PlayStation by talking to them about the great PlayStation Exclusives.

  • Please don’t like the “select third-party” titles be too select, okay? I understand wanting to protect your business but allowing all gamers to play together on stuff like Rocket League, Paladins, Minecraft, etc has a lot of positives.

And I’ll be more likely to buy on PS4 than switch if both are cross-play, but will buy on switch if it’s the only one to support it.

  • Oh my god I’m soo happy let’s hope they keep it like that and they don’t regret that decision.

  • This is terrible News. i really wish you stuck with your guns Sony. I don’t want to play with Toxic gamers from Xbox and Nintendo. if they wanted to play with us.. buy a god damn PS4 ! that’s the way things always been like when i grew up.

this is a sad sad day. you Fortnite losers got what you wanted and now you can finally shut up.

and i know there’s people out there probably saying ” too late I don’t support Sony anymore cause they didn’t want too OR too late i sold my PS4 to play a Fee 2 Play game on another console cause i am a big idiot “

    • WTF this whole comment is toxic

    • I kind of agree with part of your comment. I really don’t want to be playing against PC players (they have far more advantage with keyboard and mouse) – Xbox and Nintendo (mostly xbox) have their own community and So does PlayStation. I like them being separate for the most part. I Enjoy not having to deal with the fanboyism and drama that is so present on Xbox. I know for a fact that there’s going to be nothing but trash talking about which platform is better and which one stinks and bla bla bla in the in-game chats.

At least it’s optional for now.

  • It isn’t completely cross platform yet, but I mean face it, we’ve really only wanted this for fortnite

    • Not at all just for Fortnite, I personnaly don’t like it. ROCKET LEAGUE fans are waiting for this since a long time, and the game did crossplay with PC before Fortnite (because of realease date).

Also, Minecraft and GTA fans will appreciate it, as well as CoD and Battlefield players, just to name a few.

Lastly, it will help a LOT of F2P online games, AND, mainly, will allow us to play with PS4 players on PS5 when it will be out. ;)

  • Just tried it out. YES! it works! Thank you Sony!

  • Am I now able to transfer my skins from my xbox account to my ps4 account now? If so, how can I do that? Please someone answer

  • Good news for the PlayStation platform. Remove the one negative / con in the list of features of PlayStation when compared to Xbox or Switch or PC or Android or iOS is now on the path of being removed.

  • Are we gonna have to update our system or the fortnite app to get the cross platform feature

  • I personally bought my ps4 only for God of War
after that I started to watch other games that could have fun, ok a couple of games here is what I really enjoy, for example, DS serie or GTA.
But what is missing out on Ps4 is one single game, namely Tony Hawk Underground 2 (ps2)
Yes, I could buy SKATE or something, but I just do not want to. THUG2 was a game I grew up like Rathet and Clan or Crash Bandicoot.

    :)))

  • Holy cow, I really was thinking about jumping ship just cause I felt so strongly about cross play. I play paladin’s and honestly felt like on PS4 that game has a small community, matchmaking can take up to 10 mins. this benefits games with small pools of active users. Thank You Sony Good Job. I appreciate what you are doing with this and the benefits that this provides to games that struggle alone on your platform but may thrive together across multiple consoles. #Longliveplay #hashtag lol

  • Well done Sony, keep supporting your competition by providing their dead online ecosystems with the PlayStation userbase.
Before someone says this doesn’t affect me because I don’t pay a Sony tax to use my internet on PS4. WRONG

PS4 needs more system sales not LESS. Less systems sold = less games as proven by WiiU.
    Less games affects me directly.

Sony dropping the ball hard this gen.

Decided to play Tokyo Xanadu the other day and I couldn’t load my save file because the free dlc I had downloaded was not installed. What was really going on was that my internet had disconnected and lo and behold, always online DRM for some stupid 5 healing potions DLC was preventing me from loading the perfectly fine SINGLE PLAYER savefile. As soon as my internet returned the save file worked fine with no fresh installation of DLC.
At no point was I informed free DLC recquired always online connection, otherwise I wouldn’t have downloaded it.

Can’t wait for PS5 to double down on always online DRM, digital only games and non functional D-Pad/1.5 hour battery life controller.

  • This is great news. I hadn’t been expecting Cross Platform Play to be fully implemented until the PS5, so this is a neat surprise (and a smart move to try and dispel some community perceptions before launching the next platform).

That said, I really have no interest in Fortnite. Hopefully it makes its way to Minecraft fairly soon, because I have all sorts of friends on different platforms for that.

    • Yeah, and the nice plus to this move is that when PS5 will be out, early adopters would be able to play some online games with their friends on PS4. :)

  • AT LAST SONY!

This had been, for me, the single biggest disappointment with my PS4 , to not be able to game with my friends and it was the sole reason I had decided not to buy another PlayStation in the future.
If you’re going to allow cross play. I’m back in.

  • Yay! Now pls add crossplay for everything. And allow name changing

  • Im happy sony has found a way to do this. Im especially glad that they may have found a way to do it business wise for themselves. Regarding games. i think your all dead wrong. While i love bath jax and daxter and ratchet&clank. ive played those games.they were amazing but now lets move on. Stop looking backward. i see comments like these everywhere that they should bring back older games but why? Why, when you have saw many creative developers that could be making new IP’s do you want them to focus on old games. i know the power of nostalgia but you guys have to let these games go to make way for the new experiences.

  • Be careful what you wish for. I won’t be playing PvP games where I’m forced to play against a keyboard and mouse.

  • Does this mean I can use my existing account on the Nintendo switch (similar to mobile) without there being any complications?

  • Great idea! But can we sign into Xbox accounts on ps4?

  • Finally

  • Great news, though apparently, I can’t unlink my PSN ID from the ghost Epic Account that it was recommended to attach it to until November!

  • Thanks Sony

  • Finally, too bad for my friend who bought a PlayStation so he can play with us, though thats what Sony wants.

  • Please remove the forced Epic Account attachment to the PS4 Only

  • Too little, too late Sony. You proved that you’re greedy and treat your costumers like wallets. For you this is just a marketing stunt. I bet Epic was threatening you with a shut down of Fortnite on the PS4 and you were begging not to.

    • Were you saing the same thing about M$ when they refused to do crossplay last gen? Because it’s a fact, and Sony was pushing crossplay first, btw.

    • Why thank you for the unasked history lesson. For luck the PS4 is not only “the best platform to play Fortnite” at, it more is the best platform to play games crossplay now. I’m not really trying to defend one or another, didn’t clap any hands on Microsoft nor will do it in any way for Sony now. And why the Dollar sign in MS? Do you think Sony isn’t as greedy as Microsoft? Don’t answer, it’s a rhetorical question. Thanks

  • Next should be The ability to change your username, Kinda how Xbox has it.
Another thing should be backwards compatibility.
these are the only thing that Xbox has superior to the Playstation.
Other than that, Playstation would be amazing!

  • I love Fortnite on PS4 Pro in all its UHD glory. But I wouldn’t want to give my main Epic account to a company like Sony who has demonstrated the ability to prevent me from enjoying my game on the go with my Nintendo Switch or play with my nephews on their Xbox One. Furthermore, being dishonest about why we were disallowed to play with any platform, changing the excuses multiple times as most lies are unravelled, causes great distrust from me, a long time fan of PlayStation.

I loved the PlayStation that was up front and honest during things like outages and cyber attacks. I hate the PlayStation that feels it’s okay to lock up its userbase in a cage and pretend it’s for the user’s own good.

  • I quite possibly could be the only person to not care about cross-play. Let the people change their PSN names, for the love of

  • PLANTS VS ZOMIBIES 2 cross play PLEASE.

And fix PSN issues, I am not DarKTooNLinK17 :-)

  • Thanks for getting into this Sony, I understand it take time and a lot of tests to add new features like this…

…but I can’t wait to play ROCKET LEAGUE with people from all around the world, no matter on what they play! :)

…and it’s also and awesome and good marketing move for PS5, since we should be able to play a next-gen version of a game online, with players from a previous-gen, wich is…simply AWESOME.

  • Finally! This is the correct path forward for PlayStation in the industry. Adapt and be better than the others. I started playing Fortnite on Switch, but now that I can play it on my favorite console with my friends from other platforms I’ll jump on it more often.

Hopefully Sony won’t go back on this decision and Fortnite is just the first game to offer cross-play between other platforms.

  • yessss

  • Great news! Rocket League next please!
