PS4 System Software Update 4.50 Features Detailed

Starting today, those of you selected for our beta program will get an early peek at some of the new features coming to PS4 with our next major system software update, version 4.50 (codenamed Sasuke). If you signed up for the beta and were chosen, you’ll receive an email with instructions on how to download and get started.

Even if you’re not participating in the beta, we still wanted to give you a quick glance of the key features that will be rolling out with this update. We’re refining the user interface of PS4 even further, and adding highly requested features like external HDD support and custom wallpapers.

External HDD Support

It’s easy to upgrade the HDD that came with your PS4, but if you’re still looking for more storage space on the console, we’ve got you covered. With this update, you have the option to store content to an external HDD. Just plug a USB 3.0 HDD into your PS4, and voilĆ , you now have more space on the console.

PS4 System Software Update 4.50 external HDD support

This is compatible with HDDs up to 8TB in size. You can download and install applications directly to your extra storage, and the saved contents are easily manageable through the settings menu.

Also, all the applications saved in the external HDD will appear in the Content Launcher of the Home Screen so it’s easy to keep track of what apps you launched recently.

Please note: user save files are still stored locally on your PS4 HDD. Only games and applications are stored externally.

Custom Wallpapers

This update adds the ability to set your favorite in-game screenshot as the background image for PS4’s home screen. Drop-shadows on text, and the option to dim the Function Area, will help keep the system icons and texts on the home screen clearly visible even if the background image you selected is super bright.

You can also edit screenshots using Photo Mode in Sharefactory to make your one-and-only custom wallpaper.

Quick Menu Refresh

As you may know, in the last system update we overhauled the PS4 Quick Menu feature (the menu that appears after a long press of the PS button on DualShock 4).

This update brings additional improvements to make it even more accessible. Now the Quick Menu will cover even less of your gameplay screen, and you’ll be able to access handy Party features via Online Friends, like creating new parties, inviting friends, and joining parties, without transitioning to the separate Party app. The goal is to keep you in the game — and not stuck in menus.

Simplified Notification List

Before this update, the Notifications app had a variety of tabs on the left-hand side, like Game Alerts, Downloads, Uploads, and more. We’ve condensed all of the tabs to a single simplified list, making it easier to see all of your notifications all at-a-glance.

You can also quickly access the Notification settings from the Options Menu to turn off or customize which pop-up notifications appear on your screen, so you’re only being notified about your top priorities.

Post on PlayStation Network Activity Feeds

We’re adding the ability to post directly into the Activity Feed, which appears in a variety of places across the console, including What’s New. Under What’s New, you’ll see a new option to post things like text, screenshots, and gifs directly into your Activity Feed. You can also tag games or other users to make sure they don’t miss your post. It’s a great way to show off your greatest triumphs.

Tying into this new feature, Live from PlayStation will show screenshots that users uploaded to PSN as a Public Activity, so you can show off your best gameplay moments not only to your friends, but to users around the globe.

3D Blu-rays on PlayStation VR

If you’re a fan of 3D movies, and you own PlayStation VR, we’ve got good news — this update adds the ability to view 3D movies in stereoscopic 3D directly on the PS VR headset. Grab some popcorn and enjoy!

There are more features included in 4.50, so make sure to keep an eye out for additional info, including launch timing, in the weeks to come.

  • Still waiting on being able to change/switch usernames or handles. If I can change my username on every single account (Banking, xbox, email, forums) and even change my name with the government, I should be able to change a 13 year old username

    • Learn to DBA. Once you understand what a database Key is, come back and explain why.

Also what happens when you change your bank account number and try and use your old Debit Card?

      (SPOILER)

They have to be related to each other, and a key is what the entire table is used to reference other tables. Mistakes happen and this was one of them. If rumors are true it will be fixed.

    • I wasn’t trying to be smug, or snappy, or anything, I was helping my kids with my homework, so I wrote it like that. But the point I was trying to make was, that it seems Sony centered the PSN on Online ID and things like Trophies, Game Saves, Friends lists are keyed on the PSN ID. So if they are changed, those things are lost. So SOny needs to engineer a solution so that they are not lost. If rumors are true, they are indeed working on i.t

  • Sony stepping their game up. Love all of these features but the 3-d PSVR support and external HDD are highlights for me.

What kind of limits will there be with using the HDD across multiple systems?

  • Can we also update our home screen, hide certain apps, or alternatively, add some to the main carousel?

For example, I’ll never use the web browser, so I’d like to hide that icon permanently off my main screen (keep it focused on games).

On the other hand, I use YouTube a lot, so I’d LOVE to add that icon next to my games, instead of constantly hitting ‘TV & Video’ then scrolling down (its constantly changing spots, too, which is annoying).

  • I have a question, does this also mean we could also use usb 3.0 flash drives as well?

  • I… I… got into a beta! All of those chicken sacrifices finally paid off! :) Can’t wait to try it out.

  • I’m in the beta now. Time to see what this update will do!!

  • I really like this update, but I really wish you guys would make it so we can change our gamer tag. I’ve invested so much into my current account and would hate to start anew and buy everything all over again. If you do end up allowing name changes, I hope you will also allow spaces and up to a maximum of 15 characters.

  • And yet after what 8,9 years, still unable to change usernames, even for a small fee?? Come on now

  • Is it an open Beta? If so, how do I sign in?

  • When’s name changes

  • Will the external be tied to that system only?

  • Great update! I am loving the extra external HHD support. My 2TB Hard drive is almost full on my PS4 Pro. I hope in the next update they add the ability to download our movies and tv shows bought from the PSN store to our hard drive like the PS3. Sadly I had to retire my PS3 and miss that feature on the ps4. Streaming my videos sometimes lag when watching on My Video app that’s why I want it on my hard drive. If they add that I would buy more videos in the PSN store but for now other services are working better for me.

I also would love for WAV or PCM audio support for my music collection. Flac is alright but its a headache converting all my WAV collection. I do miss my Playstation 1 digital collection and I hope they add them in the PS4 in the future.

  • I’m not home from work yet and I have my beta invite, can anyone confirm is the external hdd Support is live on beta? I was gonna get one on my way home from work. I remember during the last beta not ALL features were available yet.

  • How do u sign up for beta’s and stuff like that?

  • I cant update my system software

  • I think there’s a larger elephant in the room we need to address; PSN users’ inability to read! Why comment, if one doesn’t thoroughly read the article? Personally, advice given from someone who can’t even read thoroughly seems futile.
Let’s receive the update, then make evaluations on improvements and whatnot. Geez…

  • Will this support NTFS or FAT32 file formats?

  • This is a HUGE step in the right direction. Now we just need:

    Ability to name change
    Store MP3s on the HDD
Delete trophy lists at ANY percentage. I have lists sitting at 1% or 2% I want gone.

  • Here’s the thing that I’d like to know. Considering I already bought the Nyko Data Bank for my PS4 and the 3gigs hard drive space is more then enough for what I need now, I’m curious if this new update means that YOU CAN ACTUALLY WATCH VIDEOS FROM FLASH DRIVES AND UPLOAD YOUR OWN WALLPAPERS DOWNLOADED FROM THE INTERNET. I’ve only read that the “custom wallpaper” is nothing but manipulating screenshots from your own games. Big whoop.

  • Upload a screenshot? How about a bit of customization? See: “https://share.blog.us.playstation.com/author/ivagah/” for details.
    Upvote it!

  • The external hardrive update is awesome but i am still waiting for the update of changing your username !!!

  • We also NEED 3D Game support in the PSVR.
So All the Existing 3D Games, can Be Played in stereoscopic 3D directly on the PS VR .

I’ve been waiting for this since the Release of PSVR, Where is iT?

  • Im so happy I was chosen to Beta the 4.50 software. I just picked up my ps4 Pro and Im hoping for the best results! Thank you Sony for having such a great console. Ive been a fan boy since the start, my XB1 just sits and collects dust. I still run ps3, Vita, Im keeping my ps4 and my Pro is just a thing of beauty! Cant wait for more upcoming updates, Ill keep my eyes peeled for the next greatest thing, well after I grab a pair of the Platinum Headphones!!!

  • 3D Blurays in PSVR is an awesome surprise! If only we got stereoscopic in regular games thru psvr. Gravity Rush 2 in 3D thru the PSVR would be wallet opening.

  • Wow Wow Wow. An update is now my game of the year.

  • I’m getting pretty bored of my online id name….

  • Great update, but won’t allow me to connect to my router after I updated. Anyone else having this issue?

  • Hello! Do i need a 3d tv to play the 3d blu ray in my psvr? Thanks

  • awesome update, glad they added the external hdd feature!

  • Awesome update! Can’t wait for it. Changing gamer tag would be a godsend. I hate mine. I understand this is more of a schema/infra issue rather than System Software but anyway..

New UI looks like it’s going to be very slick :-)

  • Love that the PSVR is finally getting 3D Bluray support. While it would be nice to have SBS video file support, what I’d really like to see is support for 3D games? I would love to play some of my 3D PS4 games through the headset, like Zombie Army Trilogy, Daylight, etc. Even if it’s not in full VR, the 3D would still be nice.

    • Generally we should be able to play all kinds of 3d contnet …and not only from blueray’s .Let’s hope that they will do that on anther update soon …

  • Why doesn’t my USB 3.0 drive work after the update?

Also, why wasnt the menu lag addressed?

  • Great update!

Can we please get proper alphabetization of external audio files (via USB)? Everything is all over the place!

It would be nice if we could also block notifications while watching media (Netflix, YouTube, Media Player, etc.) as they interrupt movies and I don’t want to have to remember to disable/enable Notifications every time I watch something.

YouTube app also seems to free constantly now. I try going into subscriptions and going through all my channels and it freezes on the same channel every time so I have to force close the app (manually so I can’t send a report) and reload it.

Very thankful for your work so far team!

  • The update is still in Beta and players may experience issues, I am happy to test new things & explore new experiences :)

  • And what about Boost Mode for PS4 Pro?

  • Wow! I can add an external HDD but I STILL can’t use my Bluetooth headset????

  • Downloading! I’ll need to get a white external HDD to match my glacier PS4 lol

  • Sony, you sly dog, please tell us more about this PS4 Pro Boost feature!

    https://www.engadget.com/2017/02/03/ps4-pro-boost-mode-beta-software/

  • this awesome. especially the external hdd hardware . and custom wallpaper. good job sony :)

  • Would be nice to be able to pin folders to start of the game list.

  • Should have been on the PS4 when it came out. But better late then never.

  • @PlayStation Good job! Keep looking at that Quick Menu please to add/continue streamlining our gameplay and options. A popup message from the quick menu would be cool if possible. AND make sure you add the leave party option to what you’ve just updated…leaving the party is usually more in the middle of something than joining into one. I hate to do this to you but…Where is Onimusha on PS4? (I’m being nice too…)

  • Can’t connect to my router after the update.
Is anyone else having this issue?

  • I got the beta.. are there any instructions or walkthroughs?

    • It was in the email, on how to install. The post here highlights some of the changes. There is a link to a forum for where you can discuss the firmware, and identify issues you have with it.

  • Now i wish I would have signed up to test the PSVR 3D

  • Now if PlayStation can fix the PSN problem with having us to pay to play online that would be great thannnnks

    • I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one. And honestly it’s much better that it’s a paid service now anyways – in terms of security, stability, functionality etc.

  • Still waiting for those 3 extra USB ports so I can plug in my psvr and hdd and headphones and charging cable.

  • When are we going get the ability to record clips with the push of a button so we dont have to be taken out of game play?

  • So excited for this! Thank you guys for listening and implementing all these awesome and much-requested features

  • Got my 4tb and 6tb I’m ready to go. Thank you Sony
