PS4 System Software Update 4.00 Out Tomorrow

The next major system software update for PS4, version 4.00 (codenamed Shingen), will be available tomorrow. This update brings a refreshed system UI, Folder organization, updates to the Quick Menu and Share Menu, Library improvements, and much more!

We detailed a number of the new features making their way to PS4 prior to the beta program last month, but we wanted to share some additional information on other changes that you’ll see after updating your system.

Quick Menu — Music

In addition to updating the Quick Menu to make it easier to access without leaving your game by having it cover only a portion of the screen and making it more customizable, we’ve also added several new items to the menu. One new addition to the Quick Menu that wasn’t featured in the beta program is an enhanced Music section to allow you to discover, play, and control Spotify without needing to open the app.

From the Music section of the Quick Menu you’ll now be able to play, pause, skip, shuffle, repeat and save songs. The Music section also allows you to discover recommended playlists for the game you’re playing and view your saved Spotify playlists and songs. When you select a playlist, you’ll be able to see all upcoming songs and choose to play all, or select an individual song to listen to from that playlist.

The PlayStation Music team and Spotify have been working with your favorite game creators to create playlists to enhance your gameplay. Follow PlayStation Music on Spotify to get the latest gaming playlists first.

PlayStation 4 Pro Updates

In anticipation of the release of PS4 Pro on November 10, 2016, we’re adding a number of features that will support the system’s ability to output high-resolution content. This update will enable the following on PS4 Pro:

  • 1080p streaming for Remote Play on PC/Mac and compatible Xperia devices
  • 1080p streaming for Share Play
  • 1080p 30/60fps live broadcasting on YouTube
  • 1080p 30fps live broadcasting on Twitch

High Dynamic Range (HDR)

When we announced PS4 Pro and the new slimmer PS4 last week, we also announced that all PlayStation 4 systems — back to the very first console sold in 2013 — would be HDR capable. After updating your system to version 4.00, you’ll see HDR settings in the Video Output Settings and be ready to enjoy HDR gaming and entertainment content once it’s available on any PS4 system you own. Of course, you’ll need an HDR compatible display as well.

What’s New

What’s New has been redesigned and now includes more information about what your friends have been doing on PS4.

The left column includes the new Activity Feed, which has larger images and easily accessible options to like, comment, or reshare. The right column includes sections for Now Playing, Trending, Players You May Know, and Who to Follow.

Content Info Screen

We’ve given a similar redesign to the content info screen, which you can access by pressing down on a game tile while on the home screen. You’ll be able to easily select from a variety of options to view a game’s Overview, Trending media, Friends and Communities, Activities, and related PlayStation Store content.

Data Transfer to New PS4

In order to make it easier to get all of your data from one PS4 to another, especially if you upgrade to PS4 Pro, we’ve added the ability to transfer data over a wired LAN connection. You can transfer games, user info, and saved data. Of course, you can re-download content and transfer saves through the cloud, but the LAN transfer should be much faster and easier.

Those are just some of the more prominent additions making their way to PS4 in this update, but there are a number of other refinements to the system software overall. Please enjoy!

  • Can we restore a backup file made on the original ps4 on ps4 pro?

  • Ya….I’m gonna buy a $1400 brand new TV to see brighter brights and richer colours…./ends eyes rolling

  • I wish you would introduce some sort of family sharing. This household will soon have 3 ps4s pretty soon and its ridicilous that each family member cant have their own profile and play any game we have purchased digitally on either one of them.

    • They limit it to two, and in this case one Primary and the other one being forced to be online for license authentication do to the fact that when they had 4 on PS3 back in the day. People were using it to get around buying games.

Unfortunately you are really only gauranteed one copy when you buy it. You can restore a license or use a disc on another console, but having them all run and work at the same time would allow people to take advantage of it again.

    • Well Apple does it in iOS with up to 5 family members so Idk why Sony can’t do the same.
Netflix lets you set up several profiles on pretty much all the clients you want.

Besides, I can have all games installed on as many PS4s as I want throughout the household, so long all of them are using my profile. I would just have prefered if other family members could use their own profiles instead of mine.

  • Please add the ability to check the status of Downloads from the Quick Menu.

  • I wish you guys would add the ability to edit your PSN ID. That’s all I care about, really. Also, online play should be its own fee or free.

  • How long will it be untill we can change our PSN names? Xbox allows it whenever you feel like a new name, Steam users can do it mid-game

    • Steam does and does not. Your visible ID can be changed. Your original that you created stays in the background. The also added a tagging system so if you use a name someone else has as the visible ID, you can look and see a specific number tag set to you as to how many other people are using it.

Xbox on the other hand does, but at $10, I am willing to keep mine.

  • I will not be adding 4.0 have had nothing but troble game closing a crashing for no reason system shuting off no problems with any of that after i took beta off

    • it was a beta of course it sucked thats why you HA dto test it DUH… do you know what a BETA is? hint its not a demo… the full version shoudl have those problem fixed… assuming you reported them like you weer supposed to

    • Yeah I know it s a full version released early and yes I did and they never replied so they dont care

  • The lack of external hard drive support for storing and playing games is a massive oversight that is already a significant problem with the PS4, it’s really the biggest problem at this point, and it’s going to be a bigger problem going forward with the PS4 Pro. Game sizes are already massive and with PS4 Pro and 4K they’re going to get even bigger. Please fix this problem immediately.

    • Uhhh imo I Dont think the games sizes are gonna change that much cause most if any games are gonna be in native 4k maybe some like simple indie titles or something like that but it will be upscale to 4k and the fact of the matter is Sony has made it super easy to install up to a 2tb hard drive in the current models and 1 to 2 tb come with the ps4 models idk about the ps4 slim cause I was not interest enough to look into but that should be enough to last and when you have that much space in it you can also just delete some games not really that much of a big deal to me but I’m not everyone feels this way of course

  • Folders!!!!! This was the one feature I was looking for. With all the PS+ games and the dozens of games I own it was getting difficult to sort through it all. I’m also glad Beta/Demo can be separated!

  • I will be getting the PS4 Pro later.
But the things that disappoint about the PS4.

    1. Not using a SATA III (or SATA II) 3.5″ HDD. Instead Sony is still sticking to the slow SATA II, 2.5″ HDD. It’s annoying because I want at least 2TB of storage and I can’t get that. There’s only a Seagate HDD in the 2.5″ form factor and Seagate has high HDD failure rate. And the other option is Samsung SSDs and they’re very very expensive in the 2TB or 4TB range.

    2. I thought the PS4 would be like 6 Terraflops? Xbox Scorpio will have about that I think.

    3. No 4K BluRay drive.

And this is a problem how you guys are advertising 4K HDR so much since very few people have 4K TVs right now and even fewer have 4K TVs with HDR.

Can we finally get the ability to alphabetize our gaming library?
Can we get the option to delete trophies from our PSN account from the Vita, PS3, and PS4?

  • Should we expect NTFS support of external HDD for movies playback bigger than 4GB

  • How big will the download size be?

  • Is it possible to track how many hours i have spent in game ? like steam ? it would be a nice feature to add to the playstation

  • I am holding out for a PS3 update soon.

  • Awesome always excited for a major update can’t wait for my Ps4 pro, have it on lock for Nov. 10

  • I’ve very excited to check out HDR!! I got a Sony 4K with HDR this year and can’t wait to see games that support it.
The other big item for me in this update is Folders!
Thank You everybody for you hard work.

  • Okay, so this maaay be a severely stupid question but will my copy of PT be able to transfer over with the LAN transfer?

Losing that forever is pretty much the only reason I wouldn’t wanna upgrade to a Pro!

    • Yes. It fully copies everything over and removes it from the previous console.

    • Technically, there’s a PS4 backup file available online that’s only around 5-6GB that someone made, and the only thing in it is P.T (I believe…). So if you lose the game for any reason, or have an HDD failure, you can always download that backup image and use it as a starting point for a new HDD. You would restore that backup file onto your new HDD, ignore the original user’s PSN ID (since you won’t be able to log into it), add your PSN account, restore your licenses (this will unlock P.T. for use on the system, since you have the license), then you can delete the account of the user that created the backup image. Someone was smart and made this available online so that P.T. can never be lost for good.

  • For music in the quick menu will it support music off of a usb or will it only support music from spotify?

  • Boss updateI Can’t wait to get folders and the new quick menu looks hot…. but man, really bummed to hear about the mod support issue with Bethesda. I’m sure after PSN had that breach way back when that most of this is to curtail such things but nevertheless. it’s disheartening to hear it can’t take off (and how it might set a precedent on future mod support).

  • I’m glad they showed us what the “XXX liked No Man’s Sky” notification looked like. We won’t likely see it ever again.

  • This is not turning into a good few weeks for Sony. They state for the players. We whom have bought the consoles and games are left out with the actual decision making. The pro is an absolute joke.

  • I just wanna say thank you letting me be apart of the beta it has been awesome I have had no problems no bugs or glitches has been real smooth and can not wait for the full update to go live tomorrow again thank you

  • At what time update will avalable for downlode

  • Nice. Loved the Beta. Especially the folders feature.

  • Are you guys finally going to fix the slow right turn bug of the R stick..affecting alot of players ??

    • I don’t think it’s a software bug but a hardware glitch. I have run into it a couple times with new and used controlers sometimes turning right and sometimes turning left. Have you tired buying a new controller

  • Does this include dual direction audio? If not please add it! I want have the choice to play audio through my headset AND TV at the same time, this will make it much easier for content creators to make videos. At the moment when I am recording I can’t listen through my headset and send audio to my elgato simultaneously.

    • There are plenty of wireless headsets that use the optical port for audio so you can have game audio coming through both HDMI and the headset. Ive got the Turtle Beach Stealth 400 headset and it works amazing, as well as having 2 separate volume controls for game audio and chat audio.

  • On the overview screen please add game trailers and game description.

  • Is it possible that i cant start my predownload of FIFA17 and NBA2k17 because of the update?

  • Custom Wallpapers please!

  • Question: Can we just replace the PS4 Pro HDD with a PS4 HDD and call it a day or do they both use different versions of the 4.00 Updates etc? Or if I just replace HDD’s will the PS4 Pro not be able to read everything?

  • Will ps vita and PC remote play get their update tomorrow. Only downside of the beta is you can’t remote play whilst on it. I miss playing while doing things on my PC in the other room :)

  • THANKS SONY, HOWEVER…Many of us are still anticipating an “official” storage solution. With my other current-gen consoles, I never had to worry about storage as I was able to get an external hard drive for both my Wii U and Xbox One from the start. But since my PS4 is my favorite place to play games, I probably have triple the games of them both put together with nowhere left to store them. 2.5 HDD’s are last gen. They have NO place in current gen. 2TB is their current limit. I have Playstation Plus and almost 3 years of free and purchased games. I hoped the PS4 Pro would have a 3.5 drive but I’ve heard no confirmation. I have the Nyko databank but unlike my PS3, whenever I switch out the hard drive on my PS4 I must do a wired reconnect of all controllers. Going into the 4th year with more amazing games on the horizon, Playstation VR and bigger 4K enhanced games we really need the storage dilemma solved directly by you, not Nyko or some other third party. Please catch up to current-gen on this issue.

  • Hey Sony how about updating the ps4 pro drive to play 4K media for starters also your PlayStation app needs to be updated to control Netflix,Bd menus and also please add backwards compatibility not that ps now copout thanks.

  • I don’t want to stream 4K media with current bandwidth caps and I also want 4K discs to play on my ps4 upgrade

  • What type of HDR will be supported? HDR10?

  • This stuff is cool and has been long awaited / requested. I’m going to have heaps of fun with this, so thank you for the hard work in implementing these features.

Moving ahead, do we have any idea when or if Sony plan to implement a PSN ID name change feature where we’re able to retain all of our trophies and account purchases? This feature has also been requested heavily and myself and many others would happily front up $5-10 dollars to be able to change our PSN ID.

Furthermore, the ability to hide trophies we don’t want to see on our local systems would be great as well. While I know I can hide them from other people, I still have to look at the handful of games my son booted up and earned a couple of trophies on whenever I glance through my list. I feel that this is something I and many others feel we should be able to have control over.

Even better, if Sony let us delete trophies regardless of completion % – accidental deletes could be prevented by having the system force you to input your password manually every time you want to delete trophies. Of course, some may regret their decision/s later but ultimately some responsibility needs to be owned by the consumer and the EULA could be updated to address this.

  • External hard drive support and sling app not only ps Vue

  • Yay, more useless crap to fill my hard drive with… thanks so much.

  • All I care about is expandable storage. I want to plug in a USB hard drive. I have that stupid Nyko Data Bank. Please tell me we’re going to be able to plug in external hard drives. 2TB internal is not enough. Not even close.

  • When can I start transferring content between my Vita and PS4 again? And while I’m at it, where’s my PNG screenshots and premium avatar support? Or any update that actually adds features and not just fixes loopholes?

….Or even any signs that you care about us Vita owners?

  • Add a feature to invite people from the play station menu to your game or party without sending a friend request

    • You can invite them to a party and they can join through there without needing friend requests. However, if they have setup their privacy settings in a certain way, they might not be able to receive the invitations.

  • Wow I didn’t know HDR will be in 4.00. Was it in the Beta? When the update is up can we enjoy HDR on PS4 on previously released games like Uncharted 4 or do we have to wait for the devs to update their titles?

    • We have to wait for devs to update the game. But most ps exclusives like uncharted 4 the last of us until dawn and even black ops 3 will be hdr compatible by the time the pro is realeased.

  • Man every time I read these comments it’s like a Parks and Rec town hall meeting. Loved the beta, this will be a great update with some much needed features.

  • The redesigned What’s New section has been one of the most criticized point of the beta program.

Again Sony ignores its customers input.

  • Question, so I’m assuming Ps4 Pro records in 1080p obviously.which is great, 1080p and 60 minutes is perfect for my needs. But will it be 60fps recording like in streams? Would be all I need for that feature on the pro. Also I’ve heard
    60 minutes recording now
60fps for youtube streaming only and shareplay if it wasn’t already. So no 60fps recording on normal ps4?

  • Should just eliminate the what’s new page. It’s pretty annoying tbh.

  • All the people crying for psn name changes. should have thought more seriously about the name they chose. I am not looking to change my screen name.

  • Why exactly can’r we play our games off of an external hard drive it’s not that hard to make happen.

  • So basically these features
1080p streaming for Remote Play on PC/Mac and compatible Xperia devices
    1080p streaming for Share Play
1080p 30/60fps live broadcasting on YouTube
1080p 30fps live broadcasting on Twitch

Are not coming to regular ps4 only exclusive to ps4 pro?

    • Correct. All the background recording and the streaming is done by a secondary processor. They obviously made this CPU more powerful in the PS4P, so it will be able to handle 1080p. There’s no way to change this on the original PS4 console.

  • I can’t help but notice you haven’t made a statement regarding your nonexistent support for mods. What gives sony
