Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration Revealed on PS4

Hi everyone! We just announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration will launch on PS4 October 11. We’re thrilled to share this news with you.

When we were planning the PS4 version of Rise of the Tomb Raider, our very first imperative was to outdo anything we’d done before, such as our definitive editions. A mere “Game of the Year” wouldn’t satisfy us, or our fans. We knew that our PlayStation community both deserved and demanded more than that. So we’re working with our long-time partner Nixxes Software to make this version truly special.

First, whenever we ask you what DLC you’re interested in, “new story” is number one on the wish list. Talking it over with our Franchise Creative Director, Noah Hughes, he immediately turned to a franchise favorite: Croft Manor.

While shown previously only in cutscenes in the campaign of Rise of the Tomb Raider, the Manor represents more than just a place. It is Lara’s legacy. It’s an incredibly important part of her story and the franchise, and like many of you we have fond memories of it from the classic games. So we’re excited to introduce the all-new “Blood Ties” chapter, which will let you explore Croft Manor and unlock its mysteries in a new story mode, then defend it against an undead invasion in “Lara’s Nightmare.”

The Manor also offered a great opportunity for us to investigate the possibilities with cutting edge VR technology. So for the first time in franchise history, you’ll be able to play “Blood Ties” in first-person through Lara’s eyes!

Next, we’re adding a new online co-op expansion to Endurance mode. You and a friend can team up to raid tombs and battle for the longest survival run to stay at the top of the leaderboards.

To celebrate Tomb Raider releases through the years, you can outfit Lara with a re-envisioned version of the cold-weather outfit and the Hailstorm pistol that was featured in Tomb Raider III. In addition, a special card pack will allow you to replay the main story with five classic Lara models. You won’t believe your eyes when you see the original low-poly Lara model in glorious high fidelity Rise of the Tomb Raider cutscenes.

For our hardcore fans, we’ve added a brutal new “Extreme Survivor” setting, which increases the difficulty and strips out all of the checkpoints. The only way to save your game is to forage enough resources to light campfires and survive from one to the next!

Finally, along with Endurance mode, all previously released DLC will be included, such as the three hour story addition Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch, and the Cold Darkness Awakened pack which forces you to combat waves of infected predators. Not to mention all of the outfits, all of the weapons, and a ton of Expedition Cards. You receive everything in one package!

We can’t think of a better way to celebrate with all Tomb Raider fans, and to thank you for being on Lara’s 20 year journey with us. We’re excited to share more details on the new content in the coming months as we gear up for the launch of Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration on October 11!

See you online in Endurance mode!

  • I have to agree with all the people here saying that this game is not worth the full price, even game of the year editions come out cheaper than their originals, Sadly I will not be buying this game, not till its a lot cheaper, there is so many more games coming out in October that ill rather buy at full price than Tomb raider, this is disappointing.

    • While I won’t argue that you should buy this, I do want to point out a couple games.
      Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition
      Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition
Dying Light: The Following Enhanced Edition
Dragon Age: Inquisition Game of the Year Edition
All these games released at $60. These are the ones that popped into my head immediately. There are plenty more. GOTY versions of games are generally NOT cheaper than a new release, “when they first launch”. They tend to drop in price quicker, but no, they do not normally release cheaper.

  • I have been waiting for this since the day it came to Xbox 1. No more! In 3 months I can finally play it. In my opinion, 1 year old game doesn’t mean it has to be at lower price. They can wait for the price to drop later. The performance really doesn’t matter much to me. As long as the canera is not like ‘Lichdom Battlemage,’ I’ll survive. The most importance is the content. 60fps won’t keep you pushing thru a boring game. The VR is a plus because I will finally be able to see great details of the mansion. I wonder if the backyard with all the gymnastic equpments are available, or the secret reading room surrounded by fish tank. Hmmm…

  • Hurry up october!!!

  • i will be buying this next year used. just to teach square enix a lesson about this full year exclusivity B.S. they will get no money from me

  • How can you make GOTY edition when the game wasn’t even GOTY? Liars

  • this better be $40 Canadian or i will pass , WHY because they gave us the middle finger all to sell out for quick cash and yes i am mad and don’t forget what they did.i bought the first game on my PC , 360, x1 , ,ps4 and beat it on all and why to support them so we get a sequel and instead i get a kick to my gut them selling exclusive timed BS and worse go read there letter when they announced this its the most sick vial lie i have seen from a dishonest company . great game played a bit at my cousins but there is a line no matter how bad i want to play it after there greedy move this better be $40 or $50 Canadian at most because these extras are a joke and worse how once again there exaggerating this junk like it is some great thing . ooo harder difficulties and costumes lol its pathetic when you need to hype that junk up instead of it being in the game normally

  • Seems like a reasonable offering. Thank you for adding enough content to justify what is almost certainly going to be a full pricetag. Still not a fan of the year delay between versions, but at least it doesn’t appear as though you’re planning on ripping us off as well :)

  • Nope ……. $60.00 for a year old game. I pass. I would have spend that money if it was out a year ago. But I got Uncharted 4 and back log of games to keep me busy till a price drop. I won’t spend that much money for an old game. It’s your fault SquareEnix for being gritty and make it exclusive to Xbone for a year. When this game hit $20.00 – $30.00 price range then I’ll buy it.

  • I definitely want the game, but there is no way in hell I’m paying $60. I’ll wait until I can get it for $25 just to spite you for making it an Xbox exclusive for the Past year.

    • Don’t blame them, blame Sony for not being willing to match Microsoft’s offer.

Publishing is expensive. If a company offers you a big pricetag for a timed exclusivity… it’s not greed to accept it, it’s stupidity not to.

If I was running a food company and a grocery store offered me a 100 thousand dollar 6 month exclusive deal on a single item, I’d be stupid to not take it because chances are I wouldn’t get 100 thousand in profit in that time from the other store.

In the end, these companies ARE running a business, and whether the decision is nice to us or not, the business making money has to come first. So if this IS that big a deal to you, Sony’s to blame for not making a good enough offer, not Square for accepting the profitable offer they got.

    • “Don’t blame them, blame Sony for not being willing to match Microsoft’s offer.” Seluhir on July 19th, 2016 at 1:12 pm

Can’t tell if trolling or not

  • TROPHIES?! What about trophies?!?
Please don’t put all 113 from the original full game plus DLC’s, plus who knows how many more for the “new” stuff they added, under the requirement for the Platinum.
    Please.

    • Haha i was wondering that as well, i’m close on the xbox, but they keep adding new DLC which is messing up my % since i don’t buy DLC.

  • A bunch of y’all are really salty about this. Hell, they’re throwing in an artbook and all the DLC released thus far. I personally think it’s a good deal and will be getting it this October 11. The wait has been excruciating and so I’m happy PS4 players will finally be able to play this game!

  • why are people complaining about this possibly being $60. Its not merely a year old game. If that were the case, I’d agree but this is essentially a GOTY edition with all previoiusly released DLC as well as a slew of new content. Think of it as $40 for base game and $20 for all that additional content that did not launch with the original release. $60 is a great deal for a package like this

  • I was very excited when this game was announced but when I learned that it will have time exclusitivity with Xbox One, well,
it changed everything for me. I already played this on PC, Yes CD, on PC because I cannot wait to play a game that should be on PS4 but no certainty of release date until this day. Now that you announced it, I think I’ll have to pass as Final Fantasy XV is my priority at the moment and a game in February end next year. I’ll wait until it becomes around $25.
PS4 owners, already waited, and I don’t mind waiting again.

  • @Havok83 #62

Xbox players got to swim in this gumbo for a year majority of the playerbase from Xbox and PC got to play this game for a whole year. We’re just now getting the leftovers. it’s coming to PS4, i can still hear the voice saying Xbox Exclusive on that Microsoft stage before the ROTTR Trailer Popped up. The fact that we had to create an uproar just to get it to a timed exclusive is ridiculous.

I will never forget the betrayal…and nether should you.
you can look at it as many ways as you want but this game is still 1 Year OLD. and not worth 60$

Never Forget: They were going to make this a Xbox Only game. When Tomb Raider started it’s roots with us. I would never pay full price for this game. i will play it when it goes down to 20 or flash sale of 10$ but this game doesn’t deserve my full wallet.

Square Enix though will get my money for FF15 though. can’t wait for that.

    • and SFV remains exclusive to PS4 as do a slew of other releases. Thats just how things work out. No one was betrayed

  • Guys, give up any hope of playing this game at 60fps on PS4, unless you’re talking about PS4 Neo. There are tons of benchmarks available – Rise of the Tomb Raider happens to be a commonly used benchmark program – and they all show that the hardware equivalent to the standard PS4 definitely isn’t enough to meet and keep anything like 60fps in this game. It doesn’t matter that this is the same developer who built TR Definitive; that game had much lower quality assets and effects

  • With all the DLC plus VR content, I will pick this up at launch. I’ve bought every Tomb Raider game in the past for Playstation. It was very disappointing not to be able to buy this game day one for my PS4. Good to hear it’s finally coming with added content.

  • I’ll buy it If all the contents are free for PS4 owners

  • I loved the Tomb Raider reboot to play it first all the way on PS3, and then again on PS4 with the definitive edition. The sequel going Xbox exclusive really stole any excitement I had for it. I received it as gift for Xbox 360 but other than trying out first chapter or so didn’t play much further because it starts out in a way that really didn’t hook me and I kept feeling like I am playing an inferior port of the game.

Later I got the game free when I bought a gaming desktop, and then again free when I traded in my Xbox 360 for Xbox One. Still haven’t played even 1 second of either of those options.

Not sure why I would care about this really late entry of Rise of the Tomb Raider finally on PlayStation when I haven’t cared about it in all the time leading up to it.

  • I already played the game but with all DLC, VR mission and trophies I´ll gladly get it again. Great stuff!

  • There’s still a lot of anger amongst Playstation fans about the Xbox deal so I can understand why some say they won’t buy the game or will buy it 2nd hand as a way of punishing Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix.

I’m probably going to wait for a price drop if it launches at full price because I want to send a message to SE, but I will buy it new because I still want to support CD.

I’m no more in the know than anyone else, but I suspect CD weren’t exactly thrilled at the prospect of going Xbox exclusive. Most devs want their games to reach as wide an audience as possible so if someone was to tell me there were people at CD that were disappointed or frustrated with the Xbox deal, I wouldn’t be surprised at all. Cutting their biggest and most loyal fanbase was probably no more fun for them than it was for us.

So while it was probably SE that made the decision, the ones who will likely suffer from PS4 players turning their back on Tomb Raider are CD and of course us, the fans.

So if you love Tomb Raider and are interested in this game and would have paid full price for a PS4 version last year, then consider buying it. Maybe wait for a price drop, but if you can, support the devs.

  • For those interested in the game, all the DLC coming with it would still likely be cheaper than trying to buy it on another platform plus adding the DLC for the $60.

I personally am not interested since I did get it on Xbox One and the game just did not hit that spark with me. So I sold it already. I have zero interest in getting it again despite the new modes as I could not force myself to finish the first time I played.

That pretty much sums up what I have to say about it. The game just was not for me.

    • Also exclusive deals really do not bother me. It happens all the time and is not as horrible as some would make it seem. Thereason they often do it is to get extra funding that they might not get in order to try and make a better game from the start. Not sure if it really helped this one or not, but a lot of people did like it. I would likely have double dipped if I had thought it was worth it. Unfortnately they probably picked the wrong company to get backing from, but Xbox One really needed a system seller and Sony already had Uncharted 4 on the way.

If that is part of your reasoning I would recommend calming down on that issue. I am getting Dead Rising 4 this year and likely again on PS4 next year when that version will likely come out.

Really wanted to enjoy this game after Tomb Raider (Reboot), but acting, story and gameplay all felt like it really went down hill from the last one.

  • I am looking forward to playing this on my PS4 but I gotta say I’m kind of underwhelmed with the additional modes you’re adding. Really … zombie horde mode? That’s profoundly unoriginal and not particularly relevant to the brand? I do like the idea of being able to co-op with a friend but I’m so beyond tired of zombies that I’ll take a pass on that.

  • Almost an year, happy it will be coming out. At least Sony TR fans can enjoy.

  • Great news. I’ll pick it up once it’s 30 dollars, it’s been a year so a couple extra months won’t be much. You’d have to be crazy to buy it at 60 with the Xbox One version going for 30 next to it.

  • Nice upgrade to the preorder i already made! :D

  • Good things come to those who wait.

  • So how much is it?

  • Confirmed 60 USD for all asking..

  • It will be $29.99 by the holidays, why rush?, had to wait a year already, NMS till then..

  • Oh! It will be released on my birthday!

  • Will buy this used if ever. They will not get one cent profit from me.

  • I’ll buy once $20 last game was great but for shame on the late release for ps4 owners. I’d advise anyone to not day one purchase this just to show that this practice os unacceptable.

  • I will get this God willing

  • not sure whether to buy this new or not, the package is a good start in making up for the pointless moneyhatted delay and the disgusting treatment of one part of the fanbase that’s been with the series since it’s inception. You’re not only screwed PlayStation fanbase, but PC fanbase as well. Two platforms with the series from the start with that moneyhat.

It’s disgusting .I think I just answered my own question. Used it is. Next time, don’t sell yourself so cheaply SE.

  • I bought a PS4 and had a Xbox360 before that. I loooove Tomb Raider, grew up on it and still is my favorite game heroine of all time… I bought the 360 version because I found out it be a timed exclusive. Now I’m very excited for the release! I was thinking about Croft Manor so for them putting this in is like nostalgia going back to my childhood, the only thing I really want from square Enix is to make Lara slowly learn some gymnastic skills and have an option to dual wield even if it takes upgrading handguns all the way or the skill because to me that’s what makes Lara! The two pistols/handguns and acrobats, I love the new Lara but I want her to carry on those traits till the end :)

  • EverythingOnFire

Great news! I’ve had this pre-ordered since January, and I can’t wait. Easily one of the my favorite gen8 titles. Really looking forward to finally trying the Baba Yaga DLC.

  • Made it well past 30 not dying from playing it. I’ll wait and grab it cheap or better yet, I’ll buy a used physical copy. Wasn’t happy about the timed exclusive deal Crystal Dynamics made, hope it was worth it.

  • The way I see it is this. As Playstation owners and Tomb Raider fans, we got cheated and cheated hard when this game came out. It was supposed to be across all current gen platforms and PC and it wasn’t. There were plenty of people who didn’t buy this for their Xbox One or PC on principle. Lara was on the PC first but it was the Playstation that made her and we all know it. If this doesn’t do well on the Playstation in October, it will send a clear message to Crystal and to Square. You, my friends, ****ed up. You threw us, the fans who made Lara into what she is today, under the bus. You turned your back on your fans for a paycheck when you could have made so much more with us instead of against us. I will buy your game. I cannot guarantee others will, but I will. This goes one of two ways, your game does horribly and you see what a colossal mistake turning your back on us was or your game does amazing and you realize how much more you could have made with us instead of being against us.

  • Nice! Reading the comments here there sure are a lot of pathetic whiners. As for price, it is a new (ps4) game and comes WITH all the other platforms’ Season Pass content included, plus some VR support for those into that. So if it is a full price game so be it. Boycott it if you must, wait for it to be on sale if you want, but I for one will be buying this when it comes out. I’ll show support and through that support get the play a great game without waiting any longer and (if enough gamers do likewise) show them that they could have made more money without the deal with MS than they did with.

  • Forget Tomb Raider what we really want is a remastered version of the PSone classic Soul Reaver!

  • Everyone should ignore the game on release and wait for the price drop. It’s the only way they’ll learn the lesson. There’s plenty of other games out around the same time

  • For first time I will SKIP a Tomb Rider title. Why? Because they skip the PlayStation gamers at launch.

… and because is a one year old game

  • For those of you complaining about the price, even though its packed with all current current, upcoming content and more than likely the last of it. Go amazon, if ur a prime member all pre order games are $47.99 :) Otherwise stop whining and wait another six months for the price to drop to $39.99, you’ve already waited a year. I do all my pre orders through amazon i save 12 bucks, its delivered release day and I don’t have to deal with gamestop :D

    • Yeah forget Gamestop. Good point about Amazon Prime having that 20% deal on pre-orders but I go through Best Buy. They have the Gamers Unlocked Club which knocks off 20% on new games. You don’t even have to pre-order. As long as it’s a new game as in not pre-owned, you’ll pay $48 for a $60 game. Even better when the game drops to $40 you’ll only pay $32! So all these gripes about paying “too much” for a game are most likely coming from gamers that shop at Gamestop exclusively and just don’t know anything else. All I know is I’ll probably get this game day one and pay just $47.99 + tax! I’m also a big TR fan since the beginning and was kind of bummed about the timed exclusive issue but I’m over it and ready to finally play this!!

  • I’m boycotting it. I understand exclusives but timed exclusives is just scum. MS are welcome to it and their dying fan base.

  • So excited Rise of The Tomb Raider is coming in October what intrigues me is this “we’re adding a new online co-op expansion to Endurance mode”

  • If there doing vr support then they have no choice but to hit 60fps sony have said they wont publish any Vr games that runs lower then 60fps

  • Sorry Lara, nobody cares.

  • Sorry I will not buy your game Crystal Dynamics

  • the people who want it should do them self a favor and wait for a price drop
    don’t waste your money

  • wait… i thought this game was released almost a year ago
