PlayStation E3 2016 Recap

We have just concluded the PlayStation E3 Press Conference for 2016 and if ever there was a year dedicated to thrilling entertainment experiences, this is it. This year we unveiled a stellar lineup of extraordinary games for both PS4 and the upcoming PlayStation VR. We showed incredible new games including Days Gone from the SIE Bend Studio, the new Spider-Man from Insomniac Games, God of War from SIE Santa Monica Studio, Death Stranding from Kojima Productions, and Resident Evil 7 biohazard from Capcom.

Other featured titles from SIE Worldwide Studios included the highly anticipated titles Horizon Zero Dawn, Detroit: Become Human, and The Last Guardian, which I’m delighted to confirm will launch on PS4 October 25, 2016.

We also confirmed that PlayStation VR will launch on October 13, 2016 in North America. And what is a new platform without content? In the press conference we unveiled unique PS VR experiences, including Farpoint from Impulse Gear, Star Wars Battlefront: X-Wing VR Mission from Electronic Arts, and Batman: Arkham VR from RockSteady and Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment.

Perhaps I should also address the bandicoot in the room. My t-shirt choice for the keynote at PlayStation Experience in December caused a bit of a stir. So you can imagine how thrilled I am that we worked with Activision to bring one of PlayStation’s most celebrated characters, Crash Bandicoot, to PS4. The Crash Bandicoot Remaster will contain Crash 1, Crash 2, and Warped, fully remastered for PS4. Speaking of our partners at Activision, PlayStation continues to be the home to one of the world’s biggest franchises with the upcoming launch of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

Believe it or not, I’m only scratching the surface on E3 this year — you’ll find more details below, and we’ll be adding updates throughout the week.

Before I sign off, I want to thank you for your support. When we launched PS4 in 2013, we made a promise to put gamers first and I am so proud that we have continued to build on that promise and bring you entertainment experiences only PS4 can deliver. Let us know what you think about the show this year and thank you so much for continuing this journey with us.

Hey everyone! Jay and Tim here from High Horse Entertainment. We’re absolutely thrilled to announce that our debut title Disc Jam is coming to the PS4! If you miss the intense, competitive action of the old coin-op classics, Disc Jam is here to scratch that itch! For those of you unfamiliar with the project, Disc Jam is a multiplayer arcade sports title that pits 2-4 players against each other in a unique combination of air hockey and tennis. Players scramble to retrieve and throw a glowing disc while unleashing devastating abilities and defending variable-point end zones. We’ve spent the last 10 years developing the online components for Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, and Tony Hawk. With Disc Jam, we’ve leveraged that experience to deliver fluid and fast-paced gameplay, even when your opponents are thousands of miles away.

Insomniac Games
Today at PlayStation’s Press Conference, we revealed our new Spider-Man game coming exclusively to PS4. (Surprise!) …. From a personal and professional standpoint, this is a dream come true. I’ve been an avid Marvel fan all my life. When I first learned Insomniac was approached by our long-time friends and collaborators at Sony Interactive Entertainment with the opportunity to create a blockbuster Spider-Man console game experience, I practically ran into Ted’s office professing my passion for Spider-Man — along with a desire to serve as creative director. Fortunately, there are many more longtime fans and professional admirers of Marvel at Insomniac. From comics to films and TV, Marvel has a stellar reputation for unique characters and storytelling filled with personality and humor. Those are tenets we value deeply in our own craft. Detroit: Become Human
Quantic Dream
Inspired by our short called “Kara” back in 2012, Detroit is a neo-noir thriller set in the near-future city of Detroit. Androids, who look exactly like human beings, have replaced humans in most tasks: they are workers, babysitters, gardeners, nurses, teachers, clerks. The story of Detroit starts with an unexplained incident that begins to affect the Androids. Some disappear without any explanation, others have unexpected behaviors and strangely show signs of emotions. The rumors of “deviant” androids start spreading, but no one seems to know what’s really happening… Read the full PlayStation.Blog post here.

Batman Arkham VR
Rocksteady Studios
The switch from screens to headsets was a fascinating creative and technical challenge for us, as it has inspired us to really focus on Batman’s detective skills and find new ways to use them. We all feel that we’ve ended up creating an amazing new Batman experience that is both complementary and a counterpoint to the epic grandeur of Batman: Arkham Knight. This time around we’re telling a highly focused, very personal story entirely in first-person. Batman: Arkham VR is an intense murder mystery in the style of the classic Batman comic books, but with a strong dose of the dark psychology that the Arkham games are well known for. Capcom announced Resident Evil 7 biohazard, the next major entry in the famed Resident Evil series, today during PlayStation’s big E3 2016 press conference in Los Angeles. While Resident Evil 7 draws from the series’ roots of atmospheric survival horror, it also delivers a whole new level of terror. In the classic Resident Evil games of yesteryear, players braced for fear in the first-person via the creepy door-opening scenes, and Resident Evil 7 ramps up that tension with an immersive first-person view and a photorealistic graphical style. team ok LLC
Winner of the BAFTA Ones To Watch Award in 2015, Chambara elegantly reinvents hide and seek in a high-contrast world. Players hide in plain sight by camouflaging against like-colored areas to ambush each other in thrilling and stylish duels. Chambara invokes the glory days of couch multiplayer because we believe there is tremendous value in the interpersonal connections that can be forged through that kind of play. We’ve seen those connections forged at the many events we have exhibited Chambara at across the country. We are thrilled to announce that USC Games Publishing and team ok will be bringing Chambara to PS4 on July 26, 2016.
— Kevin Wong // Chambara Project Lead, team ok LLC

AlienTrap Games
An ancient floatilla of derelict hulks drifts through space, ripe with valuable alien technologies just waiting to be salvaged. Even though the alien inhabitants are long dead, cybernetic security systems lie in wait to shred any intruders. Empowered by a contract of privateering, and a surly mech-suit bristling with ordnance, you must plan your boarding action, load munitions, and blast your way through the alien wreck to destroy the Security Core and get paid! Cryptark is a plasma-scorched 2D sci-fi shooter, and all of us at AlienTrap Games are excited to be showing it off at E3 this year. We’re certain that Cryptark’s aggressive firefights will get some smiles on the showfloor, but there’s more depth beyond just the flying shrapnel. As a scrappy mech privateer, everything you do is financially orientated. All those shells and rockets cost money! Achieve the obscure objectives set by your shadowy employers, and increase your rewards. Just don’t get fragged, or you’ll be left holding the bill. Go into the red, and your tenuous government contract will be terminated! Cryptark will be bringing its unique blend of action combat and “space-pirate business management” to PS4 this fall.
— Jesse McGibney // Creative Director, AlienTrap Games

Dear Esther
The Chinese Room
Back in 2012 Dear Esther pushed forward the boundaries of game design and broke the mold in storytelling — not bad for a project that began as a Half-Life 2 mod. We at Curve are bringing it to PS4 this summer with added Director’s Commentary mode, redefined controls for modern consoles and Trophies to unlock throughout the game. For the first time, PS4 owners will be able to explore the mystery of this remote Scottish island. There’s a lot of questions to be answered: What is the significance of the aerial? What happened on the motorway? Is the island real or imagined? Who is Esther and why has she chosen to summon you here?
— Jonny Merritt // Producer, Curve Digital

Drawful 2
Jackbox Games
The game of terrible drawings and hilariously wrong answers returns. Three to eight players use their phone or tablet as a controller to draw weird things like a “pitcher of nachos” or “death by trombone.” Then everyone — even potentially an audience of thousands — tries to guess the real answer. Drawful 2 includes new features like the ability to add your own user-generated prompts to make even crazier custom games with your friends, as well as expanded tools for streaming including censoring players. Drawful 2 is a go-to party game that everyone can play and enjoy, from the team behind Fibbage, Quiplash and You Don’t Know Jack. We are happy to announce the release date is coming up on June 21!

M2H & Blackmill Games
Anxious for a WW1 shooter? Verdun, the first WW1 FPS game is coming to PS4 on August 30. Over the past year we had lots of requests for a console version from the Verdun community, so we started fine-tuning the game with Abstraction Games for the console version. We distracted the community with several free expansions on the PC, ones that of course were in favor to expand the WW1 realism and Western front for all of you. We hope this surprise is not only exciting for the Verdun community, but also for all you curious PlayStation players! For those that haven’t heard about the game yet, Verdun is a multiplayer first-person shooter set in a realistic World War 1 setting. The game takes place on the western front between 1914 and 1918, in one of the bloodiest conflicts in world history. The developers were inspired by the infamous Battle of Verdun France in 1916. The game offers four distinct game-modes: Frontlines, Attrition, Rifle Deathmatch and Squad Defense.

  • I feel stupid asking this, but was this the entire e3? I saw on my ps4 they have like a day 2 and day 3. Are those just re run days of yesterday’s? Or is it going to be showing completely different reveals? Just wondering bc I feel they showed enough to get me psyched already lol. Thanks!

  • Thank-you Sony for playing the press conference in my hometown of AZ! It was probably the best E3 I’ve ever seen. And to have it on the big screen? SO EPIC!!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!

  • Good entertaining show. Really liked the orchestra and games shown. But the show seemed short and ended abruptly without a climax.

    • No, not at all. I’m not a Kojima fanboy. Sure his games are good, but do you think he makes these games all by himself? No, but he sure likes to take all the credit. When have you ever seen him put his team ahead of himself?

  • So excited for all these new games, first E3 I actually was hyped for.

  • Congrats to Shawn and his team for bringing the class and putting on a great show.

  • Will the Resident Evil 7 demo ever open up to ALL PS users or will it remain a PS Plus exclusive?

  • What about ps vita ??

  • Darkest Dungeon?… Eitr?… The Tomorrow Children release date?

  • Are you serious !? Im a Vita Owner so NO, Sony DONT care about their comunity.. They care about your pocket, they need to take your money by any means necessary.. And then you have the “Air-3” …

  • Yakuza O!!! want a date!

also good conference. probably one of the best I’ve seen from Sony.

  • Big question I have about The Last Guardian Collector’s Edition. Can you tell us the size of the statue that’s included? Hard to judge from the pictures online.

  • That was the Greatest E3 Sony Show of all time thank you SIE Worldwide Studios keep up the great work.

  • Detroit, horizon zero dawn, the last guardian, gravity rush 2 all games I can’t wait for. Days gone is also looking interesting.

  • I love what PS is working on, but I was wondering if the PS4 can interact with PS2 games? The PS3 has a few games and I think there are a few PS2 games that the PS4 has but I really want to play Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets, and Prisoner of Azkaban on my PS4. Its just a suggestion.

  • Days Gone will be released on December 2017, confirmed

  • Hey guys, I hate to be THAT guy, but we’re a new gaming media outlet that is looking to expand and E3 has been our first week of exposure. We deliver in depth analysis and report facts only, no rumors. Later this year, we’re launching a bevy of new original shows on our website but for now if you guys want to, you can support us here,
and here, . We do give aways and starting next week will be featuring fan art for E3 games on our pages. will be up later this month. Any support we get is helpful and the passion I see in the Playstation community makes me think you guys won’t let me down. Thanks in advance.

    • Playstation’s E3 press conference absolutely blew us away. We still can’t get over the live demo combined with live music. So fantastic. God of War and Spider-man were my particular highlights of the night.

  • I was hoping for last of us 2 or any naughty dogs title.

  • Awsome show really enjoyed it soo looking forward to play Horizion…great show Sony loved the music!!!

  • I’m excited as hell to play the new God of War. I was excited for Resident Evil 7 until it was revealed to be a 1st person game. Now I’ll just have to put my enthusiasm on hold until RE8 and hope they don’t ruin that one too.

  • VERDUN!!! Thank you so much Sony! We have been waiting so long to hear from the Devs for the game and now we know why. Will it be possible to transfer accounts from pic to ps4 at all? Just curious… I everyone should get VERDUN haha it’s so good

  • bibleisafable666

I am so excited to finally see a release date for The Last Guardian!!! Better yet, it releases on my birthday! I know what I’m asking for!! Also, am I the only person who is still holding out hope for some good PS4 turn based RPG’s? I love turn based RPG’s…but unfortunately it looks as thought they are soon going to be gone forever. :(

  • GOD OF WAR BAAAAAABY !!!!!!!!!

  • I am amazed and not in a good way that Sony completely ignored the PS Vita.
A single new AAA tittle, probably, would be enough to make the current owners happy.

Does Sony think that PS Vita owners will invest in their VR device after what they did with Vita and PS TV?

I’m not buying it and I will make sure that people around my circle of friends don’t buy it either.

    • Im a Vita Owner.
I agree and going to do the same think..

    • Ps vita just got odin sphere and severed, sony has said they don’t develop games for it anymore, just sold your ps vita if you don’t want it, it’s unrealistic to want sony announced game for vita in it’s e3 conference. If you scared ps vr will be abandoned just wait 1 years to see if the device sold well and supported by sony.

I have ps vita oled and I like it, to me vita is jrpg and indie machine.

  • i think every think perfect , my over all rating 9-10 am sad for just one point most of the great game in development hope we can hear soon thank’s for the great works guys keep it up

  • Thanks for the great show, but when is gang beasts coming out I’ve been waiting for that game to come to ps4

  • it’s a shame that there’s non-existent support for PS Vita. it was cool that Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was on the Vita. SONY ought to produce more games from Japanese developers that make those gorgeous anime-style games from companies like Atlus and so many others that produce Otome games, Visual Novel games, Action-Adventure, Role-Playing, Dating Sim games, lots of more fighting games like Persona and BlazBlue, platformer games, 2D Sci-Fi Mecha games, Tactical Role-Playing games inspired by Final Fantasy Tactics, and LOTS and LOTS of Spaceship Shooter games, there’s so much potential to resurrect the PS Vita, and there ought to be TONS of American games of various genres for the Vita as well. SONY, let Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 pave the way for more great games; DAMMIT be a steadfast competitor to the Nintendo 3DS, as there should be only room for just 2 handhelds in the market anyway!! GODDAMMIT SONY bring out Tekken 7 for the Vita soon, Dood!! BRING the DAMNED handheld from the grave

    • Well it’s dead Jim. Sony will not make PSVita great again. Only things we’ll see are not from Sony’s internal team since they’re all focused on PS4/PSVR. What the Top Managers of studios are saying to create, that’s what the team creates and for the specific platform which is PS$.

If only Kaz Hirai would come in from of all and said: #MAKEPSVITAGREATAGAIN , we could’ve seen a change in Sony PSVita business strategy.

  • xBarbarikDavex13

Are all these Playstation exclusives? There are a lot of big 3rd party games here that normally aren’t exclusive. I am excited to say the least!

  • Glad to see SONY conference but hoped to see FFVII.. but maybe at PSX ’16

  • I hope Detroit will not be a let down. Cage and his team will not make another Origami Killer again nor a Fahrenheit intrigue.

Beyond 2 Souls was a mediocre experience, playing with just one character is really not the style of QD. They must bring in more characters to the world to see those perspectives and solve the mysteries and Detroit looks like might become a chance in creating a good QD experience. But please don’t suk!

  • I was hoping to see a update on ff7, or let it die, but i was pleasantly suprised with GOW, Kojima’s DS, anmost of all DaysEnd

  • Sad to say only one game catches my attention for the near future and that’s Horizon. GOW is played out, Spiderman is played out, indies are played out. Heck the one game everyone is talking about The Last Guardian looks like a late PS2 early PS3 game to me, not the least bit interested in that one. This whole VR thing will fizzle out in under 2 years so I’m not going to even bother with it. I still look forward to what the future brings but for now for me anyways, it’s not much…!

  • My body was ready.

  • Interesting that they used an image of Ben Affleck (or very similar) as the new look of Batman in the game art.

  • Dear SCE/SIE Executive,

When in the summer will the PSVR pre-orders be open again. I really want to pre-order it so I can guarantee a PSVR headset for myself. Also will the launch titles be available for pre-order when the PSVR is available because I also want to guarantee a copy of Batman Arkham VR and Star Wars Battlefront VR.

    PS (No pun intended)

Please reply because I really want to know because I didn’t get to pre-order it the first time around and I want to make sure I get one this time with my Top 2 VR Games
