Uncharted 4 Multiplayer Guide

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End will hit store shelves on May 10. And while we’ve talked a lot about the single-player campaign, many multiplayer details have remained under wraps. That ends today, as we fill you in on what to expect as well as the philosophy behind some of the new directions we took with multiplayer.

Right off the bat, we want to highlight that all future maps and modes will be included with Uncharted 4 at no additional cost, and all vanity and gameplay in-game store items will be unlockable through gameplay!

This means that the Uncharted 4 Multiplayer community won’t be fragmented by different types of DLC, and that those who are loyal in participating in the community will be rewarded. Our DLC release approach will represent an entirely new direction for Naughty Dog, and we are confident it will have a hugely positive impact and keep the Uncharted 4 Multiplayer community thriving.

It was a long process to determine how all this should work. We went back and forth with how we wanted players to experience this, and we created a few core philosophies.

Uncharted 4 Multiplayer: Philosophy infographic

Fairness First: We strongly believe that players must be on an even playing field. To do this, we made Relics, a currency that can only be earned through gameplay and will be able to unlock all DLC, present and future. We will be putting future gameplay items ranging from Mysticals to Boosters into DLC Gameplay Chests. Each Chest will contain new gameplay items.

An Evolving Experience: We intend to keep the Uncharted 4 Multiplayer experience as fresh as possible for as long as possible. Over time, Naughty Dog will release a variety of new maps, modes and gameplay items at no additional cost (including Co-op), that will introduce new rules and play styles.

DLC Accessible to Everyone: It was our goal from the start to give players the ability to earn DLC items through gameplay. No DLC item is available exclusively using Uncharted Points.

Unified Community: The idea of delivering our DLC this way was greatly influenced by the goal of having a unified community. Maps and modes will be available to everyone on the same day. This will ensure that all players are kept together and experience new content at the same time.

We also feel that a unified community happens through engagement. Beyond our engagement with players through social media and our forums, we’ll soon introduce Cinema so that players can review matches and use a tool that will allow them to create custom Uncharted multiplayer footage. This has been a popular tool in previous Uncharted multiplayer games, and we are excited to make it available in the near future.

How It All Works

We considered a number of systems for our multiplayer DLC economy and have refined them to keep things as simple as possible. The core component revolves around acquiring Relics.

Uncharted 4 Multiplayer: Economy infographic

You acquire Relics by either completing daily Challenges or winning matches, and you can spend them on DLC Chests. You will be able to pick between a DLC Vanity Chest or a DLC Gameplay Chest; when you open it, you’ll earn new items. Neither chest type will ever give you a duplicate item.

Triple Pack

For those of you who purchased the Triple Pack (also included in the Digital Deluxe Edition), you’ll gain future access to:

  • The first-ever single-player story add-on for the Uncharted series
  • Two multiplayer packs to enhance your multiplayer experience:

MP Pack #1
– Long Gun
– Booster
– Skin
– Hat
– Taunt

MP Pack #2
– Pistol
– Booster
– Mystical
– Hat
– Taunt

Roadmap

You will see in our roadmap graphic below that we have full intention of supporting Uncharted 4 Multiplayer for some time, and want to be clear with those intentions. We are going to release quite a bit of content this year, including gameplay items, modes and maps.

Uncharted 4 Multiplayer: Roadmap infographic

Uncharted 4 Multiplayer Modes at Launch

We also want to showcase the modes that will be available at launch. We’ve brought back modes from previous Uncharted multiplayer games, while introducing new ideas to others. Any and all of the modes can be incredibly intense.

Ranked: In Ranked Team Deathmatch, Ranks range from Bronze III to Diamond I. You’ll be awarded points for winning a match, and points will be deducted for losing. When you acquire the necessary number of points, you’ll enter into Qualifiers – which is where things get really interesting. At this point, a player is given the opportunity to increase his or her Rank by winning a certain number of the next few matches. Failing to do so will knock the player out of Qualifiers, and he or she must earn points again for another attempt.

For example, if you are Rank Bronze I and earn enough points to enter Qualifiers, you must win three of your next five matches to reach Rank Silver III. Failing to win at least three of your next five matches will result in a failure in Qualifiers, and will force you to earn points to try again.

It’s a system that we think the competitive among you will enjoy as much as we have in the office.

Command: In this mode, you’ll capture Command Sites for a steady flow of points, or knock out enemy Captains for a large point bonus. Command emphasizes teamwork and a large part of that comes from protecting your Captain.

There are a number of Command Sites across each map. When your team captures one, your team’s score will increase. Command Sites captured by the enemy team must be neutralized before you can capture them for your side. Command Sites are captured faster when more members of the team are inside them.

Whichever player contributes the most points to the team’s objective is the Team Captain. The Captain will receive bonuses — cheaper In-Match Store Items, the ability to revive teammates faster, and more health when downed. When a Captain is designated, the Captain starts at Level 1, but as the Captain gains objective points without being KO’ed, the Captain goes up a Level to a max level of three, which increases the effectiveness of the Captain bonuses. However, at higher levels, the Captain is more visible to the enemy:

Level 1: Enemies see a Captain icon by the Captain’s name
Level 2: Enemies can always see the Captain on radar
Level 3: Captains are automatically Marked until they lose Captain status

Captain status is lost when the Captain is knocked out, which scores the enemy points depending on the level of the Captain. This mode can have some intense comebacks given the large point value a Captain can reach.

Team Deathmatch: A fight to the end with teammates at your side. The goal is to score a certain number of points to win, with each enemy KO being worth one point.

Plunder: In Plunder, grab the idol and return it to your treasure chest for one point. You can throw and climb with the Idol.

Warm Up Playlist: We have made a lot of new gameplay mechanics available, and the Warm Up playlist gives players the opportunity to explore them. You will only be able to play in this playlist for a certain number of matches, to help you understand the multiplayer mechanics before joining the fight.

Trials: Set up as pseudo competitive matches, players go up against enemy NPC opponents with the goal of getting a high score using specific multiplayer mechanics. Each of the 10 Trials will include different levels of difficulty and will award Relics for completion.

Well, that was a lot to cover! I’m sure a number of you will have questions, please ask them below in the comments. We at Naughty Dog, and the MP team in particular, are really excited to finally share all this information with you. The direction we’re taking in Uncharted 4 Multiplayer is going to be a fast and fun ride – we hope you’ll join us!

  • Perfect plan ND.
This is why you’re one one of the best game developers around! Color me 10x more excited for the Multiplayer portion.

  • This game is going to be the best, i already pre ordered my special edition of the game (; … But i like what naughty dog is doing with the “There is no pay to win” strategy making the game fare for everyone who plays.. May 10th needs to come faster!

  • sad to see we go from Autumn 2016 to Winter 2017 with no new content….

    • Well, the winter is also January and February 2017, not just december 2016. So that is my guess..

  • can i have a refund for my digital deluxe version now that i know multiplayer packs 1 and 2 are worthless?

    • Yeah, the price was too good to be true, right?

    • Well, they’re not exactly worthless since you don’t have to pray to RNGsus to get the items from these DLC packs once they’re released. Also with the Digital Deluxe edition you save some bucks. The SP Add-On itself will cost 20$ most likely* while the game itself costs about 60 to 70$ – and the Digital Deluxe edition costs around 80$ – so technically you get the MP stuff for free and unlocked from the get-go.

*TLoU’s Add-On was 20$ iirc, so this could be the same case with U4’s SP Add-On.

  • No Clasic Elimination mode? :( It was the mode I always played with my friends…

  • All a Classic Multiplayer option where you can play without boosters and mystics.

  • This is all a great promise, but it remains to be seen if it works that well. Based on the beta, the amount of Relics gathered from performing well in matches was basically nothing, especially compared to the Daily Challenges. When Daily Challenges are limited to only a few a day however, that becomes a problem.

Ideally it should not take anymore than an hour to gather enough Relics to open a single chest. Plus if you’re also completing Daily Challenges, then on an average player’s day they should be able to open several chests.

Regardless, this news can’t be anything but great news in today’s multiplayer landscape. I hard quit the Last of Us multiplayer because the DLC was handled so poorly.

  • This is all great news! My friend and I were just taking about how UC3 and Last of Us MP have pay to win elements and that we were praying that this game doesnt. AND. Ranked and Co op mode is awesome! Didn’t know it was possible to be more excited than I already was. Lol

  • You guys just convince me to buy the Digital Deluxe edition. Keep up the work.

    • Supersonic41194

Yeah I can’t figure out if I need to buy the digital so I don’t have to go out at midnight… or the physical. I like having the physical copy in my hands, but I have 0 plans to ever trade it in… so?

  • Sounds fantastic guys, I really can’t wait to dive into some more Uncharted multiplayer after I cry at the end of the story! Also, can I ask this. Is there any co-op survival mode in the game at launch? Like just a simple horde mode type game where you and 3 players just fight off waves of enemies like in Uncharted 2 and 3? I actually love that type of multiplayer more than competitive, and I haven’t heard anywhere if it’s in 4 or not. I really hope it is!

    • Co-Op won’t be there at launch. Maybe the “Trials” playlist will have objectives in the style of the old Co-Op modes (killing lots of enemies, siege, capturing an idol). But even then you’ll have to play alone. We have to wait for Co-Op.

  • Great news for a Monday morning. Thank you Naughty Gods!

    Just 8 more days! :D

  • Thank you @NaughtyDog and @Playstation! This sounds amazing, can’t wait to jump in! Keep up the hard work

  • Will customizable private matches be back? I loved playing them with friends!

  • I’d still have to pay for PS plus to play huh ?

  • I’m so proud of you Naughty Dog! I forgive ya for not being able to get my level back in U3 when it got reset when I hit that damn accept button again in the damn agreement :(

I miss my Legacy 5, star and Naughty paw…

    • That sucks…happened to me 3 times during the Subway beta but never during the main games release.

  • When will we find out how much each pack of Naughty Dog points cost in the PS Store?

Can you purchase DLC weapons, modes and mysticals with ND points?

  • Hi:
I really, I mean REALLY don’t understand what’s wrong with you, people. You said:
“For those of you who purchased the Triple Pack (also included in the Digital Deluxe Edition), you’ll gain future access to:
The first-ever single-player story add-on for the Uncharted series”.
It’s really bad that all the PLAYSTATION 3 era cut and sell the multiplayer but now you will cut the Single player experience… Sorry but I won’t support this nonsense.
    Red 5.

    • It’s only nonsense if you’re completely unaware of how their story expansions work. The expansion for TLOU was a standalone experience.

    • They don’t buy it and miss out on it…I understand that you think that it should be part of the story but it’s not and for all we know we could be playing the DLC as Sam.

      Just wait and find out.

  • How about stop being stingy and get with 2016 by having dedicated servers? This P2P crap is BS.

    • I agree but I don’t think anything will change about it. ND says that P2P makes the mp last longer because it is way cheaper to do P2P.

    • P2P is better…because of that we have UC2 servers working until today.Although full of cheaters its something I wouldn’t want to lose the ability to play.So its better to have an online that lasts longer than an online that Sony will close its servers after 2 years.Cough Resistance 3 cough.

  • How many maps will be released at Launch? I read an article about 8 maps and all being new. How many maps will we have access to on May 10th? Thank you

  • Here is hoping that vehicles are part of the “and more” on the roadmap. Would really love to have those in at least co-op :D

  • Here’s hoping a Killzone skin gets released shortly after launch

  • As expected coop delayed not at launch..no one cares about competitive give us coop at launch and now coop is a dlc?

    • is trials co-op arena/survival/horde mode ?

    • Soul-SurVivor94

Me and many people care about competitive. Not everyone shares your opinion…

    • I care more about competitive then Co-Op, and I am not the only one.

Can’t wait for the Co-Op to be added though.

If you are not total trash at playing competitively then send me a friends request.

    • i was beasting it in the beta and also getting the most revives..send me a friend request..but all my friends are co-op players and uncharted games always had co-op at launch while they gladly removed coop from TLOU

    • I will send you a friends request. I play a lot of TDM but I really do enjoy Co-Op play as well. My KDR is above 1.6, nothing great but not bad.

  • Little sad that co-op is relegated to Autumn 2016 instead of being available at launch, but happy to see it isn’t entirely forgotten / dropped either.

I guess I will play the single player, try out the competitive for a bit, and move on to other games until the co-op comes in to the multiplayer.

  • I like it. Good job ND.

  • Are we going to get a Twitch stream this week on multiplayer?

  • 1st of all I’m a bit sad to see that both cinema and co-op won’t be on the game from the start, considering both were registered marks since UC2.

So I see y’all are taking a SF5 approach to UC4 online,I really hope it works well cuz you guys hit the spot with UC4 online which means I’ll be playing it like hell and if relics are the currency we’ll use to purchase DLC then it’ll be great…that if the relics works as in the beta.Free DLC is the best thing ever to an online when it comes to maps, the worst thing you could do is separate the community of your game which will also end up in nobody playing the DLCs maps in the future. Also I’m really really glad to see that there won’t be drops of items you already have, cuz thats something really annoying.

Ranked and Command lookin good, can’t wait to try them.Warm Up Playlist is just like Welcome Mat on PvZ GW.And is Trials like a Botzone?….cuz if it is ND I have no words to express ma joy.

And last but definitely not least…I hope your support doesn’t mean only new content but also a keen eye for cheaters cuz if there is a game where cheaters proliferate…its Uncharted online.

  • “I like turtles.”

  • Also I hope Elimination is one of the modes you guys are playing to add in the future,it was one of ma most played modes in UC2.

BTW ND please bring some TLoU skins,Infamous Second Son,KZ Shadow Fall and skins from all Sony games…it was a blast playing with Cole,Hale,Sev,Chimera and Helghast on UC2.You guys need to repeat that…playing Uncharted online with Tess is ma dream.

  • I’m so glad to see there will be a Co-op model. I love this model!!!

  • You have completely ignored your fan base of over 40…My friends and I were bats testers of your un2 CO-OP THE BEST most enjoyable game EVER!! I was hooked, as we all were. Then you improved it with un3 CO-op by adding an easy mode to be able to play with one very good friend and win. We were all excited about un4 I pee order the console package. I found out today you’be completely ignored us. We never play kill your friends. We are all team oriented preferring to save our downed friends not killing them. Way more fun and way less stressful. WHY!!! would you take the best part of your franchise and do this???? DISCUSTED!!!!

  • Guys…CLASSIC MODE

You’ve obviouslly seen the threads in the forums, how have you guys not learnt from your mistakes in Uncharted 3. If you add it to late the mode will end up being dead again because Uncharted 2 veterans who liked the multiplayer because it was the only one actually making you rely on skill will move on and go on other things.

Please guys…Classic Mode. That’s all. You need to understand people don’t like gimmicks like side kicks, mysticals and the like we like skill based online matches.

  • Counting down the days it’s like Christmas…. Accept with ak-47’s and victor ‘goddamn’ Sullivan!

  • On the roadmap it says I like turtles XD

  • No Co-Op at launch? Oh boy…
Although I had fun playing TDM in the beta, I’m still more of a Co-Op player. Arena and Adventure were awesome in U3 and even playable offline. Speaking of it, there’s no word about offline MP. I had a blast playing Co-Op with splitscreen as well as competetive modes in LAN Party mode. Considering that playing online now requires PS Plus, there’s yet another big reason to include offline MP.
Well, to end this comment nicely: I do think it’s great that the community won’t be split by DLC maps and game modes and that a chest can’t give items you already own. Was very sceptical about that thing in the beta, but now I’m only a bit sceptical. At launch it will be okay, I guess, but let’s just see how it plays out after a year when like 200 customization are there. I swear if I don’t get Drake in his tuxedo ASAP… Though, still better than U3 with all those DLC items and super rare treasures. Right?

  • Some really awesome detailed news! Love it when a developer lays out a roadmap for the game. It’s too bad that co-op won’t be out right away but I’m thrilled it’s coming in regardless. I just really hope it is at least 2 player split-screen! Fingers crossed!!

  • Really sad about the LACK of a CLASSIC mode…without those Mysticals and AIs…

Uncharted multiplayer will never be as good as U2 where it was the gameplay of the SP withotut oo much “gimmicks”…just PURE FUN and skills were encouraged!

Disappointed even more by the lack of COOP at laucnh but at least you confirmed it and say a word about it, contrary to CLASSIC. :(

Nice move on the free DLC maps ND! …would have been SO happy about no player pool split by DLC maps with a classic mode! :P

Wish you success on it ND, for my part, I know I’ll play it for way less longer than U2/U3…sadly. :( Played U2 multi up to U3 release…!

    • This guy gets it. U2 was simple, skill and fun, and everyone started off matches the same so it was FAIR! I don’t really care much about the other stuff though.

  • Are you guys going to kick off the MP on release day or post launch? It would be actually neat to have a week or so to enjoy the story without getting spoilers about the locations, characters etc.

  • ND, please tell me that you are bringing back Three Team Deathmatch to Multiplayer from Uncharted 3, in some way, shape, or form.

  • Im really excited about U4, though i have my reservations about the multiplayer after U3’s unbalanced mess ( whats the point of having multiple guns when there’s always an overpowered faster firing rate one that every single person uses??), Though i tried for a while to like it. you say it’s not pay-2-win but then you basically say buy Uncharted points if you don’t want to grind forever…what.

  • Just want Chateau, Village, Temple, with our old kickbacks :-( Big Bomb and Clusterbomb

  • Thanks for all the warm comments. We are excited for the future of U4MP.

  • How many players can participate in Command? Fantastic game series btw.

  • This was an unexpected surprise, I’m really impressed you guys have taken this route. I don’t normally comment on here, but I wanted to tell you that I really appreciate this kind of decision making. Thanks!

Also, glad to see multiplayer cinema mode again.

    • Thanks for commenting. May 10th can’t come soon enough. I think we’ll be doing a Twitch stream this week to cover all the rest of the MP details.

    • Dear Robert Cogburn, I have asked if there was going to be a Twitch stream this week in this comment section and I have tweeted you the question as well but in the end you just through in a random comment…what gives?

  • Really love this approach to the MP Naughty Dog, I will absolutely buy some content that I probably wouldn’t have just to show support for this model!!

    • Thanks! We’ll be showing off some more stuff during a Twitch stream later this week… I think.

  • So disappointed there isn’t any co-op at launch. Besides the single player, co-op was my favorite part of the Uncharted series. Especially survival. I can’t how many times me and my friend played that mode over and over again especially in Uncharted 2. We was going to take a couple of days off of work so we could dive into, but now I guess I will being going to work those days and play the single player when I get off of work. We never cared for the multiplayer in the previous games at all. Hopefully you guys have a survivor mode in the co-op, Still looking forward to the game in general, but I won’t be spending as much time as I thought would on it until the fall DLC drops with co-op. (SMH walks away from computer}

  • This is all i have to say about this: https://youtu.be/0VP7xTQf_qI
    (not sarcastic in anyway)

  • I don’t know what is mp 2 pack.
They said dlc is from dlc chest.
    So what’s mp pack?

  • Really happy that this guide was created, because I’ve got to say, after playing the multiplayer beta, I was left a bit confused.

  • Love uncharted one of my favorite series have u4 reserved at Gamestop because my oldest son birthday is may 19 me and my sons played the coop split screen heavy I just need to know is it coming back please??? Regardless I’m a fan and will be buying at launch but please give us split screen rather online or offline
