Uncharted 4 Multiplayer Guide

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End will hit store shelves on May 10. And while we’ve talked a lot about the single-player campaign, many multiplayer details have remained under wraps. That ends today, as we fill you in on what to expect as well as the philosophy behind some of the new directions we took with multiplayer.

Right off the bat, we want to highlight that all future maps and modes will be included with Uncharted 4 at no additional cost, and all vanity and gameplay in-game store items will be unlockable through gameplay!

This means that the Uncharted 4 Multiplayer community won’t be fragmented by different types of DLC, and that those who are loyal in participating in the community will be rewarded. Our DLC release approach will represent an entirely new direction for Naughty Dog, and we are confident it will have a hugely positive impact and keep the Uncharted 4 Multiplayer community thriving.

It was a long process to determine how all this should work. We went back and forth with how we wanted players to experience this, and we created a few core philosophies.

Uncharted 4 Multiplayer: Philosophy infographic

Fairness First: We strongly believe that players must be on an even playing field. To do this, we made Relics, a currency that can only be earned through gameplay and will be able to unlock all DLC, present and future. We will be putting future gameplay items ranging from Mysticals to Boosters into DLC Gameplay Chests. Each Chest will contain new gameplay items.

An Evolving Experience: We intend to keep the Uncharted 4 Multiplayer experience as fresh as possible for as long as possible. Over time, Naughty Dog will release a variety of new maps, modes and gameplay items at no additional cost (including Co-op), that will introduce new rules and play styles.

DLC Accessible to Everyone: It was our goal from the start to give players the ability to earn DLC items through gameplay. No DLC item is available exclusively using Uncharted Points.

Unified Community: The idea of delivering our DLC this way was greatly influenced by the goal of having a unified community. Maps and modes will be available to everyone on the same day. This will ensure that all players are kept together and experience new content at the same time.

We also feel that a unified community happens through engagement. Beyond our engagement with players through social media and our forums, we’ll soon introduce Cinema so that players can review matches and use a tool that will allow them to create custom Uncharted multiplayer footage. This has been a popular tool in previous Uncharted multiplayer games, and we are excited to make it available in the near future.

How It All Works

We considered a number of systems for our multiplayer DLC economy and have refined them to keep things as simple as possible. The core component revolves around acquiring Relics.

Uncharted 4 Multiplayer: Economy infographic

You acquire Relics by either completing daily Challenges or winning matches, and you can spend them on DLC Chests. You will be able to pick between a DLC Vanity Chest or a DLC Gameplay Chest; when you open it, you’ll earn new items. Neither chest type will ever give you a duplicate item.

Triple Pack

For those of you who purchased the Triple Pack (also included in the Digital Deluxe Edition), you’ll gain future access to:

  • The first-ever single-player story add-on for the Uncharted series
  • Two multiplayer packs to enhance your multiplayer experience:

MP Pack #1
– Long Gun
– Booster
– Skin
– Hat
– Taunt

MP Pack #2
– Pistol
– Booster
– Mystical
– Hat
– Taunt

Roadmap

You will see in our roadmap graphic below that we have full intention of supporting Uncharted 4 Multiplayer for some time, and want to be clear with those intentions. We are going to release quite a bit of content this year, including gameplay items, modes and maps.

Uncharted 4 Multiplayer Modes at Launch

We also want to showcase the modes that will be available at launch. We’ve brought back modes from previous Uncharted multiplayer games, while introducing new ideas to others. Any and all of the modes can be incredibly intense.

Ranked: In Ranked Team Deathmatch, Ranks range from Bronze III to Diamond I. You’ll be awarded points for winning a match, and points will be deducted for losing. When you acquire the necessary number of points, you’ll enter into Qualifiers – which is where things get really interesting. At this point, a player is given the opportunity to increase his or her Rank by winning a certain number of the next few matches. Failing to do so will knock the player out of Qualifiers, and he or she must earn points again for another attempt.

For example, if you are Rank Bronze I and earn enough points to enter Qualifiers, you must win three of your next five matches to reach Rank Silver III. Failing to win at least three of your next five matches will result in a failure in Qualifiers, and will force you to earn points to try again.

It’s a system that we think the competitive among you will enjoy as much as we have in the office.

Command: In this mode, you’ll capture Command Sites for a steady flow of points, or knock out enemy Captains for a large point bonus. Command emphasizes teamwork and a large part of that comes from protecting your Captain.

There are a number of Command Sites across each map. When your team captures one, your team’s score will increase. Command Sites captured by the enemy team must be neutralized before you can capture them for your side. Command Sites are captured faster when more members of the team are inside them.

Whichever player contributes the most points to the team’s objective is the Team Captain. The Captain will receive bonuses — cheaper In-Match Store Items, the ability to revive teammates faster, and more health when downed. When a Captain is designated, the Captain starts at Level 1, but as the Captain gains objective points without being KO’ed, the Captain goes up a Level to a max level of three, which increases the effectiveness of the Captain bonuses. However, at higher levels, the Captain is more visible to the enemy:

Level 1: Enemies see a Captain icon by the Captain’s name
Level 2: Enemies can always see the Captain on radar
Level 3: Captains are automatically Marked until they lose Captain status

Captain status is lost when the Captain is knocked out, which scores the enemy points depending on the level of the Captain. This mode can have some intense comebacks given the large point value a Captain can reach.

Team Deathmatch: A fight to the end with teammates at your side. The goal is to score a certain number of points to win, with each enemy KO being worth one point.

Plunder: In Plunder, grab the idol and return it to your treasure chest for one point. You can throw and climb with the Idol.

Warm Up Playlist: We have made a lot of new gameplay mechanics available, and the Warm Up playlist gives players the opportunity to explore them. You will only be able to play in this playlist for a certain number of matches, to help you understand the multiplayer mechanics before joining the fight.

Trials: Set up as pseudo competitive matches, players go up against enemy NPC opponents with the goal of getting a high score using specific multiplayer mechanics. Each of the 10 Trials will include different levels of difficulty and will award Relics for completion.

Well, that was a lot to cover! I’m sure a number of you will have questions, please ask them below in the comments. We at Naughty Dog, and the MP team in particular, are really excited to finally share all this information with you. The direction we’re taking in Uncharted 4 Multiplayer is going to be a fast and fun ride – we hope you’ll join us!

  • Big takeaway for me:

“The first-ever single-player story add-on for the Uncharted series”

Hope this is like “Left Behind” for TLOU.

    • They already said they’ll take the same approach that Left Behind did for UC4 SP DLC.

    • How about stop being stingy and get with 2016 by having dedicated servers? This P2P crap is BS.

    • This isn’t Battlefield. You don’t need dedicated servers for 5v5 multiplayer.

Hello Naughty Dog! While I am incredibly pleased with your decision to give so much interesting content to the players for your multiplayer experience. However, I can’t help but feel slightly disappointed in purchasing the deluxe digital version, the triple pack seemed more appealing before than what mp offerings will be given now.

All in all I bought the triple pack for the single player addition and was looking forward to the mp content but the plan you have laid out looks great. A lot of content spread out over the next year.

I will be looking forward to the coop mode as it is one of my favourites and believe that these steps are much more appealing then the in opinion expensive last of us mp offerings.

I hope this is the way naughty dog will handle their future games mp offers. Whether that’s the last of us 2 or a new IP. I am looking forward to May 10 to step back in the boots of Nathan Drake.

    • Yea I hope the DLC is similar to Left Behind as well.

    • MP- CLASSIC MODE!!! PLEASE ADD A CLASSIC MODE!!!

  • I really appreciate how you guys are handling DLC, updates, and expansions this time around. Good philosophy and I hope more devs and publishers do the same in the future.

With that said, I’m really excited to play this game. Just over a week away! I’ll be playing the story mode first but can’t wait to really get into the MP too.

  • Glad I passed on the Triple Pack. I don’t care much for MP.

I’m guessing that the SP add-on will be cheaper than the price of the Triple Pack. I’ll pick that up, instead, whenever it’s released.

  • I’M SO EXICTED

  • I absolutely can’t wait for May 10th! The Open Beta was probably the most fun I’ve had with a multi-player in a long time

  • I wish there was a Random mode where you don’t know what Multiplayer Mode you’re going to play until the character select screen. So excited for this, and I wouldn’t be upset if you all release the digital game a few days early. ;-)

  • (We have CD Projekt Red to thank for this)

    • Other developers and publishers have done this before The Witcher 3. It’s a growing trend though, which is good.

  • Folks flock to Uncharted for the single-player campaign, and for good reason – it’s among the best out there – but they really shouldn’t sleep on multiplayer! From what I’ve played of previous Uncharteds and now U4’s MP beta, it’s really well thought-out and fun way to use the skills you’ve mastered through the campaign in a lively and light-hearted competitive setting :-)

  • Robert you and the team had done it again like always, cant wait!!!

  • DLC Weapons :/

  • Will there be split screen for the multiplayer?

  • That’s great and all but what about splitscreen? It was introduced in Uncharted 3 and it would suck if my sister can’t play the multiplayer with me unless she spends a whole lot of money for a PS4, the game and PS Plus. Seriously, that was one of the best features of Uncharted 3…

  • Is the Triple Pack worth it?

    • Depends on what exactly the DLC packs will offer. TLoU had awesome MP DLC, especially the “Enforcer” gun was pretty awesome, so going by that it will most likely be worth it. Except you’re very, very, VERY patient and try to unlock it all with threasure chests or… you’re not into multiplayer at all, in which case you should just wait for the SP DLC to drop. If you’re unsure you better wait until the content will actually be revealed.

  • No co-op to start? I don’t like that..

    • Soul-SurVivor94

Come one be grateful these guys really work hard. We are still getting it eventually

    • @ shane08 I agree. Co-op is what my friends and I played online w/ Uncharted 2 & 3. I’m extremely disappointed that co-op mode won’t be available for another 6 months or so.
@ Soul-SurVivor94 We all are paying the same money for the game, but the folks who prefer competitive modes are getting what they want right out of the box whlie those of us who prefer co-op aren’t. Ergo those of us who prefer co-op have the right to be upset. Yes, we’re glad that NG is going to provide the mode. Eventually. But I’m not happy about the delay.

    • The co -op mode will continue with 3 players?

    • I’ll get the game when the coop is released. No rush here.

  • Destinys_Memory

Welp. Someone remind me why I shelled out $20 for the triple pack again. If that future SP content ends up costing less than $20… Oof.

  • “One last time”? Yep. One last time… Lets get it!

  • Really excited about all of this. My only complaint is there is no co-op arena or adventure. My internet doesn’t pass U4’s VERY strict upload speed so that leaves me out on playing any compettitive modes. So me and my brother were banking on playing co-op alone. Or through LAN

  • Cinema Replay is re-watching cutscenes from the story mode right?

And what’s the new game mode? Story DLC?

  • Soul-SurVivor94

Sounds awesome uncharted is my favourite multiplayer game I played uncharted 3 multiplayer from day 1almost until the ps4 came out. It was so much fun and Naughty dog supported us so well. Seems like we are getting a better treatment here am excited ! It would be great if we could know what kind of game modes can we expect in the future ?

  • Corporeal_Monkey

That’s really nice! What’s up with it saying “Winter 2017” are you just going to take a break completely for a year after Autumn and return in late 2017?

    • They mean around Jan, Feb, and a little in to march 2017. Winter isn’t only the month of December.

    • I thought it might be a typo and I was right, if you look as the image it says 2016 winter now, which makes a lot of sense :D

  • cl-3-5-7-1-IV-y

Any news on splitscreen? It was one of the greatest things about Uncharted 3. I’d like to play with my wife without having to buy another PS4, membership, etc. Also, it was fun playing with friends who didn’t have a system.

  • mp stuff for the season pass doesn’t seem worth it if i can just buy the sp add on for cheaper. kinda disappointed to be honest

    • I don’t think it is worth it either but we don’t know exactly what the items we are getting are…maybe they will be special Triple Pack vanity items.

  • Schlittschuhlauf

As a fan of tlou mp, im sure i will love this.

  • will the Trials mode be like the survival from uc2 ?
I hope so , and I hope there wont be mystical or sidekick in it

    • Soul-SurVivor94

Seems like it. I hope we will be able to modify game modes to our liking

    • aghh
it’s not , it’s a mode where you play it alone . well ,that was sad
I lost my hope in competitive modes after adding all these gimmicks, so co-op was the only hope left for me .
why do I need to wait 4 moths to play it ?
      my hype drops significantly

  • Thank you for the coming co-op mode! The ranked modes also sound cool because it sounds like you will only be playing against people of your rank or one level up. This sounds like Rocket League and works well for me because I’m not a great player, but it lets me play against similar skilled players.

  • siddhant19shukla

Why r u not releasing co op straight away? What about co op adventure and arena? I loved to play those in U3 multiplayer. And will there be split screen?

  • Will there be custom games?

  • uncharted 4 split screen?

  • Hey guys! Glad to hear more about the multiplayer, but sad to hear about Cinema and Co-Op launching at a later date. Will players be able to bring their local friends online, like in Uncharted 3? Thanks for the answer!

  • NAUGHTY DOG, yo’ve done it again!!! I absolutely can’t WAIT for May 10th!!! It’s a good thing my last final is this Wednesday, otherwise, I would’ve flunked :)

  • siddhant19shukla

will there be a classic mode like in U2 with only guns, grenades and skills?

  • Kind of disappointed in the Triple Pack content, but that disappointment is quickly overcome by the fact that the DLC maps will be free. We’ll actually get to play the new maps without having to worry about a toggle. Hopefully they are added in a mandatory patch or something to avoid people not downloading them. Also, I am hoping the cinema mode patch releases early summer. It is a much needed feature for both the YouTube and Competitive side of Uncharted.

  • Everyone at Naughty Dog is amazing! Thank you for your hard work and all the thought that went into keeping Uncharted 4 multiplayer a fresh and fair experience. :)

  • Soul-SurVivor94

How many maps are going to be available at launch?

  • All I ask is that we PLEASE get Co-op Arena from Uncharted 2 back. Fighting through waves of increasingly difficult enemies was some of the most fun I’ve had in Uncharted multiplayer. Alternating through random other objectives like Plunder during the same match in Uncharted 3 was a terrible idea. I just want exactly what we had with Co-op Arena in Uncharted 2 back. Please. Thank you!

  • Awesome! Great ideas for adding longevity to the mp. Hopefully vehicles will be added in the future and the coop mode will worth the wait. I’m sure a lot of people will be disappointed that there won’t be a classic mode or custom matches at launch though.

  • I would really like to know whether there are leaderboards or statistics like we had them in Uncharted 2 or Uncharted 3. Together with this new ‘Ranked’ mode this could be something for all the competetive players. :D Like others said, i really hope that the cinema mode is coming as soon as possible. It was always a great feature for YouTube or the Competetive Community of Uncharted.

  • In love already! <3

  • I wonder if Uncharted 4 has a supernatural twist like previous games would that imply that the coop is horde mode against monsters rather than normal enemies?

  • Love it but this is what I read.

DLC Is in vanity chest’s so that everyone can get them (GREAT) but if you want the DLC right away even though you bought the Triple Pack you can always spend more money on NaughtyDog points ;)

I have no problem with this though…new gun’s, boosters and mysticals are bought with NaughtyDog points or you can try and unlock them randomly.

  • No search and destroy like game mode?

  • I’m mainly glad ND decided to take the sprinting out of the game. It was such a game breaker in UC3. I can’t wait for Tuesday for my collectors edition to arrive & start climbing the leader boards!

  • Really bummed out by the lack of co-op at launch. Never really got into Uncharted’s competitive multiplayer. Played a lot of co-op in 2 and 3. Will probably buy it, plat it, and trade it. Will consider picking it up again used whenever co-op comes out.

    • The competitive mp is fun…if you want to get into it more shoot me a friends request and we can team up.

    • yeah I agree, the co-op MP is where this game really shone in the previous games, blew through so many hours playing this.

  • Hey guys. Can you please tell me whether or not we will be able to play 2 player split screen ONLINE. 2 players one console one tv in full competitive online

    Thank you very much

  • Nice
    Can’t wait!!!

  • I have a question for you, ND but it is somewhat unrelated to this. I have no questions about U4 MP and I will say, I’m really looking forward to it. Anyway, my question is this:

Are you guys going to hold another stream for charity like you did last year?

  • I’m glad you guys learned from Sledgehammer and Treyarch on how frustrating receiving the same items from a supply drop can be. Being that we won’t receive the same item twice, the road to a new weapon may still be long but at least it won’t feel impossible. I think they said there’s like a 1% chance a person will receive a weapon in BO3. While I like the idea of getting excited after seeing a weapon pop up in a drop, that’s absolutely nuts. What kind of odds are those? Anyways, the other thing I’m excited about is the Cinemas return. Been waiting to hear about it forever and I’ve missed since 2011 since TLOU didn’t have it unfortunately. From the article it sounds like maybe there’s not a Black Ops like mechanic that will help with directing? I really hope so. As much as I love testing the steadiness of my hands, this time around I would love it if the game just had the option to create paths for the camera to follow. I could make my scenes a lot more intense with a tool like that. Here’s to hoping we get it day one, or at least sometime down the road.

    • Typos in my comment above. I am saying it sounds like there WILL be a BO like director mode in the cinema and I very much so hope for that.

  • kai_is_the_name

Can’t wait for the game in general, and the multiplayer seems to be amazingly fun. I’ve been waiting for this for a while, Uncharted looks amazing already.

  • Soul-SurVivor94

Am going to miss three team death match

  • So when we find a relic can we keep it forever and see it post match like in U3 or no ?? I mean will we have some MP treasure collection or no ???
