PS Plus: Free Games for January, 2016

As we look forward to the New Year, we’re excited to share our January 2016 PlayStation Plus lineup with everyone. This month our PS4 games pay homage to a couple classic, fan-favorite titles, while updating the gameplay and graphics to PS4!

Hardware: Rivals makes its exclusive debut on PlayStation Plus. Get behind the wheel of a powerful tank or mobile attack jeep in this arcade-style, vehicle combat game. Inspired by the PS2 classic Hardware: Online Arena, Hardware: Rivals lets you challenge your friends or enter the online multiplayer arena on your own and experience epic vehicular mayhem with multiple maps, game modes, and special events.

If you need a breather from all the vehicle-on-vehicle combat, you can always turn to the twisted Mexican folklore of Grim Fandango Remastered. As Manny Calavera, travel agent for the Department of Death, you’ll guide poor souls to their eternal rest. Crime. Skeletons. Romance. You’ll experience it all in this update to the beloved adventure game.

These PS4 games are free for PlayStation Plus members starting on the first Tuesday of January, and you can find the full list of PlayStation Plus games below.

Full Lineup:

  • Dragon Age: Origins, PS3
  • Grim Fandango Remastered, PS4, PS Vita
  • Hardware: Rivals, PS4
  • Legends of War Patton, PS Vita
  • Medal of Honor Warfighter, PS3
  • Nihilumbra, PS Vita

Before you go, we want your feedback! Please leave us a comment below and tell us what you think of the lineup. Thank you for stopping by.

Until next time! Enjoy.

  • Not usually one for commenting on here. But the last couple of months the PS+ program hasn’t compelled me to continue to justify paying for it. When it runs out I don’t see myself getting it renewed.

  • I don’t mind the selection of games usally but what I do mind is being given psp games. For my subscription I am led to believe that I will be getting vita games, not psp games. I would hope that they wouldn’t give us ps1 games as part of the subscription so why on earth are they pulling this with us vita owners. The other month they give us Invizimals for the psp, now they give us Legends of war. Both of these games have vita versions so give us the vita games and not the psp versions. I pay a subscription for ps3 and vita games. I don’t pay to be given games for psp.

  • They use indie titles instead of AAA because they know that most customers are willing to spend their money on AAA, not necessarily the indies. It’s a way to get a wider audience to try out some games that could potentially be hidden gems.

  • An 6 year old RPG, a remastered point-n-click game, a new combat racer, a turn based strategy game no one has heard of, a “poor” shooter, and a puzzle platformer….

….compared to a free to play fighting game, a “side-scrolling” beat-em up, a sequel to a dead racing franchise given 2 months before, and an RPG/shooter.

I’ll take my chances with PlayStation.

  • Someone said “sigh. underwhelming selection is underwhelming. it really feels more like the sort of gifts you pass along to random relatives becasue you didn’t like them or had any use of them”

EXACTLY right. Those people who choose the PS PLUS titles…do you *really* think they would play those titles themselves? I think not. The PLUS games reek of being “afterthoughts”….they aren’t even close to being frontline games. Most months, I haven’t even HEARD of 75% of the PLUS titles. I’m like “what the _ is THIS?”.

I’m not saying there aren’t hidden gems among lesser known games that you can enjoy but every single month is filled with these bizarre titles. That’s why I decided to cancel my PLUS membership.

The bottom line is that the PS4 is vastly outselling the XBone, so Sony doesn’t have to go nuts to try to sell them. You can almost hear them saying, “We can give them anything on PS4 and it doesn’t matter”.

    They’re winning….they don’t care.

    Case closed.

  • I have not been impressed with the ps + lineup in a long time. These are not free games. We pay for them with the subscription.

    • $50 a year for a subscription, 6 games a month at least, whether on systems you do or don’t have. After the first month, the rest of the year is free games. But call me a liar for doing math

  • THANK YOU PLAYSTATION ! this is the best way to start off the new year !!!! I am so excited to play HARDWARE: RIVALS and GRIM FANDANGO. War legends of Patton and Nihilumbra. You have way better PS3 exclusive games in your library in my opinion the MEDAL OF HONOR WARFIGHTER. You can’t please everyone but you’ve certainly pleases me ! Can we expect to see any PS2 games on PS4 shoe up in the PLAYSTATION PLUS catalog this year ?

  • When do the free games go live? Still seeing Gauntlet et. al here.

  • Disappointed yet again by the ps4 offerings. We deserve AAA titles on a system that’s been out for over 2 years. Especially when your competition is offering 4 games that are better than any of the 2 ps4 owners get. 0/10 Sony… and that’s since launch, with the exception of the 2 AAA games you ever offered.

  • I’d hope in the near future, Sony starts adding ps3 games for ps+ using ps now. I have all the systems, but some people don’t. It increases the value of plus for single or dual system subscribers. If I can’t “use ” ps now servers for available games I’ve purchased, at least offer it up for ps plus games. Image the exposure for that service. People might even rent more games when they get used to accessing ps now. Also, how about a “Playstation +Now ” tier for $100 or$125? OR, allow us to play ONE available psn game tied to our account per month using now (if available and active ps+ sub).

  • Medal of Honor Warfighter? Really? The game is going on 4 years old. Who ever hasn’t played this game yet, haven’t played it for a reason. With the arsenal of PS3 games that you got to choose from, you guys can do WAY BETTER than this. Goat Simulator, OctoDad, I’m Bread, to name a few quirky PSN games that you’re giving away for dollars that haven’t been up on PS+ yet and no where near as old as MOH. Clearly someone on the PS+ team dropped the ball and couldn’t secure a real title and just blew the dust off some junk. This kind of laziness cost most people their jobs.

    • I haven’t played it because I’m not the biggest fan of FPS games, but since it’s free, I will play it now. And all these people complaining about not getting a AAA game are people who need to learn value in things instead of having everything given to them. It’s sad that people complain even though they are given something

  • It’s Tuesday why ain’t the new games on there yet

  • I’m a member of PS+ so I can play online with friends, not for the Free Games…….. I’m a member of Xbox Live for the free games

  • At this point I’d prefer free PS2 games rather than the iOS leftovers that should prolly have a remaster before being ported to better systems.

  • Looking at the store on my PS3. Still the games from last month. Not sure what the deal is.

  • Pretty poor selection really. PS3 always gets games that were great and pushed the system to its max. PS4 players get the shaft every month with indie games or two games that revolve around medieval crap, or even games that have been out for years but are ‘remastered’. Getting pretty sick of it. I mean, I’m thankful that Sony gives us free games every month, but I mean we are PAYING for the subscription, which is also something else we never had to do to play online on PS3. So please Sony…at least TRY to impress us.

  • Complete crap month once again. Ps3 get all good games every month because it’s an old system and they want to keep they’re obsolete players appeased. Getting real tired of this PlayStation. Why short change your loyal modern customers who spent the money to have a ps4?

  • Rough month for me. I already own most of these, except Hardware Rivals, but not sure that in my bag.

It is all ok though because PSN now has Rebel Galaxy for sale…..ive been wanting to play that since i first saw it on Steam. If anyone in my PS plus shoes, is looking for something else to check out…it might be worth a gander to you.

Its a space combat/trading game with big capital ships. It has a sort of Firefly feel when the soundtrack is rippin’ in the background.

Anyway, just wanted to shine a light on a game that might not be known to everyone.

  • Come on Sony, You can do better with ps4

  • How long till` we will get decent free games ? How long, ?

  • For less than £4 a month for online play and at least 2 games to try (you will never please everyone) I think it’s pretty good value. Sony is a business and you have a choice if you want to part with your cash.
Considering it costs more to rent 1 movie per month that you can’t keep it’s not that bad.

  • hugely disappointing…..as always really. I dont think i’ve ever been excited about the PS+ games for PS4 ever since its launch. Lucky PS3 users though with DA:O.

when are PS4 users going to get something decent as opposed to (for example) this month’s remastered stuff.

  • I don’t think this is a *terrible* line up, as it’s certainly better than some of the previous offerings. My pick for the best out of the bunch would definitely be MOH, but then again, I like shooters. I’ve never played or had the urge to play Grim Fandango, and I sold my Vita primarily because it really wasn’t that much fun for me, so that lineup doesn’t really matter for me. As far as Hardware Rivals, I would rather just go and play Twisted Metal any day, much more dark, graphic, and gritty.

  • Hardware Rivals was a crap beta. Game selection blows this month.

  • There is no point in leaving feedback it doesn’t get listened to. When I first got PS plus on ps3 I could remember all the great games I got for free (battlefield, uncharted, BioShock). The PS3 is still getting great titles. Now since we have to pay for ps plus anyway to play online they don’t care about stuffing these indie games with terrible graphics down our throats. I bought a ps4 for the great graphics and gameplay after my experience with PS plus on ps3 I thought it would be even better. Instead I get N64 graphics games on a current gen system. Mario 64 had better graphics and gameplay then some of these titles.

  • I am reasonably sure there is a simple answer that I have not found yet, but why is it when I try to “purchase” the ICG titles I get the message stating “You are not eligible to purchase or download this content.” Nothing is more aggravating than paying for a service just to have to jump through hoops to get the content.

  • Ever since I bought my PS4 in Oct. the only good “free” game PS+ has offered is TWD season 2….

  • I’ve had PS+ ever since it came out for the free games, they used to be fun games, interesting games, and games that were older but high quality. It turned me on to some of my favorite games I would have never tried before. The ps4 PS+ though seems to just shove games down my throat that no one would buy or that are essentially demos to try and get me to buy the full version of a bad game. I’d rather wait several months of no games to get a decent game that fits the old template than be assaulted by these spam games

  • yet another weak month of offerings for PS4 to coerce us to buy new games.

  • Ps pluse games are not free, you are requierd to subscribe to obtain the”free games”.

  • EVEN THE NEW POST ABOUT GAME SALES IS GARBAGE TOO

    UNBELIEVABLE !!!!!!

  • Taking influence from another poster.

I’m not expecting anything great, PS has made it clear NOT to expect triple A games. OK that’s fine, but how about something fun to play once in while.

    Resogun = 1/5
    Injustice Ultimate Edition = 0/5
Outlast = 3/5; scared the crap outta me
Rocket League = 5/5 Best game ever. I still play it religiously. Anyone who didn’t get it free should either buy it, or just sell their PS
    inFAMOUS 1st Light = 3.5/5
Guacamelee Super Turbo Edition = 0/5
Driveclub PS Plus Edition = 0/5; we were supposed to get this for free at the beginning, right?
    Strider = 1/5
Walking Dead Season 2 =3/5; felt like i was watching s how instead of playing the game. gave you season 2 so you would feel the need to buy season = 0.5/5
Oddworld New n Tasty = 0/5; this game was god awfu

    • Your rationale is correct but I have to disagree with how you scored Strider and Injustice. Strider was the first game I played on PS4 and it was damn good. Not 5/5 but at least a solid 3-4 for the genre. Injustice a solid fighter. Other than that no disagreements here.

  • I’ve got a PS4 and a Vita and I’m once again totally satisfied with the games and functionality I get for $4.17 per month. All you whiners can keep on complaining; your kvetching and penny pinching is embarrassing to the rest of us.

  • The likes/dislikes on the youtube video speak for themselves, this lineup is terrible. My PS Plus membership expires in April, and I don’t play online much, so I’m not really seeing any incentive to renew it.

  • Well well, can’t say I’m all too disappointed…. Last month’s games were, mediocre at best…. SSX was okay, FC3 : Blood Dragon, haven’t got around to playing it let alone downloading it so i don’t really have a review on that. However this month I’m probably only going to be downloading DAO…. I’d love to see new-ish kind of ps3 games, but as well as that…. They got Final Fantasy 1-9 and Tactics….. I want to see Final Fantasy XII….. And some other ps2 classics as well… Just my personal opinion… Definitely not a reason i see to switch to Xbox though just sayin…

  • Dragon Ages: Origin is a gem of RPG. If for whatever reason someone hasn’t played it yet, better late than never.

But on the whole all these titles are all kinda meh. On the other side of the aisle, Xbox is getting equally meh titles. BUT there’s a big difference. Sony enslaves you to your PS+ account to use your free games. Xbox doesn’t. What you get with Gold, you keep forever. That’s a pretty big difference. If Sony did that with PS+ and gave the PS3 and PS4 an update to use external HDD, there likely would be an undisputed champ.

    • If I understand correctly, the games you get for the 360 are yours to keep. The games for the Xbox One work the same way as Plus: you can play them only with an active subscription.

  • To those who kvetch about this month’s offering citing Xbox is the better deal…STOP
Indie games cater to new and often times different (to the casual gamer). AAA games cater to what’s pretty and been done to death.

  • I wish you would not put games that were on sale in the last 2 months such as Grim Fandango Remastered- as a free game.

  • I have never posted here before, and after watching 15 pages of valid complaint after complaint, the thing that truly angers me is that there isn’t one single response to any of the people who took the time to post their opinion. Not one. I think that is the largest slap in the face personally. To sit there and not comment when people are obviously quite upset makes no sense to me. In the past the comments usually are saved for the few posts that are positive in nature. Why don’t you open a dialogue with the people who are angry? I am not asking for every comment to be responded to but to totally ignore us is a disgrace. Prove to us that people are reading these messages, instead of ducking comments that are not positive.
    .

  • CBJ- sadly, if you’re expecting a response from any Sony blogger here to our complaints, you’ll be waiting a very LONG time.

They don’t care. They only care when they’re posting to promote something.

And they only want POSITIVE feedback. Anything else is ignored.

As for this ridiculous comment by WaffleFountain->>>> “All you whiners can keep on complaining; your kvetching and penny pinching is embarrassing to the rest of us”

HUH? You really think this has to do with PENNY PINCHING? It has to do with the continual lack of quality in PS PLUS, month after month. The exact cost has little to do with it. I think most of us would be happy to pay $70 or $80 a year, if it meant GOOD, SOLID PS4 titles, PHYSICAL DISC retail releases….not titles that sounded like they were picked out of a 5-year old’s bedtime story.

    GET REAL.

  • And oh yeah….more than 13,000 DISLIKES on Youtube for this month’s PS PLUS lineup.

    WOW, Sony…..will you notice NOW?

My decision not to re-subscribe is looking like a great one.

  • I’m VERY happy with the PS3 and PS Vita games this month. Well done on this. I don’t know much about Hardware Rivals though. My one request would be not to have the same game for Vita and PS4 since I can remote play the PS4 game anyways, but aside from that, I’m excited for a number of these games. A lot better than the last few months in my opinion.

  • I am disappointed and i feel insulted

  • They do not not notice the discomfort of costumers or do not care

  • I can’t believe people are saying that they are going to move to xbox due to these games being ‘given’ to them!!!!!
Go and waste your money on a xbox one and enjoy some free games, but be prepared to be waiting a LONG time for a decent AAA as their games list is awful!!

  • Whats going om with these bad game choices sony ? Cant really see the point in having ps plus anymore.. im so disappointed and have been for a long time… You are losing us sony.. be warned !

  • I see people keep saying “it’s free, why all the crying?”.
First of all, no, it’s NOT free – it’s U$50.00/year. If you know where can I get really for free a PSPlus subscription don’t be selfish let us know.

People pay in advance expecting what the service announces: interesting games (A.K.A., good games).
When someone pay for the PSPlus they are buying a surprise ticket in hope to get some advantage for investing money beforehand on Sony.

It does not need to be the BEST AAA+ games, it just need to be good games, worth to have and play.
It does not need to be a brand new game, but please, save us from old games like Dragon Age Origins. It WAS an amazing game on its time, and very few will be very happy to get it free now because most of the player who would really care already played it. And don’t even try to tell me Grim Fandango is not that old… it’s a remastered game from 1998.

What about give us good (but not top) games that where launched in the last 3 ~ 6 months (just after the title’s sales start to drop) and SOMETIMES one AAA+ from the last year?

Until this day, bye bye; I’m another one not renovating my subscription until the service gets better.

  • Great, another month of worthless INDIE Games, compared to X360 (Grid Showdown + Deus Ex Human Revolution) and PS3 where you get FULL games. Might be fun to play, for an hour or 2 but after that I don’t see any fun in Indie games, I got STEAM for that crap where you get them for 1 buck or 2 bucks.

    • Now imagine if you had already owned 4 different copies of Dragon Age Origin and a copy of Grim Fandango just to salt the wound.

  • Not only is this insulting to me cuz I just purchased Grim during the Halloween sale and have yet to play it, but also cuz I now own 4 different versions of DAI. Could have at least given out DA2. Even Origin gave out free copies of DAO like a year ago. All the other crap this month is about as useful to me as a copy of Twisted Metal. Oh wait, Sony did that already. I will not be downloading a single game on any of these 3 platforms, all of which I own, from this month’s list unless someone goes out of their way to convince me to play Hardware Rivals with them and I can’t convince them to play Rocket League instead.

There was a time when I championed + as being a great deal and noticeably better than XB Gold. Sad day when I have to commend M$ for doing something better than Sony on the games front. What happened to the days of good games like Tomb Raider, Injustice, and even Saints Row 3? If it wasn’t a mandatory service I would just cancel my sub and use the $ to buy good games on sales. And that reminds me. Why we no longer seeing discounts for PS+ on Flash sales? That was the 2nd biggest reason to sub back when I first joined in the PS3 glory days. Get your mess together Sony.

  • Grim Fandango; possibly one of the best games ever! Don’t judge it until you’ve played it…
