PS4 System Software Update 3.00 Out 9/30, Take a Visual Tour

The 3.00 system software update on PS4, codename: Kenshin, will be available to download starting tomorrow, September 30th. We want to extend our sincere thanks to everyone that participated in the beta. I want you to all know that we’ve listened. Your feedback made this system software update even better.

PS4 System Software Update 3.0

There are a lot of changes in this update, from entirely new features to UI enhancements. While we detailed its key features earlier this month, we wanted to give a visual tour of our favorite new additions. This update is focused on creating new ways to connect with friends and players around the world, expanding the social capabilities of the system even further.

Sharing video clips to Twitter: Now it’s easy to share video clips to Twitter directly from your PS4. You’ll see a new icon on the Upload Video Clip menu, nestled between Facebook and YouTube. Maximum video length is 10 seconds, though you’ll have the ability to trim longer clips. Don’t forget — you can double tap the Share button to start recording a video, and press it again to stop.

PlayStation Plus: We’ve made a dedicated section for PlayStation Plus, which you can access by clicking the big Plus icon on the top left corner of your PS4 home screen. Once there you can easily manage your membership, see the monthly free games to download, deals for PS Plus members, and all of the games you’ve redeemed through PS Plus on PS4.

YouTube live: You’ll see a new icon for YouTube on the Broadcast Gameplay Screen, accessible after hitting the Share button. Now you can live stream directly from your PS4 to YouTube. Livestreams will be viewable across YouTube.

PNG Screenshots: If you’d like your game screenshots to be in a higher quality format, you can now select PNG instead of JPEG. To access, press Share > Share Settings > Screenshot Settings > Image Format.

Events: A new hub for Events has been added to PS4, accessible from the home screen. This will give you an overview of activities taking place in the games you play most, as well as official broadcasts. For instance, here’s an in-game racing event taking place in Project Cars, which you can register for directly from the Events hub.

PS4 System Software Update 3.0

Improvements to Messages and Favorite Groups: We’ve improved Messages by making it easier to access groups of people you chat and play games with frequently. Once you’re added to or create a group, you’ll see the online status for friends, what games they are playing, and the option to message or chat in party all in one spot. When you add or create a new favorite group, they’ll appear in your Friends app under Favorite Groups for quick access. For example, you can see we have favorite groups for Call of Duty, Rocket League, and Destiny.

Communities: PS4 users will have the ability to create communities based around shared interests, like games, genres, and more. Communities include a message board with general discussion, screenshots shared by players, and the ability to join parties / games.

Stickers: From the PS4 system’s Messages app, you’ll see a new option for Stickers. The 3.00 update will contain stickers themed around Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Knack, LittleBigPlanet 3, Resogun, and more. Instead of typing out a message, just send a sticker — like Drake looking at a watch, asking you to wait a minute.”

PS4 System Software Update 3.0

We’re constantly striving to make PS4 even better, and appreciate all the feedback! If you would like to submit an idea on how to improve the PlayStation experience, share it here. We will continue to make PS4 the best place to play.

We hope you enjoy the Kenshin update, and let us know what you think in the comments below!

  • The only thing of value in that whole array is the PSN+ management section, which has been needed for a long time.

The myriad new social features are completely meaningless to me. If I wanted to interact with people it wouldn’t be through a game console. Please focus more on core functionality such as storage expansion. Turning my 500 GB Xbox One into a 3.5 TB Xbox One was as simple as plugging in an external drive for less than $100, without giving up use of the 500 GB drive I’d already paid for.

At the very least, Sony should offer a model with a 2 TB drive factory installed to minimize the waste and expense. Yes, I could put the 500 GB drive in an enclosure but I have plenty of those left from the days when a 500 GB was worth buying. So why not let those who know they want the maximum internal storage from day one simply have it for the appropriate price?

  • How about the ability to set our own “Wallpapers” like the PS3 was able to do?

  • Home page customization please. I want to organize my stuff and not have to deal with the Video page bumping to the top of the list when an irrelevant app I don’t even use gets an update.

  • Nothing on if we can set our online status to invisible??

  • the ability to use my wireless headphones, its 2015 for christ sake… ps3 had the ability to reconise bloothtooth headphones why can’t the PS4

    • I use wireless headphones on ps4 and have been since like a few months after the ps4 was released. They even sell wireless headphones.

  • One feature I’ve always been hoping for and would be easy to implement would be a “quick launch” feature. For someone who only uses netflix, the game on the disc in the machine, and youtube, it would be nice if holding the middle button would give you easy access to a select few programs/apps/games which the user chooses. Along with the usual quit game/turn off system features.

  • Another useless update for me, Im really tired of Sony pushing this social BS. I feel like every new feature they have updated has been a dud. Friends you may know, trophy screenshot… I wish I could turn them all off. Where are the folders, pins, or any sort of dashboard customization options that fans have been asking for since launch? And dont even get me started on the library, mine is a mess right now. Also, I don’t need or want PS+ accessible from the home screen when its already two clicks away in the store. Just more useless Icon clutter. I wish Sony was more like Microsoft when it comes to FW updates. Now to wait 6 more months for the next one.

    • Every modern electronics device has social networking abilities. This is the era of the internet. Even online gaming is all about being social.

You don’t like livestreaming games to YouTube or Twitch?

    • Yea what he said, where have you been for the last 3-4 years. All things are social, the prospect of “Gaming with Friends” social, co-op, online gaming, MMO? Arcades? Not to offend you, but yea, it’s not social BS and every company has it, as you mentioned Microsoft uh hm “Party Chat”. Yeah, let Sony continue please

  • how about you increase the damn trophy lvl cap
and also to be able to block group invites which are filled with spam
or atleast let us accept being invited to a room with 1000 ppl and not just throw us in there without approval

  • Folders please, PLEASE. Other than that, looking forward to the events thing and glad for the extra save storage :3

    • Seriously, I don’t understand how the PS4 doesn’t have folders for organizing your games. XMB on the PSP and PS3 had a bit of a backdoor way to do it (put the folder title in the “Information” section, then group it by that), why can’t they give it to us on PS4.

  • I’ve submitted my idea on Share, but I would also like to elaborate a bit further due to the 200 character limit.

My suggestion is something I believe Sony can pull off. That idea is a ‘display name’ option.

I am more than aware that changing our PSN IDs is not possible to you guys at Sony, however, I find it hard to believe that giving us the option to change our display names (our name that shows up in multiplayer games as an example) is labeled as ‘impossible’.

A prime example of this is Steam. Similar to PSN, you cannot change your account name (same in this case, our PSN ID), but you have the flexibility to have a different name displayed to others in multiplayer games by going into the display name option available. What is even more impressive is that whatever name changes you do is recorded onto your profile and players can see what names you changed previously. All of this, without having to go through that barrier of changing our account IDs.

As for anything offensive, simply filter the words out.

    • I’ve had my name from the start. I can’t understand why anyone would want to change/hide their real PSN ID unless they are up to no good.. and I’m not saying that you are just trying to understand where you are coming from. I think if you wanted to go with your ideal that is fine however put a limit on how many time you can change it in a set amount of time. I know that Japan Had that option with their ID’s and people would abuse them so Sony took it away.

    • Charge people for changing their ID’s; this is something mandatory in software to be able to create, read, update, or deactivate (depends on context). Not being able to change your ID and on top of that having an account that cannot be upgraded to a master account is just poor design.

Are you really going to justify poor design with an argument about something to hide is beyond me?

  • So glad Somy is totally obsessed with everything social but doesn’t give a damn about the core UI that just broken. An endless line of icons to constantly have to scroll back and forth that includes tons of crap I like the camera app that I have no interest in. Oh and the “library” section that has screwup a like showing the Hulu app under games and still loss the Destiny beta even though it’s pointless now.

So disappointing to see the Sony get so lazy with fixing the most basic issues while they obsess over every freaking thing social…

    • I agree 100% it’s mind boggling how they continue to ignore these simple things all while layering on these useless social features.

    • Totally agree. I honestly do not recommend the PS4 to friends anymore, it has more missing features than the PS3!

  • Meh, Decent Update, but it doesn’t FEEL like a 3.0 to me.

    • It totally does not feel like a major release. These features are aimed to a very small group of people. Most of us will not even care about these additions.

  • Cool additions, but how about being able to better organize our home screens/libraries? And external hard drive support for game installs is a must with all the digital goodness nowadays!

  • The ability to appear offline is an extreme privacy problem. What’s the logic behind always broadcasting your activity to your friends list?

  • Is the 10gb bump for storage 10gb across PS3, PS4 and Via, 10gb just for PS4 or 10gb for all 3 platforms = 30gb total? Thanks in advance. Tell PowerHouse BEYOND!

  • Still waiting on a name change feature. All the listings I saw were closed topics. You shouldn’t close something until you fix it.

  • We still need a better way to organize games and apps. Ability to use any bluetooth headset, ability to appear offline, ability to change PSN name.

  • I’m happy about the huge increase to cloud storage for Plus members. Very helpful. And I’m sure I’ll use some of the new social/community features, thank you. I would like to watch or let friends watch gameplay, without streaming for the world to see and write juvenile comments.

This post is about new features on PS4, not the other platforms, I understand. However, I agree with the suggestion that the awesome button remapping feature be brought to the PS3. I have an imported PS3 and the X/O swap would really be great. I kept my PS3’s so I can still play my PS3 games.

PSN name change was already addressed officially, by the SCEA president. They won’t allow it because it would enable griefing. Those of us who play competitive multiplayer online games know there are a lot of idiots who only play to ruin other people’s fun. If Sony allowed name change, they would have to increase the blocking player feature to 1000 names. Yes, it is unfortunate for nontrolls who just chose embarassing user names but we are warned that we can never change the name when we create accounts.

    • You can turn this off in the settings

    • That’s no excuse, if it’s set up properly you have a user name and a sign in name (or a user id that stays constant), any blocking would be tied to the sign in name, which you don’t need to know, and if someone changed their screen name it would have no effect on blocking at all.

Steam allows you to change your screen name willy nilly with absolutely no effect on your friends list or blocked players list.

  • I would like the ability to turn off that automatic trophy screenshots. It is a nice feature admit but I don’t share my earned trophies and I take normal screenshots a lot of gaming moments and having to fish through all the trophy screenshots is very time consuming and inconvenient. Please Sony let me turn this off or just remove it entirely.

    • Hi breakend28, you can do this by hitting the Share button, then Option button, then go to Share Settings > Screenshot Settings

      Hope this helps.

  • I been with Playstation for long time sense PSone to now and PS4 new features some of them are good and the rest is joke. YouTube Live Steaming is okay, we want External hard drive support, backwards compatible with PSone, PS2, and PS3 games on PS4 plus drop PS Now its joke. WE shouldn’t have to repaid for are PS3 games again when we have them as disc or download on are PSN Accounts, all are PS3 icon’s we brought on PS3 should be on PS4 so we can keep using them, and finally this update should be tested 24/7 before it rolls out so we won’t get brick PS4 or problems with the update.

    • you preaching to the Choir yo. Well maybe one of these days … perhaps there could have been something via PSNow .. ah well … as for the GUI Updates and the new functionality … I think they are cool but pet peeves I have with the OS are so minor I doubt they will ever get fixed … glad boys at Sony give it some kind of attention though – there’s always room to improve and grow

  • Is Sony ever going to add notifications for when friends come online? I get that some people may have a ton of friends and not want the notifications all the time, but this is a feature I imagine could easily be turned on or off (or even customized further). Last I heard Sony said that they are working on it and don’t want just a cut a paste PS3 version….. this was over a year ago.

  • This all honestly sounds stupid with extremely limited usefulness.

  • I took part in the beta program, and despite repeated suggestions, we still have:

    1. No online friend notifications.
    2. No easily accessible Library folder (it shouldn’t be rocket science to move it at the start of the application bar, instead of at the far end).
    3. No alternative screenshot upload service (PSBlog has Flickr, PS4 v3 has crappy Twitter).
    4. No sorting options for trophies (especially when comparing with friends).

Thanks Sony for taking your customer base so seriously.

    • Well given Sony’s horrible track record for not listening to it’s fans… I mean where is that HDCP toggle option? Why don’t we have a DLNA Media Server yet? Why can’t I play my own music during games? It’s just obscene to think any of what you mentioned could possibly me implemented in a future update. Here, instead, they’re just wasting our time with useless things like digital PSN “subreddits” for games so I can just find a Destiny Raid community and hop right into the action instead of spending time on Destiny LFG websites and cell phone apps.

      It’s just so unacceptable. :P

    • I don’t get why they ask the most important people
( us ) for feedback and suggestions and completely ignore most, especially the things that seems that the majority wants. I.e name changing. It doesn’t make sense. It doesn’t make sense. It’s almost a contradiction.

  • I don’t get all the people complaining about YouTube and Twitch functionality. Broadcasting and making Let’s Play videos have been standard in the gaming industry for the past 10 years. This is a new generation of video games, one that’s more connected and social than ever.

  • The fact that this thread appears to be bugged beyond reason probably is a sign I should hold off upadating so Sony doesn’t brick my 400 dollar Ps4 with a bunch of social garbage I don’t want.

  • The fact that this thread appears to be bugged beyond reason probably is a sign I should hold off upadating so Sony doesn’t brick my 400 dollar Ps4 that already doesn’t do much with a bunch of social garbage I don’t want.

  • Why are you guys all complaining about YouTube and Twitch functionality? These days people love to broadcast their games and make Let’s Play videos. Twitch alone is a hugely successful platform for gamers, and many people actually make money doing that.

Having it all built into the console makes it much easier to use those services.

  • PS Blog techs… I think your comments are a bit messed up. Replies to comments are in white and unreadable unless highlighted.

  • Notifications that your friends log in and out? Cmon Sony 2015 man. Same with avatars on PS4? Avatars and notifications your friends logged in and out cmon! and everything bought on ps store should function on ps4, cent vita exclusive content, ps1 ps2 classics should be working by now! Please and thank u!

  • I just want my console to bring up access to the PlayStation store and load “What’s New” when I bring it out of sleep mode. Instead, I usually have to restart the console. My Xbox 360 never had a problem like this.

  • So does this update go live tonight at midnight or later in the day. Just curious in case it pops up while I’m gaming tonight. Looking forward to this update, keep up the awesome job Sony.

  • Will this update fix the stupid discover notification that keep popping up every time I turn on my PS4. It tired seeing the same thing popping up every time I turn on my PS4. I already know how to use rest mode and other features on the PS4. Don’t need the STUPID notification discover to remind me every freaking time I boot up my PS4!!!

  • 2features I want are to be able to see how much time played I have in games and trophy progress ex say you need 100kills you have 75/100kills for trophy

  • Will this update fix that annoying DISCOVER notification that keep popping up every time I turn on my PS4. I already know how to use my power option and many other features in my PS4. Don’t need it to pop up and remind me every time I power up my PS4. It’s very freaking annoying!!!!!!!!!!

  • Awesome!!!!!!!

  • I power down my PS4 after I play games. I have auto login set to on. Every time I finish playing games, i have to manually log out and back in to get my saves to upload to the cloud. Is this normal behavior and if so, does this update fix it?

  • When will we be able to change our PSN names?

  • this is the worst “big” update in history. i’d bet money that the events tab will be 90% destiny stuff and/or rarely updated. i don’t need to list the stuff that should be in the update, it’s all over the internet. sony just needs to pull it’s head out of it’s ass and see it

  • I’ll at least try out the new features. And more cloud storage is always welcome!

  • Play station please read two features I want are the ability to see how much time played I have in a game and second trophy progress ex say I need 100 c4 kills for trophy you have 75/100 c4 kills simple feature

  • Well…it’s official, The gaming industry has gone to hell in a handbasket!!!

  • Please add a paint program that playes can use to livestream their artwork over the network. I can see a big online community of artists growing around such a service.

  • I would like there to be an option so that it isnt advertised that I make a public party. I get people joining when they press that PS button once it pops up. Generally the younger kids I know you can turn off notifications when seeing others made a public chat party – but I want it so I dont send out such a thing. Its easier to have public parties for when you are about to party with friends who come on after you, and they just jump in when ready. This is helpful so I dont need to first read a message saying “Im ready now, invite me”.

  • What about Accessibility?

  • PLEEEEAASE SONY PLEEEAAASE MAKE ONLINE FREE IM CRYING AND SHOUTING FROM THE TOP OF MY LUNGS SO U MAKE ONLINE MULTIPLAYER FREE I mean i was one of the first people to buy a ps4 and i was so excited about it but i got sooo disappointed to hear that the ps4 online multiplayer wasnt for free so think of it i mean people would not buy the ps4 just for its features or graphics or bo3 but even for its free online maybe even xbox fans will buy a ps4 so just think of it you can keep your ps plus offers and deals but at least make online for free AWESOME_D_- the BIGGEST sony fan since 1997 PEACE.

  • It angers me almost beyond words that despite REPEATED requests from pretty much your ENTIRE community, you still point blank refuse to let users organise their games in to folders. It really takes the p*ss.

  • Well it’s official, The gaming industry has gone to hell in a handbasket!!!

  • Hey not for nothing, I may not use twitter and stuff but communities straight on PlayStation sounds like a good alternative. I am really hopeful for some more apps to be released too. Ps4 still worth the money peeps, very cool.

  • Well it’s official, The gaming industry has gone to h*ll in a handbasket!!!

  • I was wondering in addition to all of that stuff. Will the Playstation 4 3.0 update series will greatly improve wi-fi connectivity with the Modem regardless of ISP. As well as improving quality in connection to the internet via PS4.
