Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition on PS4: New Details

Greetings to the PlayStation community! Hideaki Itsuno of Capcom here. As you may know, Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition is set to release in the summer of 2015, some seven years after the launch of the original game back in January 2008 to a positive reception from fans of the series. The original Devil May Cry 4 was actually Capcom’s very first title for PS3.

This year Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition will make its way to PlayStation 4 with new modes, gameplay and visual improvements, and the largest roster of playable characters in any Devil May Cry game to date.

Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition on PS4: New Details

One of the biggest new attractions in Special Edition is that you will be able to play as Vergil, who has proven to be an extraordinarily popular character amongst fans. For his appearance in Special Edition, we’ve used his Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening Special Edition rendition as a gameplay foundation, and added in elements of his DmC rendition to create the definitive version of the character.

We’ve also added in a brand new “Concentration” mechanic, which complements Vergil’s signature “iaijutsu” fighting style, making his attacks grow stronger and stronger the more calmly and flawlessly he fights. Additionally, the “Grim Trick” ability, which allows Vergil to teleport using his “Sword Illusions,” makes for an action experience that will feel new and distinctly different from that of Nero or Dante.

We also decided that we wanted to make Lady and Trish playable for the Special Edition. On top of the already playable Nero and Dante from the original game, this makes for a total of five playable characters in the game.

Lady, who is a playable character for the first time in the series, has a fighting style that is conceptually quite different from that of the other DMC4 characters, with a special emphasis on firearms. Lady’s focus on long-range fighting will feel like a completely different way to take on the action.

When playing as Trish, you will see that she does away with weapon switching, and instead makes skillful use of the Sparda sword in a variety of ways that require the use of relatively few buttons. This again makes for a play style that will feel distinctly different from anything you’ve seen in the game until now.

“Legendary Dark Knight Mode,”a feature we were previously unable to include in the PS3 version, will be added to the game. This mode pits players against a tremendous number of enemies. Players will have to adjust their fighting style to adapt, making for a fresh gameplay experience for even long-time fans.

The game will also feature a plethora of new costumes, which are fully compatible with in-game cutscenes, bringing a fresh look to scenes some fans may have seen before.

It’s a great honor to be able to bring Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition to PS4. Stay tuned for more information, and please look forward to a fun game with tons of content this summer, whether you’re a stylish seven-year veteran or a newcomer to the series.

  • FINALLY! WOOO HOOOOOO My favourite game series back on track with the REAL DANTE!!! HYPEEEEEE!!!!

Devil May Cry 5 at E3 Itsuno? Let’s rock Baby!

  • Finlay a Real DMC NOT THAT PIECE OF ##########

I am really looking forward to this playing as Virgil and Trish on DMC 4 will be really nice

now we can see the REAL DANTE on HD xD

  • My Ultimate DMC Wishlist:
    1. Devil May Cry 5 for PS4, co-developed by Platinum Games (Ala Metal Gear Rising) and even better, directed by Hideki Kamiya himself.
    2. DMC Collection for Vita (60 FPS, and make it downloadable only to avoid any downgrading or file size restrictions for Vita cards)
    3. Never screw the loyal DMC fans over again. We just want the original Dante done right so the franchise can return to its glory days.

  • This is the only remaster that matters.

3 extra characters? Unreal. I can’t wait for Vergil.

  • As someone who rightly came into Devil May Cry with DmC, reading about these new playable characters, and especially the incorporation of game-making acumen gained since DMC4’s debut (namely, of DmC Virgil influencing his based DMC3 playstyle), I am actually looking toward this game now (something about the lack of trophies before and my lacking experience in the series prior, which would be corrected by the HD Collection had the titles been downloadable individually instead of an 11GB install…but now I’m rambling).

tl;dr – These new characters and tweaks from extended developer experience excites me.

  • Yes this makes up for not patching trophies into the PS3 version. Your sins are forgiven. :P

  • Great! Can’t wait for this to come out. The REAL Dante is back!

  • Is the PS4 version digital only? If this is the case the the game hold no value to me.

  • SO MUCH YES!!! Thank you for bringing my FAV DMC game to my FAV console! Take my money now and gimmie! plz plz plz

  • Hey capcom, we’ve heard it’s planned only as a digital only download. THIS IS NOT GOING TO WORK!.

Lots of us are close or completely full in our ps4 hard drives and can’t afford a new hard drive. So we really really need a physical version of this game in north America, otherwise lots of fans won’t be able to buy it and enjoy it.

As a huge devil may cry fan, I’m begging you for a physical release of dmc4 SE.

  • I hope for a sequel to the original series. Personally I liked Devil May Cry 3 and 4 the best and I can’t stand the new DmC Dante. So maybe it’s time for a real continuation of the series?

  • I need More POWER!!!

  • Yeah !!!!!

Finally this is the real Dante and Vergil that it love n_n. no the other ****… of DmC ¬_¬! thats all crap.

I am a true fan of the series of Devil May Cry (my favorite is the “Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening” followed by 4) and honestly DmC (Ninja theory) was a big mistake congratulations Capcom for this decision and bring back this awesome game with additional characters .

Im so exciting for this, i can’t wait to play it. =)

  • Oh! I’m down with Remasters… When they’re done right.

When a Last Gen Remaster DMC reboot looks better on the 40% less capable competitor’s hardware (xbone) than the more capable Ps4, we’ve a problem.

Place the effort to take advantage of the PS4 hardware and make sure Anisotropic Filtering (AF) is applied. The lack of it is TOTALLY INEXCUSABLE.

I’ll hope for the best and expect a much better effort than the last Capcom remaster ’cause i would love a Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen Remastered on PS4 at 1080p 60fps, photo mode ect ect.

I prefer my copies retail. Thank you

    My .02

  • Oh just noticed something, I thought Lost Planet Extreme Condition was the first Capcom title on PS3 which added the Mega Man skin, but came out before the trophy support was added. DM4 actually released after trophies in the US. Just curious on that.

  • While I am upset that the NA version will be digital only, hopefully the price will be $40 New or cheaper to make up for that.

Anyways, when will you be revealing the official release date? (MM/DD/YYYY)

  • Well this is rather disappointing…
second game that I won’t be able to play because its coming out on the PS4
Makes me just not want to play any games on the PS anymore -.-

  • I liked DmC but didn’t love it. I got really tired of fighting with the camera all of the time.

  • “NEW gameplay”? For your own sake that better doesn’t mean CASUALIZED; and it better have NEW story modes for the NEW characters.

Anyway, I won’t fall for this. I know this doesn’t mean you’re “testing the waters” to prove that fans really want a DMC 5.
You’re just really desesperate, and of course you will take advantage of your fans. OBVIOUSLY.
Besides the real talents already moved on and have been working with much better companies.

(I remember when you had to sell DmC: F*** You WITH DMC4 on Steam so people would actually BUY that bundle, but of course it was only for DMC4.)

  • Now that’s a REAL Devil May Cry game. Played DMC4 a ton on the PS3, Can’t wait to get my hands on this edition!

  • Looks great, I will wait for the physical version however. This deserves better than digital only.

  • Please release the physical edition for US.

  • Atleast now we get more characters like LADY and TRISH atop with VERGIL’s swordsmanship

1080p with 60 fps rendering should make this game look more polished

They mentioned new levels and the Dark Knight format going against hordes of demons

Definetely getting day1 when pre-order comes avail !

  • Ok then. That’s what the hell i’m talking about. This is exactly what The Devil May Cry series and the fans deserve. If there are any more reboots, please remake the original. Which is still one the very best games i have played but this is a great news. 5 playable characters… is just pretty awesome. I’ve been a fan since Trish first walked throught the doors. Thank you very much Capcom

  • Oh great…another definitive edition. The only reason I got DMC Devil May Cry DE was I hadn’t played it before. But DMC4, that looks exactly like the ps3 version. Maybe smoother is all you can do because it sure doesn’t look better than the ps3 version. So you can play with extra characters, but that’s not going to be enough for me to get it again.

  • i wish it was for ps3 i guess i have to buy ps4 just to get this game

  • I’m freakin’ thrilled that this is happening, but the only thing that could potentially ruin this is the fact that Capcom JP has decided that only Japan gets a retail release as well as digital. I mean, what the hell, Capcom?

There IS a petition out to try to get Capcom JP to get its crap together and give all the other countries a retail copy too. If anyone wants to sign it, it’s here:

Maybe Sony could help us by putting in a good word. How about it, Sony?
