PlayStation, Meet Spotify

Hello everyone! I’m thrilled today to introduce a new music destination called PlayStation Music, with Spotify as the exclusive partner. We’ve partnered with our friends at Spotify to bring its award-winning digital music service to PlayStation Network this spring in 41 markets around the world.

PlayStation Music + Spotify

We know how important music is to our community of gamers, and this partnership combines the best in music with the best in gaming. PlayStation Network users will enjoy the convenience of linking your accounts to Spotify, making it easy to sign-up with your existing ID and subscribe to Spotify’s Premium service. You can also use Spotify while playing games on PS4, enabling you to soundtrack your gaming sessions with your favorite songs in the background. Want something heavy and rocking for an intense Destiny Raid? How about some old school hip hop while taking the field in Madden NFL? With more than 30 million songs and 1.5 billion playlists, Spotify on PlayStation Music has it covered. As we get closer to launch we look forward to telling you about some of the other great features that will be available exclusively through Spotify on PlayStation Music.

The new service will launch initially on PS4 and PS3, as well as Xperia smartphones and tablets. You’ll of course be able to listen to your favorite playlists – including existing playlists from current Spotify users as well as Spotify curated playlists – and enjoy the service on all of Spotify’s supported devices.

Prior to the launch of Spotify on PlayStation Music, the Music Unlimited service will close in all 19 countries on March 29, 2015. Nearly all of these countries will be among the 41 markets where PlayStation Music featuring Spotify will be available at launch, including the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Brazil. From February 28, 2015, Music Unlimited users with active subscriptions will receive up to 30 days of free access through March 29, 2015.

Stay tuned to PlayStation.Blog for more details on PlayStation Music featuring Spotify, and in the meantime you can sign up for updates here.

  • I’m happy to be able to play music someway anyhow on my ps4, also can we have it for the vita. No use for it being on ps tv because we can just remote play the ps4.
    LOOKING FOR FRIENDS ama NOOB!

  • Great job Sony! Now add DLNA and we’ll all rejoice.

  • Will our MU profiles transfer over to Spotify? I’ve never used Spotify but I am assuming that its services are similar in nature if MU is being shut down as a result of this change. I built up quite the library on MU and it will be very disheartening to learn that I will have to “re-acquire” all of my albums in this new service.

  • Will Spotify be available (at some point) on the Ps Vita? Or, perhaps, will the vita retain its current version of music unlimited?

Yes most Vitas are wifi, but Music Unlimited as well as Spotify can play in offline mode.

So you don’t need the wi fi to be available if you make sure to sync your Vita just before you go out so that your music is offline as well.

I think the Vita may be coming for Spotify; they’re most likely still working on the APP to make it work.

If you go Premium on Spotify, you also can have high quality sound….same as MU.

  • How about giving us more games for us gamers… That is what the PS4 is about isn’t it?

  • I’m already a Spotify Premium subscriber. Will there be an additional cost to use this app on my PS4?

  • Any chance that the playlists in Music Unlimited will be transferred over to the new Playstation Music service?

  • Soooooooooooooooooo, what about Vita? Will there be a Playstation Music app for that as well?

  • I actually really liked MU service and I’m sad to see it go. Is the mobile team planning on integrating Spotify into their Walkman app on the phones like MU was? I’ll be surpised if they do.

  • Sick!! This is great news, and a really smart move for Sony. Thank you!

  • What about those who have a music unlimited account? Should we cancel or will our plan carry over?

It will be phased out and the last 30 days will be free access per Sony’s statement on this Blog

  • I must admit, I hate that you are getting rid of music unlimited. :( I will miss that service greatly.

  • I have been wishing for this every day ps4 has been out and wondered why it hadn’t happened yet.

Thank you for being the best system and making my purchase of this system completely worth it now. I love having spotify and its premium service. nothing like it and have thousands of songs, cant wait to add it to my online experience :D.

  • + againes Have you ever used the free version of spotify? It’s pretty great.

  • This is the best news I’ve heard all day. Thank you!

  • Add a Google Music app so I can download mp3s to my ps3 & Vita

  • When will it be available in the UK?

  • Would I be able to pay my spotify subscription trough my SEN wallet?

  • 232: 1. There is usb audio… and Spotify is free or sub.

@248: Go through and screencap them, it’s still there for awhile.

  • Tremendous news!

  • Finally! Music that I don’t need to pay.

  • I will miss the service. guess is back to old fashioned radio. getting tired of internet anyway

  • Will you be able to control what is playing on your PlayStation using Spotify Connect?

  • Tbh, we should just discontinue the Vita all together. It’s obviously a bunch of babies who own them anyways. I’m tired of youuuuuuuuuuuuu >_<

But SUUUUUUGAR HONEY ICED TEA am I stoked for Spotify on my PS4!! Meow I can have a no pants trance party when I game :3 sank yew!

  • will i be able to transfer my existing playlists from music unlimited to the spotify?

  • Will you be able to play music in the background while you are playing PS3 games?

  • Hey guys, we would really like to have this on our beloved Vita’s
Considering how you could port so many PS games to Vita, this is hopefully easier than to use completely other tech for phones.
Show your existing customers some love, that our investment and believing in you guys were right, and we will stay forever loyal!

  • Will we be able to edit and create playlists on the consoles?

  • Spotify while playing destiny would be awesome, except for one thing. SOMEONE SHOULD TELL BUNGIE THAT YOU CAN’T TURN THE BACKGROUND MUSIC OFF

  • Cool, is it in the music unlimited app do we need the full music unlimited version?

  • Best news I’ve heard since getting my PS4, anyone who fancies a game on FIFA 15 feel free to add me!

  • Will Spotify Connect be supported?

  • Will users still be able to save an offline playlist as one could in MU for times with no internet access? And if not, will the premium service be cheaper than premium MU to compensate for the removal of two major features: offline play and Vita support?

  • I hate to hear Music Unlimited will be shutting down because I’ve been using that service since it launches and I love it. I’m willing to give this new thing a try, but please don’t exclude Vita from this service.(or ps tv for that matter). I’ve spent more hours using MU on my Vita than I have on my ps4 or ps3

  • well my placewell my playlist from Music Unlimited be on Playstation Music

  • Sorry for the mistake I mean will my own playlist from Music Unlimited be on Playstation Music

  • what about my entire cd collection i uploaded on sonys cloud?

  • What will PS Music offer besides Spotify?

    Pandora app?

    HBO Go app?

  • where this service is available on playstation. may pay the premium membership from playstaion store? (I mean spotify)

  • Will i be able to change music with voice control?

  • Any info on when it will be available in australia?

  • Will you be able to play music in the background of the PS3?
And is there a specific date as to when this service will be available?

  • Will there be a PS Vita version of the app? Because I’ve always wanted to Listen to Spotify on My Vita

  • Will PS Music work with the Walkman app on Xperia smartphones the way Music Unlimited currently does?

  • I just signed up for a 30 day Spotify Premium trial. Having been a Music Unlimited subscriber since it first came out and establishing a decent music library on it over those years, I wanted to see what I was in for with this upcoming change. I have to say that I’m extremely unimpressed with Spotify. They are missing full albums that I’ve got in my Music Unlimited library and its not obscure stuff so there’s no reason for Spotify not to have it. The next thing which annoys me the most is that Spotify content is Geo locked. And I get errors on some songs which play no problem on MU along with a message saying the track is not available in my region which is utter BS. All I can say is they better consolidate their music libraries and sort out that region garbage.

  • I love all these people raging. It’s the smartest thing Sony’s ever done practically. haha. Spotify is the biggest thing right now, has a paid AND free version, much simpler interface, and is used by millions and millions. Duh.

I especially love the guy who told Sony they clearly haven’t been listening to us simply because HE doesn’t like it. Moronic dude, 9 out of every 10 comments is praise and happiness about this.
I’d say that yes, they have been listening. lol. Stop your whine fest.

  • Can ANYONE tell us about how many devices can have an offline mode on Spotify? MU had 3.
