PlayStation, Meet Spotify

Hello everyone! I’m thrilled today to introduce a new music destination called PlayStation Music, with Spotify as the exclusive partner. We’ve partnered with our friends at Spotify to bring its award-winning digital music service to PlayStation Network this spring in 41 markets around the world.

PlayStation Music + Spotify

We know how important music is to our community of gamers, and this partnership combines the best in music with the best in gaming. PlayStation Network users will enjoy the convenience of linking your accounts to Spotify, making it easy to sign-up with your existing ID and subscribe to Spotify’s Premium service. You can also use Spotify while playing games on PS4, enabling you to soundtrack your gaming sessions with your favorite songs in the background. Want something heavy and rocking for an intense Destiny Raid? How about some old school hip hop while taking the field in Madden NFL? With more than 30 million songs and 1.5 billion playlists, Spotify on PlayStation Music has it covered. As we get closer to launch we look forward to telling you about some of the other great features that will be available exclusively through Spotify on PlayStation Music.

The new service will launch initially on PS4 and PS3, as well as Xperia smartphones and tablets. You’ll of course be able to listen to your favorite playlists – including existing playlists from current Spotify users as well as Spotify curated playlists – and enjoy the service on all of Spotify’s supported devices.

Prior to the launch of Spotify on PlayStation Music, the Music Unlimited service will close in all 19 countries on March 29, 2015. Nearly all of these countries will be among the 41 markets where PlayStation Music featuring Spotify will be available at launch, including the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Brazil. From February 28, 2015, Music Unlimited users with active subscriptions will receive up to 30 days of free access through March 29, 2015.

Stay tuned to PlayStation.Blog for more details on PlayStation Music featuring Spotify, and in the meantime you can sign up for updates here.

  • So the $10 monthly payment I make to music unlimited will automatically migrate to playstation music?

  • There needs to be a quicker way to change songs and volume while playing a game, even if its a remote or second controller

  • Why would I choose Spotify over Pandora?

  • Yet another fee/subscription based app on PS4 to do what the PS3 did so very well for free….which was USB audio/video/picture support. .

  • Does my existing Music Unlimited library transfer over to the new service? I have a lot of songs on a lot of playlists, I really don’t want to loose all that.

  • I am wondering also if my playlist will migrate over to playstation music

  • While I do think this is very cool just as I thought Plex support was cool (more options is NEVER a bad thing) I do agree with everyone else that is borderline frustrates me that my far superior PS4 can’t do what my much weaker PS3 could do for years. If don’t plan on ever letting us have that option then at least come out and say so. I love Playstation and have a lot of respect for Sony Computer Entertainment despite its past mistakes but this isn’t something that I personally can ignore it doesn’t bother me as much as other because my computer is right next to me at pretty much all times but it would be nice to have the option and I definitely feel sympathy for those who aren’t as lucky as me in this regard. Also I am not very happy with SCEs lack of Vita support I still defend the Vita and enjoy the handheld a lot but I can definitely understand peoples problems with it and in fact they bother me sometimes too aside from awesome coming out way to far apart it also bothers me that your taking away the Youtube app that just isn’t good for public relations as it makes it appear your slowly giving up on supporting the system and it sucks for people like me that use it when I am at a friends house.

  • How will out current library transition from Music Unlimited to Spotify? Will I have to make my library all over again from scratch?

  • I can’t believe people are mad/upset about no Vita support. Considering a large portion of Vita owners are probably now just wi-fi models, I cannot imagine Spotify on Vita being that useful. Considering that they are getting rid of maps and youtube from the Vita, its not too surprising.

  • That’s awesome. Definitely a reason to switch to Spotify. But Google play music is still more beneficial for me :-/ Would love to more streaming services on the ps4.

  • I’ve been a premium member of Music Unlimited for years, and I gotta say, I’m sad to hear of it’s closing. I’ve been continually impressed with it’s amazing amount/collection of songs and albums, including some local and/or obscure bands. I sincerely hope that Spotify compares favorably.

  • ive had music unlimited since it came out it was the only reason i got ps vita this is major b.s. sony

  • I feel like a fool for holding on to hope that you guys will fully support the ps vita. We always seem to be the ones on the outside looking in on the great party you guys are throwing for everyone else(PS3, PS4, and smart phones?)
It’s pretty sad that the system that gets the most play time out of my 3 consoles, is treated so poorly… If you guys don’t want to support it, just say so. I hate this waiting to see if you guys decide to actually give us support. Hard to be in a fully connected ecosystem when your choice of access is swept under the rug.

  • This is great news! Will we be able to have offline songs and playlists as well?

  • let Vita die people.. that way they can focus more on the PS4

  • Que buenoo!!

  • I think this is a great move! I had a Music Unlimited Subscription. I forgot to renew it, though. I tried to but I couldn’t from my PS4. Pain in the butt. Couldn’t listen to music on my system for a while.

  • Oh no, oh no, oh no…

Does this mean we will no longer be able to listen to the most DIVERSE and awesome collection of music on the planet? I listen to a whole lot of music from genres such as world music, Indian classical music and Bollywood music. I have searched far and wide and believe me, no other service comes close to the depth and diversity of your collection.

    Few key questions:
    1. Does this impact music service only on the Play Station? What about other devices on which i have the app installed – iPhone, android tablets, laptops?

    2. Will the new service include Sony’s AWESOME music catalog? (Please say YES!!!!)

Please, please do not discontinue access to your music collection!!!

BTW: I have two accounts in a family of four – because we cant get enough of the music from your collection!

    Cheers,

    Yatin

  • I have to say, this is very interesting news. I just signed up for spotify andfrom what I’ve seen, it looks pretty sweet. Though I’m sad to see Music Unlimited go, at least it’s nice that I can make my inifinite amount of playlists on my PS4. As much as I love my new PS4, I’d love to see it come to Vita as well, for it is my primary console at the moment. Perhaps in the near future once it’s released on PS4, PS3, and Xperia devices. Just saying some more Vita support would be nice.

  • so um when will we be able to play and copy our own music cds? i do love spotify though i’ve been using it for a few years

  • This is awesome!

  • why are people hating? spotify is way better then music unlimited ( in my opinion) and about the vita i haven’t touched mine in a few years i sense a lot of butt hurt in the comments

  • I’ve had Qriocity/Music Unlimited since the beginning. If you know how to use MU, it’s literally the best service out of all of them, aside from Milk Music. I can’t stand Spotify. Google it is.

  • Will Playstation Music still be able to be run through the Walkman app like Music Unlimited currently does?

  • PLAYSTATION MEET TIME LINESMicrosoft

but my heart is getting pulled into the one transparency.

  • come on sony, please hurry up with updates, and with no timeline. What gives man, please stop announcing things like this. >hype

  • “my heart is pulled into the one transparency was talking about the xbox one, ugh this comment system sucks and so does whoever hires. so fire them, but do it through email, Subject: Must fire…. Body: Hiring manager

soooooo be a little more eastern and hippie in your ways Sony.

    Feelings+thought

    Namaste

  • Sweet!!!

  • Consider making a Vita version, please!

  • Tried to download Spotify when I first got my system, but it wouldn’t have the files. Man that was good news, been using Spotify for tree years now, my phone, my tablet… Cool!!!

  • I literally just bought a vita today will it be added?

Yet another subscription/fee based application (PS Now, Plex, Spotify) instead of just giving us what worked so well for free on PS3 (USB audio/video/picture support) with our newly “upgraded & improved” PS4 iteration…

  • This is a bulls*** RIPOFF service Sony, and you know it. I, like many others, already own a vast majority of music. I pay to OWN my music, not to rent it. Just give us the promised MP3 support that the PS3 had to import our music directly to the hard drive and you will make the majority of your diehard supporters happy. Quit rippin us off, and give the people what we already had for FREE on the PS3—–full on MP3 support for our OWN CUSTOM MUSIC

  • How about us with Spotify Unlimited?

  • And is the app going to be available in Denmark? (Forgot to write that in my previous comment)

  • been waiting for this thanks u sony

  • Please add AMAZON PRIME MUSIC. It’s by far the best service since its all inclusive, not to mention totally free if you have a Prime account.

I like how you have all of the free albums, songs, as with other services, but then you also get free Amazon cloud store to upload your own music, then you also have the ability to buy music and have it all stored in one place. Not to mention if you’ve purchased any CDs with “Auto-Rip” then you also get a free digital version in your online collection. These all add up to make a very useful service.

  • Really hate seeing Music Unlimited go. It is by far my most used, and most loved service on Sony Entertainment Network. I hope this rebranding to of all services from Unlimited to Playstation means they will recieve much more attention on Sony’s end.

It would be nice to see the new Playstation Music, and Playstation Video players bring local and DLNA support to PS4.

Also would like to mention, I have streamed Music Unlimited to my 3G Vita 8 hours a day for years now while at work. It would be highly appreciated if you would bring PLAYSTATION MUSIC to the PLAYSTATION VITA as you may have noticed it is a Playstation device, and not an Xperia Android based devices that offers many options outside of PSN that most people will find more appealing. Makes more sense to support the people supporting you, than to offer something to people that have already showed no interest in you services.

  • One last thing for the people calling for Google Music or Amazon Music. This is the only move that made any sense. Amazon and Google were not going to let Sony use them as the back bone of their own service. If either of these companies would have considered doing this they would have just released their own services as Amazon has already done with amazon video on PS4.

With Spotify, Sony can partner up with them, collect their current subscribers into the PSN suite of services, and help them expand. This can be done under the Playstation name, and potentially lead to a future were Sony puchases the company to bring the whole opperation back in house. For now it gives Sony a much larger userbase of people, and a company of people with much better knowledge of how to handle this kind of service. Hopefully, it will lead to cloud storage, digital purchasing, and all of the other great features that would make up the best music service available.

  • Sounds great.

Now, can you please add support for remote controls, specifically the Logitech Harmony? It was so good when that happened on the PS3.

The PS4 now have Plex, Netflix and Spotify and could potentially be THE multimedia box in my living room. However, the absence of a remote is such a let down from Sony. The controller simply isn’t well suited when enjoying media content.

So, from a PS4 fanboy who really don’t wan’t to be jealous of Xbox owners (but is), please get this sorted.

  • you know how you guys said you could listen to music while you play games. Well can you do that on PS4 And PS3

  • I Was in a video chat with a few of my friends on ps3 and a guy named ixrayz told me he was goint to boot me offline and 5 minutes later my internet kept getting booted from around 6pm to 11pm I just want to know HOW do I report this? Playstation told me on the phone to message them on the website but i dont know where to message them :( It is very Unfare because I didn’t even do anything to this ixrayz guy. I have been a member of psn since 2009 and I love ps3 but with all the hackers I cant even trust joinning a video chat on ps3. PLAYSTATION PLEASE!!!!!!! HELP ME!!!!!!!! his online id is IXRAYZ he has been going in and out of video voice chat booin people for fun. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP :( I don’t know where to report this :(

  • Never used MU, and most of my friends say Spotify is really bad. I’ll stick to my USB and put music there instead of using Spotify with ads or even pay for subscriptions. Teaming up with Samsung and putting Milk Music on would be the best music thing you’ll ever do. But major companies never do that so why even mention it? I can give Spotify a try but I’ll probably stick to my USB

  • This will be awesome on PS4 but why its it coming to Xperia smartphones when Spoitfy is already available on smartphones

  • Unless there is a special price for existing PS Plus members, I’ll stick with Google All Access Music. Google even allows uploads of your own songs not in their own inventory.

  • If I am a free Spotify user, will I still be able to use the free service on my PS4 without paying for a premium subscription?

  • after years of dedicated service as a member they do this, WoW sony, you truly don’t care about your customers do you

  • i feel raped, 5 years of $$$$ and creating playlist, I will never remember all those obscure artist.

  • Will we be able to play music via Spotify while playing a game? That would be fantastic.

  • Can you have 3 devices play offline like Music Unlimited? My family love Music Unlimited. Hope this switch keeps the cool features, like offline playback on 3 devices.
