Plex Out Today, Stream Your Personal Media to PS4 and PS3

Plex on PS3, PS4

Hey PlayStation Nation, we have been listening to you and want to share some great news with you. Later on today we’re bringing the Plex service to PS3 and PS4 today in the US, Canada and Latin America. I have actually seen the app in action and it’s pretty sweet.

Plex on PS3, PS4

For those not familiar, Plex organizes all of your personal media, wherever you keep it, so you can enjoy it on any device. Whether it’s your movie and TV show collection, your music library or your photos and home videos, Plex makes all your media beautiful by automatically incorporating movie posters, plot summaries, album covers and descriptions. Plex also allows you to share your media collection across all major platforms and devices as well as with your friends and family. At launch, the app will only allow you to stream your videos, but the ability to stream your music and photos will be coming shortly.

Plex on PS3, PS4

Plex for PlayStation is currently available for free to Plex Pass subscribers. In the future, it will be made available, for a fee, to those without a Plex Pass. In addition to the PlayStation app, a Plex Pass also gives you exclusive premium features and early access to new ones.

  • Plex is the **** been using it on chromecast and my iPhone for months so excited to hear it is finally integrated with the PS4 by way of an app. I also wanted to comment on someone else’s comment “GoPens35” PLEX IS NOT A PAID SERVICE IT IS FREE BUT LIKE MANY SERVICES AND APPS AVAILABLE TODAY THEY OFFER AN UPGRADED VERSION FOR 4$ A MONTH. BUT IF YOU DONT PAY THE APP IS STILL JUST AS GOOD, THE ONLY LOSS IS YOU CANT SYNC DATA TO YOUR PLEX CLOUD SO WHEN YOUR COMPUTER ISNT ON YOU CANT ACCESS YOUR DATA. SO GOPENS35 YOU SHOULD REALLY KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKiNG ABOUT BEFORE WRITING A COMMENT.

  • i’m sorry but i wont be paying a dime now or later in order to stream my stuff from my pc to other devices.the ps3 could do it for free and i dont see why the ps4 cant do it.as it is, the ps tv will be the last sony product that i will ever buy since the direction that you guys are moving is not a pleasant one for consumers like me!

i was expecting for you guys to step up to the plate in terms of features for the ps4 but it seems that it was foolish for your fans to expect it.

  • Now that we have PLEX, you know what’d be awesome? IF WE HAD A BLUETOOTH REMOTE FOR PS4.

  • Pilot License Extension ? ? ?

  • Awesome! Now I wish I had bought the unlimited Plex Pass back before they did the price increase.

  • Blog says it’s for US and. Canada but when I try sign up I get invalid email on on my email addresses. Plus Canada isn’t listed as a country they support. So what’s up with this?

  • “Plex for PlayStation is currently available for free to Plex Pass subscribers. In the future, it will be made available, for a fee, to those without a Plex Pass.” – Ugh, no thanks. I thought this would be a cool alternative way to stream, but the hell with paying for that. I’ll stick to my chromecast.

  • SO happy about this. Did not expect it to come out today.

I seriously don’t get all you whiners.

  • It requires PlexPass which is 4.99$ USD a month, or 39.99$ yearly, or 149.99$ lifetime…

Or we can wait months (or years) for when they release a purchasable app, like on Android or iOS, which will be probably be 5-10 bucks (or probably a lot more…)

It’s sad that devices like the Ouya or the Roku have it for free

    :(

  • I need DLNA with WMA Lossless support. Can Plex decode WMA Lossless audio?

  • Now we see why DLNA hasn’t been enabled. Trying to bleed us just a little bit drier.

  • The first line in this article says,” hey PlayStation nation we have been listening,” but you haven’t. Every time you announce a new feature there is tons of people asking for the ability to upload their own music and even more people asking for DLNA. I don’t know what DLNA means but if that many people in the “PlayStation nation ” want it, then damn it if don’t want it to.

  • This just makes the PS4 better and give me a reason to buy Plex.

  • ….Will it play my mkv files on my computer? I’m sure a lot of people want to know this.

  • Oh wait… Plex costs money? You’re telling me that in the past I could just use a PS3 media Server for free… and now you want me to PAY for that feature?! Hahaha… no. We pay for PSN Plus… we’re FORCED to now unlike before. There’s no way you can expect people to buy into this crap. Also, where the hell are the demos for PS4? I haven’t seen hardly anything. And the ones I do see are uninteresting indie things. Any programmers out there reading this comment, I’m sure we could develop a work-around and create a free PS4 media server just like before.

  • why do i have plex on 2 of my smart tvs in my house and it works for free but to get it to work on ps4 it cost money?

  • I was psyched for this until I saw that I had to pay to stream my own stuff… no thanks. I’ll stick with my Ouya or my PS3 for that. I’m surprised paying to stream media to a $400+ console is still a thing. XBOX One can do it for free.

  • This is so dumb. Why would I pay monthly for this on my ps4 or xbox one. When on my xbox I can access everything from my PC on the xbox media app for free. Or just just put all my movies and music on a usb or external hdd and hook it up to my xbox for free. I don’t get what the point of plex is and why you would pay for it. I guess if you only have a ps4 it’s good since you can’t play downloaded movies off a usb on ps4.

  • Hell I’m still syched. .. now how about my planet side beta I haven’t received notification yet

  • I’m a paid Plex Pass user and the service offers more than just media on your console. It’s integrated across all devices and curates your media by getting metadata from the internet. Trailers, plot lines, posters and theme music all combines for a pretty kick ass experience. I would definitely recommend it.

  • @PS_IN_MY_BLOOD
“and curates your media by getting metadata from the internet”
Why would anyone want the internet to know all the media they have on their computer? Sounds like a pirate’s nightmare for $5 a month. All the **** you mentioned you can find for free online from youtube and rotten tomatoes, no one in their right mind would pay for that.

  • If I need to have my PC on in order to stream content to my PS4 I may as well use my PC to watch content directly on my TV for free <_<, nice try.

  • I’m using plex for a year and I like it. I hope they will fix the massive security hole in the server. I would love ssl suport!

  • I HAVE TO PAY TO STREAM FROM MY FVCK!NG PC??? you gotta to love greed.

Put the damn pass on plus for crying out loud….

I hope the future youre talking in the article is next week, cos this is a really d!ck move on your part….

  • Installed this at Christmas when I got the PS4, so I guess it’s been out a while already, in Europe at least.

It was free to download – I have PlexPass but I don’t see how the PSN Store would know that. Bit of a clunky interface but it works well and I’m sure it’ll improve quickly, Plex are pretty quick with improvements.

  • So another subscription faced app that the PS3 is more than capable to do these things without. Way to look very money motivated Sony. PS4 is suppose to be a lot better in all aspects, some key features peoplw want back that you took away and now adding for a fee for it? Ill keep my money I have better options than plex. PSN users wake up and smell the beans though!!!

Luckily I care about game quality first, or I’d start investing more in the counterpart. No go for Plex.

On media topic Snagfilms is a joke. Indi version of crackle. 5x the ads, in phone video quality. Looks good on the phone. Not ready for consoles.

  • Is there any chance that this app also supports channels? I am using the NFL Channel to watch games via Plex, works on the browser but not in the app.

  • DLNA solves everything but like most people have said, Sony wont make money off of that. My NAS has a Plex app on it that i tried but with true uncompressed streaming direct to any DLNA enabled device, it is worthless and slows things down.

I never paid for Plex. I dont think you have to pay to use it on normal devices, except Sony needs their piece of the pie so you will have to pay for fake DLNA on the PS4. I just dont think Plex is worth paying for when there are a ton of programs that can stream over your network except if you have a PS4 (LOL I am SO glad I have not bought one yet)

  • I’m sure you don’t have to pay. I remember now, Plex was just available as a free download in the TV menu on the PS4. Plex requires a Plex Media Server but this is also free on the Plex download page.

  • i need a second job to afford all theses subscriptions. I would at least like to TRY plex before i dish out even MORE money just so i can enjoy all my ps4’s features.

  • This might be an alternative way of streaming videos but what about the DNLA!? Is this just a bandage to cover up the wound that you made about not having DNLA support? We need to be able to watch are movies and music on flash drives or other devices freely on the PS4! It is simple and to put this app out there is only another slap in the face on why you haven’t came out with the right form of DNLA like the PS3 and XBOX has! Come on Sony/Playstation, Get with today’s technology instead of giving us fake hopes with this decoy App!

  • nice substitute, but DLNA is still being asked for by a lot. please make it happen (although ive been hearing rumors next update might include DLNA….)

  • I hope so^

  • wtf sony? if you dont fix this for free AND have ads somewhere and pay them or the ps4 will get hacked and evreybody will get free games and GET our own DNLA im tired man.

  • Wow! This is great news. I use Plex all the time on my roku and have been hoping this would come to the PS4 since launch.

  • Forget it. Aint no way im paying another monthly fee to access content I already own. Just noticed that at the end of the article. Got too excited and jumped the gun. Sony should just give us dlna. Its rather annoying that an 8th gen console doesn’t already have this baked in from launch.

  • $5/month for something you can get it for free with DLNA?

The features it comes with $5/month doesn’t really impress me. Plex cloud is just a middleware, not a cloud storage. You need your own cloud storage to make it work.

  • yea AND its going to use OUR internet bandwitch wtf.. my cloud storage is my 20 terrabytes pc im pissed all this waiting for this? and nothing

  • i just tried it really wants you to pay bro we can start sharing accounts of thats what they want and HAVE 2 PCs sharing

  • What about a Spotify app that would let us stream music over the games we’re playing!? :D Pleaseeeeeee make it happen. That would be the best.

  • People, don’t rant at Plex for being a paid middleware. Plex brings a lot more to the table than simple DLNA support. It is a nice piece of software, and it provides MORE than what simple DLNA can provide.

    BUT…

It’s not without its annoyances. The need to run the server app on a PC (or an expensive NAS unit that not many people may have) is only adding useless network traffic for many. If your files are stored on your PC, fine. But if, like me, you have network-attached HDDs storing all your media, it means all files are sent trough the network to your PC (Plex server), and then sent AGAIN through the network to your PS4. That’s ridiculous.

Simple DLNA support would simply allow my PS4 to access my network HDDs directly and play my content. And really, that’s all I want.

I’m not saying Plex is bad. Far from it. Just that it’s completely stupid to have Plex available without any other form of free, standard DLNA support. If people want to pay for Plex and its features, fine! But having Plex as the SOLE solution for streaming our media on the PS4 is kind of insulting.

  • This whole thing smells of business decisions taken to maximize profits instead of giving consumers satisfaction. I’m not saying that’s what happenned, but in my mind, this looks like Sony delaying any DLNA support functionalities for the PS4 so that Plex would get a better chance at getting new paid subscriptions.

Maybe Plex didn’t want to spend time developping a PS4 app without any form of “profitability guarantee” from Sony. And what is more profitable than being the ONLY solution for streaming your media on the PS4?

People, if you don’t care about all the nice features Plex offers (and yes, Plex is nice, I just hate that it’s the ONLY official solution to stream my videos to the PS4), and don’t mind installing a server app on your PC, please, google “hfs http file server”. It’s a small piece of software that will create a simple webpage, hosted on your PC, listing all the files/folders you tell it to list. Then, just use the PS4 web browser (or the Vita’s, or any other web browser) and type in your PC IP address to access all your stuff.

  • RE4LNOiZE_42,

What kind of NAS do you have? Plex do support a certain NAS devices, ex. ReadyNAS.

As for ‘don’t rant’ comment. I can see monthly fee for Netflix because of stream service they provide but I don’t see why would anyone pay monthly fee for its ‘features’. I would pay $10 for the software but $5/monthly doesn’t make sense to me.

  • Ok, I think I understand. It must check the Plex Pass membership when you link the device to your Plex account. Reading the Plex blog, this is currently in beta which is why it’s only available to Plex Pass members at the moment.

It’s normal for Plex to make new releases only available to members for a period. It sounds like it will be a paid app once properly released, but wont require an ongoing montly fee, just the one off payment. It’ wont be a huge amount, the IOS app is $4.99, but I can see why people think Sony should offer access to your media for free.

I used the PS3 for all my streaming from my NAS, but to be honest it wasn’t a great experience. The PS3 didn’t support many formats, plus there was the whole Cinavia issue. So I installed Plex and used Roku to access the content. The difference is night and day and I’ve never used the PS3’s DLNA media server feature since. For me, the small cost of the Plex software is well worth it. I wouldn’t be surprised if they offer it free – or at least half price – to PS+ members soon after launch.

  • I have to say I think it’s ridiculous I should have to PAY for a 3rd party service to be able to watch my own videos on PS4. I REALLY wish they’d bring PS4, AT LEAST, up to the outdated PS3 standards with regards to USB video support. It was so simple and convenient on PS3. Copy to hard drive, organize in custom folders, really missing that in my living room since unfortunately having to sell my PS3 to get my PS4. I’m REALLY missing PS3’s plentiful media applications/options…and currently have no convenient way to watch videos on my main TV except for lugging my laptop downstairs and disconnecting/reconnecting HDMI ports every time which gets annoying fast. At least give PS+ subscribers a break on this required PLEX cost….

  • Great Stuff , great job guys !!! just bought a subscription , Amazing THX !!! works fine :)

  • @ snowcrash,

Simply a big HDD hooked to my router, which has media server functionalities (DLNA). Not everyone has the means to pay a couple of hundreds for a big NAS like ReadyNas or Synology. If you can affort it, that’s fine though. As you can run the Plex media server on it, but most people don’t have a NAS like that at home. Most usually use their router USB port, if they have one (most recent routers do, and provide media server capabilities).

And you’re right it’s ridiculous to pay monthly for this feature. But as I understand it, right now, it’s the BETA version that is available for those paying for the PLEX monthly subscription package. The app will be available later to everyone, for a fixed price. I don’t have a problem with this in itself.

The problem is that we still don’t have BASIC DLNA functionalities on the PS4, and more than a year later its release, the only way to stream our own content to it is through a paid app… Seriously, as a consumer, I find that kind of insulting from Sony. Especially since I’m sure PLEX is using some libraries already present in the PS4 to decode the A/V streams, and not using their own, without any hardware acceleration whatsoever…

  • It’s missing the best thing about Plex on all other devices; SEQUENTIAL PLAYBACK! Give it please.
