A Holiday Thank You

Hi Everyone,

Happy New Year! Since access to PlayStation Network was impacted during the holidays, we wanted to show our appreciation for your patience by offering all PlayStation Plus members that had an active membership or free trial on December 25th a membership extension of five days. The extension will be automatically applied, so no action is necessary to receive the extension. We will post additional information here on PlayStation.Blog when the extension becomes available. If your membership or trial ends before the extension is available, you will receive five days of Plus to enjoy once the extension becomes available (we will notify you when).

In addition, sometime this month we will announce that for a limited time, we will be offering a 10 percent discount code good for a one-time discount off a total cart purchase in the PlayStation Store as a thank you to all PSN members.

This discount can be used toward content available on PS Store including blockbuster new releases, award winning indie games, game add-ons and season passes, and an enormous selection of TV and Movies.

In case you missed it, click here to read about all the great games included in the January 2015 PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection lineup.

Thanks again to all our loyal PlayStation fans and welcome to our newest console owners. Wishing you all a very happy holiday.

  • @ deadmanjedi

    Mad at the truth, huh?

Giving credit where it’s due =/= kissing ass.

And, yes, I do get paid… in karma. Just like everyone else. The cool part is, you get to choose exactly how much you receive.

  • Oh and one more thing ADD ROTK 9,10 OR 11 to the ps2 classics instead of all the other garbage i saw suikoden 2 which is good but rotk4 just don’t cut it

  • So unless we have already given you extra money (ps+) or are going to give you more money (ps store) we get nothing? if we got new games for ps3 that we wanted to play online with friends but couldnt we dont matter?

“Hey, we’re sorry we got caught with our pants down again, give us some more money would ya?”

    Yeah, thanks Sony.

  • Drewcifer419 this is not like 2011. DDOS is not preventable

  • snarls200, if you listen to the interview with the guys from lizard squad, anon, and kim dotcom, they say not only is it preventable, its actually not that difficult if you have the money.

  • No!!!!! I just made a $59.98 purchase 2 days ago. I guess I’ll wait a little longer to pick up GTA V on the PS4 and get the discount on that at least.

  • and also, im more upset that only people who are giving sony more money are getting anything. i dont have ps+ and dont purchase from the ps store, so i got screwed out of my christmas fun with nothing to show for it.

  • I had a playstation plus free trial going and it didn’t get extended despite saying I would get an extra 5 days what BS

  • If you want to *really* thank PS customers, you would either

    A) release more Best of PSN collections

    B) release more games with *both* physical and digital versions, instead of shoving digital down our throats.

Consumer choice is always the best way to make consumers feel appreciated.

  • @KANE-FIRE #30 where is your avatar from, and where is she from?

  • Also, thank you Sony for the kind gesture.

  • Drewcifer419: DDOS is flooding the server with illegitimate requests. Explain to me how that can be prevented

  • @epic1si

Read the blog post again. They said they WILL give people five days, not that they HAVE given people five days.

  • i recieved my playstation4 on the 25th but was only able to get PS+ on the 26-27th….i recieved a two day trial but only had connection with psn on the 26-27th for around 2 hours but lost connection shortly after….. so i got a 2 hour trial instead of a 2 day trial… please look at my Error codes and you will understand my frustrations!

  • snarls200 I am not sure on the specifics as I am no techy, but I’m guessing there is a way to differentiate between the two requests. I am not the one saying it, supposed members of lizard squad and two different anon groups are saying it.

I think its more towards the end but the whole thing is interesting.

  • My original post was directed towards Sony:

Why aren’t average PSN users getting anything? Dead Nation was awesome in 2011.

  • Drewcifer419 The 10% discount is for everyone regardless if they have +

  • Holy cow this is going to be my last post on this because you obviously have no reading comprehension skills. In my first post i stated that i neither have ps+ NOR do i make psn purchases, so unless i give Sony MORE money, i am out of luck.

  • Great, PrimeroIncognito chiming in again and still denying to be part of the paid Sony propaganda machine… Everyone should try this Kool-Aid!

  • Thank you Sony, and all your hard work getting everything straighten out. Happy new year?

  • Wow five whole days free it still barely lets me online and when I do it kicks me off half the time I have the fastest internet available to buy I could care less about the five days free how about you get everything running 100% that would make me more happy it normally takes me 10-12 times attempting to log on before it finally lets me in

  • Grrr… I just purchased around $45 worth of Little Big Planet Add-ons. That 10% code would have been nice!

  • @237 Isn’t it a flooding of the severs? Since nothing can be done about it, there’s no point to the PS+ requirement for online multiplayer as they can’t improve the network.

  • Thank you. Nice to see that you are paying attention to your customers.

  • What if I don’t have the trial or ps plus?

  • This is why I love PSN more then XBL. They do stuff like this for their fans. I heart you Playstation! You have a dedicated fan for life.

  • lost 3 days ps+ get 5…more than fair.
    10% off one purchase…thank you.
i lost 3 days on a ps now rental.
how are you gonna make that right?
as it is now i will never use ps now when my current rental ends.
so EXCEPT for PS NOW people who lost rental time they paid for, fair enough.

  • This is really nice thanks Sony this is more than I expected to get :)

  • Happy New Year, What a excellent way to start off the new year 5 free extra days of PlayStation and a 10% discount on my next purchase. This is just enough for the inconvenience of the PSN being down. I have to say we have the best gameing and entertainment service in the world. Everyone unfortunately on this planet is vulnerable to ddos attacks hacking and identity theft. What happened to all of us on Christmas day was just mean and nasty. And completely wrong in every way. The persons or group or foreign power that did this is just fools because the PSN community is the strongest world wide family on the planet thank you everyone. You are all the best we will stand strong against anyone or any superpower to game on or enjoy are favorite movie music or video from uorour favorite gameplay. Thank you again from your customer ambassador to the PSN Gregory S. Napier PSN I’d: bombbreath Sony make.believe

  • Woooh yeahhh

  • 10% off cart is still pretty good I can finally see how that web store function works. and the 5 day extension is very acceptable for the amount of time lost.

  • I would say that an offer for 5 days added to my Playstation Plus account is more of an insult. Not only has Sony allowed our data, credit cards and personal information become comprised but they then struggled to handle the issue properly. A 5 day account extension is worthless to me.

  • It’s not just about the number of days lost vs the number given back. It ruined some people’s holidays and that’s good memories they’ll never have back. Pretty pathetic. About as pathetic as your cybersecurity department.

  • @graydogg51 And the people who spent their holiday working around the clock trying to bring PSN back up were having the time of their lives right? Lots of enjoyable memories for them I bet.

  • Thank you for this. My personal opinion is that it’s completely unnecessary to compensate us for something that was completely beyond your control, but the sentiment is greatly appreciated.

And with lots of good games scheduled for release in the first couple of months of the year, I’m sure that 10% off coupon will be put to great use.

  • The_Brook28: DDOS is not a hack, no personal info was grabbed

  • this is a really good gesture and all, but i wish they would have mentioned this sooner. As soon as the store went back up i bought like 8 games. Including 2 full priced ones.. Dammit..

  • I for one appreciate the extension and the 10% off offer. I just hope that The Banner Saga is out by then so I can take full advantage, but I could think of a few games I want that are unlikely to get any sort of discount anytime soon, so this is great news regardless. Say what you will about Sony as a larger company but the PlayStation Division keeps on surprising and impressing me. I’m not afraid to take Sony to task when criticism is due, but this is an admirable gesture under the circumstances and I applaud it.

So, are we ever going to get a PS Plus discount on Music Unlimited like we used to in the old days? And could we possibly get more 3D movie rental options? I’d really like to see the second Hobbit film in 3D as I saw the first in 3D in the theatre, but I’m not willing to pay $30+ CAD to own the second film based on that so-so. I’d rather just pay to watch it once in 3D, enjoy it for what it is and move on. In fact, there are several 3D films that I’d pay to watch just once…the option to rent more 3D movies and big movies in general is lacking on PSN. Too many films are available for purchase only. Please loosen things up a bit!

  • Is anyone still having a problem with the PSN network? I still can’t log on.

  • damn, this is a really good gesture and all, but i wish they would have mentioned this sooner. As soon as the store went back up i bought like 8 games. Including 2 full priced ones.. Dammit..

  • THAT’S IT?? SERIOUSLY?? I KNOW THAT SONY IS A “VICTIM” TOO, BUT WHERE WAS THE SECURITY TO PREVENT THESE KINDS OF ATTACKS?? I WANT TO RETURN MY BRAND-NEW PS4 AND GET AN XBOX1, AND YOU OFFER ME 10% OFF FUTURE GAMES?? I CAN’T EVEN REDEEM MY ‘FOUR GAMES 1 PICK’ OFFER NOW!!! I SMELL CLASS-ACTION!!

  • @sabjo182 People keep saying there is nothing that can be done to prevent DDOS attacks. MS got hit too. Needless to say that the whole premium subscription for online multiplayer to make the network better was a huge lie. Sony should consider dropping that policy.

  • Sony, it is your responsibility to ensure your servers can manage the traffic sent through them. The first outage was due to ddos initially, but the second outage later into the 3 day period was users trying to log back in crashing your servers! I don’t think you fully comprehend the impact this outage had on a lot of peoples Christmas period.

What you offer is a 5 day extension to a subscription that I will be continually paying anyway and a 10% discount?! So I need to buy another game – and an electronic game at that to benefit from your compensation?! Even at that assuming most games on the store cost ~£50 that’s a £5 discount and the PSN 5 day extension works out at 55p ((39.99/365)*5). This is a pathetic attempt to save face and a slap in the face of genuinely loyal Playstation users, my time is worth a lot more than £5.50! You essentially offer me nothing.

Just for those who do not remember a few years ago, Sony’s PSN network was down for ~week and they offered 2 FREE DOWNLOADS OF FULL GAMES through the PS store (I got Little Big Planet and Ratchet and Clank). A combined value of at least £40. That is compensation.

  • xBLACKZILLAx : Itds too expensive to maintain servers that are only nessecary for a few days a year.

if i remember correctly the 2 free games was from the 2011 hack that kept the PSN down for a month.

  • Sony, I understand this one comment will not change what has been offered; but you need to understand that by offering such a poor compensation package you are showing us how much you undervalue your customers.

I’m not going to comment any further than this but I leave you with this thought for anyone who is ‘satisfied’ with this compensation. If you begin to charge your customers for PSN access as you have with the PS4 (under the guise of improved network service) WE EXPECT BETTER NETWORK SERVICE!

  • I don’t have PS Plus (because Sony accepts only credit cards in my country and I have a Visa debit card) but that doesn’t mean that I don’t play stuff online, like the persistently online shooters like Destiny and I feel that I should be receive some sort of promotion too since I couldn’t play one bit just like others.

  • Garbage. This doesn’t fix ****.

  • anuran_dev911: so where d u live

  • @342 in 2011 it was down for a whole month, and in that attack their was actual compromised info. 2014 this past Christmas it was only 3 days, 4-5 for some they definitely handled this a lot better. This was only a DDoS attack, blaming Sony for not preventing a DDoS attack is like blaming sony for designing how the internet works with allowing such a big flaw like DDoSing. DDoSing does not breach security.

All sony or microsoft can do with these attacks is just wait it out until the attackers stop attacking and mitigate all the heavy false data elsewhere. Having more servers or better infastructure is not a fix simply because people like Lizard Squad can upgrade to using better botnets with much more volume and create bigger scaled DDoSed attacks that were even worse then this one. If they keep doing it expect them to get worse. There is nothing you can do to prevent it. Like i said before if Lizard Squad some how got a hold of your IP address and started DDoSing you is that your fault? NO its not all you can do is sit there and hope they stop.

  • What happens to those of use who couldn’t even set up a free PS-plus account because we couldn’t get on? I purchased the PS4 for Christmas and all day on the 25th and 26th we tried to get on but couldn’t. So adding 5 days for those that could get on what about those who couldn’t tell even get on to even get started?
