PS4 20th Anniversary Edition

Hello PlayStation.Blog readers! Today is a very special moment in our history. It’s been 20 years since the launch of the original PlayStation, which released in Japan on December 3rd, 1994. It seems like only yesterday! I’m so glad that we can celebrate this moment together.

20 years is a long time! In 1994, many outsiders thought that Sony was slightly crazy to launch the original PlayStation into an incredibly competitive gaming market. Who could blame them? Sony was (and is!) famous for engineering great electronics, audio equipment, and many other consumer devices. But game consoles?!

Sony Computer Entertainment, founded by my mentor Ken Kutaragi, was a project borne out of sincere passion and deep admiration for the craft of game development. The mid 90s were an exciting time for game developers, driven by the explosion of powerful but affordable 3D graphics rendering hardware and the birth of many young and adventurous development studios. The original PlayStation was meant to embody that sense of adventure and discovery, that sense that anything was possible.

We sincerely thank you for joining us on our exciting 20-year journey. You have made every bump and scrape we took along the way worthwhile. And there’s so much more to come! :D

But I don’t want to go on for too long, because we have a big piece of news to reveal: a very special 20th Anniversary Edition PS4!

How to pre-order in the US: PS4 20th Anniversary Edition will be available in very limited supply for pre-order starting Saturday, December 6th. Please watch the PlayStation Experience keynote starting Saturday morning at 10:00am Pacific Time to learn more.     Hard to believe I been there the whole 20 years with Sony. Now my children are gamers on PS3, hopefully Santa will bring a PS4. They’re fave game is Motorstorm Apocalypse by Sony. Lately my children are sad. They can’t play their fave game online anymore. We have contacted Sony support and they can’t help us or tell us why the servers don’t work. Could you please help us Mr Yoshida? I am not sure what to tell my children. :(

    I remember being 4 and playing my dads playstation and getting a ps1 for my birthday. Now im off to college this year (got accepted today =) ) and this is the coolest looking console ive ever seen mainly because its so reminicent of my childhood with my dad (who is now sadly deceased) i would love one of these but sadly my mom got me a normal ps4 for christmas already and we dont have extra money for a 3rd ps4 haha i would love to have one tho maybe if you release a less limited edition maybe? Anyways congrats to 20 years Playstation :) and looking forward to 20 more!

    I know I won’t be able to get this console, I already have a ps4 and I wouldn’t be able to afford a new console now BUT this is the best possible model of a ps4 we could be presented with for the birthday of playstation! Those who say this is not “awesome enough” to justify the hype are most likely too young to even understand what that little colourfull logo means to to us.
    Congratulations on 20 years and hope to see you, and be playing on your consoles, in 20 years from now.

    This playstation edition is truly gorgeous, it’s just a pitty I will probably not even see one live, yet, it has my love! <3

    I got my PS4 on launch weekend last year and have not played it much until recently. Unfortunately Infamous was a little disappointing but oh well. So far Shadow of Mordor, NBA2k15 are great on it. I will be trying to preorder this on Saturday. I remember when my dad got us a PS1 back in 1995 and i kept playing the twisted metal and demolition derby demo disc that came with it. Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil one were awesome on it. then pS2 came out and i bought a used one for my dad in 2002, that thing is still going strong. Happy Bday Sony PS!!! I must say that thing looks sweet!!! My gonna try and buy it then sell my current black one.

    So many memory’s came back into my head brought a tear to my eye (really), brought back all the happiness of Christmas 1995 it was the only present i got that year and still the best one to date, Thank you Sony for bringing this amazing console to our homes.

    @Shuhei Yoshida The first system I’d ever owned was a PS1. I can remember “Santa Claus” hiding the system behind the couch. It is one of those moments I’ll remember for the rest of my life.

    I’ve been having nostalgic memories of that day – so earlier this year I’d picked up a new hobby. I’ve now a collection of sealed PS1 games I used to own as a young boy. Suikoden II is by far my favorite find yet! Still looking for an original Crash Bandicoot (not the greatest hits version!) so feel free to send one my way!

    With that said, I now have a new dream to own one of these! It falls in line with my nostalgic hobby perfectly, and would look glorious next to my Suikoden 2 copy! I would buy 5 if I was allowed too! Alas, I suspect they will be limited to one per person.

    Thanks so much for the opportunity to relive my youth all over again. Truly a gorgeous piece of history.

    Does anyone know if accounts are transferable from one region to another? I lived in Europe, and now moved to Canada. I had to set up local account to be able to activate NA codes and play local version of games online. But I have a huge library of games on my EU account, including all those PS+ titles. But I don`t want to keep paying for PS+ subscription twice for both accounts. Is there any way to transfer my EU acc to NA?

    Att Sony VP and any one in between Having ps1, ps2 x3,ps3 x6 will 6!!! of them yes thanks to the getto. Ps4, psp part 1 and 2 and psp go and a vita. Must of this where just of the upgrade I do wish I should have waited to purchasing the ps4 in there is a way that I could take it back to get the new retro throwback 1 I so help me out Sony juts this one trust me I’m loyal to everything you guys makeso how about a trade????????

    Is There any news on the Dragon Quest Metal Slime PS4 being released in the US? Ive been a huge fan of the series since WAY back when I was a kid. My all-time favorite series of games has been (Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest). PLEASE bring the Metal Slime PS4 state side! We are RPG fans here also.

    Shu, I tweeted this already but I was born December 3rd 1987 and this year would be pretty special if I could put a deposit down on one of these elegent consoles. I cannot express how young I felt seeing the 4 color and the original grey. This was a excellent idea and by keeping them limited they will always be cherished!

    How I loved my scph-1001. This brings back memories. I’m hoping to get one on Saturday. Wish I could attend the show in Las Vegas. Have a blast to all those attending Playstation Experience this weekend! Any chance gamers outside Japan, can get custom HDD covers for PS4?

    Just sell the DualShock 4 from this package separately and I’ll be alright. I could even live without the etchings on the touchpad. All I need is the gray and that 4-color PlayStation button. That’s beautiful.

    How can we get this on the 6th? What do we have to do exactly?
    I would really love to buy this. I had the PS 1,2,3 and 4 until a month ago someone broke into my house and stole my 3 and 4. I had the 1 and 2 stored away to show my grandchildren so thank goodness I still have them. I really loved my PS3 too it was the original one that played PS2 games. I have been with Sony PlayStation from the beginning and it would be so great to replace my stolen 4 with such an iconic system.
    Love the idea!!! Looks great!

    Nice Concept, I like it… The console will bring some digital games or something?? I mean, like… the classic Crash Bandicoot, Parappa the Rapper, Ape Escape, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Spyro the Dragon, etc… it would be great to remember old time.

    ps: I know those game can be played now, I just said, if they came free or bundle with the console like a code or something.

    OMG!! I was so close to buying the PS4 Destiny Bundle, I actually had one in my Amazon cart saved for Friday!! I’m glad I didn’t go for it yet. I am definitely getting me the 20th Anniversary Edition, I hope to be one of the lucky owners! It really brought back memories, games like Battle Arena Toshinden, Destruction Derby, Ridge Racer, and my fav Twisted Metal!! Thanks for the wonderful Memories Playstation and thanks for keeping the memories alive with this nostalgic edition of an all time favorite. Happy Birthday PS. Looking forward to seeing myself with unit number 001981/12300 my birth year!

    P.S. Once it’s available for pre-order Dec 6th, will pre-orders be on the PlayStation website or somewhere else?

    I hope to get one!! I feel like I’ve grown up with this console, being born the same year as it. The Playstation one brought me closer with my brothers. Even though I was too spooked to play games when I was little (I was even scared of the boulder rolling behind you in the Crash Bandicoot games), I still enjoyed watching my brothers play their games. Seeing them enjoying the games at ages of 21 and 22 has encouraged me throughout the years to go into games. I be a part of helping kids connect through games the same way I did with my family and friends :) Thank you Playstation!

    Mr. Yoshida, I understand the PS4’s are in very limited supply, but PLEASE tell me you guys plan on selling more of those 20th anniversary Dualshock 4’s? And here I was thinking the Wave Blue Dualshock 4 looked the best……

    @214 : You can’t.
    But you can still use your games though (the EU ones) and even subscribe to PS Minus…ahem…I mean PS “Plus”. But in order to do that you need to KEEP BOTH accounts on your system. There’s NO WAY to transfer ANYTHING.

    Legends say that there was once a man, called Jack Tretton, that gave FREE ONLINE GAMING TO EVERYONE…and AWESOME “FREE” GAMES with a “subscription-based service” almost every month… but that was the time of Fairies and Demigods long lost since. Mankind has forgotten that…and now just celebrates the new King’s ever-expanding GREED and lack of respect for their subjects.

    So NO…no free stuff here. Just overpriced stuff. And shiny things, to confuse the ignorant masses. >:D

    The return of the old startup sound with the new theme brought out a tear now this. I’m kinda sad cause I won’t be able to get a hand on this. All the nostalgia I feel from the start up sound to the sight of this magnificent gem makes me think of Jet Motto, playing with my Dad and Twisted Metal with my Brother, and lets not forget about Spyro, Crash, and Metal Gear Solid. I think I forgot to mention Final Fantasy 7. Since then Sony has brought us The best consoles in gaming history one after another. It has been a great twenty years Sony. Here’s to twenty more.

    First off congrats on 20 years Sony! You guys have been an important milestone in my life, I remember staying up all night and playing Spyro on my grey ps1 all night with my dad….Good times :). Also wanted to thank you for the 20 year themes, I have all three (PS4, PS3, PSVita)…haha

    My only comment is PLEASE make the grey controller available to buy separate, We know Everyone won’t be able to get a Grey PS4 so why not give us a chance to “relive” some of our most precious moments, I guaranty I WILL buy at least 2 of them ($60.00 each x 2 = $120.00)….*hint* ;) But Please make the controllers available to us, Please give it some thought.

    I dont have a playstation 4 yet but I would live to get this limited edition as my first ps4. Love the color reminds me when I was playing chrono cross. Hopefully I can pre-order it or else I would be pretty disappointed.
