deadmanjedi on November 27th, 2014 at 3:02 pm said: “digital games should be cheaper because there is no expense to make and ship an actual disc.”
One could argue that the cost of physical discs should be cheaper due to the progressively depreciative nature of mass-produced goods. It probably costs pennies to press a few million discs nowadays. Transporting costs are generally a wash, considering that most distributors move multiple types and brands of products at once, thus, dispersing the costs across all affiliates equally, leading to minimal draw against the bottom line of each affiliate.
Digital marketplaces require server storage, constant maintenance, and, of course, electricity 24/7. The cost of digital distribution actually might be higher than physical at this stage of the game, although they are most likely near equal. They each have their own set of associated expenses. The theory that digital should be cheaper, is flawed. It’s ridiculously assumptive and willfully ignores pertinent details.
You’ve got to be kidding me. Nothing for the Vita? Look I have purchased over 50 Vita retail games (do not resale them) and many digital games. It almost seems like you guys are trying to do whatever you can to disappoint the Vita owners. We have to leave you feedback to let you know how we feel. The Vita is by far my favorite gaming device I have ever owned going all the way back to the Atari 2600. Most people just want it to feel like it is part of the Sony family instead of the red headed step child. Come on guys we want to give you money but you won’t listen!
Very disappointed. No ps plus deals, no vita deals, no discounted ps4. Think I’ll be switching to Microsoft since they’re offering a much better value.
Why would I pay 35 for Reaper of Souls when best buy has it for 29.99. The digital should be cheaper than the hard copy or at least price matched. I’ll pass, disk it is.
@mgarc1125 you missed the discount ps4. They went live last night on neweggs ebay page for 339. I’m sure they are sold out by now. Buy the bundle they have right now and just sell the games.
so your position is the retail discs cost pennies to make and ship.
but what about the retail stores have to pay rent pay employees, electricity so the cost of retail disc are more then pennies and cost more money then digital.
This sale is as expected for me. I’ve known about it for a week. It’s what pushed me to buy the EA games I wanted last week. Last year’s sales were very similar to this. I wanted nothing then and I want nothing now. I think Sony needs to figure out what a Black Friday sale even is.
I think I’ll do a little research and figure out how many people are annoyed by this sale / like this sale and post again :)
Hoping this is a joke by Sony because I’d rather buy the physical copy of discs at same price or cheaper than to pay these prices. I was expecting to see multiple things under $15 not see things $20-80. My limit for digital games has always been $15 or under since I’m on a fixed income and if its higher than that I just wait for a cheaper used copy. Not much variety in the sale either was hoping for at least one decent rpg for cheaper.
I was really hoping for a sale on Valiant Hearts: The Great War! I thought that it would maybe go on sale on the week of Veteran Day, but no. EU got it on sale twice already, we care about World War 1 too, especially in Canada!
Everyone buy Transistor, at this price it’s a real steal!
Oh, serious question here, Square Enix is having a Black Friday sale also with some of their games having PSN codes. Would it be possible to know if we’ll see a Square Enix sale on the PSN? I wouldn’t mind buying some of those deals :) Drakengard 3 for $16.00…mmm….
Shadow of Mordor
Transistor
Peabody and Sherman
Wolf of Wallstreet
My only complaint is with buying movies off PSN. Why do you make me stream them every time I want to watch them? You are killing my bandwidth allotment.
Pretty disappointed with this Black Friday sale. I’ve pretty much dedicated to buying only digital games now and it is a shame that instead of buying directly from the source I could get most ps3 and ps4 titles much cheaper (and probably used) on disc from any number of vendors. I build my campfire on Playstation because it’s cozy and top of the line. The entire psn store is always garbage on ps3, I can’t get my ps3’s trophies to sync no matter what solution’s I read and try, and the prices for digital games are usually absurd.
Get it together. People can always come out financially smoother just by building a home entertainment pc and using Steam’s super discounts and the “black markets” to get their games.
I expect more from high-end retail brands like Sony. Just where does all of our money go?
Reminds of Microsoft in the beginning of the Xbox 360 era.
I can’t believe this is actually, really, genuinely your “Black Friday” sale. This is absolutely pathetic, and I’m not one to whine on these blogs. Hell, this isn’t even a bad Black Friday sale, it’s one of the worst flash sales you guys have had. And no deals on Vita this year either… you guys want the thing to fail, I’m sure of it.
I’m so glad the PC I just got for Black Friday A WEEK AGO (you see, because retailers aren’t stupid and don’t actually wait for tomorrow anymore) arrived, I don’t have to rely on these exorbitant prices on games anymore. You know, most of us can emulate PSOne/PSP/PS2 games but the rest of us who purchase them do it out of good will because we love our Vitas or playing it on our actual Playstation devices, whatever they may be. I hope this is a red herring and you have something that isn’t laughable tomorrow, because as it stands you aren’t getting a cent from me and many others. And here I was, waiting patiently and having hope.
Dude, stop it. Digital is cheaper than retail, bottom line. The only costs incurred with digital games is in bandwidth, but bandwidth is only used when a sale happens. Otherwise, it’s no different than running a regular website, which Sony (or any other company) already pays for in the first place. If you’re still going to try sitting here and telling us that pressing discs, molding cases, printing instruction leaflets and artwork, loading it onto trucks, delivering it to stores, is cheaper or the same price you’re flat-out wrong. Not to mention digital eliminates the middleman, at least in the same of PSN or XBLA or GoD. These guys are double dipping, taking the retailer cut and the licensing fee.
Oh, and why do you have way more movies on sales than games? Do people even really use PSN as a service for renting movies more than your core audience of gamers buys digital? Something to think about, whoever is in charge of these sales.
I can’t believe i waited for this sale Best buy, Kmart, Sears, game stop,Mircosoft and AMAZON did better sales than This!!!!! Thanks Sony for not letting me spend my money on PSN. You will lose November and December to Microsoft for sure!
An absolute embarrassment that EU gets better deals and they don’t even have US Thanksgiving or Black Friday. Really, SCEA? I hope MS kicks your ass this holiday season to get y’all out of complacency.
Thats it, I am tired of you Sony, not spending a single dollar on you anymore, not going to resubscribe to Ps plus either, from now il buy only used games.
You will never learn how to respect your customers, I got tired of SUPPORTING you, why dont the kill the vita once for all?
Seriously What the hell are you thinking about?
I hope you guys got fired, scea was doing a much better work at 2013
all I wanted was to give sony my money for PSP/PSV games, but they’ve filled me with despair. I am really, really reconsidering my position also because you guys have totally backed off on your initial promises of what Vita could be.
Wow. Words cannot express the disappointment I feel with this sale. No playstation plus additional discounts, no discounts on playstation plus, and NOTHING for the Vita. I’ve been a loyal customer my whole life of your gaming consoles, but this is just awful. Microsoft is rightfully beating you in the deals department this Friday. Cheers to all the lost customers.
You don’t realize how loaded with assumptions your theory is. You didn’t comprehend what I said because you brought up “points” that I had already refuted. I explained why the shipping cost isn’t what you think. Neither is printing paper materials, nor pressing discs. You should look into how distributors actually do business, and the ever-decreasing costs of mass-produced goods. And again, shelf space. Physical retail stores are FORCED to move product. They have no choice. Failing to do so would lead to their demise. So, they take revenue cuts in the interest of long-term survival.
“Truck loaders” don’t get paid like professional athletes.
Digital marketplaces require much more financial investments than you’re aware of. “Bandwidth” is NOT the only cost. YOU are wrong, wrong, wrong. You’re clearly unaware of how much electricity is used every day to keep those networks running. It’s not even close to being “cheap”. You’re clearly unaware of the astronomical maintenance and repair costs. The UI designers. The research and marketing sectors. And, in many cases, the rent for the buildings that house the servers! Get real.
Im verry verry desapointesd sony i dislike that people are buying playstation vitas from your company and you ignore vita owners i understand that you may not think vita is going Anywhere but you have created a system that is compared to that off a low grade ps3 and ps4 you need to stop thinking vita is not going to go anywhere and get the big dogs from japan to step in to help .vitas sells have tripled since the ps4 release . and give developers free license to create vita games You need to support vita more why i say this is becuase i own one 2 i am buying a ps4 i hope that dosent get bad treatment in the next years are so i am a valued sony buyer and i am beggeg you to bring more games to the vitas table more ps3 and ps4 games for vita and to make vita better just high price good games and please lower that cod declassify game its a rediculus price for a vita game that was just horrible
This is it for sales. While Chieh did suggest that there are more sales to come, there isn’t a time frame given, so it could be between now and Christmas.
@Cheih,
Thanks for working Thanksgiving for the gamers.
@digital/physical debate,
Both sides are correct. Far to many people underestimate the costs of getting the goods made and shipped to you. Also, far too many people underestimate the cost of having a big circuit that can handle the downloads from the store, the cloud center behind the scenes, and the costs for people such as Chieh here who is working on a holiday so we can have this discussion.
I don’t believe that the costs of each is that different from each other, maybe 10%, so yes, something is cheaper, but it’s not pennies on the dollar some people seem to believe.
How much does GameStop pay their cashiers/sales associates? Probably at, or near minimum wage. Most video game stores are also very small and use minimal electricity. Rent is relatively inexpensive, too.
As long as a store stays open, it is generating profit. Thus, more stores open = ever-increasing profit margins (ESPECIALLY in GameStop’s case). Because of this, operating costs become less and less prohibitive, until they’re no longer even a small threat to the bottom line. A joke, even.
Now, how much pay does a server technician command? Double, triple, quadruple, even up to 5x as much as a cashier. Lump in perpetual electricity, UI design, and marketing costs, among other things. Nothing comes as “cheap” in the tech sector as it does in physical retail, at least concerning video game business, specifically.
You cling to the theory that “digital is cheaper” because you heard other people say it and mistakenly adopted it as your own. Well, those people didn’t know what they were talking about. ‘Cause they’re on the (blind) consumer end, not the professional end. And, the fact that people are more superficial and vain than ever before isn’t helping matters either. Ignorance abounds.
The lack of any Vita titles at all is a serious disappointment. I love that piece of hardware, but since Sony has publicly declared that the Vita is for Remote Play and indie titles, I’m thinking of adding a New DS to my collection as there seems to be more of an emphasis on titles from more established publishers, whether first or third party. This isn’t a knock on indie games as many of them are quite good, but I’m definitely starting to doubt we’ll see a AAA original IP on Vita… and it’s definitely not because the hardware can’t handle it.
i usually never complain about anything Sony related..but come on Sony..no flash sales on vita games?…..i don’t even know what to say..you guys don’t care about that handheld at all.
Quite a disappointing week for Vita. I still can’t play Rayman Origins Vita from tuesday store update. If you’re a sony staff, take a look at vita support forum and install rayman origins yourself and tell us if it works.
The hell, nothing for vita? Really? I was saving my money like crazy to prepare for black friday psn sales but down for nothing? This is f-ing garbage…!! Hope you get nothing for this year’s thanks giving…!!
Wow, the selfish gamers are not kidding. This sale is terrible, I can get most of these titles for those price in retail. They just simply priced matched everything and decided to call it a sale. Not only that, they don’t have additional PS+ discounts. Rendering the PS+ membership useless. I will pick up Diablo III: Reaper of Souls – Ultimate Evil Edition, but not on PSN.
@AizawaYuuichi I seconded that. This is a sale, Sony owns them nothing. Either appreciate the sales and move on. That’s what I’ll be doing. They can continue whining for all I care, but it’s not going to change anything.
Which means they’re about even. Which is the main point I was making.
As you mentioned, even if one side is more costly than another, the difference is marginal, and, therefore, a non-issue.
The mistakenly expected gap between the two paths is entirely rooted in selfish desire… with just a pinch of wishful thinking. People want more and more and more… yet, it’s never good enough. Most complaints are inherently invalid, erroneous since their conception, due to being founded upon the unchecked ego’s constant jumping to conclusions.
I’m more inclined to believe that yours is the flawed logic, PrimeroIncognito. Serverspace and electricity are incredibly cheap and are themselves more a shared resource than shipping will ever be. Additionally, a physical copy is more prone to retain value as it can be recycled back into the market at a later date. A digital copy essentially becomes worthless upon purchase. Entitlement may currently be the status quo of our society, but the general expectation that a digital item should cost less than a physical one is not faulty. Market value is measured by what consumers are willing to pay. True ignorance would be to give in to complacency and purchase a digital item at the near-equivalent price of a physical one.
I waited for this. I guess I’ll just buy the SS Delta that was part of the co-op sales. (held out because wasn’t finished on the original yet)
The Vita is struggling. The least you can do is support it. I’m aware that our attach rate is very high, so you could have at least awarded the community by trying to include Vita games in your Black Friday sales. But nothing.
I don’t usually complain, but this is just too much. I’m hoping there will be a cyber monday sale of sorts. Have a good day.
will there still be an xmas sale????????????????
Meh

So, you believe digital distribution functions by itself? Maintains itself? Repairs itself?
No employees necessary?
You might want to rethink your strategy here.

Picked up:

If you’re a sony staff, take a look at this thread and install rayman origins yourself and tell us. http://community.us.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-Vita-Support/I-ve-bought-Rayman-Origins-Vita-but-it-says-trial-version/td-p/44765245
No PS Vita games? I will sell my Vita. If I wanna play indies, I have a phone.

@ TwinDad
Which means they’re about even. Which is the main point I was making.
As you mentioned, even if one side is more costly than another, the difference is marginal, and, therefore, a non-issue.
The mistakenly expected gap between the two paths is entirely rooted in selfish desire… with just a pinch of wishful thinking. People want more and more and more… yet, it’s never good enough. Most complaints are inherently invalid, erroneous since their conception, due to being founded upon the unchecked ego’s constant jumping to conclusions.
Happy Thanksgiving.
