PS4 System Software 2.00 Preview: USB Music, Home Screen Colors

You may already know that PS4’s upcoming system software 2.00, codenamed Masamune, adds some big features including Share Play, YouTube support, and Themes – but the updates don’t end there. I have personally stated in past blog posts that we listen to our fans. PlayStation has heard gamers when they say they want more ways to find friends to play with, and more ways to personalize their PS4. With this update, we’ve added a Players You May Know tile, the ability to listen to your music while gaming, the option to change the look of your PS4 experience, and easier ways to sort and filter your library of content on PS4.

PS4 has been on sale for almost a year and we’re committed to improving the player experience in entirely new ways. As always, we welcome feedback as part of our ongoing effort to make PS4 the best place to play.

  • USB Music Player: PS4 owners can play their own music in the background while playing a game using USB Music Player*. After inserting a USB stick loaded with music into the PS4, a new option for USB Music Player will appear. Supported filename extensions include MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.
  • Change colors: In addition to the ability to add a theme, PS4 owners can also change the background of the home screen from light blue to one of seven new colors: gold, blue, red, green, purple, pink, and gray.
  • Players You May Know: PS4 will now suggest players you may know as potential friends in the ‘What’s New’ section.
  • Enhancements to Live Broadcasting: Masamune brings a variety of improvements to live broadcasting on PS4. In the Live From PlayStation app, PS4 owners can now select a Featured channel, which includes official broadcasts from PlayStation, broadcasts from people on a players friend list, and any game channel that the player has followed. Additionally, Live From PlayStation now has filters for searching broadcasts on a specific game, as well as support for archived broadcasts.
  • Content Area and Library: PS4’s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player’s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a – z or z – a), recently used, or install date.
  • Enhanced Voice Commands: The ability to control PS4 using voice has been improved. Players can now say ‘PlayStation’ to begin commands, and ‘All Commands,’ to see a list of all voice command options available. New voice commands were added for live broadcasting, including “Start broadcast,” “End broadcast,” and “Find face.”
  • Add To Library: The monthly free PlayStation Plus games will have an ‘Add to Library’ button in the PlayStation Store. This button will add a game to a PS4 owner’s library without downloading it – saving space on their hard drive.

Correction: Back Up Data, a feature listed in an earlier version of this post, is not part of PS4 system software 2.00.

PS Vita and PS TV – 3.35 update, Live From PlayStation

The PS Vita and PS TV systems will also receive a system software update to version 3.35 with the same timing as Masamune, adding four-player Remote Play support to PS TV. In addition, the Live from PlayStation app, which allows users to watch live gameplay streams from PS4 systems, will be available on both PS Vita and PS TV alongside this update.

PlayStation App 2.0 update

The PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets, available free on the App Store and Google Play, is also set to receive an update to version 2.0 within the same launch window as both the PS4 and PS Vita system software updates. This update provides a new layout for tablets, and the app’s home screen has been redesigned.

Stay tuned for more information on Masamune. We can’t wait for everyone to try it!

* User can play music files stored inside USB storage but cannot copy music files to PS4 HDD. This application cannot be used at the same time with Music Unlimited. USB Music Player will appear once USB storage is inserted, and will disappear once USB storage is removed.

  • Will you guys ever let us change our gaming ID because a new generation calls for a new name besides it is kind of like having abad tattoo.

  • yeah Arabic language along with too many other languages

  • Thank god I been waiting for this thanks Sony

  • Hi,

All this great thamks alot sony.

2 heaturs to keep in mind for a future update.

1). Like Library add a library/folder for games then all the games will be under that section. Finding things in between a lrge library gets problematic.

2). Notification when PSN is down, on app, vita and PS4(thus will be really handy as then it will not only save the player the trouble of finding out whether his or her internet is down or PSN is down also it will be way more convenient).

  • so so so……can I connect a external harddrive through the usb and play that music??

  • I’d love the ability to pin apps to my content area so they’re always in the same spot. For example, right now I’d like the first block to be shadow of mordor, the second to be netflix (netflix itself, not the video services tab), and the third to be destiny. Sometimes I randomly play resogun etc, and I’m not a fan of it jumping to the number one spot because I played it for 10 minutes one time.

  • Really Sony no CD support what the heck you had it for the PS3 and now you guys go backwards course you guys also went backwards on multiplayer this gen to but all Sony cares about is money.

  • Will the content management portion of the update include the ability to create folders for different sets of apps?

  • This sounds awesome! I wish it comes before the end of the year. I hope you guys let us pause downloads, though.

  • This sounds like it will be a great update, so really not complaining, but I really wish I could at least play CDs. I still listen to a lot of CDs, mainly for the sound quality.

  • I have OCD… the way the XMB is on PS4 is unacceptable.
they need to take all the good features of the PS3s XMB and integrate it into the PS4s XMB.
Folders is my main concern here… on my PS3 i have 50+ digigames that are all in their respected
Folders based on genre, with PS4 all my games are all over the place granted I only have 10 PS4
games but with all the other additional stuff (Share Factory, Unlimited, etc.) it gets quite cluttered.

Themes are a nice thing to hear about hopefully it allows us to change the console BGM as well, instead
of just turning it off, when its off the console just seems lifeless.

In addition, with the playstation app i would like to see an actual second controller option, being able to use my Droid
as a full DS4 controller would be pretty nice… we can already do so much with our droids connected to the ps4
but being able to use our droids as a controller would be amazing. But to do a DS4 on the droid properly it would have
to allow us to fully customize button layout…

  • I just came from an Xbox to the ps4 and once this comes out I don’t think I’m ever going back!

  • Oh i would also like to see a more backwords compatible console… maybe allow us to “at least” move our PS3 digigames over to the PS4… maybe try and rule out the PS3 all together… as it is now i find it sad that i still play my PS3 more then my PS4, mainly do to the fact that i have more unfinished games on my PS3 that i am still trying to beat… if i can move them over to my PS4 i wouldnt have to switch HDMI cords every time i want to play Tales of Xillia2. Maybe a system link via network connection is in order here… allowing us to stream our PS3 content straight to our PS4 this way we dont have to use our PS4s HDD space for the stuff we already have taking up our PS3 HDD space…

  • Loving all the new stuff to come to our consoles but I have one question for USB music are we allowed to play music from our phones with the USB plugged in our PS4

  • ^^you should be able too…

  • if they added DLNS support, with an app like BubbleUPnP on your Droid you should be able to wifi dongle all media… i use it on my PS3 and stream my Droids music and other media straight to the console… something else i am hoping for with the 2.0 update.

  • Thanks SONY really liked this update even though much user didn’t like it.But this is an really big step to future updates.
But this is what I really hope for the Playstation 2.0 update or upcoming updates.

1)Able to buy an Avater through PS4.

    2)PS Store improvement.

    3)Notification when friends are online.

4)Pinning of games and better organization. This is really frustrate as I find my homescreen really untidy as I can’t organized them in order and basically they just cramped up…

5)I hope maybe you can get Skype on PS4 but since Microsoft owns Skype,I doubt that will happen. As I want to be able to Skype with my friends on PS4 too when they are playing PC games or even XBOX cause Party Chat is restricted to PS User only.

*This is not an DEMAND as personally I have programmer and I know is not an DEMAND AND GIVE thing. Is Just an recommendation to you guys.Still good luck on this 2.0 update, really looking forward to it and hope there are my feature coming up xD*

  • When will i be able to change my user name it’s been 7 years, ya wind up regretting the name.

  • Yeah, I’ll be honest the lack of video playback support really angers me. Almost every device has it nowadays. Last generation, my PS3 dominated my television; it was my game console, it was my Blu-Ray player, it was my Netflix machine, and it was how I played movies via my USB thumb drive. That last one is incredibly important to me. I use that functionality more than any others apart from the actual gaming. Now I have to switch back and forth between my machines to use it.

You guys had to know this would anger your users. XB1 included it, why haven’t you? Is it to push Netflix/Amazon Prime? Hoping without USB support we’ll turn to the only options we have left? You’re including music playback now which is cool, but the fact that there’s no video playback, especially with all the huge demand for it, now seems very conspicuous and looks like an intentionally left out feature. So why are you doing this to us?

  • Can we please have blue tooth Mp3 playback as well for people with tons of music on their smart phones?

  • When will the update coming out this year or next year

  • a rough date would be good, something to look forward too !

  • id rather have DNLS/UPnP support over Bluetooth support cuz with that you can use apps like Bubble UPnP to stream all media to the PS4, i love it with my PS3 all my music on my Droid i stream thru my PS3 cuz my TV has kickass HD suround …altho my turtle beaches hooked up to my Droid sound really good too but when i want every1 else in the house to hear what im listening to i blast my TV hahaha

  • Please add media remote functionality soon! It’s really the only other feature I am looking for! Thanks!

  • Thank you for listening Sony. I haven’t been this excited in years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Please add HBOGO and Flixster and come out with a blue ray remote and then it would be the perfect system. That’s the only thing preventing me from buying a second ps4. The dualshocks die too fast! This is a huge over site.

  • Would love a date just so I can organize my dashboard as soon as possible.

  • We just want to change our PSN ID’s!!!!!!!

  • Sony really needs to update the mobile PlayStation App. It’s too slow with loading stuff, I can’t send messages or check trophies because of server connection issues, and the Live From PlayStation feature just links me to the Twitch / Ustream website instead of streaming video within the app.

PS4 has a great interface with everything built into the OS. Why can’t the PlayStation App offer the same experience on my phone?

  • I love all the new stuff. Has there been talk regarding media server functionality or external NAS support? I really liked this on PS3. I felt functionality went backwards without this.

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH
I REQUESTED THIS A LONG TIME AGO
    MY DREAMS FINALLY COME TRUE

  • Fix the PlayStation App for mobile devices. The Live From PlayStation section just takes me to Twitch and Ustream websites instead of streaming within the app. Plus I can’t check messages or trophies because of server issues.

  • Awesome! Now people can finally shut up about PS4 not being able to play mp3s.

  • “Sony, why can’t we change our PSN names?”

“User, why’d you choose a stupid name?”

You’re the one who chose your name. Blame yourself. End of discussion.

  • Still cannot play an audio CD on this thing, nor does it have any media features that a modern smart device ought to support. But COLORS, right? Because that’s what we all really wanted… Come on guys, seriously.

The “Add to Library” feature for PS+ offerings is a nice addition, though.

  • If you use the Dim feature on the controller it last much longer also if you dont use your headset in the controller it extends lifetime too… my controller lasts about the same as my PS3 one 6hrs or so… you can buy the big blue ray remote from playstation works for PS4 too its a bluetooth remote… not like the smaller one specifically for PS3 that ones USB…

  • you can create a new account if you wanna change your name… also i think they have a thing like xbix where you can pay to change your name

  • Live From PlayStation doesn’t work right on the PlayStation App. If I tap a video, it takes me to Twitch / Ustream website instead of playing the video within the app. And the same thing happens when tapping the PlayStation Store icon, it just takes me to another website.

Why can’t all this stuff be integrated into the app? PS4 has everything integrated into its OS.

  • in ShareFactory you can add your own mp3 from a USB device already… but its only to add it to the vid you are making, but still cool.
i make vids all the time mainly of Destiny, right now im working on showing off my deadscope skill… sniping with no scope and no reticule/crosshair… it aint easy to do at first… once we can upload to YT thatll prolly be 1 of my 1st uploads

  • When you add back in the DLNA/video playback/CD playback functions of your last console, I will buy the PS4-and not until then.

Let’s hope it is sometime this year. I do not want to buy the XBone but I will if it is the only console with last decades features.

    Get with it Sony…

  • I logged in for the first time just to echo what so many have said. Video support is a big issue that you guys need to take seriously- the fact that I can’t put video on a USB stick and plug it in is pretty unacceptable. I’m giving the benefit of the doubt that it’s in the works, but this needs to be a PRIORITY.

The fact that the xbox 1 is giving more freedom on this front, is surprising to say the least. I love my ps4 otherwise, but I just tried to do this today; having no idea that it wasn’t possible. Super, super disappointing.

    -unhappy fan

  • OMG!!! USB music player = Mp3 playback, the feature i was waiting for since i bought my ps4, now finally i can play my own music in any game. Sony you have finally redeemed yourself thank you very much.

  • Hey Sony let me introduce you a friend of my… [II] it’s the pause button, aparently you dont hear about it… Its used to PAUSE the downloads…

  • Fix the PlayStation mobile app, it’s too slow. Make Live From PlayStation and the PlayStation Store fully integrated with the app, instead of opening seperate websites when we tap them.

  • This is cool and all, but what I would really like is a “simple” mode that just turns off a bunch of features. Don’t want. I don’t want to post my activities, i don’t want to make friends, I don’t want to play videos or music, I just want my games.
    Thanks for listening.

  • @BrianCN

Playing games online with friends makes them more fun. And game systems have also been movie/media players since the PS2 came out, and PS1 played music CD’s

  • I can’t wait!!!

  • Love that they are finally bringing YouTube to the PS4. Themes are going to be a great addition as well. One can only wish that in a future update they’ll bring Google Earth, Flickr, and Skype. I know Skype is a long shot but Google Earth and Flickr are no brainer excellent additions for the system.

  • Sony what are you doing with the usb music? Is this the PS1? You guys are regressing. The PS3 was a perfect media system. You guys had to get greedy with your own music subscription service. This is not fair to your consumers. Very disappointed playstation fan.

  • Can you show a preview of how the new library system looks?
