PlayStation TV Arrives Today in North America

PlayStation TV makes its debut today in North America with hundreds of games available to play. Whether you’re using PS TV to play PS4 games in another room of your house through Remote Play, or playing PS Vita hits like Killzone: Mercenary on the big screen, the system has something for everyone. Starting at $99.99 (MSRP) for the standalone system, it’s one of the best deals in gaming. It’s easy to set up, yet offers amazingly deep gameplay. It sits in a special place in the PlayStation platform ecosystem – as it can play titles from PS Vita, PSone , PSP, PS3 (through PS Now), and PS4 (through Remote Play).

Of course PS TV plays entertainment content, including popular movies and TV shows that can be downloaded from PlayStation Store. PS TV will also launch with video streaming apps Crackle, Crunchyroll and Qello, and stay tuned for additional entertainment content we’ll be adding soon to the PS TV lineup.

In addition, PlayStation Now is available on PS TV in much of the mainland U.S. and Canada* and will launch with games for the whole family like Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus, Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault, Sly Cooper: HD Collection, and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.

You can also pick up the PS TV bundle we’re offering this holiday, which includes a PS TV unit, DualShock 3 controller, 8GB memory card, and a voucher for The Lego Movie Videogame – all for $139.99 (MSRP).

I hope you’ll get as much enjoyment out of this small, simply amazing platform as I have. Let us know below which PS TV games you’re looking forward to!

*Service not available in all areas. A steady broadband connection greater than 5Mbps is highly recommended. See us.playstation.com/playstationnow for details.

  • Bought this to remote play my ps4 in the bedroom…….very unsuccessful last night…..only even found my ps4 once out of 10 tries. Not sure this is going to work wirelessly for me….anybody else having same problems?

  • Very exited for PS Tv but then when I tried some of my DL games they failed, not compat. Is something being done for….

Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror (never worked on Vita)
Twisted Metal: Head On (never worked on Vita)
Silent Hill: (not tested yet, but not on compat list)
Silent Hill: Origins (not tested yet, but not on compat list)
Destiny of Spirits (does not work)
Final Fantasy 3: (not tested yet, but not on compat list)
Mortal Kombat: Unchained: (not tested yet, but not on compat list)
Midway Arcade Collection: (never worked on Vita)

I will test more and update you with my findings, was looking forward to finally playing some of these older games but no dice.
I know NF, Hulu, YouTube will get fixed so not biggy. Also I noticed there is no option for full screen on PS one games or smoothing. You guys should also implement smoothing on PSP games would make a huge difference on a big screen.

  • I have a decision to make. Hopefully I will get a reply. I am going to buy either the VITA or the PSTV this week. My question is, I have a PS4. Will the PlayStation Now content be the same across all devices?

I’d much rather buy a VITA and have a little handheld, but if NOW content is going to be more varied on the TV I may as well grab that. Thanks!

  • I have bought a PSTV because I am trying to support the Vita system in any way I can. I am very happy to be able to play Toukiden on my TV. However, I feel that the compatibility situation puts early adopters into a very bad spot. Launching the system with this little support sends the message that Sony is not confident in the product and will not be willing to invest in it until it sells well. How are we supposed to convince people to invest in the product when Sony themselves seem unwilling to commit to the device?
It is amazing to me that Sony has released a streaming device that does not offer any of the most popular video streaming services on it. Add to that the situation where the compatibility list for Vita games is full of so many striking omissions and the open question whether future releases will be supported, and this looks like a pretty poor proposition on the face of it.
I am invested in the Playstation ecosystem and have supported the Vita since launch so I want these systems to do well. But I don’t know how the market is supposed to interpret such a half-hearted launch as anything other than a statement that Sony does not support the product and is hedging their bets for when it fails.

  • +1 for multiple accounts on one PS TV, I have 3 accounts on my PS3 for my brothers and they are now asking me why they can’t use their own account on my newly bought PS TV… it’s kind of a basic function that should be included at launch.

also regarding incompatible games that are confirmed to work on Japanese Vita TV (SoA, Ys, Neptunia games), is it possible to just let us bypass the compability check? because it seems like it’s just the firmware doesn’t have those games in the whitelist and those games may very well run just fine. Maybe add an “advanced” option in the next firmware update to disable the check, then provide a warning that not all game may work and let us be the testers.

  • Sorry to post twice, this is an issue that should probably be patched right away:

It is possible to search for non-compatible games in the PSTV store and find them. If people start buying these games and are unable to play them it is going to cause a lot of complaints. Content not available for play on the system should not be visible in the system store front.

  • Does the remote play work over the internet like the current vita does today? I want to buy one of these to bring to work with me to play ps4 remote play during lunch

  • PS TV is not compatible with sony pulse elite….very disappointed. I got it yesterday and used it to play with my pc monitor(no speaker) and found out my sony pulse elite could not work with PS TV /_\

  • I picked up ps tv yesterday. But the capcom arcade remix and reload is listed as compatible games, but i can’t find them in the store. Please add them. Thanks.

And metal gear solid from ps one was removed from ghe list. Please help to make them compatible very as that was my primary reason to buy it.

And hope go bring all psp djmax games in the store.

    Thanks.

  • Oh another thing. In the the message app, the keyboard use R2 to enter new line, but no quick button for send. Have to navigate to hide the keyboard then hit send, very slow and inconvenient. Please change the keyboard layout.

And the number and symbol layout is obviously for touch, doesn’t work for tv at all. Please change.

    Thanks.

  • Can i play already purchased games from the PSN store?

And can my Sony Bravia kdl-46ex720 act as the device?
read some Sony TV’s have this integrated…

    TY…

  • Add me to the list of purchasers who want the ability to use multiple IDs on PSTV. I mainly bought this for my sons who are always trying to be the first to get to play in the theater/game room on the projector. I thought this would solve a problem by allowing one to use this device to remote play the PS4 on one tv while another was using PS3 in the theater. Wrong.

Why on earth do you not allow the ability to switch users on the PS4 during remote play? Surely, Sony knew this was going to be a more “family friendly” device than the Vita, with is aimed toward the “personal” experience. The ability to not switch is a huge oversight.

I love Sony Playstation products, but, please, you got to fix this.

  • Hi I was wondering if the Sly Cooper collection will be compatible with the PS TV? I noticed Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time was available and I actually own the sly collection and see that there is only one control in the manual that would use the Vita’s touchscreen (no controls use the camera). The games in the collection were from PS2 so they didn’t natively use touch controls. I pretty much bought a PS Tv to be able to play the sly collection and it’s a bummer that a game that should be compatible isn’t. I would love some news on this

  • Please let the DS3 ‘select’ button to have a ‘game’ vs ‘system’ override toggle when using to remote play the PS4.

One of the reasons I bought the PSTV was to remote play Destiny, and sadly not being able to summon the Ghost with a DS3 makes the game unplayable (as it by default opens the PS4 share stuff rather than bringing up your ghost, which is way less useful for gameplay :-) )

  • Between the lack of compatible games (including SO many games that have no touch screen gimmicks), lack of Netflix/Hulu, and continued requirement of that ridiculous proprietary memory card, PS TV is a disaster. Can’t believe I bought one but I’m a remote play sucker.

    Sony hates us, everyone.

  • Don’t worry guys. If you wanna play Sly Cooper collection, you can! You just need to pay ridiculous rental prices to PS Now. Don’t expect the game you bought to work however.

  • Hey! Got the PS TV today, and it was a total BUMMER that Dragon’s Crown doesn’t support local couch co-op. Are there any plans to extend this feature out for Playstation TV? I purchased the table top version of the vita so I could (hopefully) share the experience with friends.

  • I really hope you can get Netflix to update to work on PS TV and for PS Vita to be able to control it (like I can do with my Nexus 10 Netflix and PS3 Netflix, for instance.)

My other hope is that Vudu HD will come to PS TV. PS Vita doesn’t really need it, though if they did make one it’d be SD only. PS TV for any streaming content should be able to do HD content on PS TV, especially when Ethernet is connected.

  • No Youtube, Netflix, or Amazon on Day 1. You need to let us know when to expect these apps or this thing is getting returned.
I thought this would be a modern TV Platform. Right now it doesn’t stack up well against my three year old Roku.
    Playstation Now wouldn’t even install!!

  • Oh and VUDU is key too. It’s missing so much!!!!

  • Hi, can anyone help me understand this device limit please? I’ve read a lot and still don’t understand it, because I’ve read a lot of different things. I’ve the following PSN devices:
    – PSP
    – 2xPS3
    – PS4
    – PS Vita
    – PS Vita TV (got scammed at a store and bought the asian version… they don’t accept returns)

My problem is that I can’t login on my Vita TV. Would deactivating my PSP solve this issue? Thanks in advance.

  • Any idea to when will be available in Mexico?

  • Ok, I just tried remote play with the PS4 on a wired connection on both ends. It was so laggy it was unusable.
Definitely returning this thing. It doesn’t do anything it is advertised to do well enough to justify keeping it.

  • PS4 Remote Play is terrible. I can only use the wifi method, as I would assume most users would need to. Both devices have 90%+ signal strength, and NBA2K15 is unplayable due to how choppy it is and the lag. I get constantly disconnected. I have the direct connect unchecked, and my wifi is strong. Am I missing something? Remote play is the only reason I bought this thing. Does Sony recognize this is becoming a common thread? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Very disappointed with PSTV…

  • I’ve deactivated my PSP and this didn’t solve the problem. My asian PS Vita TV still doesn’t accept my US account login credentials. The error message is “this service is not available in your country/region”. It would be great to have an official word on this. No other PS device has ever had region lock (not even the VITA – only the account), it would be a shame if it’s the first.

  • Man, that tease with Freedom Wars! D;
    Please come sooner! <3

  • I’m having lots of problems with PS tv using remote play. I have an AirPort Extreme router and have not had any issues with using my Vita with remote play on my home network and away from it. I was able to start Destiny last night which lagged horribly and from that point on I couldn’t connect any longer. I keep getting a message saying the signal is too low.

Can you please provide me with a PS tv faq on troubleshooting? All I could find was Vita related.

    Thanks!!

  • Will there be a White version to match my ps4? (:

  • @sectoid_br: Have you made sure to update to the latest firmware version? North American accounts were not available until the most recent update.

  • calc84maniac thanks for the help, it’s a good shot. However I can’t get to it since I don’t have an asian account… I’m stuck at the initial configuration =/

  • Duh I managed to set it up in english now, feeling really dumb. I’ll see if I can update it.

  • Yes, everyone with any PS TV or Vita TV must update it to the most recent update available 3.30 … it can be done without actually inputting any real PSN ID. Just “set up” without making a PSN ID or using an actual one.

All you need is to input a birthday for a temp account to get to the home screen so you can go to Settings and System Update.

I bought the bundle and used the 8gb memory card only after I had updated to 3.30 first. BTW and input my US PSN ID after that.

  • Yeah it works now, thanks calc84maniac and crazy-maisy for the help! :)

  • Any chance of getting the Dracula X Chronicles to work? I’ve seen that it works on the Vita TV in Japan, and was one of the primary reasons I bought my PS TV.

  • So i got mine in the mail and I’m considering taking it back my prime need was a divice for netflix everything else was a bonus i needed it to do netflix…

  • Kind of echoing that others have said… I have five physical carts (and a few downloaded programs).

Out of the five, three don’t even work:

    Hyperdimension Neptunia PP
    Hyperdimension Neptunia re;birth
    Lumines Electronic Symphony

Also, I haven’t seen a definitive answer on the controller… if I go and buy a DS4 controller, does the touchpad essentially do what the Vita back touchpad does?

I’ve started a download of Sword Art Online to see if it works or not…

  • So the Playstation TV only plays like 1 game that I own. And it’s God Eater 2 from Japan. Can we get some actual compatibility for games that are from North America:

    Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment
    Soul Sacrifice (The original one)
    Playstation All Stars Battle Royale
    Motor Storm RC

or could we just have all games playable on the PS TV but sell “recommended games” on the PS TV store?

This would make things so much easier for everyone who bought a PS TV day 1 and can’t get a refund.

  • So, after having my PS TV for 2 days now, I’m already pretty disappointed…

The best Vita games don’t even work (Gravity Rush, Uncharted, Mortal Kombat, Rayman Legends, Sound Shapes, Modnation Racer… just to name a few)

It refuses to launch the most basic of Vita streaming apps. (Netflix, Hulu, etc)

You can’t stream music/movies from your PC

You can’t connect to your PS3 AT ALL…

You can’t get rid of the incredibly stupid and unwanted “Featured” tab.

Really sad that I got so excited about a product that was touted as being a competitor for other set-top boxes (Roku, Chromecast) And it won’t even do anything but Crackle in that department. Then I find that all the games I was looking forward to playing on a big screen… (The Playstation Display I have…) They don’t even work…

I’ve never been this disappointed by a company/product before… I feel like I got a bait and switch.

  • I can imagine more titles are still going to be added to the list. There are a few games that were already compatible in Japan that aren’t currently on the list like Sword Art Online.

I hope you guys keep it up and respond to some of these Gawker sites though (Gizmodo specifically). They are already declaring the PlaystationTV a “bust” and I’m seeing quite a few people prematurely dragging you through the mud even though you only just released the PSTV yesterday. I know this is the internet and people are very negative on here to begin with, but holy crap does Gizmodo sound like it’s trying to kill the PlaystationTV before it’s even had a chance.

I really hope you guys are finally ready to improve the image of the Vita. It really deserves more love than it gets and you guys hardly ever talk about it.

  • Yesterday when I got my PS TV I downloaded and actually played 1001 Spikes it played a little sluggish but did in fact play I just tried 5 mins ago now saying

This application cannot be used with this system.

    WTF?!?!?

  • I am highly disappointed that i cannot play PSX games in full screen mode like i can on my normal VITA on my PSTV do not understand why this feature is not available.

  • Finally got my pstv today…had to work all day and had an opportunity to unbox it this evening. I got to the main screen where it tells me to connect my ps controller with a usb cord and press the playstation button. I connected my ds4, that i use everyday with and for my ps4 everyday and i got a message saying something along the lines of “cannot power device anymore. disconnect usb device.” I got the standalone product because i figured i’d be able to use my DS4 with no problems. I tried using a different USB cord, thinking the cord may the issue & I received the same message. So to make a long story long..it won’t let me sync my DS4 to the pstv so I can even start the system up to see whether I hate it, love it..or just meh. lol. Any suggestions?

  • I really want to buy this, but like others before me, I’m unable to play half my games and on a home system that only supports one PSN account at a time.

Please expand title support to Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus, Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment, and the Hyperdimension titles. For now, the lack of multiple account functionality makes this a redundant and unnecessary purchase for me, since I already own a Vita. :/

  • I feel like i was sold an unfinished product. i d/l and install Netflix to find it doesn’t work. And now i find out some of my games do not work. It took an hour to download that Lego Video game that came with it and i have a 60 mb connection. maybe it will get better?

  • So after a few days with PS tv I feel like its def not a finished product so many games do not work on it that should, like all PSP games.

    Twisted Metal: Head on
    Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror
    Silent Hill: Origins
    Mortal Kombat: Unchained
    Final Fantasy 3

    and the list goes on……

I can understand Vita games that require touch features not working but PSP games, come on Sony you are blowing it.
This thing plays less games than the Vita, makes no sense and they are basically the same hardware. On a side note it is missing a lot a key features and app support.

Like why can we not make PSone games full screen, or smooth PSone and PSP games to make them look a bit better. Get rid of this featured tab, its annoying and not needed. Why do some games have to be downloaded from PS3 and then transferred over to VIta then swap the memory to the PS tv, they should dl directly from PSN on all devices, what is the logic that some work work and others don’t?

PLEASE IF ANYONE AT SONY IS READING THESE COMMENTS, GET ON THIS ASAP!

  • Hey Don,

Thanks for responding to my super long messages, it makes me feel great knowing that you guys do hear us. I understand there’s not always a simple solution, and the technicalities take time to resolve, but it helps knowing that you are aware of the concern, and that SONY PlayStation will see about a feasible and balanced way to satisfy our consumer wants and the business practices of the company. That shows a lot of intergrity.

The only other thing I wanted to suggest, and it’s a crazy idea if even possible!, but for the PSTV, do you think it would ever be capable of running 2 instances of a PSP game simultaneously? Why do this, you ask?

For me it’s simple. Now any PSP game that has adh-hoc/online multiplayer, would become a splitscreen game. Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron, Monster Hunter 3 Freedom Unite, Crash Tag Team Racing….It enables such possibilities for multiplayer madness.

  • I’ve always loved splitscreen, and my mind runs to, is this even possible. Could the PS4 do this, oh yeah! It could run 2 PSPs, but I have no clue if the VITA/PS TV specs could technically handle it. Just a thought for future firmware updates though. I thought about this a while ago, and while it makes no sense on the VITA itself, it makes perfect sense for the PSTV.

Thanks for very much for your continued support to this thread and it’s inhabitants.

  • Don Mesa:”Your account supports up to 3 devices. Might want to check your account to see if there’s an old device like a PSP still checked in.”

First point: He’s not asking about activating another machine on his account, he’s asking about multiple accounts activated on one system. So, you know, you could have multiple people in the same household with separate PSN accounts on the same machine at the same time, so you don’t have to factory reset the machine every time someone wants to play their games on the machine that isn’t going anywhere.

Second point: Even now, every game listed on the PSN says I’m licensed for install on up to two portable devices. Which is correct, the two listed in every game on the store or the three you claim in your post?

These are two of the many issues I have with the Vita right now. It’s a bad deal for anyone whose entire PSP library is digital, and no one at Sony seems to know what the actual limitations on the machine are. I don’t want to see it fail — I really really want one, but it doesn’t make sense for me to get one yet — but you’ve done your best to make it do so.

  • Ive got mine, its ok kindof simple not much too it im sure there is more to come, would have been nice to have netflix and hulu on it already. My question is will there ever be a way to play on two tvs simaltaneously with 2 people like a splitscreen?

  • @198 febwtf

When they changed the max accounts to 2 portable devices and 2 home consoles back in November of 2011 from 5 activated devices for each, any game purchased after that point, Nov 16th or 17th, around that date, the 2 activated devices was the established limit. However, you could still maintain up to 5 activated devices for any content prior to that date.

When the VITATV launched in Japan, they realized there was a slight issue with the “portable” device limit, cause they didn’t want people not having their 2 activated devices, PSP/VITA in place of the VITA TV. So…They modified the PSN account license limit to 3 devices in the PSP/VITA/VITA TV family. The same applies for the PS TV. You can have 3 authorized accounts for PSN content in any combination within that family. That help?
