Tearaway Unfolded Coming to PS4

We’ve got a very special message for you all: we are bringing the magical papery world of Tearaway to PlayStation 4!

Tearaway Unfolded Coming to PS4

Now, if you know anything about Tearaway, your first thoughts on hearing that might be: “but that’s just plain impossible, yo!” and you’d be right! A straight port would be impossible, but we were super keen for Tearaway to make the jump to PS4 and we’re not the kind of folks to let something like the impossible get in our way!

Tearaway at Gamescom 2014

So we started jamming and experimenting, and the result is Tearaway Unfolded – an expanded retelling of the original game, adapted for PS4, and rebuilt from the ground up to use all the unique features of the Dualshock 4, and with a bigger prettier world running at 1080p and targeting 60fps to boot.

The original Tearaway was a little papery world held entirely in your hands, and we used all the features of the PS Vita to deliver an experience that was as life-like and also fourth-wall-breaking as possible. With Tearaway Unfolded, we want to do the same thing, only this time the world is inside your TV and you interact with it using the unique inputs of the controller…

It doesn’t make sense for players to get up from the sofa, wander over to the TV and literally touch the world like they did in the PlayStation Vita version, but there are other ways you’ll be able to physically interact with the game instead.

From the comfort of your couch, you can swipe the touch pad to unleash great gusts of wind, and send them howling into the world to unfold rippling bridges or send enemies tumbling from cliffs! The power of wind can also be used to propel atoi through the skies in a paper plane, so you can explore the larger new world from above.

We also use the controller in more surprising ways too! You can shine the controller’s light bar into the TV to light up dark and gloomy places, growing and transforming the scenery, and guiding atoi along her way. Your little messenger companion can also throw items and creatures out of your TV and into your controller, where you can listen to them rattling around, before sending them hurtling back into the world.

Tearaway Unfolded will be a familiar story, but with new ways to play, new places to explore, and a world that looks really rather stunning on PS4! Check it out in our trailer, and please let us know what you think in the comments below!

  • Removes a Vita exclusive….doesn’t announce even one new one.

    :smh:

  • This is far and away one of the best titles I’ve purchased for my Vita and looks like it will be just as charming on PS4. Please say you’re going to give vita owners a price break on this version since most of us already own the game. It would be a kind gesture as many have already stated the sad state of PS Vita. I still love mine, but I’m definitely disappointed that we won’t be getting more games like Tearaway for it. Anyway, it feels like adding insult to injury to punish Vita owners by making them pay full price for a beloved game twice. Thanks!

  • Sony is discording in PS Family….

Microsoft and Nintendo are winning the industry.

  • Should be interesting, if only to see what makes this particular letters journey different from all the others.

Should be mostly the same if you haven’t played the game at least.

  • This is great news for Media Molecule. Congratulations, guys.

Everybody else, stop being so selfish. That’s coming from a fellow Vita owner.

  • Well Sony at least put Gravity Rush 2 on the PS4, i need to play the sequel, R.I.P Vita.

  • Ugh, why did I buy a vita last month again??

  • Already sick of the whining.

The original remains and will forever remain a unique experience you will never experience ANYWHERE else other than the PS Vita.

The problem is? Oh right, people who’ve clearly never played Tearaway, but love to whine about Vita [which they probably don’t have].

  • I just bought the original version about an hour ago. I am so disappointed…

  • Does this mean we’ll get some sort of PS TV compatibility when used with a Dualshock 4?

  • GORGEOUS.. but this is 1 less reason for me to need to get a VITA. Oh well, I guess SONY doesn’t want me to get one after all, lol :/

Really, SONY’s decision making team continues to make HUGE money making mistakes. They killed socom by making or allowing TERRIBLE choices/CHANGES to the game instead of staying true to what the original ps2 GREAT socom games were, and they’re killing the VITA by not supporting the beautiful machine with beautiful games… KISS = Keep it SIMPLE, Silly ;) Make MORE beautiful games for the VITA if you want that beautiful screen to SHINE and that sexy lil system to SELL.

Games will take TIME to come out though, SO, at the VERY least, SONY, it would be THE smartest thing you could ever do this year if you BUNDLED the VITA with the PS4 with a $50 discount this holiday season. Not doing so shows just how clueless SONY is, especially considering how they keep saying the vita is the ps4’s sidekick for remote play / cross play / cross buy / cross save etc. Why not allow customers a GREAT way to get BOTH? Hey, you could even MARKET how great that bundle is, and how great these 2 systems work together.. ;)

  • Lol at people here, this is definitely an entirely different game built for PS4.

I do hope they make another Vita game(even if it’s a different from this one)

Also is there a level editor on this? Would really love to create tons of paper levels!!!

Plus it’s in full 3D! Damn wish Little Big Planet 3 was like this.

I was also hoping SCEA would at least localize more JPN Vita games if they don’t plan on doing something on the machine.

Legend of Heroes Crossbell Arc Games? Phantasy Star Nova? God Eater 2? Even if you don’t own this franchises, you could always make a deal to their respective owners and bring them ashore.

Come on Sony, PS4 is successful as it gets, so concentrate on Vita as well!!!

I’ll wait for a revision and a price cut, then again i’ll probably buy one once MGSV PP and UC4 comes out!

  • You should have just burned a Vita on stage instead.

  • TGS is my last hope for the Vita.

  • Man cry baby house – Sounds like good news imo. Vita still gets great love and I don’t need exclusives to notice that.

  • Does this title support remote play? That would be cool!

  • Release Date?

  • I haven’t played the Vita version yet, but I plan on getting it by the end of the year. Heard nothing but great things about it!

MM is one of my favorite games developers. I’m not sure if you guys are allowed to answer this, but are you guys also working on another PS4 game? I recall that demonstration you guys gave back during the PS4 reveal, so I’m assuming you’ve got another game in the works that has something to do with that particular demo. :D

  • Hell Yeah! No need for a Vita since I don’t travel so dropping this on the PS4 is an instant buy for me; this game looks fantastic!

  • I’ll take this as a spit in my face for buying a vita and this game on it, I’m betting Gravity Rush 2 is getting the same treatment…. could you at least announce a release date for Oreshika and Freedom Wars, so I can play them before I sell my Vita, since you don’t really care about it.

  • I have a PS4 and PS Vita. Seeing no major announcements for the Vita and Tearaway for PS4 makes me irritated with Sony. That feels like a slap in the face. Nothing but Indies and JRPGs in the future. I want games like GTA, Infamous, God of War and open world games for Vita. I want NBA, WWE, NHL games. And don’t say that I can use PS4 Remote to play Vita. I want stand alone PS Vita games. For the record, I have owned PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP and Vita. I feel that Sony is not doing enough for Vita.

  • Nice to see this come to PS4 it looks like an interesting game.

  • Tearaway on the Vita was and is still excellent. Great to see that others will enjoy it. The outrage to me is that A) They will never address the ludicrousness of the PS Vita memory card….they pretend it’s not a problem. If you search on the internet, nowhere does Sony acknowledge that the PS V memory card prices are crippling the system.

Also, no mentions about it on E3 except to mention that Sony has withdrawn first hand support….even if they try to spin it as an indie console now.

B). If they were just able to port and sell PS2 games o the Vita with trophy support as opposed to people downloading emulators, a lot of people would also buy the console….it’s not selling now, so what is there to lose if it can easily be done.

C). Lack of advertising OF ANY KIND. PS4 commercials are overabundant, yet I have never seen a PS Vita commercial. Fire your crappy advertising people, or train them better.

Last thing, AT LEAST ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE MEMORY CARD PRICES ARE RIDICULOUS. You want people to spend 100 dollars on a good memory card? Stop making everything digital or at least lower the price on those memory cards. They aren’t going to sell if this keeps up. someone over at sony needs to take econ 101.

  • If only Persona 4 Golden were to appear on PS4, we could declare the Vita both officially dead and useless. Too bad Sony is treating the awesome Vita as just an expensive response to the Wii Gamepad.

  • Tearaway was perfect on the Vita, because it was short and could be played in short bursts. So people waiting for a class, or commuting on public transit, could pass the time. Genius design, really. So I trust MM to change all that when they adapt to the PS4 because now they don’t have to worry about hands cramping from playing too long on the Vita (like mine did when playing P4G for hours and hours because it’s still the best game on Vita).

I’m double-dipping and not quibbling about price because I trust the cock-eyed, inventive brilliance of MM.

  • @74, cronqvist, ooh, that would be awesome, P4G on PS4, with upgraded graphics and utilizing the DS4!!! I have pre-ordered the Playstation TV just to continue my platinum hunt on P4G on a bigger screen.

Honestly, folks, why begrudge other console owners the chance of playing great games? A wider install base means more money for devs, who will then use that money to make more great games. Very basic logic you should support.

  • @Elvick_ Agreed. I can’t wait until Sony cut these people’s throats off with even more of these games. They totally deserve it for trying to dis them.

  • Wow. When not even Sony itself cares to leave one of the few AAA exclusive Vita games as an exclusive Vita game, you know that the system will be home of indies, ports and B Japanese games only.

  • What the hell is the matter with you people with all the Vita doom and gloom. I suggest you check the store out to see what is releasing for the Vita right NOW instead of whining. This week’s drop is almost all Vita!

  • It sucks. Tearaway was one of the only reasons I bought the Vita back in december last year, and now there is a port for PS4.
    So the rage is because
    1. Another Vita exclusive is dead.
    2. The PS4 keeps getting rehashes from other consoles, even though there are around 10 AAA titles coming but keep getting delayed.

But maybe my rage will pass. Just like when Kojima decided MGS was no longer a exclusive and my grandma could play it on her microwave and whatnot.

And like a previous poster said yeah so I guess Persona 4 Extended Unlimited Ultra Edition is the only thing remaining for a PS4 release soon.

  • @ps_psychedelic Well find a new reason then! I have a Vita too, and I didn’t buy it because of a stupid Vita exclusive game like you pansies. I bought it merely for playing my favorite PS3 games on the go. If you bought it just for this one game, you’re an idiot (Not aiming that at you, I meant the people who did that). So grow an effing spine and play with your microwave instead, it makes better hot pockets than your Vita can.

Remember: You sell your Vita, that’s your fault. Which is the reason why more defective Vitas are out in the market.

  • what is wrong with you guys at sony, how in the world can you guys screw up so badly with the ps vita. if you guys are not gonna support the vita with software or marketing, then at least be at front about it and let people know it. so that they don’t make the same mistake i did and support your (false advertise) products.

and enough with the remote play already, not all vita owner like that feature!!!.

  • Didn’t SEGA keep selling the Dreamcast up to the moment it died?

I feel like the Vita still has a long life. The new patch they sent against homebrews should be proof of that….or if they killed the Vita tomorrow, then it would be one of the biggest d!&k moves in gaming history.

All I want from the Sony for the vita is cheaper memory cards, Gods Eater 2 and Legend of Heroes, trails in the sky.

  • Got it on Vita, will get it for PS4.

  • Thank you Sony.
Moving to Nintendo and XBOX One.

Wont EVER buy something from you again.

    Hope you fail.

    #NoVItaNoBuy

  • Thank you Sony for killing Vita.

    Hope you fail.

    Movindo to N1ntendo and Xb0ne.

Wont ever buy something from you again.

  • Ewww, Xbone is never an option for me. Nintendo on the other hand…..with that Xenoblade….

  • Hope you fail , Sony… i really do…

  • As long as it’s not digital only, I’ll support it.

    No disc, no sale.

  • Looks nice! I already got the Platinum for the vita version will gladly get it for this one.

  • People really need to stop complaining about the Vita.I have it and the original Tearaway and I wanted a tearaway game for the superior PS4. This is not a port, but a new game built for the PS4.As good as the original was, it is still limited by the PSViat’s lack of power. Thanks for giving me what I wanted Sony.

  • I just bought a VITA three weeks ago and I’m in love with it. Also as a suscriber of PS+ it couldn’t get any better; the system, memory card and travel pouch is begining to pay itself with the ‘free’ games.

It has a healty amount of games indeed, and I know this has been said thousands of times, but how then does Nintendo keeps 3DS very much alive and in hype when it even has way less games than VITA? Easy: Awesome Exlusives (not even Wii-U cross-play).

Thats a marketing fact, even if you love indes and jrpgs (I LOVE both), the system is going to flop if Sony does not make it appealing like Nintendo does.

We are in our right to ask Why is Sony hidding VITA from E3 and Gamescom? Is totally contradictory when they claim (on twitter) their support and games to the handheld. Why not sayig it propositionaly, directly and clear to the public and not just some quick tweeters in order to pacify the (reasonably) angry gamers (me included)?

Indies and JRPGS are a neccesary condition for the VITA but not a sufficient one by any means to keep it alive in the gaming scene. That’s a fact too, not a matter of gaming tastes.

PS: sorry if there’s too much typos, english isn’t my first language.

  • No offense Sony, or Media mollecule, but porting everything that made a portable system shine, and its owner proud, to a console, is not the way to respect the WHOLE PS family.

Tearaway is like Gravity rush, a real shiny IP for the Vita. You just broke the heart of most, and put bitter feeling and anger to many tonight.

Vita players are not outcast, we are custommers, and based on many developpers comments, damn good and loyal ones. WHY IS SONY SO NEGLECTING ???
The least would have been to reuse costly Vita engine to produce fast done second episodes of BIG NAMES first party. Uncharted, wipeout, Killzone, lbp… TEARAWAY… You have the engine, just work on new story, and reuse 90% of the assets, and the public would be happy already. You are throwing away all the money invested in R&D, and engulf more millions to port Vita’s favorite IP to a console where gamers are eating COD for breakfast.

I am missing all the logic behind Sony’s decisions. You are really loosing me events after events. And seriously, after these slap on the face, i might turn my back on Playstation for good.

  • @91 Sony should have released a second Vita episode reusing most of the work done on the first instead of turning their back on loyal Vita gamers, that have supported the IP and the Plateform, and were expecting a following up episode.

Vita gamers deserve respect and games. We love indies and RPG, but how can the only 3D plateformers we now get are PS2 collections ???

They have superb engines in every single genre, and let them die and rot… The vita and its gamers with it.

I dont know, give the assets and engine to fans, they might do a better job than first party studio….

  • I really don’t know who has upset me the most today, Microsoft and SE for ruining Tomb Raider or Sony for continuing to ruin the Vita! Thank you Sony for dropping the Vita like a hot rock once the PS4 launched! Those of us who bought a Vita at launch, and gladly paid over $300, really appreciate all the lies and broken promises these past 2 + years! I am an over-40 gamer, been gaming all my life, and I seriously doubt that I will ever purchase a game console ever again. I now regret owning a PS4 after seeing how it became the Vita-killer!

Sony’s answer for everything Vita is that “it can remote play all PS4 games and PlayStation Now is coming soon!”

But Sony, what can I play on the Vita when I am away from the internet? “We have a long list of games that you have already played on Steam or mobile devices being ported to PS4, PS3 and even Vita!”

Well, how many games will we see that are made specifically for the Vita in the coming years? “Let me tell you more about Remote Play…”

I hope with all that money you make on PS4s, you can buy a clue!

    Thanks again Sony!

  • @92 the 3DS is a casual product that sells due to Pokemon.I own a 3S and only have Zelda. If you are enjoying the Vita than what is the complaint? The Vita is a secondary device that does not compare to a console. This is not the place to discuss the Vita either way though.People should just appreciate this announcement which is great.

  • @94 The Vita has only sold 8million and PS4 has a bigger fanbase. Why drown games on an under performing device? Who only owns a Vita anyway? It is a companion which offers a limited experience. //i would rather they dump mobile gaming all together and dedicate 100% resources to the PS4 like they did with the PSX.A hand held was never needed.

  • @97 My friend you become as insulting as the gamescom conference. I am a Nomad player, not a living room player…

I bought the device as a portable console 3 years ago…no a stupid companion to a console i have no intention to buy anytime soon ( i hardly play my PS3 )
I loved the PSP to death because it nearly prevented me to buy a PS2… i expected the Vita to be close to Sony’s original statement ” a home console in the pocket ”
The original lineup was amazing…what happened then ?

Now, since sony is droping the Vita, what are my options ? Mario ? Pokemon ? Zelda ? Indie… ( thanks to Shahid, or else )…

No Thank you. Inides are great, but so far just fill the gap between RPG and PS2 collections…. We need more. Even the IOS is getting Bioshock … WTF

  • @95 Gret post that resumes precisely the feeling i have as a Day one Vita buyer.

Wake up Sony, and LISTEN to those people that invested their hard earned money on you beautifull portable console. We need more than 8bit pixelart plateformers… Rogue legacy and hohokun are great and all, but will never match Ucharted golden abyss, or Ghost of sparta…

You have running engines for about every single game types… use them, like you did on PSP, to produce sequels, even quickly done.

And stop stripping the Vita from its IPS, work on new ones for PS4 instead of wasting money and time porting GOTY games from PS3

  • Well, the Vita is done for!
