Destiny: PS4 Beta Hands-on

Today, PS4 and PS3 owners will get a chance to experience Bungie‘s galaxy-spanning epic Destiny for the first time. Assuming the role of a newly revived Human, Awoken, or Exo, players will explore the ruins of a Russian Cosmodrome and battle hordes of formidable Fallen and feral Hive, all while earning new skills and collecting increasingly effective weapons and armor.

Destiny on PS4 and PS3

I had an early opportunity to play the Beta, and I’ve collected my initial notes below. While this post is by no means comprehensive, I hope it’ll help get you up to speed before you hop in yourself. And if you’re in the Beta, please share your tips, observations, and feedback in the comments below.

If you played or read about Destiny’s Alpha last month, you might be wondering what’s changed for the Beta. The answer: plenty! Perhaps most notably, the Beta fills in many narrative gaps with pre-rendered and in-engine cinematics, fleshing out more of the backstory and making this feel much more like a world I want to explore. These scenes are fully voice-acted; your character even chimes in with his or her own voice from time to time! Your Ghost companion’s dialogue has been refined as well, and generally fits better into the overall story, complete with computerized filters and other cool audio effects that lend a bit more personality and color.

A few more enhancements I noticed in the Beta:

  • Music is more prevalent during the Beta’s more intense action sequences.
  • Screen-filling visual effects that punctuate important in-game events look to have been punched up, like a display-wide violet tinge and screen-shake when a massive ship drops a platoon of enemies onto the field.
  • Certain areas are now dubbed “Darkness Zones.” Respawning is disabled in these sections, meaning you and your Fireteam need to stay on point to make it through.
  • On the main overworld map, the Tower displays small, green icons to indicate when rewards or messages are waiting for you there.
  • The character customization system can still yield some pretty awesome looking Guardians.

For those with a more competitive nature, the Crucible — Destiny’s PvP multiplayer mode — awaits. This pits players against one another in glorious combat, and keeps things extra-interesting by tossing vehicles into the mix on larger maps (such as the moon-based level I played here). Players can commandeer large, armed conveyances or deploy their handy Sparrow whenever needed — or they can stick to an on-foot approach to ensure an instant offensive is always an option. The mode I played saw my team capturing and holding three control points, while taking special care to eliminate those who would take over our post.

These are but a few observations I made in my short time with the Beta ahead of its official launch today. Once you’re in, let’s compare notes in the comments! Destiny launches on PS4 and PS3 on September 9th this year, but you can play the Beta starting today by pre-ordering the game, either at retail or on PlayStation Store. See you in the Tower.

  • I’m about to get into the game, just finishing up the 10 gig download

  • We will see how MS will do in a week ^^ Then we have a comparison.

  • no?

  • I love how MManDevil tells us to relax and stop complaining while he’s there watching his beta download just fine. How do you get to say something like that when you clearly are not in the same position as us? Your patience didn’t get it to work for you, darchebag – luck did.

  • I redeemed my code using my vita without a problem. Then I just kept scroll to the right on my PS4 Library and spam the X button. Got it to start download. Worth a try guys.

  • I’m not in game and it says installing destiny 0.00/10.79. The 0.0 is going up obviously but I don’t feel like giving random numbers.

  • 202 I understand that you’re mad but calm down your childishness is showing, I tried and tried and then i finally got in, as I said Patience. something you obviously don’t have.

  • I pre order the game on psstore, where can i download the beta please?

  • The Beta finally worked
    I’m out

  • they wont fix it till sat/sun if we are lucky. lol

  • I am currently downloading it. I finally got through with my second code downloading a 10.97 gb file. Sony needs to stick to the gradual roll out of blockbuster games, dlc so that there are no server issues in the future. Else no one will trust they’re janky excuse for an online store.

LOL They need to use they’re facebook to do things like telling us when the network is down rather than just promoting things for us to buy last I heard twitter and facebook were free.

  • @201 – TimeSkipLuffyUS

Have you seen the article that MS will not be at 1080p in the Beta ?

The developer mentions they will try for XBOX to have 1080p when the game officially launches.

So I would say, Sony is pretty good to have the Beta at 1080p.

  • @melkor try the PS Store > Games > Demos section.

  • We are quick to forget that Xbox went through the same thing when Titanfall released. First day and it went down. Same with every Titanfall update patch and everyone jumps back in. Causes it to crawl.

It’s a beta, guys.. this is part of what they need to iron out. Stop being entitled.

  • 205 – mmandevil patience is not what’s under discussion here. this is you telling everyone to calm down while you are good to go. It’s like sitting there with a big piece of cake and telling everyone else to relax because they dont have it yet. who are you to say anything? talk about being childish.

  • @213

    So correct.

If people don’t like what happens in a Beta and the problems that can occur, I’d suggest you wait until the game is out of Beta and live.

Betas are to test for all these bugs/problems/etc.

  • Just stay cool guys you will all get the beta relax

  • 212 – entitled? why is it so bad to be entitled? i dont think most people udnerstand what that means. guess what – we’re entitled because Sony makes us pay for a service that used to be free in order to supposedly put that money towards stronger infrastructure; something that clearly is not happening.

If I took your $50 and promised you something, you didnt get it, and then complained, should I respond by telling you “stop crying, entitled brat.”

  • playstation network down as usual, its like there never really ready for a big game release.
more money needs investing into the network as it’s shoddy. Hoping it to be fixed for tomorrow so i can redeem code and download from ps store.

  • I can confirm that entering the code on a VITA does work. From there you just go to your PS4’s Library and start the download. Don’t bother with the web store at all. Tried for an hour and couldn’t even get it to load at all

If you guys are going to make paying for Plus mandatory for online play then you better make sure that you upgrade the server infrastructure. This would have been forgiveable when Plus wasn’t mandatory but that’s not the case anymore

  • Still no response to our comments I thought this was a blog

Sony says “Comments are the lifeblood of the PlayStation.Blog, and we encourage you to keep the conversation going in a relevant, constructive way”

    Where is the conversation

  • FINALLY!!!! After waiting an hour I finally got the download to start. WOOOOOOOOOOOOT!

    Keep trying everyone

  • ^^ Yep, persistence is key.

  • I just tried my Vita as i have seen others state it worked for them. I can confirm it works, and i was able to redeem the code and now i’m finally downloading it!

  • @218

What makes you think the network is down ?

As per Sony, users may experience login issues due to the number of users signing on.

You see the comment right after you that BahumatlsBack got the code on his Vita and it’s currently loading onto his PS4.

If the network were down, he wouldn’t be able to do that.

  • Is this free ????? or do i got to pre order it

  • @224

Preorder is free on Amazon as long as you cancel before it ships.

  • Mine doesn’t even give me the option to download -.- I’m really hating Sony right now; so much so that i wanna get an Xbox now >.>

  • @225

    Not free..

This Beta is only for the people that pre ordered the game on the PSN.

PS + should get into the Beta around July 31/14 I think they mentioned.

  • Its not maintenance You have half a million people trying to log on and download at the same time. Took a while but i got through in the end. Downloading pretty fast thou been on for 32 minutes and its 91 % of the way. Can’t wait. God i hope its good. Good luck everybody.

  • Ps3 version needs lots of improvements

  • Their is a support page addressing the issue weeven have a twitter post addressing the issue but on the blog NOTHING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

  • i pre order it but it says for me u r not able to purchase this product for following reason/

you do not own destiny. ???????

  • @ANBU_001

You can go to PS Store > Games > Demos > Destiny Beta to reinitiate a download if you’ve already redeemed your code.

  • 216, Your example is poor. You don’t want the service, drop the service… but you won’t because the service has value. How do you know how much they are putting back into the infrastructure? So yes, you sound entitled. You want to complain because you purchased from Amazon expecting three codes like they said and didn’t get them, fine. You complain due to what is obviously the servers being completely overwhelmed and is 100% reasonable, you sound entitled. Just my two cents on the mater.. but if you want, I’ll donate those two cents to Sony instead to help speed things along.

  • @killerscarlet_ Did you get your 3 beta codes from Bungie.net?

  • @226 the alpha was amazing even for an alpha but Sony should have expected this and been prepared for the flood of customers but it seems they just said oh well their will be issues well just wait until it blows over. No need to add the necessary servers to handle the demand

  • @227
stop spreading false information. I preordered on Amazon and I am currently downloading. Think before you post. Any preorders of destiny get it today.

  • Yea I redeemed my code. I linked it to my account. I did everything..i even took a picture and posted it on instagram…it still doesn’t give me the option to download >.>

  • Gamefaqs board for Destiny has people giving away codes since many people got 3 codes. I just entered one into my vita since there was network issues and I got mine. Downloading and updating file right now via remote play.

  • @227

no i work at game stop and when u pre order the game .

it gives u today’s date. for the beta

  • @ANBU_001 Check this link out http://www.bungie.net/en/View/Bungie/DestinyBetaFAQ and click on the “Account Profile/Redeemed Codes Page” link.

  • I got on the store.sonyentertainment.com site and redeemed my code through there and added it to my download list. Should be done by the time I get home.

  • @ANBU_001 so you used one of the 3 beta codes Bungie gave you on the PSN Store?

  • dinkin-flicka

    yes its not working

  • I never got those codes either >.>

  • @killerscarlet_ Did you check Bungie site to make sure you selected the correct platform?

  • @ANBU_001 Those are the codes you need to use. Go to the Bungie site and read the Code Redemption FAQs.

  • i gust got it

  • go to sonyentertainmentnetwork.com and redeem the codes using your laptop/pc. Then go to the ps store on your ps4 (it eventually loads) and go to games > demos > destiny beta. Hope this helps, good luck.
