Major PS4 System Update Out Tomorrow, Updates for PS Vita and PS App

At PlayStation, we love hearing the great feedback we get from our passionate community of gamers. That’s why I’m excited to announce that our highly-anticipated system software update for PlayStation 4 (v1.70) will be released tomorrow, with a huge number of your demanded features, and expanding upon what we believe is the most socially connected console experience. One feature that I’m most excited about is SHAREfactory, our new rich video editing app. In addition, we’re launching updates for PlayStation Vita (v3.15) and PlayStation App (v1.70) that will deliver greater integration with your PS4 system.

Here’s a rundown of what you can expect with tomorrow’s software updates:

PlayStation 4 v1.70 Update

  • SHAREfactory: After you update your PS4 to v1.70, an icon to download our free SHAREfactory app will appear on your PS4 system’s home screen once it’s available. Once installed, SHAREfactory allows you to easily customize your gameplay videos with special effects, video commentary with picture-in-picture capability through PlayStation Camera, and custom soundtracks using the included audio tracks or your original music imported from a USB drive. You can then share your videos on Facebook or export them to an external USB storage device. The app is packed with plenty of cool, but accessible, tools. It’s simple enough to use for beginning editors, while functioning as a rich video editor for those with more creative aspirations. Check out our new SHAREfactory video that provides a walkthrough of what you can expect:

  • Automatic Pre-download: No more waiting until after a game is released to start downloading select pre-ordered games from PlayStation Store. This new feature allows you to get to your games faster by automatically downloading select pre-ordered games up to several days in advance of the release, so that it’s ready to play as soon as the game is released on launch day. There’s also a countdown timer prior to the release of the game so you’ll know how soon your game will be available for you to start playing.
  • Option to Disable HDCP for Games: This highly requested feature will allow you to have the option to turn off HDCP for games so you can capture longer gameplay sessions directly from your HDMI output and export them elsewhere.
  • USB Export Option for Captured Gameplay: It’s now even easier to show off your heroic gaming moments and the SHAREfactory videos you create with the world using this feature to export your videos and screenshots to a USB drive. Just click on the DUALSHOCK 4 SHARE button, save your gameplay on a USB drive, and then share your proudest achievements on other social networks and other video platforms.
  • Live Broadcasting in HD and Archiving Support: We’ve increased the resolution for live broadcasts so you and your friends can watch games livestreamed in 720p HD. You can also archive your broadcasts on Twitch or Ustream and watch them again later.
  • New SHARE Options: We’ve got a number of new SHARE settings that will give you better control of what you want to share with your friends. Here is what you can look forward to:
    • Change the default gameplay recording time in the SHARE menu under Video Clip Settings.
    • Save only the video clips and screenshots you want by selecting Upload Screenshots or Upload Video Clips for each capture. Also upload video clips and screenshots during your live gameplay broadcasts.
    • Select specific Facebook audiences to share each video or screenshot with.
  • New DUALSHOCK 4 Options: New light bar settings have been added for DUALSHOCK 4, allowing you to change it to Bright, Medium or Dim in the Settings menu. The touchpad has also been updated, allowing you to navigate the on-screen keyboard using the DUALSHOCK 4 touchpad.
  • New Friends Options: It’s now easier to find Friends and send requests with the ability to search Friends-of-Friends, view Mutual Friends on another user’s profile, and accept Friend requests directly from the Friends list.
  • New Trophies Sort Option: You can now sort Trophies by rarity in the Options menu.
  • PlayStation Store Payment Support: Similar to PS3, we’re introducing Alternative Payment Methods (APMs) for PS4 for content purchased on PS Store, starting with PayPal support.
  • More PlayStation Camera Commands: More voice commands are added to PlayStation Camera, allowing you to launch the apps installed on your PS4 with the sound of your voice.
  • New PlayStation Plus Icon: For Plus members, you’ll now have the PS Plus icon appear next to your SEN ID on the login screen, home screen and other areas across the PS4 system’s sleek user interface.
  • Music Unlimited SHARE Options: With a Music Unlimited subscription, you can easily share your favorite songs with your friends by pressing the SHARE button on your DUALSHOCK 4.

PlayStation Vita v3.15 Update

  • PS4 Link Update for Remote Play: Linking your PS4 and PS Vita together will now be easier with the 3.15 update for PS Vita. It’ll enable Automatic Device Registration, which will automatically detect and pair both systems when they’re both online and the same user is signed in to both devices. This makes it even quicker for you to get started on Remote Play or access other second screen features.

PlayStation App v1.70 Update

  • Push Notifications, Friend Requests and More: This new PlayStation app update will give you the option to receive Push Notifications for select PS4 updates you want to receive, such as gameplay Invitations, Game Alerts or Friend Requests. You can also receive Friend Requests via email or text messages with the app update. Also, it’s now easier to change your profile picture right from your mobile device by uploading an image from your photo library, or taking a photo using your in-device camera.

I’ve covered a lot of the key updates in the post, and additional details can be found here.

We can’t wait until the software updates are released so you can start enjoying all of these great features. In particular, I look forward to seeing your SHAREfactory videos and seeing all the creative ways you can make your gameplay moments memorable.

Let’s keep the conversation going – we love getting feedback from you and seeing what else we can come up with to continue making PlayStation 4 the best place to play. Please let us know and we’ll continue to always serve up great content and features to you – the gamer.

More transparency i would like to be kept up to date with what you guys are working on. Make us feel apart of the team and genuinely reply to more feedback not just the positives. Ask us what should be a priority and dont assume. Should you do this well then all of us here will always have your back and support you guys through thick and thin. The more you listen the more your consoles will sell. Let us know whats coming next, and what you will work on in the future.

  • How about a setting where we can choose to have our friends pop up when they get online? some people don’t like it but alot do. Would be nice to be able to turn this feature on or off.

  • For the vita

Allow us to use a dual shock for as a controller.

    Include battery percentage

Better improvements to the web browser ( cut, copy paste )

Allow us to purchase content for all systems

Ps2 games being playable on the vita

  • Also Being able to watch my content from my portable Hard drive. I do not understand why this was taken away.

  • I LOOOOOOVE this update! this is the reason why I’ve always been a Playstation fan and will always be. Sony listens!

One thing that I would still like though is friend notifications. Being able to know when my friends signed in and signed out was a feature I loved on my PS3. I don’t really like being in the middle of a game and then going to the dynamic menu to see who’s online. I would like to just be notified so that I can continue playing my game without having to check.

Other than that Keep up the good work guys!! you guys are doing awesome!

  • Please add the Username Changer feature
Me and my friends and I’m sure thousands and thousands of more people will really like to see this feature come true!!

  • For the psn store
Stability this lag has got to go
Allow us to purchase all content for all systems via ps4 store.
Clean up the store as its difficult to locate sales on ps4 store.
Put purchased content into folders so we dont have to skim through 100 avatars, 40 demos etc

  • Can I PLEASE have 3D support??? Seriously! I’ve waited how long for it and STILL don’t have it? My PS4 will be sold if it’s not her by the next update. Sorry, but my main entertainment system can’t be one that lacks 3D support. I’ll just keep my PS3 and to hell with the PS4. This ridiculous, get it together over there.

  • For ps app,
be able to sign via the app dont move us to the browser.

The same with purchased content. Please let us do it within the app itself.

  • You should also let us hide our real name from our screen! I don’t want to see “REAL NAME then my USERNAME” I just want to see my username on screen.

  • My PS4 feature wishlist:

    1. Multimedia Playback Support
Music, Video, Album apps with DLNA and USB storage support.
And the current user interface for video player/picture viewer is awful compared to the user interface of multimedia app in
PS3, which makes me play BD movies on PS3 instead of PS4. (3D BD support is also an important reason)
PLEASE bring MULTIMEDIA APPs with BETTER UI in the next update.

    2. Enhanced Multitasking
The Xbox snap is a great multitasking feature, is it possible to bring an enhanced multitasking feature in the future update?

    3. Make Games/Apps can be organized
The new UI started from PS4 makes me annoyed when there is more and more games/apps in my PS4.
It ‘s NOT convenient !! Please bring a good way to organize these apps/games in the future update.

    4. Youtube app
Please bring an Youtube app with multitasking support , which means I can press PS button to watch game guides on
youtube without exiting my game. ( It would be awesome if this can be used with 2.)

    5. Web broswer
Please make an option that L2/R2 can be used as “stepless” zoom out / in as in PS3

  • Would love to see an option to adjust the sensitivity of the Touch Pad when using it to type. I just tried it out after the update and it is a bit too ‘fast’. Great idea but needs a little refinement. :)

  • There is no doubt that PS4 will get better and better with few updates. More sharing features are welcome. As I know you guys are listening to our feedbacks, here are my wishlist for future FW updates

1 – Friends online/offline notifications with option to select various friends from list (nobody wants to see pop up every often)

2- Media features (Look at PS3 – Nuff said) YOUTUBE APP *** MUST HAVE *** :)

    3- Organize and Organize

4- Easier guest account, some of my cousin’s/friends don’t have psn account, so please make guest account simple like turn on the controller and drop in – drop out (if any guest decides to use his/her psn they should do it manually)

5- Suspend/resume mode as promised in PS4 reveal in NYC (MAN ! time flies:) )

6- Ability to take control your friends controller

I am playing games for almost 20 years and PS4 is one of the best console I have ever had. To say it is the best, we need to have games. And as a gamer new Ip’s are the most exciting thing for me rather than repetitive series ( except uncharted series ) So please Sony bring us games as you always do and please New IP’s

    Sincerely

    Muhammed Fikri

  • SHAREfactory is the reason why I’m starting to like recording gameplay, even though I was never into it back then. Awesome update. Although, I was hoping for support for copying video & audio files to the PS4’s hard drive. So when I feel like I want to watch a movie, I don’t wanna switch the HDMI over to the laptop and set all that up when I can have it super convenient on the best entertainment system. Another thing I’m hoping for is a native YouTube app, I know it’s probably still in development, which should turn out great with it’s own PS4 layout and features.

  • Really hoping to see 3D Blu Ray support soon, please!

  • Right now im preferreing to play on my x box one since I at least can stream my music there from my computer ugh I want to be able to save my music cds to my ps4 just like the ps3 -.-

  • Hey! So, just like airJordan_Xx , I wanted to give my feedback on some things that I want in my ps4 (of course I understand the ps4 is still on the beginning of it’s life and has a great road ahead, but I want to give some advices on possible paths to follow).

    – One thing that I really miss is the music player
    – Like the ps3, trial versions of the games
    – More features for the trackpad
    – I love the “What’s new” tab! Some new ways of interaction would be nice.
    – The playstation store is a mess. There are a lot of tabs but the sorting is all wrong.

Just to be clear, I love my console! I can see a bright future for it. I just think that some tweaks would be welcome.
I look forward to new updates and surprises along the way.
    Thanks for the attention.

  • Wow awesome!
Touchpad Scroll! Paypal! Vita Remote play auto sign in! Auto Download! Yes!

  • Just updated everything lol :D Looks good, I like the dimming option on the light, should help with battery life a bit. For me the only things I would like to see added are some kind of folder system for the main screen, it’s only been a few months but I already have a giant row of games lol and it’s a little cumbersome. I would also like to see some 3D support, I realize the tech hasn’t really taken off, but for those of us with 3D TVs it’s still a really cool feature, and it’s a bummer to have to fire up my old noisy ps3 every time I wanna watch some 3D Avatar ;) lol. That’s it, thanks for supporting the platforms!

  • My Wish List:
    1. DLNA support
    2. Media Server Support ( I am not sure why this ever went away in the first place)
    3. Custom Controller Colors (nice to have)
    4. PS Eye login (facial recognition for logging in because sometimes I forget my password to my PSN account)
    5. More apps in general (Such a beautiful piece of hardware there should be loads more gaming and entertainment apps available)
    6. Dual shock 4 compatibility with PS3 ( I know you have to make money but this is just silly to me)
    7. Group Friends List
    8. Group games into categories (custom or not just an easier way to get to them)
    9. Ability to block certain content from auto saving video and screenshots (often times I have to go in and “clean” my hard drive because there are so many saved movie clips and screenshots. Some things just don’t need to be saved and we the users should be able to control that, especially when navigating on the PS menus)
    10. Continue supporting developers and gamers alike in the quest to build the ultimate gaming machine. Please continue to not only accept feedback but do something with it.

    THANK YOU!

  • Like some many others please get the DLNA functionality built in. I really do use this functionality alot.

  • PLEASE add adobe flash player support and changable backgrounds and see when my friends go online/offline. Please sony.

  • Now that you guys have added more socially connected systems, like friend requests, to both iOS and Android devices, could we be seeing some sort of gifting feature for games in the future. Wouldn’t mind buying a game, and gifting it to someone, digitally I mean.

I know there are issues with this, with sales being stacked up. Especially with PLUS to non-Plus discounts. But there could be a limit. 3 purchases to one account, or something, so that you can gift it to another. I know that a lot of PC platforms have this ability, I am unfamiliar with other consoles, although I doubt it, like Steam allow such gifting options, even to save for a rainy day. There’s also bundles they share, like by 4 copies at once. Essentially, buy 3 get a 4th copy free, so that you can share the game with your friends.

I think these sort of options for consumers would help with spreading word about games. I must admit, I’ve bought some Steam games before and sent it to my brothers, friends, cousins, just to have someone to play it with, because they didn’t want to buy it. I showed them! ;)

  • I forgot to mention 3D support…..please Please PLEASE bring back 3D support. Playing games in 3D was amazing especially COD and Uncharted.

  • Another, more relevant circumstance: I want to buy Dragon Ball Z: Battle for Z for my brother for his VITA, he has PLUS, so it’s not cheating the system or anything, but the only way to really do it is, he has a sub account under me, to fund his spending limit, add funds to my account through my credit card, and he goes to purchase it. It’s not exactly effective. Since I already own it, I cannot buy it for him through my account, although, even if I didn’t, I still could not buy it for him.

Whatever the restrictions may be on gifting, it would be very nice option in the future. The workaround is not smooth, and parents certainly would appreciate the ease of use. Someone who wasn’t a gamer, could access the store, but they would never be able to gift a game digitally, without a voucher card from a physical retail store. Still, need their account to redeem it. Cannot just send it to them through the SEN.

Food for thought. Take this GIFT. ;) See why I did there?

  • @475 The PS4 does have 3D support. Just not many games are focusing on that feature. Trine 2 does for PS4. It’s in 3D So the support is definitely there already.

  • When is WAR THUNDER coming to North America!!!!! only reason I bought this system at launch! Europe has it! make it happen

  • When will there be a native Ipad app? I hate that i open the app on my ipad and it’s a iphone only app, there is so much more screen that could be used and instead we’re limited to the iphone only. :(

  • Is there a way the PS4 camera can take photos? If not, that would be a suggestion of mine.

  • Can you please fix the 1080p flicker issue that’s been there since launch?

It happens anytime someone uses a Receiver (for surround sound) to their HDTV.

    My config:

PS4 v1.62 > Bose V25 (with latest FW) > Samsung 1080p HDTV (with latest FW).

    You can see this here:

  • lol after all, it is a “camera”

  • update is good but its giving me problems it keeps closing my cod game while im playing saying error update is need or turn off system but my sysem is updated and still closing on me

  • Pretty cool. Any chance there could be a future update where there’s pretty much a reverse PS4-PS Vita link? Playing my PS4 on my Vita is cool and all, but using the PS4 to show a video feed of my Vita, essentially making it possible to play Vita games on the big screen would be even more awesome.

  • Any chance we will ever get to use a Vita to stream ps4 games for remote play when using a Airport extreme?
