Update: PS4 system software update 1.70 is confirmed to land in North America on April 30th.
As we mentioned last month during GDC, we’ll be releasing a major system software update for PS4 that will add some exciting new features that many of you have been asking for. Today, I’m pleased to announce a few of those features from PS4 system software update (v1.70) will be available soon, including features that were incorporated as a result of your great feedback. This will be a significant update, and today we’re excited to bring you a sneak peek of just a few things you can look forward to.
Introducing: SHAREfactory
The 1.70 update will enable SHAREfactory, our new rich video editor app for PS4 that makes it easy for you to customize your gameplay videos:
With SHAREfactory, you can now easily combine your captured video clips for editing, personalize them with special effects using filters, transitions, and themes, as well as share them with your friends and social networks. SHAREfactory also allows you to personalize your videos by adding text, stickers, and a set of included audio tracks, as well as video commentary with picture-in-picture capability with PlayStation Camera. It also allows you to import your original music to add to the custom soundtrack for your video.
Share With the World
Once you’re done with your masterpiece, you can easily share your SHAREfactory videos to Facebook, or export them to an external USB storage device to upload them elsewhere, another new feature coming as part of the 1.70 system software update. Other PS4 SHARE enhancements include the ability to change the recording time of your gameplay to shorter increments, the ability to change who you share your clips with on the SHARE screen, and the removal of default saves for screenshots and video clips. In addition to these SHARE enhancements, the 1.70 update will allow you switch off HDCP, enabling you to capture video directly from your HDMI output so you can record and share longer clips of your gameplay sessions — a feature I know many of you have been waiting for. We are excited to see what the PlayStation Nation does with these new social features, and cannot wait to get them into your hands!
Play as Soon as the Game is Released
Providing you with immediate access to your games is a priority designed into PS4, and something we will always strive to make better. We’ve had a great response from PS4 fans about the Play as You Download feature, the snappy load times when launching and playing games, and the general speed and responsiveness of the UI. The 1.70 update adds features to build on this idea and make it faster to play the games you pre-order with an auto pre-download capability, which allows you to pre-download your select pre-ordered game up to several days prior to release. If you have the auto-download feature enabled, it will automatically pre-download your pre-ordered game so you can play as soon as the game is unlocked on release day.
As I mentioned earlier, some of these features were a direct result of the great feedback we’ve been getting from you, our dedicated gamer community. We enjoy listening to your comments, and encourage you to continue sharing your thoughts with us. And this is just the beginning. We’ve got a lot more coming in PS4 system software update v1.70 and beyond. The PS4 experience will constantly evolve, and new innovative ideas can come from anywhere to ensure the platform continues to deliver the best in gaming and entertainment every time you turn it on.

I copied this list because I want the same features.
1) DLNA and other streaming abilities that the home user can use with their PC’s and other electronics.
2) Music and Video player with upsampling features (music playback is excellent from PS3, on type 3)
3) PSP, PS1, and PS2 Classics Downloads and Disc(PS1/PS2) support
4) Better voice support on EVERYTHING. why can’t I say “PlayStation : Netflix : Start”?
5) External USB storage options and/or 2.5 inch 9.5mm 2TB support (reports online suggest this isn’t working)
I am hoping for a username change. I have had this username since the beginning of PS3 and now that I have changed my interests and matured, I really don’t want this username anymore. This is the only place where this username is still used. Everything else has my current username. I think you should have the option of changing your username every 5 years or something. Or even once a new system comes out.
just a quick question about usb export i’ve seen in the comments, exactly how are we able to use our usb’s to export videos?

A YouTube app would be a good addition to the video services of the PS4.
I don’t have a PS3, so I don’t feel the need for “dynamic themes” as others do, but I think it’d be cool to at least change the color of the home menu/bar. A red, purple, green, or orange theme, maybe? The blue is nice, but I love purple. :D
The biggest thing I want right now, is friend notifications. Like the PS3 has. Notify me when my friend comes on or goes off. How come that was taken from the PS4?
I think the option to move and pin certain game/downloads closer to the beginning of your bar would be a good idea. Why is the Library at the end? I have to scroll through 20 games just to see a list of all my downloads? Doesn’t seem too efficient to me.
Nice work so far. I hope a few more things can be updated to get us closer to the ever-elusive perfection! Can never please everyone unfortunately.

You’re not getting what other commenters are saying, they are asking you when is the PS4 going to get a YouTube app or be able to upload DIRECTLY to YouTube. Yes, we know that it can now upload to USB which can upload to YouTube from that, but that’s not DIRECTLY FROM THE PS4, TO YOUTUBE, THAT’S DIRECTLY FROM THE PS4, TO A USB, TO THE COMPUTER, TO YOUTUBE. You moron. Answer the question properly this time, WHEN will the PS4 get a YouTube application?
Hey how about you fix the soft patches that wont allow the use of plex web or maybe i dunno ADD DLNA SUPPORT
How about making PS Vita use as controller on the PS3 and PS4 more; i got good idea layout how it would work for both system’s. When it comes to playing video games with Vita as the controller it should work if layout is sample that would work for the missing buttons as well.
When will Skype update the App on the PS Vita to use Text chat and group calls? I love to have these’s on the PS Vita Skype App someday. Facebook could need update to fix some problems and bugs plus make it more better to use. So much i want to share and see happen with the PS Vita next update that could tune the system better to run with good things.
Adding simple color options for the UI would be appreciated while you explore more UI customizing ideas. I would really love a green background.
So will the share button work like it’s supposed to now? Almost every time I use the share button when playing Battlefield 4 it doesn’t record the last 15 minutes of gameplay. It only records the first 15 min of gameplay so when something cool happens and I hit the share button it saves gameplay from 45 minutes ago. The recorder does seem to reset and work properly after using it the first time though. I know a lot of people are having this problem and that it’s not exclusive to BF4. I don’t know if sony has acknowledged this issue yet.

I don’t know if anyone has touched on this but we need to be able to pause and resume downloads. On the internet explorer we need to be able to delete the frequently used pages more than checking one at a time. Where is the youtube and facebook apps. I personally would like to see a Fox news app.

this is great. Being able to put the clip onto an external usb storage device is exactly what me and LOTS of others are looking for. I know that the PS4 has just released and right now we can’t expect everything to be perfect or be available but it’s definitely worth the wait. BUT… When are name changes coming?…. Guys look at my name. “basketballboy13”. I’m 19 years old. My friends make fun of me because of this old name I made 6 years ago. it’s pretty embarrassing.

Great features and I am looking forward to them but i have some more questions:
1) The PS4 UI looks good but don’t you think it would be even better if it had more customization? such as dynamic backgrounds that one can interact with.
2) Twitch streaming has been awesome but the camera box is a little too small and the fact that its only on one location of the screen doesn’t make it as awesome if one could have more options.
3) Giving us the option to export our share button videos to a usb is really awesome but if there was a Youtube app that we could upload direct to, it would be even awesome.
4) More basic voice commands not like Kinect just basic ones thats all.
5) external HDD support would be a great feature along side the ability to put our own hard drive which is awesome BTW!!!

I love dynamic themes and I think you should try dynamic avatars too.
I’d definitely also like to see voice-command streamlining implemented in a future update. To me, the point of voice commands is to take something that would normally require navigating through multiple menus and turn it into a simple “say this and it happens”. That transforms voice commands from a simple novelty into something that actually has utility.
A good example is standby mode: As things are I have to say “Playstation” (wait for a menu) “Power” (wait again) “Enter Standby Mode”. Add the slight latency issues and I almost feel it would be easier to just use the controller. However, if I could just say “Playstation enter standby mode”, or at least cut out that middle “power” step, then it becomes more convenient.
The branching menus are nice when you’re just learning what the voice commands are, but once you’ve gotten a handle on them all you should need to do is say “Playstation”, then what you want the PS4 to do.
As a positive comment I’ll say that with regard to the PS4 Camera vs. my experience with the original Kinect this is MUCH more responsive to voice commands and seems to recognize what I’m saying right away about 99% of the time. The Kinect would work 50-60% of the time on a good day.

YouTube Share Upload, Yes i know you can export video with Sharefactory, But most people will only export if they wanted to edit video’s with computer video software. It should be hassle free to a major site like YouTube.
Chat / Party – Inviting, Should be a simple step with inviting friends, it should not ask you over and over if your sure. It should be simple.
Can i turn off the Light Bar on my controller yet? Saves power has no use with no PlayStation Camera.
Is there any plans to level the cost of digital games for physical copies? Like, Buying a new physical copy of a game is $59.99, same with digital. But you can resale that physical copy at anytime you want. I hope i said this right.
So if there is music support for this new share feature, does that mean out own music would be in the form of mp3s, does the update include mp3 support? And if so are we able to import music from a USB? Since it was earlier stated that you couldn’t import video from a USB?
How long will we be able to record our gameplay if we disable HDCP?

Only care about DLNA, everyone has been asking since day one so please sort this out Sony, having to rely on 3rd party apps for streaming is just silly.
I doubt you will say but I am guessing when you say “SOON’ that means the patch will be out before this time next month. Because if it’s not I would ask you to stop using SOON because you lost it’s meaning. Well at the very least have very loose meaning of the word SOON.
Please let us change our PSN names with the next update. Even if it is just once or if we have to pay for it. I cannot stand my name anymore and do not know why I even picked it. Please let us change our names.
I bought a PS4, but sincerely i think the PS3 is better. I can’t play movies, Pictures, Music, just play games!…..Do something serius…..i’m desappointed with you
I’m so glad I can leave a comment! Sad I know. Never done this before. Hopefully it gets seen. The UI could really use some tweaks if you ask me. Like allow for categorization I suppose. I doubt that makes sense. It’s just that having one long flow of applications etc from left to right is rather, how should I put this, lame. I’m sorry. Don’t mean to be harsh. Just speaking my mind. Another thing I would love to personally see is yes, themes. Either that or wallpapers or whatever. There’s probably more on my mind I just can’t think of them right now. Oh! Will PS4 ever have a screensaver type function like the PS3? My HDTV would be very grateful! I’m also waiting for DLNA and MP3/DivX playback. That’d be awesome! (Those are also reasons why I still have my PS3!)
this is a great software update but you should add the ability to film with your camera with the recorded items instead of having the comentation added later on in the video editer.
This is AWESOME… More the USB stick option for those who have their own editing software on the PC..
Now I dont have to upload my 15 minute video’s to Facebook, then re download them to my PC. My Upload is 1mbps.. so 3 hours to upload a video….

Is the issue regarding hitting Share and footage from the last time you pressed the PS button being fixed? For instance, it’s all over the forums; if you hit the PS button, it clips the recording, and then doesn’t start again automatically. So, the epic moment I wanted to save is replaced by footage from an hour ago.
I don’t want a mobile YouTube app for ps4, I want the full PC webpage to work properly on it. It’s much more comfortable, complete and functional.
Will this update fix the browser so that i can read my Facebook messages without it telling me I’ve run out of system memory ?
Will it also provide us with flash or a youtube app?
It would be very awesome to remove the HDCP from gaming on PS3 as well or to put up a small hdmi device that would do it for you.

Even if true dynamic themes don’t come too soon I hope we can get options to display the current UI. I have maybe 20-30 games, etc and it sucks that they all scroll in one looooooong line. My PS3 has nearly 100 games. I’d hate to have to scroll thru it like that. Maybe organize them in groups of ten or so. Also the What’s New section should be neater.
PS3 needs Quick Save; you can save anytime doing game by holding R3 and L3 down at the same time. Luck base trophy’s are pain in the butt. It would be nice to have this on PS Vita and PS4 as well. Call it “Quick Save” = save anytime doing gameplay and with Quick Load you can load the game back up in the same place you were before.
