Update: PS4 system software update 1.70 is confirmed to land in North America on April 30th.
As we mentioned last month during GDC, we’ll be releasing a major system software update for PS4 that will add some exciting new features that many of you have been asking for. Today, I’m pleased to announce a few of those features from PS4 system software update (v1.70) will be available soon, including features that were incorporated as a result of your great feedback. This will be a significant update, and today we’re excited to bring you a sneak peek of just a few things you can look forward to.
Introducing: SHAREfactory
The 1.70 update will enable SHAREfactory, our new rich video editor app for PS4 that makes it easy for you to customize your gameplay videos:
With SHAREfactory, you can now easily combine your captured video clips for editing, personalize them with special effects using filters, transitions, and themes, as well as share them with your friends and social networks. SHAREfactory also allows you to personalize your videos by adding text, stickers, and a set of included audio tracks, as well as video commentary with picture-in-picture capability with PlayStation Camera. It also allows you to import your original music to add to the custom soundtrack for your video.
Share With the World
Once you’re done with your masterpiece, you can easily share your SHAREfactory videos to Facebook, or export them to an external USB storage device to upload them elsewhere, another new feature coming as part of the 1.70 system software update. Other PS4 SHARE enhancements include the ability to change the recording time of your gameplay to shorter increments, the ability to change who you share your clips with on the SHARE screen, and the removal of default saves for screenshots and video clips. In addition to these SHARE enhancements, the 1.70 update will allow you switch off HDCP, enabling you to capture video directly from your HDMI output so you can record and share longer clips of your gameplay sessions — a feature I know many of you have been waiting for. We are excited to see what the PlayStation Nation does with these new social features, and cannot wait to get them into your hands!
Play as Soon as the Game is Released
Providing you with immediate access to your games is a priority designed into PS4, and something we will always strive to make better. We’ve had a great response from PS4 fans about the Play as You Download feature, the snappy load times when launching and playing games, and the general speed and responsiveness of the UI. The 1.70 update adds features to build on this idea and make it faster to play the games you pre-order with an auto pre-download capability, which allows you to pre-download your select pre-ordered game up to several days prior to release. If you have the auto-download feature enabled, it will automatically pre-download your pre-ordered game so you can play as soon as the game is unlocked on release day.
As I mentioned earlier, some of these features were a direct result of the great feedback we’ve been getting from you, our dedicated gamer community. We enjoy listening to your comments, and encourage you to continue sharing your thoughts with us. And this is just the beginning. We’ve got a lot more coming in PS4 system software update v1.70 and beyond. The PS4 experience will constantly evolve, and new innovative ideas can come from anywhere to ensure the platform continues to deliver the best in gaming and entertainment every time you turn it on.

How about someone owning up to the terrible issues with BF4! If it is not Sony’s fault, how about holding Dice and EA responsible because they make Sony look bad. The lock ups and the lag are frustrating!
I could care less about sharing features. How long until bluetooth support is added for headsets not made by sony? It is garbage that my $200 set does not work with the PS4.
I would like to see an option for the browser to “freeze” where ever I am on the page. For example, when I was playing a game I pulled up the browser to look at a guide and when I went back into the guide after playing for a bit, I had to wait for everything to reload and find my place. A great model to go by is how Chrome acts on an Android phone. When I pull up a guide and then minimize the app, it is still in that spot when I return to it later.
Alright… Now I can go back to 1080p again.
This is great news.. Hopefully some of the other much needed requests come available soon.. In game music, ability to download something from ps3 or vita from my ps4 without having to hook up my ps3 to do so, dynamic themes, please… With the extra power i’d love to see more uh, dynamic, dynamic themes lol. not just a lot of moving pictures back and forth…
In regards to Bluray functionality, can we please get the preview image back when selecting the disc (instead of just a blank disc icon)? You have it on the PS3, it can’t be that hard to implement on the PS4 as well.
okay now i know you can take a usb device and import it some place like youtube but i want to upload it right from the share button not to use a usb drive and plug it in the computer. i want to upload my gameplay right away
also would be great to be able to watch mp4 or avi videos on ps4 like i could with the ps3, or use as a media server etc.. the ps3 has a lot of features that the ps4 does not..
These new features are cool, but I still can’t believe how backwards Sony went by not implementing things that seemed to be obvious with this version. I go and try to stream my PC movies and to my amazement PS4 didn’t support that. What!? I love Sony products, but the omission of media streaming along with other missing feature was really a let down. I really hope this firmware update will implement it. If Sony has no intention of implementing they should just come out and say it without circling around the issue.
Will we be recieving better customization like ps3 had and hopefully friend notifications again?!
Wicked Late to the Game here but Love my PS4 and the cross Play feature between PS Vita and the PS4. Something totally underutilized by folks if you ask me.
Happy to see you guys are working hard on updates, I know how hard it can be to manage expectations for updates. I work with developers for a Major Website and our development cycles are intense. I am sure you get this a lot but, have you guys thought about working with Google to get Youtube and Chrome on the system? Getting all the way into a page and just before I get to my content, recieving the Flash issue is frustrating. Also, would it be possible to get Skype as a client? Would be amazing to videochat with my brother every now an again.
another thing, the vita is dying.. no two ways about it.. i didn’t buy a 250 dollar machine to play fez on .. i bought it to play games like killzone mercenary.. where are all those games?? isn’t the goal of new hardware to move forward?? vita is dying and the ps4 has less features then the ps3 did when it launched.. I really hope the trend starts changing.. more indie games are getting released then full retail games these days.. again. I didnt buy a couple hundred dollar ps4 to play king oddball on.. Please step it up in the game dept.. and features dept..
Please add 3d bluray support!! I hate having to connect the PS3 (the original giant guy) just to watch 3D movies. I can barely fit the wii-u, xbox one, PS4 and the audio receiver in the entertainment center as it is. This would be a huge help!
i dont understand how the ps4 didnt come with 3d support out of the box… lots of head scratching ommisions…
Wish List:
1) Look at trophies, when you are offline.
2) Means of Organizing games into sub categories for easier browsing
3) Trophy sorting options like “complete trophies first” etc.
4) PSP, PS1, and PS2 Classics Downloads and Disc(PS1/PS2) support
5) See your friends pop up, when they come online/offline
6) Better loading stuff up, like when I am in a game and I try go to a party chat, it will slow up and it takes 30 seconds before I can do anything.
7) Better voice support on everything. Why can’t I say “PlayStation : Netflix : Start”?
8) Improve the live stream because it needs work.
9) When you get a message, it should say that same time. Cause when I look at the message it says, 1 minute ago but I just got it.
10) External USB storage options and/or 2.5 inch 9.5mm 2TB support (reports online suggest this isn’t working)

This Is Cool But Where Is The UPDATE for us to be able to listen to our own music instead of music unlimited and watch our own mp4 or avi files like we were able to on ps3 this is a huge step back i am tired of having to switch from my ps4 to my ps3 so i can watch some cool videos or listen to my music that i cant find on music unlimited Hurry Up Please Sony This was Promised Last Year or did you guys forget or is it because your trying to cash in as long as you can on the monthly subscription which i think should be free if you already paying for playstation plus.

Is with the logos and colors of the mlb teams, some of the top players…for example, the Yankee ui will have the pinstripes, the digital version of Derek Jeter…
I love my PS4, but it seems so limited for a machine that has so much power!!
How about DLNA or Plex apps? And how about support for Google Music so i can listen to my own music while I play? I do it with a seperate stereo now but its annoying. Some more options making it more Media Center like would be great. I have so many friends that chose Xbox ONE over PS4 just because of that and now I have fewer friends to play games with. We need to catch up and make them jealous Sony!
More features for the touch pad, e.g. using the touch pad to type with the on screen keyboard, UI surfing with the touch pad or interacting with dynamic themes ( which I am really looking forward to ). The touch pad is a major feature on the PS4 controller and I really hope with later updates that we see more use of it
*Options to adjust the sensitivity of the touch pad ( in relation to my previous comment ).
*Sorting trophies by date earned.
*Interactive Dynamic themes.
*Save multiple network connections for easier setup.
*Status update/ profile comments.
*Categories for friends list, e.g. BF4 friends, PS4 friend, or Close friends.
I hope they make a YouTube app soon.
I love my PlayStation 4, but there are a few thing I need for it to bet perfect. Full YouTube support, PlayStation 1-3 and PSP game support, theme support, full USB support were I can plug in a external HDD (we need full USB support on PlayStation 3 to), the ability to lower and change color to what we want on the light bar and PlayStation 4 power light, DualShock 3 support, better voice control, PlayStation Vita content manger support, and less work work to turn off the DualShock 4. Thank you for reading and all I ask for is for these options/support to be on PlayStation 4, thank you again for reading.

I am happy to hear about a major update coming. My main requests would be for some sort of organization options for the UI like many others have mentioned. Also, since Sony was the original one to push 3D and is now bringing 4K content it is disappointing that I cannot use my PS4 for these things. I have 4K movies and would like to use my PS4 to play them. I have to go to my PS3 Netflix app to stream 3D movies. I keep finding myself back to my PS3, not just for the game library available to me, to use applications like Netflix because it has more streaming options available and has others like HBO GO. I know these improvements should be coming but the more reasons I have to keep my PS4 on and not have to switch to another device to do these things is a positive in my book. Keep up the good work. I look forward to future updates.
I would love the ability to hide unused apps, especially in the Video area. I’m never going to use the WWE app, for example. I really don’t need it cluttering up my menu. All I really want to see is Netflix, Crunchyroll and maybe a Youtube app if one is ever released. I have no need for the others.

I do not know how much attention is given to comments this far to the back of the list but I really hope you see this. I just had an issue where I really wanted to share a video clip of myself playing BF4 but other players names were in the footage. If I could edit their names out I could share screens and flicks all I want without fear of “Blowback”. This is something that really needs to be done.
Could we have a YouTube app please? And can we mp3 music while playing games.. That’s something that would attract a lot of people to playstation 4. Could we also have some kind of update allowing us to turn in and off our controller light as when you make the whole room dark and the tv is on it’s distracting? And I would also like to change the colour every now and again.. I’m not asking for a lot just something’s I’ve heard other people talk about aswell as me thankyou:)
Are yall ever going to fix the bug to where if the person that is playing has a strict nat type they cant download anything over 4.0 GB from the playstation store?

I’m so glad this feature is coming to the PS4.Alot of my PSN friends as well as myself would love Sony to consider adding the Youtube app/integration in so that we can upload straight from the PS4 to youtube.I say this because I’m multi-console owner.It would be beneficial to Sony in my opinion.Again thanks for listening to your fans/consumers.

Will we be able to change the background on the ps4 desktop like on the ps3 sometime in the near future?
I truly look forward to this SHAREfactory thing. I discovered a few days ago that I couldn’t upload my captures to my external HDD. The biggest consumption of HDD space on my PS4 is apparently because of my captures; over 100GB has been used, whereas the games and saved data total up to MB’s.
MP3 support would be very nice, too; I want to experiment with the music importation feature in Ground Zeroes. Apparently PS3 users can import music, but so far not here on PS4.
It goes without saying that the functionality of the PS4’s UI felt very limited, but it’s nice to see that significant updates are inbound, one that I find to be a priority (music uploading, importation, etc). Video-editing sounds like it could be fun, too.

Hi…When this will be released? Are you guys planning to get skype or any other chat messenger into ps4 so we could chat to our family and friends?! I am planning to get the ps4 camera and it would be a great idea if I could use ps4 and ps4 eye camera to chat with my family and friends.
I am highly upset with way this crap works put a crap ton of money in this system to up grade from my ps3 to the ps4 an I still have to result to using my old system that the new one can’t do, examples you can use anything that uses adobe flash another is that i cant upload pics,movies,music, the only to do things unless I pay more money wtf . Why release a system thats not ready to see the full potential of a system that you are pushing on your loyal gamers,the last system was user friendly didn’t have to double pay for internet thats what made it stand out from xbox to begin with. Now PlayStation is acting like xbox money hungry punks.

Playstation has stated PS4 is focused on Gaming more than PS3 did. PS3 was more of a all in one system.
