PlayStation Plus: January Preview

It’s almost time for the New Year, and we’re ready to kick-off 2014 in a big way. January’s Instant Game Collection will offer PlayStation Plus members loads of amazing titles, starting off with a new PlayStation 4 title — Don’t Starve. A wilderness survival game wrapped in a cute art style, you’ll take control of a Gentleman Scientist trying to make his way home from a mysterious place. Be warned – this is one of those games where you’ll die a lot, but if you ever get frustrated, just look at how cute your buddy Chester is and I’m sure everything will be okay.

For PlayStation 3 owners, you’ll be able to download three critically acclaimed games – DMC Devil May Cry, BioShock Infinite and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. DMC Devil May Cry is a reboot of the beloved franchise, and while Dante may have received a haircut and a new backstory, his weapons and fighting style should be fairly familiar to fans.

Created by the same folks who brought us BioShock, BioShock Infinite has received multiple Game of the Year nominations. This isn’t your average first-person shooter, you’ll gather vigors throughout your journey that will fling your enemies sky-high or unleash a horde of birds to peck at your foes.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons tugs at your heartstrings as you take control of two brothers (who would’ve guessed?), trying to cure their ailing father. You’ll be handling the sons with each analog stick, so once you get the hang of controlling two characters at once, you’ll need to solve various puzzles in order to save the day.

This month PlayStation Vita owners will be able to download Worms: Battle Island and Smart As. Worms: Battle Island stays true to the classic Worms formula of charming turn-based strategy gameplay. You can customize your wormy soldiers and use crazy weapons to take out the opposition.

Finally, Smart As will become your brain’s new best friend. Run through a series of mind-boggling challenges, and see where you stack up against your friends and other people in the world on the leaderboards. If you practice every day, maybe one day you’ll hit the top.

We’re also trying something new this month – we’ve created a video preview highlighting all of the titles you’ll receive as a Plus member, so give it a look and let me know what you think in the comments below!

  • Love the video! Nice touch, keep it up.

  • Holy smokes! Great friggin’ month of free games! Way to go, Sony! Can’t wait to try out Don’t Starve, skipped over both DMC and Brothers when they first came out so looking forward to those, and definitely need to use my Vita to keep my old-ass brain from getting even weaker with Smart As! LOL.

I’m super stoked for this month’s update; I’m glad to see Sony really stepping up the pressure on the competition – this is smart, smart business from them.

  • Unbelievable. You guys are the best. As a customer we sure complain a lot, but Playstation plus is the best value I have ever seen in my 30 years as a gamer. Great job, team and have an excellent 2014. Greatness is here.

  • I bought Bioshock Infinite on day one with the season pass, it’s an amazing game (I got platinum trophy) aswell, great game for Playstation + , I’m not complaining BUT i am waiting for an amazing sale deal next week! Have Fun Guys!

  • nice to see free games on ps 4 and ps vita not likeing the fact ps3 is still getting more games when ps3 is old and anyone can buy a ps4 its the same price when ps3 came out if anything cheeper when ps3 1-4 days of its relesse

  • Did I just read that correctly? Bioshock Infinite and DMC? Wow, I’m on it. Two great games I’ve never gotten around to. I can’t even keep up with all these free/discounted games.

FYI, My PS4 hasn’t been turned on for a week because I’m trying to 100% Bit.Trip Runner 2. Great game and perfect on the Vita. I got on PS Plus for PS3 a while back but it’s perfectly at home on the Vita.

  • Who narrated the video?

  • Bioshock Infinite AND DMC!!! WOOT! Great month

  • That’s one helluva way to kick off 2014! So awesome!! Really excited to sink my teeth into Don’t Starve and Bioshock Infinite.

  • great list

  • good thing i didnt get rid of my ps3. the ps4 selection is lacking right now

  • Possibly the greatest list since I’ve started with PS Plus, can’t wait to play don’t starve DMC and brothers

  • WIN. I beat Bioshock Infinifte GREAT GAME. Ready to play DMC

  • This is a great list of offers. Sony has really been doing their PS Plus customers right, and I hope it stays positive and they keep it up!

  • You’re doing very well Sony !

  • I assume we dont get BioShock 1 free with Infinite this way?

  • Hooolyyyy!!! What an update!! Besides the fact that I just bought Bio Infinite, I was so looking forward for buying DmC and Brothers!!

I know there’s nothing worth it for the Vita this month, but that’s alright cause Ive been busy with Sonic and I just ordered Tearaway!!

Maaaan this is gonna be a hell of a month!!!

  • Such mixed feelings. That PS3 lineup is fantastic and amazing!

…but the Vita lineup is just so, so horrible.

    And what about PS4???

  • Sony must be confused since they are setting off fireworks in the Winter season.

2014 is beginning with a bang.

Great Selection even though I have Infinite on my 360 I would gladly play it again. And brothers I also have on my 360 but will play it again. I just Hope DMC will be the first game for the PS3.

  • I am not even mad that I just bought bioshock. Incredible series, and I hope that this makes people buy their season pass, make them some more money so they can make a killer next gen bioshock game. I own all three games on pc and ps3, that is how good they are.

  • Looks great. I already have bioshock Infinite and the season pass great game by the way. Can’t w8 to play don’t starve. Now all I need is a ps4. :( couldn’t get one for Xmas they were all sold out. But any way here’s to new and great beginnings!!!!

  • Nice selection on PS3! …even though I already own 2 of those games (BI and DMC, including Vergil’s Downfall) on Steam.

While I do look forward to playing Brothers, I’m still waiting on those JRPGs…even though I’ve already played most (if not all) of the ones on PS3.

  • Thanks for the info, Steimer!

    What a great line-up. :)

  • I thought we got past getting PSP games cleverly packaged as Vita games???

Worms Battle Islands is a PSP title. :(

I’m also a little perturbed by the fact that DMC was on sale for Halloween and so I bought it only for it to go free 2 months later.

I will say great pick for Bioshock Infinite I almost bought that when it was on sale last month (glad I didn’t). Brothers looks great and so does Smart as…

I wish we got all the titles on the same day like Europe does, because I hate waiting for the Vita title at the end of the month. Either way thanks sony keep up the good work.

Just please avoid PSP titles if you can.

  • Amazing job that the team is doing.
I hope the rest of the year will be as good as the beginning

  • For anyone who hasn’t tried Smart As… give it a try! It’s actually a ton of fun!

  • Suck a kickarse lineup this month!
Looks like I’m downloading Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, Don’t Starve, Smart As… since I already have DmC & Bioshock Infinite already.
    Keep up the great work!
Keep putting the preview videos of the upcoming games for the Instant Game Collection every month.

  • Woah. DmC (Always wanted to try that but never wanted to buy that), Bioshock Infinite (always wanted to try that but never wanted to buy that), and Smart As (always wanted to try that but wasn’t interested in buying that).

Damn. Thats three in a row. Kudos to Sony for bring a superb January for PS+ owners. Alo kudos to 2K, and Capcom for always delivering on some good deals for PS3 owners. Whether its borderlands 1+2 or Resident Evil 5, or chronicles you guys deliver some good games to the service. I’d also add in Eidos or Square Enix Europe for pushing Sleeping Dogs, Deus Ex, Hitman and other fabulous games to the service. Hopefully Tomb Raider can join soon as well! (But I might just get the definitive version on PS4 instead of playing the subpar PS3 version even if it does come to the service). And of course Sony themselves for all the amazing first party games we’ve got to play. I’m having a blast with soul sacrifice and just finished Tearaway which was well worth the $18.

  • Great list and keeps the ps3 fresh and shows why being a plus member is worth the money unlike other companies. Also thanks for letting people use Apps even if they are not plus members this it a great thing for some of us.

  • Fantastic selection, Playstation team. Thanks!

  • Also, I laugh at the brothers game coming to PS+. Not based on its quality but the fact that it was on sale on XBL a few days ago and was boasted at the VGXs as the premier xbox 360 game of the year. LOL. Putting salt in their wounds as PS3 owners now get to enjoy Xbox’s game of the year which was originally a timed exclusive? lol. So much for games with gold. :)

  • Wow, wow, wow. This is the best month that PS+ will have had in its entire history. What a fantastic line-up! I came SO CLOSE to buying both DMC and BioShock Infinite during this holiday season’s sales. But, free? Why, yes, thank you.

  • Holy Crap! That’s a GREAT line up!!!

Seriously, I can’t believe it! I only own a PS3, and these are 3 excellents games!! I’m using the “!” too much, I’m so glad :D

DMC: I’m not a big fan of DMC, but I’ve heard that this is a good hack’n’slash, so it’ll be good to play it ;)

Bioshock Infinite: This is the one that astonished me the most! I was planning to buy the retail version, but now I get to play it for free :D :D :D

Brothers: I’m so glad for this one, I can’t say that I was waiting it in the IGC at all. I want to play it, it has so many good critics.

PS4: I’ve heard so many good things about Don’t Starve, so it will be a good addition to my download list, I mean, someday I will have a PS4 :B

    Magnificent work!! Keep it up!!

    Happy New Year ^^

  • Perfect I’ve never played Bioshock Infinite or DMC. That’ll really help pass the time until more ps4 games release. I don’t care for games like Don’t starve or any of the other games this month. Thanks.

  • This is unreal. Wow, you guys are awesome.

  • Wow, what an incredible way to start the new year! I know it is a mix of efforts from the Plus team and the developers that offer these games. But I just want to thank them and hope that more incredible service will come for us paying customers!

I already bought DMC during the Halloween sale for and it is a blast! Just because it’s not the original Dante doesn’t mean it’s a bad game. It still has great combat and a story that is actually relevant to today’s society, if people think with a different perspective.

I am currently doing research on the other games offered. But I’ve read in the past on an article claiming the Bioshock Infinite is one of the “Best games ever”, even though the article came out before TLOU.

    But still, incredible service!

  • Great selection… but… dangit! I bought DmC 2 months ago… then it went on sale for $20, now it’ll be free? T_T Uuuuuugh… I really regret buying it to begin with, the $20 price tag (If I had bought it then) to this wouldn’t have killed me so much. But 40 + ALL DLC (Cheaper then Ultimate Edition I might add o.O ) AND then this? D: Shoot me.

Wish there was some kind of JRPG On the list next month as well, over that Brothers game, but I was curious about it too, so~ suppose it won’t hurt to look.

(Not falling for Tales of Graces f yet. Waiting til it’s free)

  • The video came out great Kristine. You guys should have started making those a long time ago.

  • Awesome update.
One month and all the games worth more than 1 year subscription.

  • Wow. Amazing line up of free games. Thank you Sony for being the best place to play games.

  • 1 month worth the $49.99

  • I really like the video. Lets you see a little bit of each game and talks about the play style. Gotta say, this is one of the best months I’ve seen from Playstation Plus since I’ve been a member. If only we could play PS3 games on PS4… Come on Gaikai…

  • Awesome Xmas present! And thanks for the early update. :)

  • man I bought dmc for 13 and Bioshock for 14 like a month or 2 ago. Oh well still great for those who havent bought it.

  • I saw this posted on Kotaku, but came here just to make sure this was real. This is AMAZING.

I wanted Bioshock Infinite to play the DLC, but I already sold the game. I almost bought Brothers, DmC AND Don’t Starve recently.

Seriously, best PS+ month in a LONG time. Thanks Sony!

  • This is one hell of a list. I can’t speak to the Vita titles (though who can say “No” to a Worms game) as I don’t have one, but the PS3/PS4 titles are amazing. DMC is probably one of the more overlooked games of the last year, Brothers is a game I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about, and “Dont Starve” has looked like a lot of fun and a nice change-up to my current PS4 line-up. Oh….and Sony is also choosing to give us unquestionably one of the top 3 games of the year in Bioshock Infinite!!!

So once again, let us all thank Sony for continuing to support and reward its loyal fan base. And also it’s great to see how much support they are continuing to give to the PS3 in order to make sure that those who haven’t gotten a PS4 yet (or still enjoy playing their PS3 and all the games on it) have more than enough great titles to enjoy. Nicely done Sony.

  • Awesome line-up! I was about to buy Brother on a competing platform because it was on-sale so thanks for saving me the money! I added two more years to my subscription so now I am all set until 2018. I’m excited to see how the program grow and evolve over time. I have PS3, PS4 and Vita so I’m getting the full benefit. Thanks for putting together such a valuable program!

  • Never change guys, you’re freaking awesome.

  • Hey, finally some games I don’t already have, but am interested in! Thanks!!

  • Will add DMC & Bioshock to my download list but probably never play them. XD Got so many great AAA titles through Plus already. Will download Brothers as well. Still need to try the demo.

    Great lineup this month! :D
