Guacamelee! Rolls onto PS3 and PS Vita Today

Hey, all! I’m extra excited to announce that Guacamelee! comes out today on PS3 and PS Vita via PSN. We’re releasing the game as part of the Spring Fever promotion: $14.99 will get you both the PS3 and PS Vita versions, with a 20% discount for PlayStation Plus members. Take a look…

Still there? Then allow me to add that Guacamelee! is a metroid-vania style brawler that supports Cross-Buy, Cross-Save, Cross-Control, has a precious Platinum trophy, and comes complete with rapid punching action.

Punch, punch, punch! Speaking of which, you may now be saying, “Hey guy, what’s up with all of the punch talk?”

Well, when we started making Guacamelee! we knew we wanted to include punching, but not just ordinary punching. We built a proof-of-concept demo, a video of which I have included below for your approval.

As you can see, we had blocking, we had holds, and we had charge-up moves. You’ll be interested to know that we now have none of those things! Why, you ask? Turns out that stuff slows down the pace of exploring an open world game, and like my wife always says, pacing is everything! But now I’ve disappointed you, so let me tell you what we do have:

  • We have punching and kicking… and posing!!!

Punch, Punch, Kick, Punch, Pose

  • We have throws! You can even buy more powerful throws as you progress.
  • We have rolling! If you’re overwhelmed or just feeling fancy, you can roll through enemies and parry their attacks.

Like a graceful cabbage, the Luchador Roll screams “style!”

  • We have overlapping worlds! Enemies can exist in different parallel dimensions, and if you’re not in the same dimension they are invincible. It’s just that simple.
  • We have special moves! They are extra powerful, and some enemies have aura-shields that can only be broken using specific attacks.

An explosion of color… into the face

Add that all up (punching, rolling, throwing, overlapping worlds, special moves and aura-shields) and I hope you’ll agree that Guacamelee! is the Number-1 Mexican-Themed Co-op Multiplayer Dimension-Swapping Metroid-vania Beat-em-up Platformer of the season. Hmmm?

  • Thank you very much. I love your games and I’m looking forward to finally playing your latest =)

  • Been refreshing the store for a while, want to throw my money at you guys as soon as I can. Cross-buy, cross-save, cross-controller, and a day one discount for PS+ subscribers? Hell, that’s the kind of thing I want to support and encourage. Game looks like tons of fun, and I wish you good luck with it.

  • totally buying this within the hour! #elpollo! quick question for the dev……is it possible that the chicken becomes an actual avatar for the psn??? im currently using that for my twitter handle, but would LOVE to have it as my avatar for my psn

  • Bought a copy of Guacamelle! Opted for the Vita version since i’ll be playing it the most and to throw it some extra support even though it is buy-1-get-both. Thanks for doing this, guys! I can’t wait to play it.

  • Found it Graham, thanks. it works well, but I expected to be able to control Player 1 with it during the single player, and am very disappointed that it can only control player 2, making the use of a second screen obsolete, since it’s not in my hands and is very uncomfortable to use.

Neat experiment, but not a useful feature (unless you patch it to allow player 1 to be controlled using the Vita’s controls)

  • I want this game so much! Especially after IGN saying that it looks like a Metroidvania.

Vita is getting some really cool original titles this year (Tearaway, Soul Sacrifice, Guacamelee).

    Come on, PSN, get updated!

  • WHY WON’T YOU TAKE MY MONEY. i wan to buy this game, but it hasn’t become available in store yet. (the canadian one is behind i guess)

  • Was looking forward to buying this. Cross everything is great.

You being a Sens fan is just icing on the cake.

    Go Sens Go!

  • Looks really neat but no thanks. Not into the whole mexican vibe.

  • THIS GAME LOOKS AND SOUNDS AMAZING..HOPEFULLY THE NEXT GAME GAME YOU GUYS AND GALS AT DRINKBOX CREATE WILL BE LESS COMPLICATED ..WITH THE BETWEEN TWO WORLDS THING..AND JUST A SIMPLE 2D PLATFORMER WITH SOME MELEE MOVES AND WEAPONS..KINDA OF LIKE A BATTLETOADS/DOUBLE DRAGON TYPE OF GAMEPLAY! PLEASE CONSIDER THIS ..AND MAKE IT HAPPEN..2D PLATFORMERS ARE HUGE SELLERS ON HANDHELDS!! I CANT WAIT TO GET MY HANDS ON GUACAMELEE …AND HOPEFULLY WE CAN SEE HIM IN PS ALL STARS REALLY SOON!! :p

  • Thank God I have no qualms with other cultures unlike poster no. 60 who shall remain nameless.

Oh and thanks for adding a Platinum Trophy! I have missed out on so many PSN gems due to lack of Platinums (I avoid games without Platinums, it’s my unwavering mantra). So, even with little known about this game (on my end) just because it has a Platinum. :)

  • I just had a small quick play and gotta say it´s beyond my expectations, really… the details are simply amazing!!!. And I have a question, are you going to be releasing the soundtrack anytime soon?!. Thanks!!!

    • A Guacamelee! OST is being internally talked about, so if there is interested, we’ll probably do it.

  • Any plans for some Drinkbox themed panels for PS Vita?

  • Graham, I’m sorry, but in regards to LeeorV’s comments about controlling the game with the vita while playing on the PS3, I’m also completely unable to find a way to play as Juan; the game forces the vita into being player 2.
If this is somehow not true please let me know, but I’ve followed the FAQ to a tee and I can’t find a way to play as Juan.

  • I just found the true Metroid homage, I freaking love this game.

  • Wow, not even ad-hoc co-op for the Vita. My fault really for not reading all the info on the PS Store. But really, no co-op on the vita, the one console out of the two that would’ve clearly enhanced the experience. I hope a future update will enable the feature.

  • @69, to be fair, it’s still very nice on it’s own. Just saying.

  • This games has a platinum trophy and seeing it’s cross buy will there be 2 platinum trophies – 1 for the PS3 and 1 for the Vita or will they share the same set of trophies?

  • I’ve already asked for this before and got an answer, please consider adding online coop for ps vita.
Bought the game already, its awesome, but as much as I want to play it with my friend I can’t :(.

  • Why can’t I but this? It’s not on the PS Store (UK).

  • PrimeroIncognito

“Thank God I have no qualms with other cultures unlike poster no. 60 who shall remain nameless.”

Thank God I have no qualms with games that don’t have platinum trophies unlike the guy I quoted above who shall remain nameless. Ugghhhh…..

    That’s almost… worse… in a way…

  • Synposis: Downloaded while red barred… and played for 20 minutes… Such a great 20 minutes….. :D Lovin’ the game so far.. Love how the battle style works. :D

  • Has anyone from the UK managed to buy this game?

  • Thanks a bunch for the PS+ discount! I’ll definitely be picking this up for sure now.

  • Hey guys and gals the game lools awesome I can’t wait to buy it jajja by the way Are you guys interested to see Juan Aguacate or Tostada (I think thats the name of the female wrestler) on Playstation All-Stars Batlle Royale??? I would totally paid to see that it would be awesome jajja

  • Awesome. Loved Mutant Blob from Space and I’m all about supporting local talent so you’ll be getting my money for this.

On a side note, I’m really digging this game except for the coat of paint (theme). I hope with the success of this game you’ll be able to make a TRUE metroidvania type game with a different theme. How about making a side scrolling shooter rpg/metroidvania type game where you are a little ship going to different planets and old space stations and stuff….upgrades, hidden stuff, awesomeness!

    Cheers.

  • Haha, time to be annoying again!

Juan Aguacate in Playstation All-Stars when?

  • One of the most amazing games I’ve played in a long time. Well, since about Journey last year. The music, the Mexican art direction, the control mechanics, everything works. What are the chances we’ll see Juan in PS All Stars?

  • fantastic game

  • Hi Graham Smith I wanted to know if the North American PSN will ever put up a Soul Sacrifice demo for the Vita? Other Vita owner like me are really looking forward to this game and a demo will be a great way to show others what the vita has to offer. Thank You 4 reading my post.

  • Great game, only “issue” I have is that when you’re standing by a shop, I wish there were a quicker way to display the amount of money you have without needing to enter the store.

Not really an “issue” but something I would have liked. The game feels great, and I love it so far.

  • +1 leaves suck vote
+1 I would buy an OST vote
and +100 this game is awesome vote.

Seriously, the art style, humor, and gameplay make this game worth WAY more then what I paid for it.
