Today is an exciting day for gamers everywhere. As you may have seen live with millions of others across the world, just moments ago we introduced PlayStation 4 (PS4), our next-generation console that will deliver breakthrough gaming experiences for our fans starting this holiday season.
PlayStation 4 is centered on all of you – the gamers. It redefines rich and immersive gameplay with powerful graphics and speed, intelligent personalization, deeply integrated social capabilities, and innovative second-screen features. When we designed PlayStation 4, we focused on building an architecture that will allow the greatest game developers in the industry to push boundaries and dig deep within their imaginations to create the most immersive and unique games for you to enjoy.
The future of PlayStation is all about great games and entertainment, and at PlayStation Meeting 2013, we brought some of the brightest and most creative minds from the development community on stage to unveil the games that will define PS4. A partial initial lineup for PlayStation 4 includes first-party games from Guerilla Games (Killzone: Shadow Fall), Sucker Punch (inFamous Second Son), Evolution Studios (Driveclub), and Japan Studio (Knack), as well as titles from our partners such as Activision/Bungie (Destiny), Blizzard Entertainment (Diablo III), Capcom (Deep Down), and Ubisoft (Watch_Dogs). PlayStation also reinforced its commitment to self-publishing and the independent development community by having Jonathan Blow onstage who gave a sneak peek of his upcoming title The Witness. Finally, the incredible minds at Media Molecule and Quantic Dream gave glimpses of their conceptualization process and the future of gameplay with some remarkable footage. We only scratched the surface at the event, and will have many more exciting titles to come.
With so much amazing content in development for PlayStation 4, we want to give our fans every opportunity to check out virtually any PS4 game when it becomes available. In the future, when a gamer sees a title of interest in PlayStation Store, they can immediately start playing a portion of the actual game.
Our next generation console will change the way you interact with friends while you play. PlayStation 4 lets you instantly share images and videos of your favorite gameplay moments on Facebook with a single press on the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s “share” button. You can also broadcast while you play in real-time through Ustream, allowing friends to comment or jump into your game in new ways. Be sure to check out the post from Shu Yoshida, WWS President, for his thoughts on DUALSHOCK 4 and the “share” features.
With PlayStation 4 we also want you to access your games quicker than ever before. PS4’s “suspend mode” eliminates the load time on your saved game and allows you to immediately return to where you left off by pressing the power button. PlayStation 4’s background downloading and updating capability also allows you to immediately play digital titles as they download, or update the system when the hardware is powered off.
Leveraging PlayStation Network with Gaikai technology, PS4 will make it easier for you to play your favorite games and access content wherever you are. We see PS Vita as the ultimate companion device for PS4 and it’s our long-term vision to make most PS4 games playable on PS Vita, so you can bring your favorite games from the big-screen TV to your PS Vita over Wi-Fi. We’re also introducing a “PlayStation App” for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices that acts as a second screen, allowing for unique gameplay possibilities such as viewing maps during an adventure game or remotely watching friends play during an epic battle—right from a smartphone or tablet.
With so much to look forward to in 2013, I want to take a moment to thank you for following PlayStation through our incredible journey and allowing us to bring the most advanced hardware, software and networked gaming experiences into millions of homes around the world. We’re excited about this next chapter, and will continue to provide you with more details about PlayStation 4 and the broader PlayStation ecosystem, as we get closer to launch this holiday season.

nof buying anything on the ps3 store anymore now.
i feel i wasted lots money now that our digital content does not carry over , what about my plus games just play em on ps3 ? ??
Really no backwards compatibility with PS1, PS2, PS3, or even PSN games. I went from an incredibly excited “I can’t wait to pre-order!”, to an extremely disappointed “I’ll wait and see and maybe pick it up after a price drop.” I understand complete backwards compatible would be impossible thanks to the different architectures, but the PS4 needs to make post release software emulation a priority or it will lose a lot of customers.
Many old-school gamers like me have a gaming library of classic games that they have built up over years, and hate that the lifespan of those games are now dependent on the life of their old systems. And, streaming or having to repurchase the titles once more is not a suitable replacement, and in this economy is a prospect that will put off even more people. I’ll be keeping my PS3, and still keep up to date on future news on the PS4, but it’s now with a more critical eye.
Show us what to expect from this , talk is good but is the console ? I know they boost up alot of new things to GET PEOPLE TO WANT IT, and then we find out it was nothing like we thought it was
I’m with @50. old school! Games are expensive enough without having to re-buy. I like the look of the PS4 but it’ll be a long time coming if it’s not backward compatible with any format of my PS3 games.
Finally #PS4 is playable CGi, where do we go after this gen? Matrix? Follow me on Twitter Jack @gamesreflexoes
I mean like honestly why are you guys making a system after another there really no point you guys are just screwing over people just stay with the old ps3, btw leave the remote the same remote looks alien like.
Thanks for the gifts Sony and Mr. Tretton. Really excited for the PS4. We are here to stay unless you push us away with intrusive technological decisions. Such a great conference and Mr. Cerny was an outstanding choice to handle the description of the technical aspects of the system and should reiterate at E3. However, Jack we need to see you and Kaz at E3 for the next reveal. Again great showing and everyone and I mean everyone on some level no matter their console preference are excited (even if they post negatives deep down they are gamers and are just legitimately worried for their competitors). This was a perfect taste that left us with enough questions and answers to last till the next reveal.
so far, not impressed. Not much info to be impressed by. Lack of backwards compatability (
so far) REALLY disappoints. Automatic downloads sounds like a nuisance. Glad the controller has remained more or less the same. One reason I love PS. Probably post pone this for 2 or 3 years. Graphics are AMAZING, play while you download, sleep mode, no load times are all very cool. But….idk.
I’m just hoping to see good games in ps4 as well, all other “features” are just not of my liking, i’ve never shared anything on facebook, or cared for a video of my friends playing, i just want all my current library of games compatible with the new console and that i don’t have to buy them all over again, also compatibility with all past platforms would be nice to see, this last thing it’s been promised with the ps3 and we could only get a small fraction of it…
Sony tiene una política discriminatoria. SON UNA VERGÜENZA MUNDIAL!!!!
Sony has a discriminatory policy. WORLD IS A SHAME!!
Well if it does not allow me to play PS1 more so PS2 which i was hoping PS3 would let do and catch up on a load of great PS2 RPGS and titles. I’m just going to go buy a PS2 again and catch up while the PS4 price drops while tracking down those ps2 games, which is a pain but…what can you do. Well you guys could (add them all digitally) New graphics and hardware are great but unless i can play the games i love… really love for storyline i can’t see me investing in the story telling of new rpg developers. Plus the PS3 HD looks great as it is… Anywho hope you guys make it so.
Not being backward compatible is soooo not environmentally, or energy efficient! How much electricity is wasted having more than one gaming system? What do you do with all those disc you can no longer use? Landfills, pop art, coasters? It looks like no PS4 in my near future. In this economy, buying or downloading new games are not an option.
Would we be able to transfer all our trophies form the PS3 in to the PS4??
Thats what I want to know
And also Would they be another Playstation Home Beta on the PS4???
@414 I saw it somewhere that you could, basically you would sync your trophies from ps3 to ps4 if you use the same account & it also seems pretty promising so far, Would love to get it day 1 but that’s basically like buying another computer ^_^ might get it after price drop or when they drop out a slim version. Cant wait to see the new titles that come with it, Sony has really went above & beyond this time.
Ah Ok, That sounds great then and Yeah I know what you mean ,I’m might also get after the price drop or When they release a slim version of the PS4.
But so far the PS4 feature sound pretty awesome.
Hope it’ll have some kind of Playstation Home Beta in it (Fingers crossed).
If it is not backwards compatible, at least to ps3 games would be enough(i can live without ps1/2 games working on it although there is no reason it cannot be done). Im not buying it. Period. Bells and whistles graphics and gameplay. All for naught if the company is ignoring our one very resounding plea.
Backwards compatibility.
Do it or shove it where the sun don’t shine.
Whats The Price For All This Wonderfulness?
Seems like PlayStation 3.5
Not a single game I want. Too bad that Sony abandoned their turn based JRPG fans. It does not feel good to have your favorite subgenre stop being supported, and dropped like a rock without warning.
I bought a PlayStation 3 back in 2007 for turn based JRPGs, and not a single proper one. I miss the days of when Final Fantasy was good (XIII series are horrendous and Squeenix cannot make a good game), Xenogears, and other turn based games.
Now we have a bunch of mediocre inferior pewpewpewpew TPS and PAAGGs (Play As A Gun Games). Not interested in the PlayStation 4 if it is also going to be like the inferior PS3 game library. Too bad it is not more like the PS and PS2 game library. I miss back when the PlayStation brand was good.
You people need to get over not getting physical backwards compatibility in the PS4 now and move on with your lives, because it will never happen.
Instead of whining about it like a bunch of children that most seem to be, you should instead allow yourselves to have an epiphany that you need to keep your PS3 and PS2 if you want to play games from previous generations.
If you have already gotten rid of one or both, then just consider yourself SOL, and go on with your lives knowing that you only have yourselves to blame for making poor decisions in life.
i love it all but i would been it to have back play. i think the digital thing is cool but i also prefer solid copys of games in my hands. Is sony thinking of making the ps4 ( which blew away my expectations) retro outfitted?
@420 yes all the customers are wrong we don’t know what we want how did I not ,see this sooner.
i whould like to see the system ?
I’m happy what PS4 offer, however it disappointed me that I can’t transfer my PS3 save files and PSN games, still it’s a good start for Sony.
@420 Getting angry and throwing insults at the people who are unhappy with the lack of backwards only works at making yourself look childish.
And, as someone who’s launch PS3 died last year, and who’s PS2 is on it’s last leg, I can tell you that your oh so insightful solution of just keeping your old systems around is not a perfect long term solution. That’s also not taking into account the fact that some people game on more than one platform, and space on entertainment center is finite. I know already having 4 gaming systems housed in my entertainment center, a PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, and a GameCube, the idea of finding more room for another would also offer another small problem.
No Force Unleashed 3. No Arkham 3. Now the Ps4 isnt gonna play PS3 discs. The Mayans were right, The world ended in 2012.
You all should stop telling people to quit whining. Thats what these forums are for. And there was once an amazing quote saying ‘The customer is always right.’ The customer wants backwards compatability. Alot of them/us do.
It kinda sucks to know I’ve become obsolete. I quit after Nintendo because the SNES came out and all the cartridges were useless. Then came Sony with the Playstation. Discs that promised to be playable continuously. Then came PS2 which played PSone games. Then came Ps3 which (initially) played Ps2 games. Now theres PS4 which won’t.
I have about 2…maybe 3 years left of gaming it seems. Nintendo is far to weak, Xbox is just obnoxious crap. And Pcs are annoying. So, When Ps3 dies out completely…I guess gamers like myself will too. I dont mind the PSone and PS2 game downloads. Its difficult to keep those games for so long. Plus I love these new HD collections. Hitman, tomb Raider, etc. But some wont happen. PS2 Punisher? Fantastic! The Suffering? Best horror game by far! Ever (Especially until Dead Space came along.)
One of the points of BC is SIMPLICITY. Which is what innovation is all about.
either way, bigger controllers or a longer mid section would be a bonus. Instead of /–\ more like /—–\. Better for the wrists.
I kinda feel strange because Sony just made ps3 super slim, is the ps4 like ps3? it would be cool having ps4 players play with ps3 players and have the same game. I wouldn’t want to buy ps4 because I got ps3 super slim so I would like ps4 kinda like ps3
If playstation bought back used games and sold them too then I would sell, trade and buy used form Playstation direct. I love Gamestop, but to keep my discs, I’d switch in a heart beat.
Also, PS. Releasing Ps3 with Stranglehold was a brassb@[[$ move. I wish you coulda done that gain. Ps4 games (so far) are gorgeous…but not unique. Not at all unique. Maybe it doesnt make financial sense to be unique, but thats what Ps3 was. Jumping in graphics in a major way. Including Blu-ray. It was a NEXT GEN console. This does really seem like PS3.5.
I would like ps3 games to work on ps4, have same ID,ps4 having 1TB(so I could store ps3 data there), and ps4 to be like ps3
I heard it is not going to have backward compatibility again. Why playstation? Why not erase the one advantage 360 has over you? Give us backwards capability and I shall worship you even more on humble knees! I also heard we can’t transfer any current gen PSN purchases to playstation 4. I’m going to buy it of course, but I wish they would rethink those two decisions.
Unlike alot of these unreasonable people, I’m not upset at all with no PHYSICAL backward compatibility. There are PLENTY of devices out there for very cheap now that play PS1 and PS2 games. So they’re irrelevant…..sorry but it’s true.
And as for PS3 DISCS, I’d like to have it on PS4 but I understand that would mean actually having PS3 hardware inside PS4 because it’s such different architecture……..so if not being able to play PS3 discs on PS4 means the difference betwen PS4 being $400-450 instead of $600 (which btw for the ignorant, would mean exactly that….which we already know we hate more than not having backwards compatibility, remember?…..the $600 PS3s?…..because of b.c.?…..anyone?…..), then yeah, I am MORE than happy to go without being able to play PS3 discs.
But what I do find unacceptable to an extent is DIGITAL PS3 content not working. Because that only takes software emulation, which with hardware as powerfull as PS4’s is pretty easy for Sony who do incredible emulation software.
But that said, there’s an acceptable light on the horizon I’ll put in the next post
The good news is, Sony didn’t get into many specifics on stage, and were vague in alot of spots as we know. Well all tonight O’ve been reading post conference interviews, and in one of them (on n4g ps4 section, go find it yourself), the Sony rep (it may have been Yoshida) got a little more deep into the backwards compatibility with PS3 content purchased on PSN. I’m paraphrasing but it was basically along the linse of what I said above about the hardware emulation being impossible basically without HUGE cost, so “the plan” is that any digital PS3 or PSN games (I guess this also means PS1/2 as well) a gamer has bought previously, obviously they know, and you’ll be able to stream the game with PS4.
Which if it works, and is 100% up and running with 100% of the content pretty much at launch, I think that’s a fair compromise to keep the cost of the hardware down. But as for actually being able to play all of your purchased content whenever you please without an online connection, and of course disc based content……well, I guess basically the answer you don’t want to hear is “don’t trade in your PS3.”
it will now be most interesting to see what microsoft counters with. seamless transition from 360 to 720 could be a big selling point if a gamer can just pop his 360 game into the new 720 and all digital purchases work as well. just like the ps1 to ps2 transition, nice and easy.
what sony promises, gives, and then takes away leaves me causiously optomistic about the ps4.
the ps4 dualshock looks to be the best version ever.
Why does it matter to some of you if some of us want backwards compatibly? Isn’t that what these comment sections are for?
I am one of the people who wants backwards compatibly and before you say “keep your PS3”, I already plan on keeping it. It’s just that some of us went through more than 1 PS3’s already and we want to make sure our collection is not useless whenever our PS3’s do break( Yes, PS3’s do break and not everyone wants to keep replacing them) And before you say “well buy another one” Maybe I would rather spend that money buying new games rather buying another PS3…
To conclude: It should not matter to some of you if others want backwards compatibility or not!
Blew away all the expectations that I had coming into the event… really hope that the Gaikai functionality works well
I’m all in but I want to know it it will be backwards compatible…
PlayStation 4 Not Backwards Compatible With PS3 Retail or PSN Digital Games
WTF SONY!! umm didn’t this idea bite you in the ass with the ps3. I am sorry but there is no reason this can’t be compatible.
Sony get ready to be in the red again because no one gonna buy this right away if there ps3 games dont work on it….
r the ps3’s gonna be able to play any of the ps4 games
Controller Looks good. I hope they did something about the analog sticks digging issue. I also hope that controller is more durable as it looks much more expensive.
No backwards compatibility with PS3 games nor the PSN games WOW SONY you guys suck major

IM NOT BUYING THIS SYSTEM TILL THEY DECIDE TO ALLOW US TO PLAY OUR PLAYSTATION 3 GAMES ON IT..THIS IS A SLAP IN THE FACE TO THE LOYAL FANS ON PLAYSTATION. A NEXT GEN SYSTEM WITH NO BACKWARDS CAPABILITIES..IS NOT A FULL NEXT GEN…IMO..WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO ACCESS ALL OUR OLD GAMES THAT WE PURCHASED…BESIDES HOW DARE YA RELEASE A NEW SYSTEM THE SAME YEAR YOU HAVE 3 EXCLUSIVE GAMES BEING RELEASED!!! (GOW:A, LAST OF US, MEATL GEAR GROUND ZERO…SMH..AND BTW THE CONTROLLER DOESNT NEED A TOUCH PAD..IT NEEDS A TOUCH SCREEN!!..AND RELEASING IT BEFORE XBOX NEW SYSTEM..SORRY YA’LL BUT PS4 IS LOOKING LIKE AN EPIC FAIL TO ME..AND IM A DIE HARD LOYAL SONY PLAYSTATION FAN MAN.THE PS4 SHOULD BE RELEASED IN 2015…THE PS3 IS STILL DOING A TREMENDOUS JOB..AS IS THE PSVITA., ALTHOUGH A FEW MORE AAA GAMES FOR IT WOULD BE GREAT TOO.
Ha Ha …with 2 sons that breathe X-Box (let alone pay a monthly online fee) I just wonder how much pride they can swallow now. Having owned 2 PS3’s since the day they came out (and still using them) and going back and forth with pro’s and con’s, which I must admit the X-box did have some good points over the PS3 but not enough for me to go get one, I can’t wait to hear there TRUE feelings now. Although the commentary on the live stream was not over impressive the gameplay, personalzation …ect just blew me away and I will not hesitate to get the 4, even with 2 working 3’s.
5 star Sony, can’t wait!!!
Although the 1 thing that is very upsetting is the “No backwards compatibility with PS3 games”
so subtract a full star & a 1/2, that really hurts!
I my Self am a late bloomer for the PS3, I was always a 360 fan, until one day, I was at my friends house and I was watching him play Resistance 2, he got me on that game and I had to have the PS3, just for that game, but as time went by, I started to be on the PS3 more often, I know there some old PS1/PS2, games that I liked to play, and not having the the BC didn’t bother me because maintaining those disc are very hard to do, but now with rumors of BC not going to be on the PS4, is kinda of a deal breaker, I spent thousands of dollars into my PS3 Disc based collection, for me not being able to play those games I own on the PS4 kinda hurts me, I was so stoked that the new gen was coming out, and like I said I was 360 fan, but I was the biggest Bungie fan out of my friends, if Bungie did a collectors I bought them all
So when I finally heard that there finally coming back and making Destiny for the new gen, it was pushing me to get the PS4 even more, the graphics look amazing on the games they showed, and I been waiting for Diablo 3 to come on the PS3, I knew they were working on it but now there talking about making it for the PS4 also, which is nice, so pretty much my plan to get rid of my PS3 and put that money towards the PS4 seems to back fire, but we all have to wait and see because the full detailed information is not disclosed, they are just giving us a taste of what to expect, I am waiting for the E3, because I know that’s when Sony will make all Info known, if I need to keep my ps3 to play my old games, I probably would, but as with everyone else it would be nice for the PS4 to be able to play PS3 games, some of us are collectors and like to have the physical copy instead of downloadable copy, but people stop shooting the dead horse, let us wait and see what this can truly do just maybe Sony is keeping stuff hidden for E3, maybe they will take the time and read this forum, maybe they will answer all of the questions we have and concerns we have. like the saying goes, patience is a virtue.
A important thing is the PSN accounts and the games we can keep it and played on our future ps4, the future is the network and I dont want lose my over 150 games, give the according support for the ID thropies and games PS3 PSN or Classics and multimedia content. WE invest a lot on money on our digital collection we dont want to lose it

That’s nice…BUT WHERE’S THE ACTUAL SYSTEM!? lol
I’m still shaking my head at this whole mess. WTH are you thinking by not making the PS4 backwards compatible!!!!??? At least make the digital stuff compatible. Think of all the money people spent on your friggin store just so you can give them the finger? Shame on you Sony. I’m done.
