PlayStation Meeting 2013: PlayStation 4 is The Future of Gaming

PlayStation 4

Today is an exciting day for gamers everywhere. As you may have seen live with millions of others across the world, just moments ago we introduced PlayStation 4 (PS4), our next-generation console that will deliver breakthrough gaming experiences for our fans starting this holiday season.

PlayStation 4 is centered on all of you – the gamers. It redefines rich and immersive gameplay with powerful graphics and speed, intelligent personalization, deeply integrated social capabilities, and innovative second-screen features. When we designed PlayStation 4, we focused on building an architecture that will allow the greatest game developers in the industry to push boundaries and dig deep within their imaginations to create the most immersive and unique games for you to enjoy.

Killzone: Shadow Fall

The future of PlayStation is all about great games and entertainment, and at PlayStation Meeting 2013, we brought some of the brightest and most creative minds from the development community on stage to unveil the games that will define PS4. A partial initial lineup for PlayStation 4 includes first-party games from Guerilla Games (Killzone: Shadow Fall), Sucker Punch (inFamous Second Son), Evolution Studios (Driveclub), and Japan Studio (Knack), as well as titles from our partners such as Activision/Bungie (Destiny), Blizzard Entertainment (Diablo III), Capcom (Deep Down), and Ubisoft (Watch_Dogs). PlayStation also reinforced its commitment to self-publishing and the independent development community by having Jonathan Blow onstage who gave a sneak peek of his upcoming title The Witness. Finally, the incredible minds at Media Molecule and Quantic Dream gave glimpses of their conceptualization process and the future of gameplay with some remarkable footage. We only scratched the surface at the event, and will have many more exciting titles to come.

With so much amazing content in development for PlayStation 4, we want to give our fans every opportunity to check out virtually any PS4 game when it becomes available. In the future, when a gamer sees a title of interest in PlayStation Store, they can immediately start playing a portion of the actual game.

Our next generation console will change the way you interact with friends while you play. PlayStation 4 lets you instantly share images and videos of your favorite gameplay moments on Facebook with a single press on the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s “share” button. You can also broadcast while you play in real-time through Ustream, allowing friends to comment or jump into your game in new ways. Be sure to check out the post from Shu Yoshida, WWS President, for his thoughts on DUALSHOCK 4 and the “share” features.

With PlayStation 4 we also want you to access your games quicker than ever before. PS4’s “suspend mode” eliminates the load time on your saved game and allows you to immediately return to where you left off by pressing the power button. PlayStation 4’s background downloading and updating capability also allows you to immediately play digital titles as they download, or update the system when the hardware is powered off.

Leveraging PlayStation Network with Gaikai technology, PS4 will make it easier for you to play your favorite games and access content wherever you are. We see PS Vita as the ultimate companion device for PS4 and it’s our long-term vision to make most PS4 games playable on PS Vita, so you can bring your favorite games from the big-screen TV to your PS Vita over Wi-Fi. We’re also introducing a “PlayStation App” for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices that acts as a second screen, allowing for unique gameplay possibilities such as viewing maps during an adventure game or remotely watching friends play during an epic battle—right from a smartphone or tablet.

With so much to look forward to in 2013, I want to take a moment to thank you for following PlayStation through our incredible journey and allowing us to bring the most advanced hardware, software and networked gaming experiences into millions of homes around the world. We’re excited about this next chapter, and will continue to provide you with more details about PlayStation 4 and the broader PlayStation ecosystem, as we get closer to launch this holiday season.

  • If i buy a ps4 and download my music off my Cd’s like I’ve done on my ps3 will i be able to listen to music and do other things at the same time? like surf the web or over play the soundtrack?

  • So, for me i like the vita but ive heard so many times about remote play its time for it to work as it was shown. I’ll wait a good year for all the kinks to handled and the price to drop, n of course more games to choose from.

  • Reading a lot of great suggestions and ideas also it says the design and specifications are subject to change. So hopefully PlayStation are paying attention to these ideas. I agree with not being excited about PS4 titles more of the same tho more excited about the system itself and its functions, also its ability to help indie developers and new people getting into the industry of video game design. So keep up the ideas people and share your opinions where PlayStation can hear them. Again design and specs subject to change.

  • News of PS4 is great. Havent seeen anything on games like Socom are Farcry3. Sad to think Socom is going to be left behind after so many great third person shooters of which Socom 2 was the best.. So anything in the mix by your game makers like pre-mentioned.

  • What will be the price for th PS4 and will it have TRUE backwards capability, or will it be a fancier version of PS3 with forced updates. And by forced i mean the game would not play any game, CD, or DVD until game updates were installed. After several forced updates over the few years i have had my PS3 all my PS2 games are ( UNSUPPORTED DATA ) and unplayable when installed in my PS3.

  • WOOHOO is all I can say…WOOHOOOO

  • @BlueBl1zzard

Excellent point I still have my launch 60GB, I even purchased a PS2 last year to keep in case my original one breaks for some reason. I suppose other then the PSN I don’t really have as much concern as I did at first thought.

I however don’t like having to buy my games again. Sony however hasn’t announced their plans, so I’m not going to jump to conclusions just yet.

  • @darth-krayt paying 100-150 more for the console is completely reasonable as opposed to rebuying your whole game collection the cost is negligible..

  • I have watched the video three times now. My first reactions we ho-hum. The last watch through I noticed the incredible amount of details in the videos that I missed before. The fire effect from “Deep something”, the heat from the exhaust from the Killzone video. That now has me looking forward to next generation more than watching the video the first time. Only thing I saw on the first watch was, way to many pewpew shooter sequels. While I’m still under the I don’t like shooters genre, I did really like knack and I’m going to have to get a better video for the Jonathan blow game. But I liked the Deep something game it reminds me a bit of Demon’s souls.

For feedback Sony. I don’t care for the share button or all that concept behind it. I do however see how people can enjoy it. I can imagine people using it for play tips as before it was cumbersome to post gameplay video now it seems easy.

  • sexy cant wait to see the design of the console

  • The controller looks cool and looks very comfy if it were in my hands. Graphics look awesome but what i care about is how smooth the games run with those good graphics. But i really hope EA sports makes games on the PS4 like Fifa 14 and Fifa World Cup 2014 Brazil.

  • It’s outrageous. I looked and I could see old blog as Mexicans wrote the discriminatory treatment of Mexican PSN and Playstation still continuously no matter in any way, with very poor policy.
I recommend not to buy from a NASTY NOW. SORRY FOR USERS WHO endorse these companies.
    SONY WORLD’re a disgrace.

  • Looking nice but for the fact that we’re gonna be able to play PS3 games on the PS4 directly… Streaming always gets a delay, and it’s important for me NOT to get one. And since there is a ton of good PS3 games popping in 2013, I’m not sure I’ll buy the PS4 this year. I might wait a year before buying. This will let me the time to finish all good ps3 games on the ps3 before moving on to the PS4.

  • I have a question: What does the new PlayStation Eye camera do? Do you always need to have it in order to play? Will it have wireless N?

Also, Sony, please put backwards compatibility with the PS4. This is all I ask. Please either release 2 SKU PS4’s: one with backwards compatibly and one with out it. Or release an add-on that has the necessary chips to enable backwards compatibility! I would not mind paying extra for it.

    I remember this quote:

“Backwards compatibility, as you know from PlayStation One and PlayStation 2, is a core value of what we believe we should offer. And access to the library of content people have created, bought for themselves, and accumulated over the years is necessary to create a format. PlayStation is a format meaning that it transcends many devices — PSOne, PS2, and now PS3.”

Of course you can now add PS4 to the list.

I want to buy a PS4 regardless if it’s backwards compatible or not. And I want to make it clear; I am not demanding it, I am just asking for it. I know you guys don’t have to offer it but I just really want it.

  • I would love for them to add Google chrome web browser for the ps4.

  • The things i would do to get this. I love you playstation.

  • I saw a comment back & it made me wonder about the multiplayer. For the titles that are going to be released for both systems(Watch Dogs, etc). Are ps3/ps4 players going to be able to play with each other or are they going to have their separate servers?

  • Is the PS4 going to be able to play the PS3 games considering all the money that we have spent on PS3 games it would be nice to be able to continue playing them on the new system.

  • I don’t think that you’ll be able to play with PS3 gamers if you have a PS4. I’d like Sony to prove me wrong though. It worked with Portal 2. PS3 gamers played with PC gamers.

  • I so want a PS4.

Now the big question, is it region free like the PS3?

  • I’m skeptical, to say the least. Sony has proven, and more than disproven themselves in the past. This new system shows a lot of big leaps and bounds that I don’t know if Sony can handle. Especially since they’ve had all this time to work out kinks in the PS3 and we are all still running into issues. But, who knows, perhaps they’ll pull something out of a hat on this one. Fingers crossed for you guys working on this thing.

  • HOLY 5H17!! This is the going to be the best console in the history of ever, I can not wait!

  • WOW! Looks like Sony has done it again! I only bought one PS3 when they first came out and I still have it.lol One of the old CECH models with the backwards compatability and it still works pretty good. I can’t wait to see what this one can do! I hope they continue the Motorstorm series. My PS3 came packaged with the original and I played it all the time until it got lost while moving. PS4 is gonna make X-box look like an old jalopy. LOL Just like the original did to the Sega Dream whatever it was called….Playstation is the console king!!!! :D

  • finally an actual system that will command and concur, now it can be in the running with PC gaming and with large flat screens backed with powerful immersive surround sound the PS4 should be completely Epic and amazing!!!when it is available i will pre-order immediated!!!!

  • Why dont you change the name from the console and the controller

  • Awesome job one and all at Sony!! Can’t wait to get my hands on the PS4,would have enjoyed a little peek at the console itself, but everything else looks great!! Wonder if the price will be a little easier to choke down at launch this time?? $600.00 is a good chunk of coin these days!! Thanks again Sony, still a Sony only fan!!

  • I’m still buying this system whether you say yes or no to the question I’m about to ask….Will the Ps4 be able to play Ps3, Ps2, AND Ps1 games?

  • Geez….this is just an early preview. They aren’t going to reveal very much before launch. They have to keep some details a secret or the PS4 will end up like the Sega Dreamcast. Sega gave out too much info before it launched and Sony used it to outdo them before they could launch it.lol I’ve always owned the first model of each new gen. I’ve never had one of the those itty bitty slim ones. I’ve never had a single problem with any of them other than the normal game bugs (like standing next to a wall and rotating the camera to a point where you could see through it.Like in the old Tomb Raiders, etc). My PS3 weighs like 10 pounds. It’s been through a few falls and is showing the signs of age and use. It takes a few tries to get it to boot but always starts up.I hope the first version of the PS4 is like the first version of the PS3. It seems like the end production models are the ones that have all the problems. This isn’t a case where smaller is better. It’s not a cellphone, tablet, or laptop where a smaller size is necessary since it’s not intended to be portable.lol

  • Please release a BACKLIT remote for PS4! PLEASE!!!!

  • Thousands of ppl freaked out after the pre-release announcement of of the PS3. Gamer mags were full of misinformation. They thought it wouldn’t be backwards compatible either, but it was. Don’t rush to a premature judgement until you have all the facts.lol. I paid $600 for my PS3. The PS4 might not be so steep. I would estimate about $400 though. The PS3 had alot of new cutting edge technology in it which made it pricey. The PS4 most likely contains around 50% of the same components which should make it more cost effective. Most of the major changes appear to be software related which is less expensive to mass produce unlike physical hardware components. At least Sony is isn’t like apple or MIcrosoft and releasing a new version of something every few months (Ipod,X-box,etc). Each PS gen is a long term release and games drop into the greatest hits price range after they sell a set number of copies. Other console companies keep their game prices at close to the original retail price until the games are at least a year old. Microsoft is the biggest price gouger in the software industry. X-box is Microsoft’s attempt to imitate the Playstation. LMAO { Playstation is the king! } c]:{D

  • I know I’m not even going to bother buying a PS4 for one you can’t play old games on it, and for two what happens to my Playstation Plus. Does it transfer over to the new system? Also I own a lot of movies from the playstation store on two different 500 gig PS3’s. Am I able to do a data transfer from the PS3 to the PS4. I mean since the PS3 has come out I have owned about 50 PS3’s. So if my Playstation plus and movies do not get transferred over I’m going stick with my 3 500 gig PS3’s.

  • wasup wit these graphics taking a small step forward that’s what the real gamer wants is big improvement on Graphics not social media that is a secondary to charging us more money its an option to social media most of us don’t really care if u going to bring out the title nex-Gen lets see NEx Gen Graphics it looks as the ps3 can bring us these graphics ps2 to ps3 was a big graphic upgrade idk about PS3 to PS4…………..???????????????

  • does your throphys transfer to ps4

  • it is pretty cool

  • When can we expect to find out if there will be games you can buy on discs so if you do want to trade in games because you dont like them you can and if and when will ps3 games work on the new system?

  • I think i’m going to have to buy one. I’m strictly an avid PC gamer, i’m going to have to throw down some cash early just to keep Xbox from getting the edge this year.anyway **** OFF MICROSOFT SONY GOT DIS.

  • I do have to say, maybe for console gamer what’s in this thing is “Hi-Tech” it’s really not, I actually put together a PC for one of my friends with the exact specs as some people have been saying the PS4 will have for about 200 more or less. That means that Sony probably could sell them much cheaper than I (however the PS4 will still be much cheaper than a similar grade alienware). just my two cents; the PS4 is up to date as for components, it’s using stuff that was released last year, or the year before, which is decent, i really want a console that is using stuff on the bleeding edge of tech, that way it’s something i can compare to my PC not have my PC in a class of it’s own.
(I’m going to get so many tl;dr comments)

  • No backwards compatibility??? count me out of buying it soon, I’ve always bought my consoles on their first 6 months of being released, looks like this won’t be the case. Also, if I have to start from scratch on the next gen, then what’s stopping me (and many others) to look at what the other companies are doing? this is really lame, I own around 40 PS3 discs, 10 PS2 discs, 15-20 PSN games and various DLCs

  • Sony, you have no idea how excited I am for inFAMOUS: Second Son and Killzone: Shadow Fall! Can’t wait to get my PS4 on launch day!!

  • @31 games will not support 4k, but it will support 3D running at full 1080p in 60fps. more then enough for me

  • off subject but what is a ‘troll’ in the blog world? So I know not to do it….

  • @484 im sure they’ll keep the same ecosystem, i would hate to believe we have to start our trophy level back at 1.

  • @491 a perfect example of a troll is someone coming in here, signing in with their playstation I.D. and bragging about Halo.

a troll can also be someone less then impressed at what everyone likes about something, trolls are here to bother you in every conceivable way. trolls are everywhere, and it’ll come off as no surprise if someone already started trolling about the ps4 and comparing it to the other next-gen system.

  • So will the downloadable PS1 and PS2 games be given trophies?
I’m a trophy hunter/addict, which is stupid because they dont do anything, and one of my favorite thingd about HD collection discs are my old games upgraded and added trophies.
I’m still holding out for backwards compatability for at least Ps3, but I thought I’d ask/mention about downloaded Ps1/Ps2 games.

  • @482, well if you saw the conference it showed the playstation + logo, so your safe there. and in regards to your movie purchases…lol, thats a real moot argument, if you delete your movies on your ps3, you can’t even re-download them, the only way to recover them is by backing them up.

you got 3 years to really decide if its worth crossing over, i dont see ps3 support dying in anyway, but i love the seamless interaction the ps4 offers, really slick like the ps vita, im glad they took a page from it’s book.

i was on the fence about getting it day 1. but you really can’t convince me that Killzone:Shadow Fall, inFAMOUS:Second Son, and DriveClub isn’t worth the price of admission at all. i love my ps3, and i know we’ll still get great games, but in comparison the ps3 is so slow now………..ugh…almost wish i didnt see the conference, but oh well, lol.

  • @494 if ps1 and ps2 didnt get trophy support on ps3, i cant see them going the extra mile for ps4. and that ultimately come down to developers. period. and the ps1 and ps2 games at minimum would need to be remastered so it registers under the ps3 tech

  • @494, your best bet is to get a 60gb ps3. for the life of me, i dont see any point in playing all the old games. i had a 60gb ps3 and i had no reason to go back and play these old titles, the only game i ever played on my ps3 that was a ps2 game was God of War II and that was only because it was on the ps2 at the time. old graphics, nostalgic gameplay, is a thing of the past for me, i have a glossy tv, that do spectacular things, and i want my games to justify my tv purchase,

  • @482, play the killzone 3 gameplay video and put it side by side to killzone shadow fall..better yet, play the second son trailer and compare it to infamous 2, that second son trailer was running on the gameplay engine…thats a pretty game, looks waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more detailed then infamous 1 and 2 combined. clean your glasses
