Today is an exciting day for gamers everywhere. As you may have seen live with millions of others across the world, just moments ago we introduced PlayStation 4 (PS4), our next-generation console that will deliver breakthrough gaming experiences for our fans starting this holiday season.
PlayStation 4 is centered on all of you – the gamers. It redefines rich and immersive gameplay with powerful graphics and speed, intelligent personalization, deeply integrated social capabilities, and innovative second-screen features. When we designed PlayStation 4, we focused on building an architecture that will allow the greatest game developers in the industry to push boundaries and dig deep within their imaginations to create the most immersive and unique games for you to enjoy.
The future of PlayStation is all about great games and entertainment, and at PlayStation Meeting 2013, we brought some of the brightest and most creative minds from the development community on stage to unveil the games that will define PS4. A partial initial lineup for PlayStation 4 includes first-party games from Guerilla Games (Killzone: Shadow Fall), Sucker Punch (inFamous Second Son), Evolution Studios (Driveclub), and Japan Studio (Knack), as well as titles from our partners such as Activision/Bungie (Destiny), Blizzard Entertainment (Diablo III), Capcom (Deep Down), and Ubisoft (Watch_Dogs). PlayStation also reinforced its commitment to self-publishing and the independent development community by having Jonathan Blow onstage who gave a sneak peek of his upcoming title The Witness. Finally, the incredible minds at Media Molecule and Quantic Dream gave glimpses of their conceptualization process and the future of gameplay with some remarkable footage. We only scratched the surface at the event, and will have many more exciting titles to come.
With so much amazing content in development for PlayStation 4, we want to give our fans every opportunity to check out virtually any PS4 game when it becomes available. In the future, when a gamer sees a title of interest in PlayStation Store, they can immediately start playing a portion of the actual game.
Our next generation console will change the way you interact with friends while you play. PlayStation 4 lets you instantly share images and videos of your favorite gameplay moments on Facebook with a single press on the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s “share” button. You can also broadcast while you play in real-time through Ustream, allowing friends to comment or jump into your game in new ways. Be sure to check out the post from Shu Yoshida, WWS President, for his thoughts on DUALSHOCK 4 and the “share” features.
With PlayStation 4 we also want you to access your games quicker than ever before. PS4’s “suspend mode” eliminates the load time on your saved game and allows you to immediately return to where you left off by pressing the power button. PlayStation 4’s background downloading and updating capability also allows you to immediately play digital titles as they download, or update the system when the hardware is powered off.
Leveraging PlayStation Network with Gaikai technology, PS4 will make it easier for you to play your favorite games and access content wherever you are. We see PS Vita as the ultimate companion device for PS4 and it’s our long-term vision to make most PS4 games playable on PS Vita, so you can bring your favorite games from the big-screen TV to your PS Vita over Wi-Fi. We’re also introducing a “PlayStation App” for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices that acts as a second screen, allowing for unique gameplay possibilities such as viewing maps during an adventure game or remotely watching friends play during an epic battle—right from a smartphone or tablet.
With so much to look forward to in 2013, I want to take a moment to thank you for following PlayStation through our incredible journey and allowing us to bring the most advanced hardware, software and networked gaming experiences into millions of homes around the world. We’re excited about this next chapter, and will continue to provide you with more details about PlayStation 4 and the broader PlayStation ecosystem, as we get closer to launch this holiday season.

What’s with the small controllers, i have a problem with my hands engulfing the controller as it is making it hard to play for longer sessions, make a larger controller for people with normal sized hands not childrens sized hands, i would gladly buy a different controller if it fit in my hands better than your existing controller. Why a touchpad? Why not a controller that is adjustable and built strong not flimsy. I would pay 100 bucks for an all aluminum well made adjustable controller. Think about it third party designers/developers.
Gotta Have It. Been a loyal Playstation owner. BUT. This new system will, have to ‘ do it all’. The PS3 failed at playing PS2 games and we were ok with that. This one will have to play the games from the PS3 before I will run out and buy it. My PS3 works fine right now. My gametime is invested in the disks I own, I didnt buy them on the network. Who would credit me for a disk i own so i can download a game from the cloud, because it wont play PS3 games. Also the PS4 will have to include everything the PS3 has, and can do, an do it better. I remember why i ran out to upgrade from the PS2 to my PS3, there was a huge difference. So if this is going to be a small time fishbone last minute upscale like the PS1 to the PS2. I can wait. With as much as i love my Playstations, it would break my heart to see Sony let us down with anything less than the ultimate Gaming system. We have invested alot of time an money into this community. They are getting us excited about a new system… Then it NEEDS to be everything, and more, you cant hold back and expect us to be happy. Our PS3s work perfectly fine, right now.
wow man i cant wait to get my hands on one of these im a major gamer so imma have a blast using one of these.
WOOOOO CANT WAIT!!! <33
@307 kid caommndo . that not true that rumor . they are on record saying all the games on psn will work almost 2-3K titles
If your online account transfers then all of purchase transfer as well.. ps4 is a digitial console, i dont see why it woundlt work.. I’ll look into this more to fact check but As right now this psn rumor of my games wont work is false.. Because sony is record sayng all titles online will be availiable day one to purchase.
I know for certian your ps3 saves will not transfer over to ps4 becuase its different hardware. But as far as the game.. i think it will in a patch of sorts. This highly possible , but a disk will not work nor will your saves. I dont how cloud will work in this arguement.

I am so excited!! :D I can’t wait for the PS4 to come out it’s gonna be epic, he grafics are amazing and the game play’s looks great! :)
THIS…IS…EVOLUTION.
the*
I love the part about play as you download, Honestly… Getting too much on the Social media bs with the controller. I want a console for gaming not for facebook. The controller looks miserable to me. But the actual gaming content of the material what the playstation 4 has in-stored. Big expectations. Huge. Love the sound of it on that part.
should offer 2 models of the ps4
one that has the cell and one without, so the fans wanting BC without an internet connection dont miss out on anything ps3 related
I Cnt wait… im already camping in front of gamestop! i want 4 consoles xD 1 for me 3 for ebay lol
i mean it looks awesome. but i think maybe the touch pad on the controller could be a bit annoying.
Make us proud Sony.
And KH3 prepare for PS4.
I really want to know that
1. The BluRay disk drive is 8-14 speed something quicker for BluRay as well as games
2. I also want to know if it’s an HDMI 1.4 to Allow 4K for game developers that can actually develop at that grade of detail like Gran Turismo 6
3. I really hope the WiFi adapter is 802.11ac/n not just n because WiFi in consoles really needs to be better especially if this is the last console from Sony for the next 10 years or ever.
4 Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC should be included
add me on psn at dnickan
I plan on selling my PS3 once I (eventually) buy a PS4. But I hear the system won’t have true backwards-compatibility; instead it will rely on streaming PS1, PS2, & PS3 games through Gakai.
If we can’t transfer our PSN purchases over to PS4, then there’s no point in buying anymore digital content for my PS3.
I was excited but then soon the buzz was killed.
I am sorry but this whole PS4 not playing PS3 games is some major BS. I have like 130 something games, and spent hundreds on the PS store and I am not willing to just let it go. There s truly no reason why this system can not play the ps3 games. This streaming game crap is dumb alot of areas will charge you for using over a set amount of GB’s a month. SONY YOU GUYS SORT OF DROPPED THE BALL….
I want to know if the following issues have been solved now for the PS4
1. Has the issue with game installs been solved? On the PS3 multiple games would have to install to run smoothly is this something that we will not see on the PS4? This was a big hassle to me and took up alot of space on my HDD hopefully it will not be like this on the PS4.
2. Will our trophy’s from our PS3 transfer to the PS4? I don’t see why it cant happen as long as we use the same ID for the PS4.
3. Has the issue now with the XMB been solved with the terrible waiting times for things to load? Also the comparison of trophy’s was also pretty slow when comparing with friends.
4. Where was Uncharted 4 ?
Will have a PS4 when a Naughty Dog title is announced hopefully by then there will be stuff that interests me. Knack and Watch_Dogs are the onlyy things, but I can play Watch_Dogs on my PS3 or Wii U.
I love Playstation and everything but i think they are releasing the ps4 way to early. I already know my plan for this I’m going to do what I did with the ps3, wait until they stop making games for the ps3 like absolutely done then wait 2 years after that then i will buy a ps4.
Dear Playstation,
Please announce a price so that I can preorder this. or allow me to write you my check now you can fill in the amount later.
Cool Cant wait
You guys messed up the controller, and no PS3 compatibility? What in the world is wrong with you Sony?
I hope PS4 is backwards compatible to play PSone,PS2 and PS3 games (I’m a retro gamer).
Hey Sony, Will you please make the connections still avaliable to play with Playstation 3. That way I can still play with my friends that buy the Playstation 4. I just recently bought the Playstation 3.It would really make me happy(: By the way the controllers are beast..
Thank you , vVGodlyVv
Its CONFIRMED: NOT BACKWARD COMPATIBLE:
“In a roundtable conversation with journalists, President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios noted that PS3 games of both the retail and downloadable variety will not be compatible with PlayStation 4, at least not natively. In other words, your PS3 discs won’t work in the new console nor will the games you downloaded. This means that hits like Journey, The Unfinished Swan, Shatter and hundreds of other games available in the digital space will not be carried over to PlayStation 4 in addition to the collection of PS3 discs sitting on your shelf.”
So quit asking about it!
just freaking amzing
First, I understand why there is no PS3 backwards compatibility. However I’m concerned over it more as time goes by. In 5 years when they stop the PS3, and it’s makes it hard to find how can I continue to play those PSN games or PS1 titles? I’m sure as time goes by you will inform us, but right now my concern is over the ability to play things I bought digitally on a PS3 or compatible device.
@TitleOne PS3 discs not working doesn’t really surprise me, however It’s kinda disappointing digital games won’t work either. It’s just more convenient to have all these games on one console. Then again I didn’t buy Infamous 2 digital (and other digital games) to play on a PS4, and my reason for buying a PS4 Isn’t to play Infamous 2 digital. So I guess I’ll keep my PS3 when I get my PS4.
Ok. But what about backwards compatibility? Will we be able to play our PS3 discs on our PS4?
@ TwinDad Well that depends on if something happens to your PS3. My fat PS3 from 2008 still works, these things are pretty resilient. Plus today I went into a Gamestop and some guy bought a PS2, so I don’t think they’ll stop selling PS3 for a while. And from what I keep hearing people are saying that PS3 games , PS1 games, etc. will be purchasable and playable on PS4…………eventually.
@ buddymanna see TitleOne’s post #377
sony best
I hope they make it BACKWARDS compatible!! with the ps3 and i hope u can carry over the trophy information….if u can do this im sold!
@382 the real issue is having to buy again what you already own.
Also a lot of if not most of Internet providers have a data cap limit (200GB a month with Comcast) that will interfere with this console heavily. I personally live with 4 people so that is 50GB a month per Person…..
This Playstation App should be on Vita aswell. Its only fair.
cant wait till it comes out
wtf wow just wtf playstation i love u guys please keep doin what ur doin u will make the world better
This sounds really great. I just hope that Sony got smart and is making it able to play the old games as well as the new ones. That way many of us would get one right away, and not wait till the old system is obsolete.
Its looking to be very promising, Im in. Bring it on holiday 2013!
I just read that the dualshock 3 won’t be compatible with the ps4, BUT the move will be. Stupid and horrible decision. Sixaxis comes built in all controllers, does it get used in all games? We have a new touch pad on all dualshock 4’s now, you guys tryin to say that it will be used by all Dev’s, on all games, therefore requiring us to only use the ds4? What a joke. We all know the things you come up with will not be implemented into every game, so why force us to only use this one controller? Horrible horrible decision.
All i ask is that this console is compatible with the ps3 content i own, either disc based or digital, and that the psn network is the same. i don’t want to have to choose a different name and crap and loose trophy data that I’ve worked hard to get. just to hop to a new console.
Yoshida said ps3 content, digital or disc is not compatible, but they are tryin to make it available through the cloud.
Take my money, I want one.
this thing looks real sexy
you know sony you guys want us to spend money on the psn and the ps4 will not support digital downloads that is just wrong.
I got a question, Will we be able to listen to music while playing games??
Really excited for this one!
I got a question, Will we be able to talk to people while their playing other games, sort of a chatroom on Xbox
what will be the price to be when it comes out will the ps3 games play in this
