PlayStation Meeting 2013: PlayStation 4 is The Future of Gaming

PlayStation 4

Today is an exciting day for gamers everywhere. As you may have seen live with millions of others across the world, just moments ago we introduced PlayStation 4 (PS4), our next-generation console that will deliver breakthrough gaming experiences for our fans starting this holiday season.

PlayStation 4 is centered on all of you – the gamers. It redefines rich and immersive gameplay with powerful graphics and speed, intelligent personalization, deeply integrated social capabilities, and innovative second-screen features. When we designed PlayStation 4, we focused on building an architecture that will allow the greatest game developers in the industry to push boundaries and dig deep within their imaginations to create the most immersive and unique games for you to enjoy.

Killzone: Shadow Fall

The future of PlayStation is all about great games and entertainment, and at PlayStation Meeting 2013, we brought some of the brightest and most creative minds from the development community on stage to unveil the games that will define PS4. A partial initial lineup for PlayStation 4 includes first-party games from Guerilla Games (Killzone: Shadow Fall), Sucker Punch (inFamous Second Son), Evolution Studios (Driveclub), and Japan Studio (Knack), as well as titles from our partners such as Activision/Bungie (Destiny), Blizzard Entertainment (Diablo III), Capcom (Deep Down), and Ubisoft (Watch_Dogs). PlayStation also reinforced its commitment to self-publishing and the independent development community by having Jonathan Blow onstage who gave a sneak peek of his upcoming title The Witness. Finally, the incredible minds at Media Molecule and Quantic Dream gave glimpses of their conceptualization process and the future of gameplay with some remarkable footage. We only scratched the surface at the event, and will have many more exciting titles to come.

With so much amazing content in development for PlayStation 4, we want to give our fans every opportunity to check out virtually any PS4 game when it becomes available. In the future, when a gamer sees a title of interest in PlayStation Store, they can immediately start playing a portion of the actual game.

Our next generation console will change the way you interact with friends while you play. PlayStation 4 lets you instantly share images and videos of your favorite gameplay moments on Facebook with a single press on the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s “share” button. You can also broadcast while you play in real-time through Ustream, allowing friends to comment or jump into your game in new ways. Be sure to check out the post from Shu Yoshida, WWS President, for his thoughts on DUALSHOCK 4 and the “share” features.

With PlayStation 4 we also want you to access your games quicker than ever before. PS4’s “suspend mode” eliminates the load time on your saved game and allows you to immediately return to where you left off by pressing the power button. PlayStation 4’s background downloading and updating capability also allows you to immediately play digital titles as they download, or update the system when the hardware is powered off.

Leveraging PlayStation Network with Gaikai technology, PS4 will make it easier for you to play your favorite games and access content wherever you are. We see PS Vita as the ultimate companion device for PS4 and it’s our long-term vision to make most PS4 games playable on PS Vita, so you can bring your favorite games from the big-screen TV to your PS Vita over Wi-Fi. We’re also introducing a “PlayStation App” for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices that acts as a second screen, allowing for unique gameplay possibilities such as viewing maps during an adventure game or remotely watching friends play during an epic battle—right from a smartphone or tablet.

With so much to look forward to in 2013, I want to take a moment to thank you for following PlayStation through our incredible journey and allowing us to bring the most advanced hardware, software and networked gaming experiences into millions of homes around the world. We’re excited about this next chapter, and will continue to provide you with more details about PlayStation 4 and the broader PlayStation ecosystem, as we get closer to launch this holiday season.

  • I’m one of the people that really miss BC. What I don’t understand is why this isn’t considered as a premium option. All old consoles came with an expansion port – why not new consoles? Buy the PS4 sure – but, if you want, also buy a $150 expansion module that lets it play PS3 games!

The module would pancake the processor and memory to the system but allow you to create a partition on the PS4 drive for PS3 content, use the PS4’s power, HDMI and Blu-ray and it’s controllers (although I would bet that the PS4 is already compatible with the Dual shock 3). Expansion slices could be made for the PS2 as well.

This would give us a much cleaner installation, complete and future-proof access to our current libraries and a revenue stream for Sony while adding only the cost of the expansion port to the base PS4. Really, it seems so simple..

  • it’s quite sad about the event not showing the appearance of the PS4 hardware console other than the games, system features and the controller

sigh…I guess we have to wait for it to be revealed on E3.

Other than that, loving the Infamous: Second Son trailer. can’t wait for the game and the console to come out

  • So we got a marketing pitch today. Looks interesting. I think I saw far too many pewpewpew shooters. I hope I can look forward to a more diverse lineup, you know something the PS2 provided.

Or announce Ni No Kuni 2 on PlayStation4 and I’m there.

  • Hey, where were you, and the other big suits, Tretton-San?

I will jump on all of this as soon as it’s available.
PS: wow, the Blog, for once, is being bombarded. Really long load/refresh times.

  • I have a few Questions for you Mr. Tretton if you don’t mind or can answer any of my burning questions about the PS4 console that I’m sure others are asking as well.

    1. How come we didn’t get to see what the PlayStation 4 Console is going to look like at this event?

    2. Does the PlayStation 4 have backwards compatibility to PlayStation 3 Disc Games, Blu-ray Movies or PS3 Digital Games or Both? (I hope it has the ability to at least play PS3 Digital Games, and Blu-ray Movies)

    3. What type of Hard Drive will be in the PlayStation 4? Hard Disc Drive, Solid State Drive, or Flash Storage Chip?

    4. How big will the Storage Capacity will be for the first PlayStation 4 Bundle(s)?

    5. Is the Storage Drive upgradeable by the Consumer to install his or her own?

    6. What are the compatible Storage Drive’s the Consumer can install in the PlayStation 4?

  • thank you sony (from iraq wath love)

  • Awesome awesome awesome.

Now let me get to what I really want to say.

You people at Sony should really reevaluate your media partnerships. Over the last 2-3 years that I have been keeping up with gaming news, I noticed a very strange thing happening. Numerous “news” sources like Kotaku, Joystiq, Engadget (which I know is under the same company as joystiq) continually attack your brand, and in turn damage it. I very much feel that there is an element at play here, your direct competitor, buying off some of these outlets.

Now I’m reading how apparently the show was a disappointment because you didn’t SHOW the console. This is from places that you send invites to to come to your gatherings and probably send free copies of games. Yet they turn around and spit in your face

    Fix it!

  • I heard somewhere that the ps4 may be a digital game only console. (no disks or cartridges). Is this true?

  • my question is where is the console why no pic or display???? whoopee new remote ;-/

  • Well, well, well. What can I say? Oh yeah…..IMPRESSIVE! I “Saw the Future” and now I don’t want to go back to the present :(

    Long Live Playstation!

  • I’m ecstatic!! I can not wait!!! Day 1 purchase, I’m saving my money now!

  • Looks great Jack!
Can’t wait to hear more on Gaikai/Playstation Cloud! Hopefully we can play all our games on iOS, Android, Smart TV’s and more. Then Playstation will become the Netflix of gaming!
Great to hear the support for Indie’s! Hopefully costs to publishing and updating software can be kept to a minimum.

  • The Pause/Resume feature? HALLALUJAH!!! You must have been listening in on my cussing and fuming because I hate that it takes 6 or more button pushes to actually play a game. Just take me in where I left off is what I yell at my PS3.

If I wasn’t already a huge fan, this feature alone would be the deciding factor.

  • what we have all been waiting for this is awesome and killzone looked awesome the features are amazing if they can do everything they say they can

  • awesome.. teaser! anxiously waiting for E3 and the holidays! It’s my birthday soon.. you evil geniuses.. now I’m planning to get my PSVita :D. Can’t wait to get my hands on the PS4. <3 it. Merry Christmas!

  • Well I was wrong and Sony is releasing the PS4…Why? I mean you just got to the top of the latest console war. You’re a struggling company currently and yet are risking huge debts by releasing this new system. You are not even making the system able to play a PS3 disc in it, despite that blu-ray is the only format you can possibly use. I mean I get it, you want to beat xbox to the punch but xbox needs an update from their dvd games and horrible burn up rates at release and Wii U is giving no one competition. I think this is just a rush to make people buy a slightly better console. Well thanks sony but seeing as it took you 4 years to convince me to get the PS3, I will not be owning your PS4 for quite some time. Namely the large amount of time you charge 500 for the new system, after it’s been proven to not be buggy like 360 was upon release (6 systems in 2 years) and prove that the quality of gaming is actually going to be worth it. I’m not upgrading from HD games to HD games played in a fancy new system. Sorry I can’t join the sheep at day 1 release. I will own a PS4 but like the PS3 it will be in about 2 to 3 years after it’s release. Just to small a bump up from PS3 for me.

  • OOOOOOHHHH WOW, a bunch of piss poor mediocre games again. Guess you video game developers never learn. Your games suck. I don’t give a **** about your super formulaic cinematic wanna be movie games. I first bought a PlayStation for FF7 and other turn based JRPGs like it, same with the PS2. I got a PS3 in 2007 and you have still NOT GIVEN ME ONE GOOD TURN BASED JRPG THIS GEN!!!!!! >_<

SHOW ME THE JRPGS!!!!! SHOW ME THEM!!!!!! NO MORE OF YOUR CRAPPY SHOOTEY GAMES, SONY! Play one PAAGG (Play As A Gun Game), you have played them all.

I hope your PlayStation 4 flops, just like your FlopStation Vita flop.

I want some turn based JRPGs, not the mediocre crap shown today.

  • In the presentation they say they are “unlocking remote play” and the Vita will be able to remote play PS4 games. (vague) Then he proceeds to say the long term goal is streaming ps1, ps2, and ps3 games as well.

    Now here Jack writes:
“it’s our long-term vision to make most PS4 games playable on PS Vita”

This is really shaping up to be another empty promise in my mind. They seriously need to be very specific and honest about what will and won’t happen with Remote Play this time.

  • To all you asking specific questions, do you really think they would answer those questions after not saying anything about pricing, HDD size, what the console looks like at today’s presentation?

My guess is that they will stay mum on that until E3.

Sony, you once again you have got me happy to call myself a PlayStation owner an will enjoy getting another console from you guys for the 4th time.

  • I only have one request:

Make sure you don’t lowball the estimate on how many systems to launch. You have a TON of people saying ‘TAKE MY MONEY’, so put out enough so people can enjoy a good holiday with their systems.

  • Please make it backwards compatible. I don’t want to have third console in my shelf…

  • Just cant wait for it!!

  • Amazing, I’m so happy For PlayStation :) looking super very very forward to this new era <3

  • 7 years and this is all we get? I haven’t seen a single compelling game yet. Where are the fighting games, JRPGs, and arcade-style racers like Ridge Racer and Wipeout? Most of these features being hyped can be implemented on the PS3 with a firmware update. I am still on board for the PS4 in spite of what I have seen so far provided that the rumors about paid multiplayer are false. Please don’t let me down, Sony.

  • @WAR0979

Sorry bud, but just because people want to buy a system on Day 1 does not make them a sheep.

Sorry you are so butthurt about this, you need to get over yourself.

Day 1 buyer here for sure, cannot wait to play Killzone and Infamous, going to be so hard to decide which game to play first!

  • I’ll buy it when it comes out unless I am unable to play PS3 games on it. There are still a lot of games I want to play on the PS3 but just haven’t had the chance to yet. If I can’t play the old games on the new system than I’ll wait a year or two to play the current games and buy it when they bring down the price to compete with Microsoft.

  • Im feeling so disapointed. AMD ….. wtf ! I thing i will now invest in PC, not playstation ….. And like that i will can keep going with a good quality ( intel and nvidia ). I thing sony you make a really wrong move on this one ….. Anyway i will still enjoy my ps3 till the end, by the way why Sony you dont just do like you said before …. keep the magnificent Cell and just pimp up the machine with memory, graphic, and there you have a powerful ps4 with some quality under the hood. Anyway for my part i gonna wait to see what will be the result to put Amd under the playstation name. Why people dont understand cheaper mean bad quality ……… better pay more once than less many time !

  • What an amazing conference, I honestly cannot wait to get this thing!! You really started what is going to be a great year with a huge bang! PS4 will be absolutely amazing

  • SWEET!!!! I can’t wait to get my hands on it

  • Dear Mr. Tretton,

LIke many people on here I would like the PS4 to be at least backwards compatible with the PS3 or at least the downloadable content (I would like to feel I did not waste money on the PSN) that goes with movies I have purchased on the PSN as well.
I would also love to see my current trophy list carry over and the system future proof with the new 802.11ac wireless standard and the ability to add an SSD when they become more affordable and mainstream.

    Thank You for listening

  • A new console makes no sense at ALL. You should make a new generation console when the current generation is outdated. The PS3 is not outdated at all. Nothing above Blu-ray, nothing to make the PS3 outdated. I don’t see the point of a new generation system,

  • Kingdom Hearts 3 please and a 3D world like Home but better and I’ll be running out to buy a PS4 the day it comes out.

  • FIRST of all – everyone concerned that this isn’t a 64 bit PC architecture CPU – stop worrying – because it is. X64 is the shortened term for what should be called “x86-64” . All AMD CPU’s are 64 bit and they didn’t make a special one in this case that was for some reason an 8 core CPU and NOT 64 bit – that would be ridiculous.

SECOND – anyone else who wants to compare these specs to PC specs and call them inferior needs to take a second look at that realtime killzone demo and name ONE PC game that looks as good. There isn’t one. I have a gaming PC myself, and I’ve yet to see anything like what I saw in that demo. That is the benefit of taking modern hardware and making it PURPOSE BUILT. If you built a 4000 dollar gaming PC and are trying to justify your purchase by bashing these specs and ignoring the game play videos, you’re just making yourself look foolish.

Sony – excellent job. Everything I wanted to see out of this generation you nailed with your 5 focus points. This, more than anything, shows you “Get it” . You’ve shown 4+ exclusives out of the games and we ALL know more are coming. I’m genuinely excited.

  • You should introduce the private chat like on X-Box…That is the only reason I have an X-Box and if you had that on the Playstation 4 I wouldn’t have to buy the X-Box

  • An 8 core processor than only clocks a pathetic 1.3 GHz, yeah I think that I’m going to stay with Microsoft. I’m glad I got rid of my PS3 because that processor is so out of date it isn’t even funny. Hell most dual core processors clock in faster and that’s ones that run a 10+ year old OS. Frankly, I thought about coming back to Sony with the new console but no.

  • Execution at the executive level is what will make or break this system. The ability to actually buy the system on launch day in the U.S. two weeks before the Thanksgiving holiday is critical to defeating the xbox. Thankfully the Wii U fell flat on its face at launch so this is your chance to get established before Microsoft gets a foothold or Apple decides to spend its war chest.

Likewise, launching a terrible product is a death trap too. The Vita launching without PSOne support, almost no PSP library, etc was terrible. I mean, even today have you tried doing cross controller with a PS3 on LBP2? There are dozens of forum posts on how bad the interaction is. It should just “work.” You turn on the Vita, it says, “We noticed LBP2 is running on your PS3, connect to it now?” simple. Not click the hidden icon on the hidden icon after clicking the hidden icon after downloading the dlc after pairing remote play then waiting for a 600 MB download fail.

I have faith you can get this right!

  • Stoked for the PlayStation 4! Loved everything I heard and saw today.

  • Other side notes, people will gripe about no backwards compatibility, I think people will be fine with it, especially if we can stream our games over the Internet. Frankly, I don’t care if the new system has an optical drive or not. To mitigate launch day risk, consider rolling out the streaming PS1-PS3 game service with an all inclusive range of titles ahead of launch using the Vita or PS3 as a client. Get some testing going with it. Maybe open it up to only plus members since all of our save files are already in the cloud. It would also be cool if we could setup our PS3 so that we could stream to our Vita / PS4. That should help you continue selling PS3’s, Vitas, even after the PS4 launch.

Also, I have only had negative experiences with UStream. Consider supporting a broad range of services such as Twitch. P.S. would *LOVE* a Twitch client for the Vita.

  • No console reveal. Bummer! :(

  • I just read that it will have no optical drive meaning you have to download all your games online. If that is true I will never but the PS4 and will switch over to Xbox after being a life long PS user. Being able to buy and sell games helps me be able to afford to play them. I know you want everyone to buy your games new so you can make more money but the reality is if ppl are unable to go to game stop and trade in games than this will be a complete flop and ppl will not buy it.

  • Blame the average consumer who doesn’t want to pay big money for a high spec gaming console. The Wii smoked the PS3 despite being an underpowered piece of crap that can’t even output in HD! Apparently that’s what consumers want — a cheap piece of crap. Sony would love to load it up with crazy specs, but who will buy a $700+ gaming console besides the hardcore? Nintendo would win yet again and I’m tired of Sony being in 3rd place. I want the PS4 to sell well and have a high installed base early on this time around so 3rd party devs won’t treat it like a 3rd wheel.

  • Can’t wait for it to be released! Controller looks really good too.

  • @RoninX136 Dude what are you TALKING about ?

Do you have any idea how these things work? Did you see Unreal Engine 4 demo running in real time? Do you realize that you can’t run that demo on a real PC without DRASTICALLY improved specs? Do you even care what the system is capable of visually or do you just read the spec sheet like and complain like a troll?? Ignorant.

  • AMAZING

Like many of us here, I am so excited about 2013. This system has so much potential, I cannot wait to try it out.

I’m a little sad it won’t have backwards compatibility, but that’s why I’ll be keeping my PS3!

Cannot wait for the holidays, SO EXCITED!!!

You have a real winner here Sony, congrats!

  • Seriously, what the hell do you people see in this mediocre shooter crap? PAAGGs (Play As A Gun Games) are all the same. They never change. They’re super linear and you do not get to explore. No side missions/sidequests, no substance, gimmick set pieces, QTEs, no puzzles, etc. All you do is pewpewpew in them, and the games are trying to be movies. They’re not fun. Shooters suck really bad and they’re boring and all the same and they suck and they’re stupid.

I hate your modern video games and you fools in the video game industry have helped ruin my once favorite video game series, such as Final Fantasy (XIII series is horrendous), modern Splinter Cell is horrible, and modern Resident Evil is garbage. They also ruined DmC hahahahahahaha what a joke.

Your modern video games suck, and you video game developers seem to be smoking crack. Your mediocre games are freaking awful.

I also gotta say to those developers who ruined my once favorite series, F U, and F U Sony for not having any turn based JRPGs on your console anymore. You lost me as a customer.

  • Hoping to see a new uncharted, fallout, or star wars 1313 at E3

  • It seems like you guys learned from your mistakes from PS3. I just hope for launch there is a SKU for $400 or less.

  • Everything at the 2013 PlayStation Meet exceeded my expectations in regards to the PlayStation 4.. simply astounding. The monstrous power within the PS4, the upgrades to the always near perfect dualshock controller, enhancing the online infrastructure of PSN, and GOD almighty those amazing games.. and to think that was just a small sample, can’t wait for E3 and TGS.

One little change I wish would happen.
For the PlayStation 4 EYE I read:

    Video Pixel (Maximum) 1280 x 800 pixel x 2
    Video Frame Rate 1280×800 pixel @ 60fps

Really wish it was an 1080p cam.. Full HD at lauch SONY!!

  • @Feisar Yeah I work on computers for a living and have been a gamer for nearly 25 years, so yeah I know what I’m talking about. And btw I was not blown away by the demo of the unreal engine, besides I’m done with a company that has a terrible credit rating, sells its US headquarters, and loses millions of customers’ data only to leave them in the dark for nearly a month. So yeah I have no faith in them, if you don’t like it I don’t really care.
